Her biographer Amy Gray joined Nuala to address the many contradictions of this pioneering politician. As of today, eligible working parents in England can access 30 funded hours of childcare – in term time only - for children aged nine months to four years. The government is doubling the amount of funded hours it offers, but there are concerns about availability and staffing. New research from Growth Spurt and Women in Data shows that more than half of parents can't access the funding without restrictions, paying fees or meeting extra conditions. Nuala McGovern talks to Early Years Minister Stephen Morgan about the scheme and the challenges the government faces over nursery childcare. We're also joined by Joeli Brearley, founder and director of Growth Spurt, to discuss their research, along with a mother who shares her own experience of navigating the system as she returns to work. Actor Robin Wright joins Nuala in the studio to discuss directing and starring in new series The Girlfriend, based on the book by Michelle Frances. Best known for her award-winning role in House of Cards and much-loved movies such as Forest Gump and The Princess Bride, Robin plays Laura in the psychological thriller, a protective mother who is deeply suspicious of her son's new girlfriend Cherry, played by Olivia Cooke. As part of a new Woman's Hour series this week about life after suicide, we'll hear from three women who've had the experience of someone close to them taking their own life. Sam Southern's husband Glenn took his life five years ago in 2020, leaving her with a blended family of six children, including two who were very young. She talks to reporter Jo Morris about the impact it had on her at the time and how she now runs a charity supporting other families impacted by suicide where she lives in Blackpool. For anyone affected by the issues in this series, there are links to information and support on the BBC Action Line website. Presented by: Nuala McGovern Produced by: Sarah Jane Griffiths

We return to television this week to conduct a postmortem on the controversial second season of HBO's House of the Dragon. The Game of Thrones spinoff has its fans split down the middle with a divisive finale, and season in general, as the Greens and Blacks head to war. We discuss the contention at the center of the series' reception, as well as give our own differing thoughts.

Send us a Text Message.Happy Monday! Candi is back with me this week to discuss the drama and dragons in episodes 6 and 7 of House of the Dragon Season 2. The episode is mostly focused on episode 7, The Red Sowing.  I had previously recorded an episode on Smallfolk, but unfortunately significant audio issues with Riverside forced me to scrap it. I was extremely grateful for my guest, Becca, giving her time so I tried to salvage one of our segments, which you'll find at the very end of this episode. Unfortunately, the audio could not be improved. You can find and follow Becca on Twitter here.Candi and I unpack all of the events in episode 7 while weaving in things from episode 6 where appropriate. Our discussion focuses mainly on the newly established dragon riders, including whether or not they can be trusted. There's still another mysterious dragon without a rider hanging out in the Vale and we're really hoping Rhaena will claim him.And of course we check in on the happenings with the ain't sh*t second sons - Aemond and Daemon.  We had a lot of fun talking all about the Riverlands and speculated about where Daemon goes from here now that he's finally cemented their support. Thanks so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time.  I'll be back on Sunday with my conversation about the finale and Candi has agreed to return to do a full season wrap up, so stay tuned! Laci and Matt are at war with each other like the gunters are at war with the villainous Nolan Sorrento in the Oasis of Ready Player One. And it's all because they can't agree on this movie! Is this the first BAD Spielberg movie the show has covered this summer? Or is it another classic?   First we get into the history of the movie, starting with the career of novelist Ernist Cline. From his humble beginnings as a slam poet in Austin to his screenwriting career working with Harvey Weinstein on the film Fanboys, to writing Ready Player One and creating bidding wars for both the publishing and movie rights, Ernie is a true American success story. And then he got Steven Spielberg to direct the thing! Wow! Will Spielberg use this opportunity to do some crucial self-examination about the role he has played in shaping pop culture, in emphasizing nostalgia and sentiment and comfort amongst moviegoers everywhere, keeping them in a perpetual state of adolescence? Or does he just use the cool toys and giant budget to make a really cool-looking movie?   Then: The movie itself. Has there been a wetter paper towel of a leading man than Tye Sheridan? Future megastar Olivia Cooke is right there, man. Give her the reigns. Anyway, enough editorializing. This episode is having some Ready Player FUN.   Next week: Our Indiana Jones TikTok Live will appear in the podcast feed on August 2. We'll be back with a regular episode about Catch Me If You Can on August 9.   Watch this episode in full: https://youtu.be/fYs-nYD7SuA   Time stamps: 00:00:49 — Our personal histories with Ready Player One and our big-picture thoughts on the movie 00:10:28 — History segment: Ernest Cline and his novel Ready Player One, and how the movie came to be with Steven Spielberg; who the heck is Tye Sheridan? 00:29:00 — In-depth movie discussion 01:33:05 — Final thoughts and star ratings   Artwork by Laci Roth.   Music by Rural Route Nine. As a House of The Dragon fan I am SO excited that we are joined by the show's stars Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke for this episode!  If you are not familiar with the prequel series to Game of Thrones already - where have you been babes - it slays in many ways. There's murder, there's backstabbing, a whole lot of hot people getting up to hot things, and many storylines to get your head around, so it's time to take a trip to Westeros if you haven't already (and you don't even have to have watched Game of Thrones to love the show).  At the centre of it all is Princess Rhaenyra played by Emma D'Arcy and her childhood best friend, Allicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke who destroy their friendship in the quest for power. If you thought you had had a tough friendship break up, this is NEXT LEVEL.  Outside of Westeros you may also already recognise Olivia from the Oscar nominated The Sound of Metal, Me Earl and The Girl, Ready Player One and Apple TV's Slow Horses. And whilst this is Emma's breakout role they were nominated for a Golden Globe for their scene stealing performance.  Today as they return to House of The Dragon season two - which is available now on Sky and streaming service NOW - they talk about the moments on the show that had them clutching their pearls, how they are finally finding their power in their roles and the sheer embarrassment of getting smacked in the face (or in Emma's case being spat in the face by a co-star!).  What I love most about this episode though is when Emma opens up beautifully about the relief at being able to live their life openly as a non-binary person and just how cute the friendship they have built off screen is. If you love the episode too, get in touch with me via social media @joshsmithhosts - I always love talking to you. Love, Josh x P.S. In this epsidoe you will have heard me talk about my book, ‘Great Chat: Seven Lessons for Better Conversation, Deeper Connections and Improved Wellbeing' which is FINALLY out this week!
