Episode 61 of Goodfriends is longggg overdue! Recorded over the summer, Braden and Diego discuss all things movies and horror!
As 2024 comes to an end, we look in a rearview mirror filled with some amazing films, especially ones that came out this year. Filmmakers around the world wowed us with creative stories, intriguing plots and outstanding techniques. It is definitely a great time to be a horror fan. 2024 was another stellar year for us at the podcast, where we covered a wide variety of subjects, from Bigfoot to Amicus Films, from Women Directors to Al Adamson & Sam Sherman, to more obscure topics like German Expressionism, and much more. We also had an astonishing lineup of special guests including Severin's David Gregory, Vinegar Syndrome's Archivist Oscar Becher, HorrorHound's Aaron Crowell, and Will Morris from Oscarbate and The Music Box Theatre, just to name a few. One thing that continues through this year is our constant love and admiration for those that have made some long lasting impact on the genre, and our constant striving to help share that love with our listeners. Nothing excites us more than hearing that we've turned someone on to a film or filmmaker or even sub-genre that they might have not experienced before. And you can be damned sure that we plan to continue that in 2025. So join us in this extra long special episode as we go over our favorite viewings of this year, as well as some shout-outs and discussions on other films that came out in 2024. There are surprises every year in the world of cinema, you never quite know what's going to pan out and end up delivering the goods. A lot of things that sound good on paper end up being poor in execution, and vice versa. There's always the approach of relying on a filmmakers track record and having a reasonable amount of confidence in their next project, but even then there are disappointments and (usually) inevitable decline. There's the "brand loyalty" idea, where you stick with a franchise even though it starts SUCKING ASS, and in recent years no shortage of legacy sequels. Every year also brings it's share of unintentionally hilarious cinematic disasters. This year alone has brought us Megacockulus, Madame Web, Joker: Folie a Deux, Borderlands, Argylle, Tarot, Rebel Moon- Part Two, Imaginary, Night Swim, and The Exorcism, among others (add Kraven The Hunter to that list). Then, there's these films you barely hear shit about (or nothing about) until their release is imminent which pull a complete sneak attack and surprise the fuck out of you. Robert Winfree and Mark Radulich present their The Top 10 Worst Movies of 2024 So Far Review!Buckle up for a deep dive into the cinematic misfires of 2024 as Robert Winfree and Mark Radulich break down The Top 10 Worst Movies of 2024 So Far. In this episode, they'll tackle the films that, despite their big budgets, star-studded casts, or high expectations, fell flat in the eyes of critics and audiences alike. The list includes Lift, Night Swim, Atlas, Uglies, Damsel, Jackpot, Founders Day, The Out-Laws, Space Cadet, and Unfrosted—films that span genres but share the unfortunate distinction of being major disappointments. Whether they were streaming releases or big-screen disasters, these movies are now streaming on platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime, giving everyone the chance to see just how bad they really are.Similarities and Common Failures in 2024's Worst FilmsWhat links these movies together? First, many were high-concept projects that promised far more than they delivered. Lift and Atlas, for example, were both positioned as action-packed thrillers with an emphasis on high-stakes drama, yet both failed to meet expectations, offering little in terms of compelling storytelling or character development. Instead, they were bogged down by cliché-ridden plots and lackluster performances, with Lift in particular drawing criticism for being derivative and unimaginative. Similarly, Uglies and Damsel attempted to deliver social commentary or fantastical adventure but fell short due to underdeveloped narratives and weak execution.Audience reception for these films was brutal. Across the board, many of them scored low on Rotten Tomatoes, with some barely scraping above the 20% mark. For instance, Night Swim earned a dismal critical reception for its weak horror elements, uninspired jump scares, and incoherent plot. The Out-Laws, a Netflix comedy, was panned for being a tired rehash of slapstick humor with zero character chemistry. Meanwhile, Space Cadet's attempt at sci-fi comedy fell flat, with viewers and critics alike expressing frustration over its clunky dialogue and shallow characters.Box Office Bombs and Streaming FlopsFinancially, many of these films either underperformed at the box office or didn't even make it to theaters. Founders Day, Uglies, and Damsel were examples of films that may have seen moderate success had they been released in another era, but they couldn't compete with the major blockbuster franchises dominating the box office in 2024. Night Swim, one of the few theatrical releases among this list, quickly moved to streaming after a lackluster opening weekend, joining the ranks of other streaming originals that seem to churn out quickly, leaving little impact. These films also reflect a broader issue in 2024 cinema—streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime have become dumping grounds for mediocre or unfinished projects that might have otherwise struggled in a traditional theatrical model. Movies like The Out-Laws and Unfrosted felt like they were rushed to meet content quotas rather than crafted with genuine care for storytelling or innovation.Join Robert and Mark as they dissect what went wrong with these films, drawing comparisons to some of cinema's greatest flops and speculating on why even star power and slick marketing couldn't save these titles from the bottom of the barrel. If you love to hate bad movies or just want to avoid wasting your time on the year's biggest cinematic failures, this is the podcast for you!Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

In Reelfoot Lake, a backwoods bayou of the American South, lives an outcast freak – a lonely swamp dweller whose fishy features have earned him a strange moniker. Mystery and local superstition surround him, but when the Baxter brothers seek their revenge will they uncover the truth about the one they call…”Fish Head”. This original recording is an audio presentation (with sound effects and music) by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “Fish Head” by Irvin S. Cobb (1913). You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to a future episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem. (Honest! Next one coming up soon!) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7JYpOrSDoCfvPbjBn6DZGIXDlK-eOzpR). NOTE ABOUT PRONUNCIATION OF "SLOUGH" A number of helpful people have gotten in touch to tell me I should have pronounced "slough" as "slew" as that is how it is pronounced in that part of the world. However, it was not a word known to me (not used much in British English, at least not in the sense meant in this story) so I referred to Merriam-Webster dictionary which suggested US speakers (except in New England) would pronounce the word "slew" or "sloo", but added that British English speakers would usually say "slau" (like the English town) even if they were refererring to an American swamp. As a British English speaker myself that was what I went with. As I'm rather tired of people assuming I don't do any research when I record these damn stories, I thought I'd set the record straight. No need for anyone else to tell me it should be "slew". Any issues, take it up with the dictionary people.
With Joker: Folie à Deux releasing very soon, we felt it appropriate to revisit one of the best and most different comicbook movies ever made. We analyze what made it such a surprise success, almost as surprising as Todd Phillips completely separating from his comedy roots. We reflect on the story, both as huge Batman/Joker fans, but also just as an iconic film in cinema history for its visual style and the performances within. But I think most importantly, we discuss the portrayal of mental health and the relationship society has with it, as well as the tendency for people in bad situations to find the wrong people to blame and also elect just the worst people to hopefully lead them out of it. Then of course we also share our hopes and dreams (and mainly concerns) about the sequel in advance of its release. Before that, Dustin gives spoiler-free first impressions of Hit Man, Under Paris, Night Swim, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Jake also saw Hit Man, and randomly shares thoughts on Planes and Perfect Match season 2. What if streaming services are killing the magic of cinema? On this episode of Excuse the Intermission, Alex McCauley and Max Fosberg welcome you to a riveting discussion on the seismic shifts in the film industry. We start with a look back at the electrifying year of horror in 2024, before tearing into how streaming platforms are reshaping traditional revenue models and the theatrical experience. Using heavy-hitting examples like George Clooney and Brad Pitt's "Wolves" and the recent works of David Fincher, Max passionately argues how these changes are stifling filmmakers' opportunities for broader recognition and financial returns.Next, get the insider scoop on the unexpected theatrical release of "Alien Romulus," a decision that echoes the success of "Prey" and signals a significant moment for the industry. We break down the financial gymnastics behind movie productions, the pitfalls of bypassing the big screen, and why international box office performance matters more than ever. Celebrating the theatrical triumphs of "Poor Things" and "Long Legs," we examine how these films successfully navigate the new landscape of combined theatrical and streaming releases.Switching gears, we turn our attention to the horror genre's intriguing trends and standout films. From Hunter Schafer's compelling performances and strong female protagonists to the mysteries embedded in "Cuckoo," we leave no stone unturned. We explore the fascinating resurgence of mid-tier horror, the chilling allure of found footage and stop-motion horror, and how titles like "Night Swim," "Tarot," and "A Quiet Place Day One" are pushing creative boundaries. End the episode with a fun shoutout to our latest Instagram reel and stay updated with Excuse the Intermission on our socials. We had Vince of Modern Color on to talk about "There Goes the Dream." The writing process for their latest record was fragmented, as Vince has been personally juggling other projects and endeavors—being on the road with Militarie Gun while still touring with Modern Color. It took a little longer to write because they thrive on getting in a room together and bouncing ideas off each other. Nonetheless, the wait was well worth it. Usually, Fleming or Chad come in with a full song, and they start jamming to develop those ideas. The best part? They can be real with each other and give productive feedback. That all led to the carefully crafted songs on "There Goes the Dream." It was a recipe for success for the band. This record is all about making intentional changes. They focused on Fleming's writing and vocals first, instead of writing the music and adding lyrics later. Modern Color also got more personal with their songwriting, shortening the song lengths, and becoming more direct. These songs tell the story of growing up in the South Bay, surrounded by music everywhere they went. "Where's Kevin" is one of those stories—it's a handwritten apology to Fleming's mom about sneaking out as a kid. The title itself stems from a building manager who was never around when he was needed. And there's something for everyone, even an acoustic track like "Night Swim." Growing up in the metalcore scene in the South Bay, they played the same venues with the same bands every weekend. It felt stale, and that's when they realized they wanted to do something different. Since then, it's been a journey of finding the band's sound and pushing it in a new direction—that's been the driving force behind Modern Color. Balancing tours has shown Vince the importance of a stable lineup for the band to grow and continue to progress. As they reach 10 years with Modern Color, they reflect on the chemistry built from growing up together. Though our lineup wasn't solidified until they wrote "Pale" in Vince's room in 2015, the DIY spirit that started it all continues to push them forward. They are moving ahead, but they also know there's still so much work left to do. Stick around until the end to hear personal stories from Vince duing our "lighning round." I really loved hearing why Vince explain how he was fidgity as a kid and was always drumming against some type of surface.

Erin and Paul review two pool-themed thrillers: the sultry 1969 Alain Delon/Romy Schneider slow-burner LA PISCINE, and the 2024 Blumhouse horror film NIGHT SWIM.
Look, like any year, 2024 has already had its fair share of traaaaash horror genre offerings. Night Swim and Imaginary immediately come to mind. No reason to bury the lead here, TAROT is another one. So why review it at all then you might ask? Because it's fun goddamnit. We're doing the work so you don't have to. "I read your cards. It's over. Welcome to the Nick Taylor Horror Show!As always, each episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show explores how today's horror filmmakers are getting their movies made while deconstructing their methods and career strategies into practical insights that you can use on your own horror filmmaking journey. This includes their creative processes, funding resources, favorite books & tools, key life lessons, and much, much more.Today's guest is Charlie Saroff, a cinematographer who has quickly established himself as a powerhouse in the horror genre.Charlie's breakout work on Natalie Erika James' Relic garnered widespread acclaim for its haunting atmosphere and masterful visual storytelling. This success led to his collaboration with Parker Finn on Smile and his upcoming work on the Smile sequel. In today's episode, Charlie and I dive deep into the craft of horror cinematography, and strategies for creating tension and fear through visuals. We also get into his keys for successful collaborations between directors and DPs and Charlie shares valuable advice for filmmakers looking to enhance their overall visual storytelling skills. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Charlie Saroff:Utilize Misdirection. Scares often rely on the element of surprise. When crafting shots that elicit fear or tension, use decoys and misdirection to direct the audience's attention in one direction so you can surprise them from another. This is largely achieved through composition and lighting. This relies on the principle that what the audience doesn't see is as important as what they do see. By manipulating their expectations, you can create a more impactful scare. For example, using dark corners or areas of the frame to hint at something lurking just out of sight can build suspense and heighten the eventual reveal. This, of course partially relies on editing but starts with what's on screen.Plan but Be Flexible. Charlie says that no matter how much you plan at best 90% of it will go right while the other 10% will be complete chaos. It's important to put yourself in a position to leverage that chaos. Thorough prep with shot lists and storyboards is crucial, however, it's equally important to remain open to spontaneous opportunities that arise on set. David Lynch advocates for being fully present on set to recognize and maximize visual opportunities that present themselves serendipitously. While planning ensures you have a roadmap and backup plan, being flexible allows you to adapt to the changing dynamics of a scene, which can often lead to unexpectedly brilliant shots.Test your gear, test your look. Testing is crucial to understand how different lenses and cameras perform under various conditions and to ensure consistency in your film's visual style. Charlie conducts thorough camera and lens tests to determine the best equipment and experiment with different desired looks and uses the results to determine which gear to use before he makes his final selection. He will even go so far as to test out how different paint colors read with different lenses and cameras. This thorough testing process ensures the film's visual consistency and quality.Follow Charlie Sarroff at:IMDb ProfileInstagramWebsiteX (Twitter)Vimeo

Join Curtis and Taylor as we finish up our Scary Month of May (SMOM, as we've coined it) on the final day of the month – a little late for our normal schedule, but extra dramatic for our gimmick (which is, of course, what matters). A star studded cast joins Guy Ritchie regular Jason Statham in Revolver, the British auteur's violent meditation on the Ego and revenge. Ray Liotta, Andre Benjamin, Mark Strong, Vincent Pastore and Francesca Annis are all members of warring crime syndicates with Statham as the ex-con caught in the center. Ritchie was ultimately unhappy with the theatrical version and reinstated and rearranged many scenes to make his 110 minute version. On this week's show I talked to Rod Blackhurst, the director of the new film Blood for Dust, about … well, a whole bunch of stuff. From his early shorts on the comedy website Funny or Die starring Dave Franco and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, to a documentary about Amanda Knox, to the horror short “Night Swim” (which recently received the feature-length treatment), to his new picture with the great Scoot McNairy and an all-star supporting cast that includes Ethan Suplee, Stephen Dorff, Josh Lucas, and Kit Harrington, we cover his whole career. Blood for Dust hits VOD and has a limited theatrical engagement six days from now, and if you're in the mood for a western neo-noir that deals with people who feel real (and have real-feeling problems), you're not going to want to miss it.
