The whole Murder Moose crew is BACK, and this week, we're diving deep into The Monkey!
We are back with another episode of the Fully Booked podcast, and as February drags on, we find ourselves waiting for the winter snow to melt, just like everyone else in Eastern Canada. To shake off the seasonal gloom, we decided to treat ourselves to a movie!Luckily, our timing was perfect because February 21, 2025, marked the release of The Monkey, a film adaptation of a Stephen King short story, directed by Osgood Perkins. Given our love for horror, and with Perkins' track record of unsettling films, we were eager to dive into this adaptation. So, we grabbed our tickets, watched the film, and now we're here to break it down for you.The Story Behind The MonkeyThe movie is based on Stephen King's short story, The Monkey, originally published in Gallery magazine in 1980 and later included in Skeleton Crew (1985), a collection that also contains The Mist - another King classic with multiple adaptations. The story follows Hal Shelburne, a man who, since childhood, has been haunted by a cursed wind-up monkey toy. Someone dies every time the monkey claps its cymbals (or, in the movie's case, beats a drum). As an adult, Hal's past comes back to haunt him when the monkey is rediscovered, dragging his family into a cycle of death and destruction.Though the adaptation stays true to the core concept, the film takes some liberties, including changes to the monkey's mechanics and added layers of dark comedy. The Monkey currently has a 6.5/10 on IMDb, a 79% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 60% audience score. We personally think the audience is wrong - this movie is better than that.A Darkly Comedic and Campy Horror ExperienceOne of the most striking aspects of The Monkey is its unexpected tone. It is absolutely a horror movie, but it also leans into an absurd, almost slapstick, dark comedy style that took us by surprise. We laughed - a lot.The film is directed by Osgood Perkins, who comes from a long line of cinematic and artistic figures. His father, Anthony Perkins, famously played Norman Bates in Psycho, and his mother, Berry Berenson, was a photographer, actress, and model. His grandfather was a silent film actor, and his maternal grandmother was Elsa Schiaparelli, a legendary fashion designer. With this rich lineage, it's no wonder Perkins has carved out a unique space in horror filmmaking.Perkins has directed eerie and atmospheric films like The Blackcoat's Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, but The Monkey is a departure from his usual style. It leans into camp, exaggeration, and grotesque humor. While some horror fans might find the film's comedic undertones off-putting, we found them incredibly entertaining. There's a certain madcap energy to the way events unfold - especially in the film's death scenes - that makes it feel like a Final Destination movie, but funnier and more stylized. The Plot: A Family Cursed by a Sinister ToyThe movie follows Hal Shelburne and his twin brother, Bill, from childhood into adulthood. As kids, they stumble upon their father's old belongings and find the wind-up monkey. When they activate it, strange and horrifying deaths follow. The film opens with a chilling cold open - one of the best we've seen in a while - where their father, played by Adam Scott, tries to get rid of the monkey in a pawn shop, only for a brutal series of events to unfold, leading to his own gruesome death. The family, unaware of what really happened, believes he simply abandoned them.As the story unfolds, we see how the curse haunts both brothers in different ways. Hal isolates himself, fearing that anyone close to him is in danger, while Bill grows more obsessed, believing he can control the monkey's power. As adults, they each react to their trauma differently, showing how past events shape people in unexpected ways. One of the film's central themes is the illusion of control over fate and death. Both brothers, at different times, believe they can direct the monkey's killings, but ultimately, they cannot. Death is random, and any attempt to manipulate it only leads to destruction. The Kills: A Mix of Horror and Ridiculous GoreIf you're a horror fan who enjoys creative and over-the-top death scenes, The Monkey delivers in spades. The deaths in this movie are insane, brutal, and bizarrely comedic. For example:A woman jumps into a pool only to explode into pieces the moment she touches the water due to an electrical surge.A man shoots a wasp nest, and every wasp flies directly into his mouth, suffocating him.Another victim is trampled to death by horses while trapped inside a sleeping bag, and when they unzip it, all that's left is slush. These deaths don't just shock - they make you laugh at their absurdity. Even the director, Osgood Perkins, mentioned in an interview that audiences laughed so much at the kills that they missed the actual jokes that followed. That's how outrageous some of these moments are. While the film has plenty of gore, it doesn't dwell on it. Each kill happens quickly and unexpectedly, without excessive lingering on the aftermath. This pacing keeps the film moving at a fast clip, making it an incredibly entertaining watch.Performances and Final ThoughtsWe have to give credit to Theo James, who plays both Hal and Bill, delivering two distinct performances that make each brother feel like a separate person. Elijah Wood has a hilarious cameo as a stepfather, bringing his usual quirky charm to the role. Even the child actors playing young Hal and Bill are excellent, carrying much of the film's early tension. There's also an interesting discussion to be had about how trauma shapes people differently, and the film explores the inescapable pull of family ties, no matter how much you try to separate yourself from the past. While The Monkey is undeniably fun and entertaining, it also carries deeper themes of fate, death, and the inability to control life's chaos. The story makes us wonder: If we had the monkey, would we turn the key? Our answer? Absolutely not. This film is one of the most enjoyable horror-comedies we've seen in a while. Whether you're watching it for the bizarre kills, the dark humor, or the unsettling themes, The Monkey is a wild ride that horror fans shouldn't miss. We'll definitely be grabbing the Blu-ray to revisit all the behind-the-scenes details. That concludes our in-depth summary of The Monkey. We're heading into March with a new theme, and while we can't reveal too much yet, let's just say it's going to be a little dark and a little twisted. Stay tuned for more!
How do you follow a film like Longlegs, the chilling riff on serial killer thrillers that became one of the cult smashes of 2024? The answer, if you're acclaimed writer-director Osgood Perkins, is to first swap out the pressure-cooker dread of that breakout hit. Next, add a cursed toy monkey. Then, harvest the wildest, darkest parts of your imagination for some of the most gruesome demises ever seen on screen. And finally, package all of the above into an existentialist comedy about embracing death. The result is The Monkey – a Stephen King adaptation inspired by the literary icon's 1980 short story of the same name, but very much a work of Oz's own invention. From the moment a flamethrower-wielding Adam Scott opens the film with a maniacal cameo, screaming as he scorches everything in his path, it's clear the movie is operating on a different tonal plane to Longlegs. But make no mistake, The Monkey is just as personal to Oz as that film and others before it, like The Blackcoat's Daughter and 2016's I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. Perhaps, in fact, even more so. As Oz explains in this moving spoiler conversation, the film is a meditation on death because death is something he's experienced up close in the most unimaginably tragic circumstances; on September 12 1992, his father, Psycho actor Anthony Perkins, died of AIDS-related pneumonia at his home in Los Angeles. Almost exactly nine years later, his mother, the actress and photographer Berry Berenson, was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 when it was hijacked by terrorists and flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre, on September 11, 2001. The Monkey, he says, features Theo James playing two roles as twin brothers Hal and Bill, because “that's my life,” as he puts it. He and his own brother Elvis Perkins, an acclaimed musician, became “buried in the rubble of the tragedy” of their mother's death on 9/11 and emerged with “differences more apparent than ever.” In the conversation you're about to hear, Oz tells us the extent to which the movie helped reconcile some of the feelings towards his brother. Al asks him about the ending of the film, which involves a plane crash – a very emotionally-loaded image, given his tragic family history. And he shares why accepting death is the only true way to find peace.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Blamison start off their Halloween series with a bit of a rocky start as Blake's mic seems to have been glitchy. First it sounds like Jamison is talking to himself, but eventually Blake's voice comes into the mix. This may be the case with the first three episodes...unfortunately. That being said we start our exploration with Osgood Perkins' first(?) film I Am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House which can only be found on Netflix much to our chagrin. We talk about watching this film inebriated or high or on acid and how nothing about this film seems like something that would get made now. Perkins hit the sweet spot with Netflix. Yet we find certain charms in the film. Also talked about: parenting, coming up with the name of our series, and the typical bullshit. Clip: Nathan For You, Sn. 2, Ep. 1
Just No Jables again this week so we're bearing Longlegs in mind to choose something from the writer/director's back catalogue. Also Day of the Jackal and One Life.
Filmen er skrevet og instrueret af Osgood Perkins (I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House), og udover Cage består rollelisten af Maika Monroe (It Follows) og Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina). Tusind tak fordi du lytter med!

David and Jessica finish October with another horror film, this time selecting I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016) off Netflix. Since they thought the film was a gothic horror story, they paired it with a Gin Sling for a Victorian cocktail they could make at home. How well does a slow burn ghost story go over with the couple? Would they recommend the Gin Sling even after realizing the film was set in what they believe is modern times? Stay tuned for these answers, and hear Jessica misremember movie titles as she and David recount some of their favorite ghost movies on this spooky season episode. The Gin Sling was made from a recipe taken from The Spruce Eats.David's comic book Night of the Chihuahuas can be ordered off its website. Thanks for listening! Synopsis Saint Maud is about a devout christian English nurse named Maud played by Morfydd Clark, who takes a job as an in house hospice nurse for an American ex-pat Amanda, played by Jennifer Ehle. Amanda is an ex-dancer/choreographer of some fame, that still holding onto as much drama and vanity as she can in her final moments. Maud becomes enamoured with Amanda and quickly takes her on as her personal project to save her soul before she dies. Maud starts off looking like a typical naive, but earnest believer, but soon is eventually revealed as a dangerously unhinged zealot. Review of Saint Maud This is my type of movie. It’s another film suggested by hard fucker Dustin Goebel. It is the best example of a slow burn. While not the same thing at all, this is the infinitely better version of “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House”. Unlike the aforementioned, the pacing is excellent. There is plenty of room given for character development and for things to unfold in a very natural way. Without much hand holding, you are given everything you need to know to unravel the puzzle that is Maud. If it weren’t for a couple disturbing flashbacks in the beginning of the film, you would never expect that this would be a horror movie. It really is impressive how off balance this film kept me. It felt like it could have gone in dozens of different directions. I think I would have been satisfied with any of them, because I was thoroughly on-board by the mid point of the movie. The last act really ups the tension because of the uncertainty of how it is going to end, and when it comes it is deeply disturbing and satisfying. I highly recommend seeing this movie. It’s up there with anything by Ari Aster or Robert Eggars. Are you afraid of ghosts? Alternate realities? People with buttons for eyes?! Join us on Parallel Fiction, where Jeff and Heather go through two stories that feature spooky elements. Heather covers the beloved graphic novel Coraline, while Jeff will be breaking down the Netflix ghost story I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House. After a casual synopsis of each work, Heather and Jeff share their analyses and recommendations for similar films and books you might enjoy if you like spooky stories. In this episode, spooky was taken as a broad idea of paranormal, supernatural, or scary stories. Directed by Oz Perkins, I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House is a tense, psychological movie with very high contrast in dark scenes, and sterile brightness in day light. Starring Ruth Wilson, Bob Balaban, Lucy Boynton, and Paulina Prentiss, the scares that come from this ghost story are built on anxiety and fear of the unknown. This is the perfect movie for Halloween season, especially for viewers who aren't too keen on movies with gore or jump scares. Fun fact: Director Osgood (Oz) Perkins is the son of Anthony Perkins, the original actor who portrayed Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho 1960 Coraline, written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by P. Craig Russell, is a young adult graphic novel following the life of young teenager Coraline. The titular character is faced with being held hostage in an alternate reality by the “Other Mother” for all eternity, unless she can release the souls of her family and of ghost children stuck in the Other World. Heather notes the award winning achievements of this story, even learning about it first in college where it was part of a young adult fiction course. Did you know? The name Coraline was a typo from writer Neil Gaiman. He liked the sound so much he kept it in the book, replacing the intended name Caroline. Tune in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each spooky story, how I Am The Pretty Thing Who Lives In The House and Coraline compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy it and let us know your thoughts on these spooky favorites! Jay is joined by his Twitter pal Micah (@McSwtrvst) to discuss Oz Perkins' slow burn haunting, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. Follow Daily Horror Habit on Instagram (@DailyHorrorHabit) and Twitter (@DailyHorrorPod) for daily updates.
Atmosphere abounds in this creepy, creaky, haunted house horror. The sophomore entry into Ozgood Perkins’ body of work sets a tone but ultimately falls short in it’s inability to lock into a cohesive story that pays off. Nonetheless, “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House” has fantastic skill in its artistic elements, leading Ryan to fall under the film’s spell, finding substance where Tim only found style, and leading to a “rent” and an “avoid,” respectively. Where we watched: Netflix I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016) Written and Directed by Ozgood Perkins RecommenDEADtions: First Cow / Mulan (1998) Next week’s film: The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)

Oz Perkins returns with his third feature, 2020's Gretel & Hansel, a deceptively intelligent and spooky subversion of the Grimm Brothers' famous fairy tale. Perkins, who helmed The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015) and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016), is known for slow-burning, heady films. And while Gretel & Hansel is no departure from the form, it sure is a wicked improvement. For fans of witches and The Witch.

Hey Class. Its Tyler here doing the show notes again. Like my lesson plans they may be a little incomplete :). This week we had a lot to discuss regarding the great found footage flick Lake Mungo and various forms of psychoanalysis. Enjoy. 2:20- Tyler talks about Deadpool 2. It was pretty good. Not amazing but totally worth his 10.00 investment in moviepass. Get your movie pass 2:30- Tyler is reading Jason Parents Book They Feed. It looks like its got zombie stuff in it. SUPER COOL!!!. Buy it here. 3:00- Mike and Tyler talk about Grimscribes Puppets another reference to Thomas Ligotti. Tyler tries to pretend he knows something about Ligotti. He does not. It is obvious. it is cringy and maybe a little pathetic. Mike mentions another podcast we love called the Outer Dark Podcast. It is totally worth a listen. 5:45- Mike recommends the episode of Pseudopod by Thomas Ligotti called Bungalow House. Download it here 8:00- For like the 8th episode in a row Tyler and Mike recommend Welcome to your Authentic Indian Experience by Rebbeca Roanhorse published by Apex. This story won a Nebula Award. You can read it for free. Tyler also mentions a poem by Sherman Alexie. The poem is called evolution and it is so good. Read it here. 16:30- Tyler discusses Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay. Tremblay recommends Lake Mungo and we totally understand why. 17:19 Tyler discusses Tubi TV. It is a pretty cool app. Check it out. 18:15 Tyler discusses Oz Perkins who directed Blackcoat's Daughter who will also direct the film adaptation of A Head Full of Ghosts. He also directed a Netflix original I am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House 23:30- Mike mentions that the oldest human remains ever were found in and around Lake Mungo. 24:30- Hold onto your butts the boys start talking about Slavoj Zizek. Specifically his concepts of the Parallax. The article 'Denegation and the Undead' from Screening the Past April 2018 by Kevin Fisher. 29:00- Mike talks about a book we reviewed on Signal Horizon called America's Dark Theologian by Douglas E. Cowan. Its a really great connection and an even better read. 35:30- Tyler talks about the article "Conjuring the real: Ghosts, technology and landscape in 'Lake Mungo'" in Screen Education Issue 82 September 2016 by Tyson Wils. Check it out for further reading. 37:00 Mike and Tyler are both obsessed with the short story by Ray Bradbury called The Toynbee Convector. The collection is really remarkable. 39:00 Both Mike and Tyler spend some time discussing Fahrenheit 451. 40:45 Mike mentions creepy photos of girls with Fairies. Here are some of them. Are you into Osgood Perkins films? And the music of his brother Elvis? And Ruth Wilson and Lucy Boynton and Bob Balaban and backwards heads and mold and hospice care??? You sound like kind of a weird person!! Maybe you'll like this podcast, then. We get confused about if Kate Mara and Rooney Mara are two people or one people, buzz market Publix, then Logan pretends that he watched a French cartoon to make us think he's fancy, and we get another piece to the puzzle of figuring out Dylan's home address! All this, plus I'm pretty sure I think we even remembered to talk about I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House!!! Pretty sure!
