Send us a textMYSTERY ROAD It's the end of the road for Season 14 as TGTPTU's four White fellas travel across the world to the land down under for host Ken's 1x1 flick pick and this season's final film: MYSTERY ROAD (2013), sponsored this week by the Criminal Island's very own Hoppy Joe Beer (Get Your Hop On!). Directed by (and written by and lensed by and edited by and music with sound design by) Ivan Sen, this Aussie neo noir film that will launch a sequel and multiple standalone seasons of a TV season is the Australian filmmaker's first genre film. Sen's work is made with considerations to the conditions of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (a.k.a. First Peoples, a.k.a. First Nations, a.k.a. Indigenous Australians), and when news of his making a crime fiction film spread, an all-star cast of Oz acting talent lined up to join, beginning with Australian Broadcasting Corporation mainstay Aaron Pedersen, for whom Sen wrote the part of the film's protagonist Detective Jay Swan, with second cast Hugo Weaving whose star power from the past two decades of Hollywood IP films subsequent to serving the Matrix franchise as Agent Smith helped draw in Ryan Kwanten, Bruce Spence, and an early appearance by Samara Weaving, a pod fav who made an appearance in an early TGTPTU Halloween episode. Plot: A local First Nations girl is found murdered, and Detective Swan freshly back in his hometown from time away catches his first homicide case and must reckon with his family left behind as investigating the homicide brings him into the town's underworld of drugs and prostitution, a world not unknown to his estranged wife and daughter. Pedersen's character also encounters alcoholics (it's Australia after all) drinking themselves to death; a mysterious death of a rookie officer and, separately, a senile man's pet; aspiring cop-killer children on bicycles; mutant dogs; fast barefoot humans; overt and covert racism; Chinese food; and two crack shots in H. Weaving's and Kwanten's characters. This week Ken and Jack recover from a week-long cold; Thomas brings his comedic A (short for "Australia") game; and Ryan offers background on the growth of media by First Nations peoples in Australia and later demos next season's theme song--all on this special, concluding, evening-record episode of TGTPTU. “Is that a fact?”THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!): Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Following the unexpected arrival of a ventriloquist dummy on his doorstep, and the sudden, violent death of his wife – two events that might be related – Jamie Ashen is arrested by Detective Lipton, a cop with a thing for electric razors. Lipton's also a by the books kind of guy who's convinced Jamie is responsible for his wife's death. But Jamie doesn't have time for games — he's determined to find out who or what killed his wife and tore her tongue out in the process. His search takes him back to his home town of Raven's Fair, where the superstitious residents suspect the spectral Mary Shaw, a long-dead ventriloquist, may be to blame. Seems Shaw was connected to the disappearance and ritual murder of families years back, then became the victim herself of a heinous crime. With Lipton on his tail, Jamie visits his aging father Edward, his young wife Ella, local mortician Henry and his demented wife Marion, who unspool a tale too fantastic to be true. And slowly, the truth about Raven's Fair reveals itself to Jamie's unsuspecting, and for now human, eyeballs. There's something special about seeing some unknown talent, knock it out of the park...On this special episode we are diving into a little slice of indie cinema gold that is in theatres (in the US) and on VOD across North America. It's time for 'Head Count'.In the style of Blood Simple meets Memento, the upcoming feature film pits an escaped convict against a set of improbable scenarios and a cast of wild characters on his journey of violence, love, and redemption. While it does borrow from a lot of its influences there is something special when you get to see a movie that is so self-assured and that's what 'Head Count' is, from it's writing and directing team of Ben and Jacob Burghart all the way down to it's leading man; Aaron Jakubenko. We had the unique pleasure of talking with Aaron about how he got the job, being with several other Aussie actors shooting an independent film in Kansas and so very much more....'Head Count' is in limited theatrical release in the US and on VOD platforms everywhere now.
In this episode we discuss fugly university dorm furniture made from mahogany, the extreme illness induced by the iconic "4 quadrant display case" Ikea table, Maddy's humiliating flub at yoga, the nursery rhyme that involves popping heads of dandelions, Liv's engagement with cottagecore, fantasy worlds where women want to give hand jobs, Stern-boi-ing out over Alexsander Skarsgard, our unfounded negative feelings towards Anna Paquin, how the power to hear people's thoughts would make us b our b's out, how punchable Sam's face is, whether the show Summerland ever existed, the trauma of actors and SO MUCH MORE!!!

On this month's episode, we're chatting Lundgren's most recent film, Section 8! In this star-studded effort (which is currently available on streaming), Dolph stars alongside Ryan Kwanten, Dermot Mulroney, Mickey Rourke, and Scott Adkins in a tale filled with revenge, government espionage, and way more twists than you'd expect from a 90-minute actioner! Ryan Kwanten takes the lead as Jake Atherton, a retired soldier who's back on US soil after a stint in the middle east. Yet the violence has a way of finding him when he's recruited by a shadowy covert organization to carry out government assassinations. And when it's clear that Jake is actually working for the bad guys instead, he enlists his former army buddy and mentor (played by Dolph!) to help him take out Section 8! Returning to the show to help me discuss this one once again is action movie expert, Vern from the website, outlawvern.com! How does the film do in balancing its cast? How is Mickey Rourke utilized in his brief role? Just how integral is Dolph Lundgren to the movie? How is it that so many seem to know about Section 8 and seemingly do nothing about it? And how does Scott Adkins' presence (and late arrival) save this film? Listen in as Vern and I enter Section 8! Major thanks to Vern for coming back! Please be sure to check out his website: www.outlawvern.com. You can also read his many books, Seagalogy, Niketown, and Worm on a Hook available on Amazon or where ever books are sold! Section 8 is currently available on video on demand as well as AMC+! Please be sure to check out the the official webpage for the show: www.imustbreakthispodcast.wordpress.com. This week on End Credits it's about to get spooky. Yes, we're about half-a-month early when it comes to the official start of Halloween season, but we're jumping the proverbial gun with a little end of summer tribute to horror and scary things. We're talking about some of our favourite (recent) scary movies, and then we will see if Glorious is worthy of that list. This Wednesday, September 14, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Candice Lepage will discuss: Scared So Good. In the last 10 years, the horror genre has gone from something enjoyed by a small but very dedicated group of film fanatics to one of the most well received genres that constantly delivers both in quality and box office. To begin this week's show, we're going to count off a few of our favourite horror movies from the last 10 years. If it was made good and scary between 2013 and today, we just might talk about it. REVIEW: Glorious (2022). So you're heading down the highway, you're getting tired, and you need a pit stop. You pull into some out of the way truck stop in order to use the bathroom, and - BOOM! - you're confronted by an non-corporeal god-like entity that enlists you in a game to determine the fate of all humanity. Those Lovecraftian vibes are apparent in Glorious, a new horror film streaming on Shudder starring True Blood's Ryan Kwanten and Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons, but are those good vibrations or bad vibrations? This review will tell. End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.
The days when Ryan Kwanten was best known for playing Jason Stackhouse on True Blood may be coming to an end. Here, Ryan shares what drives his project choices and performances and tells us why he feels seen by Maximus Decimus Meridius (as well as a fun and surprising alternate pick!).Then, Jordan has one quick thing -- breaking A24 trilogy news!

The Fantasia Film Festival is back and it is its usual rundown of Asian cinema, creative genre flicks, and head turning indie films. This week, we talk about some of the movies that left the biggest impression on us. Two of them had us smiling until our faces hurt. The other also made us laugh, but not in the way you would expect. Before we get into Fantasia, we discuss two trailers that have a connection to Rob Zombie. We have talked a lot about Zombie's remake of The Munsters on previous shows. At first, we were skeptical and angry; this soon turned to genuine curiosity. How does the latest trailer make us feel?Speaking of Zombie, the new teaser for Halloween Ends came out and we have lots of opinions. While Zombie had nothing to do with this new trilogy, his contributions to the franchise represent a low point. Or did Halloween Kills take its place? We discuss whether we are still interested in seeing Halloween Ends after its woeful predecessor.Fantasia has its roots in the Montreal Asian film scene. Film from Asia have always been a big part of the fest and this year is no exception. Next Door is a South Korean movie about a man who has been training for years to enter the police academy. Before his latest attempt, he hangs out with some friends and gets real drunk. He wakes up in his neighbor's apartment and finds a dead body on the floor. The film mixes all types of humor, using quick with and physical comedy. We also debate the importance of the mystery and the difficulty of keeping the tension in a single setting location. And how can a movie about waking up next to a dead body be relatable? We Might as Well Be Dead is a subtle movie that also manages to be emotionally impacting. Does its social commentary go too far? And why would a film that is laugh out loud funny make us so uncomfortable? We also discuss how a movie about European attitudes means something to others.Despite being set primarily in a single location, Glorious has a lot going on. The movie is about a man who stops at a roadside restroom. While there, someone from the next stall begins talking to him. As the conversation continues, things get serious. We talk cosmic horror, the lack of respect for genre cinema, and glory holes.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Hello and welcome back to another episode of B Bin Horror! On this week's episode we talk about the 2007 Horror/Thriller, Dead Silence. Dead Silence was written by Leigh Whannell and directed by James Wan and stars Ryan Kwanten, Amber Valleta, Donnie Wahlberg and Bob Gunton. On this episode we talk about ways to survive Mary Shaw which includes using a gag ball (it would work, trust us), we talk about the alternate ending and which ending we prefer, and what we would do if a doll showed up on our doorstep. This week Fred prepared the survival game for Brandon, Doug and Dylan to play and try to overcome Mary Shaw's shenanigans and her favorite ventriloquist Jeff Dunham. "Caged Love" month rolls on this week as the group watched and discusses Nic Cage in a movie where he may secretly be researching and practicing for his dream job after Hollywood as the propietor of a slummy hotel in Ken Sanzel's Kill Chain. Also starring Anabelle Acosta, Erico Colantoni, Angie Cepeda, with Uber-stud Ryan Kwanten. It's a movie so slow paced and at times slightly painful, some of the fellas start to question if in fact they've gone too far down the Cage rabbit hole. Perhaps it was a poor choice to run this hard with the bit.... nah. It's just getting good.

At the end of the night, no one gets what they were looking for.On this episode’s Pop Culture section we focused on Schmidt’s Desert Island Book List, which are:Outliers by Macolm GladwellThe Prince by MachiavelliFreak by John LeguizamoVampire Diaries - Any scripts from the first season of Vampire DiariesPhantom Tollbooth by Norton JusterAdditional Pop Culture References such as:It’s Complicated - Schmidt references this to Winston as a not complicated movie. It’s Complicated is a Nancy Meyers movie about a couple reconnecting, but they're divorced and he's remarried.Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Jess, Oliver, and Schmidt are watching Rise of the Planet of the Apes when they get back to Oliver’s house for Jess’ one night stand. Sydney native Ryan Kwanten learned his craft while working on the popular Australian TV series Home and Away, racking up 223 episodes. He gained further notice on Summerland but broke through to stardom on the red-hot HBO series True Blood. He’s seldom idle for long, having costarred in such recent series as The Oath and Sacred Lies, and while he’s now a California resident he still commutes for work. He can currently be seen with fellow Aussie Kodi Smit-McPhee in the futuristic 2067 on Amazon Prime and other streaming services. Leonard and Jessie found Ryan to be a thoughtful actor with an admirable work ethic and an interesting career to look back on.

Hey HBs! We're here with part 1 of Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris, the first book in the Southern Vampire series or, as we like to call it, the Sookie Stackhouse series! This was a foundational book in Erin's romance-loving career and she will defend Sookie and Bill's perfection until true death. Meanwhile, Melody is more of a show girl, soooo... Bonus Content: Erin's post-army haircut!, Mel was a little bored with Sookie (partially because she's not in a great mental/emotional state), Ryan Kwanten doing yoga (drool), the excellence that is Dillards on a sexy vampire, and more!

Episode 48 sees Andy and Mitch joined by YouTube producer, journalist, gamer and frequent contributor to the Evolution of Horror Podcast... it's Louise Blain! Her chosen film? Dead Silence! The time is sometime after Saw catapulted them into the limelight. James Wan and Leigh Whannell followed it up with this little curiosity. A film which sees Ryan Kwanten do battle with a vengeful tongue-stealin' spectre whose soul resides in a ventriloquist's dummy! This film made Andy laugh-snort several times. It's wild BUT IS IT GOOD?? The synopsis is as follows: After his wife meets a grisly end, Jamie Ashen returns to their creepy hometown of Raven's Fair to unravel the mystery of her murder. Once there, he discovers the legend of Mary Shaw, a murdered ventriloquist whose eerie presence still looms over the town. As he desperately digs for answers, Jamie encounters the curse that took his wife's life and threatens his own.
