We're late this week, we know! We apologize, things are a little crazy right now, but we didn't want to let you all down. This week we have New York Times best selling author Daniel Kraus with us to talk about his new book, Pay the Piper. This is Daniel's second co-authored project with the one and only George Romero as Daniel has finished two manuscripts George started before his passing. Along with some talk about Pay the Piper and finishing the works of a legend like Romero, we are also talking about the 2020 Adam Egypt Mortimer film, Archenemy.
Adam Egypt Mortimer is an American filmmaker, Producer and graphic novel writer. Originally from Boston, Adam kicked off his directing career with Some Kind of Hate in 2015 and followed that up with 2019's Daniel Isn't Real and 2020's Arch Enemy. But Adam doesn't stop at films; he's also ventured into comics, co-creating series like Ballistic and Black Star Renegades. In this episode Adam opens up about his journey. We chat about facing personal fears as a director, easing the pressure when making your first film, and staying adaptable when shit goes sideways on set.Adam shares his thoughts on enjoying the filmmaking process, keeping your passion alive, the importance of continuous learning, and even some of his favorite horror deep cuts. Adam delivers an incredibly insightful and candid interview, and I got a lot of advice as well as reassurance from this conversation. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Please welcome, Adam Egypt Mortimer. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Adam Egypt Mortimer:Identify and address your anxieties. Filmmaking demands a wide range of skills, as Sidney Lumet emphasizes in his book Making Movies. Directors need to be renaissance people, well-versed in everything from art and psychology to music and literature. It can be overwhelming to juggle these diverse disciplines, but an effective director has to recognize their weaknesses and actively work on them. For Adam, working with actors was a major source of insecurity, so he made it a priority to study Judith Weston's work to improve in that area before approaching his first movie.Depressurize your first film. There's a common belief that your first film needs to be a masterpiece like Reservoir Dogs, Blood Simple, or Brick. However, Adam argues that this pressure can harm you creatively and cause your movie to suffer. He suggests accepting from the outset that your first film will have flaws, and that's okay. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on proving to yourself and the world that you can complete what you start. By alleviating some of the pressure, you allow yourself more creative freedom and ultimately will make a better film.Adapt at a Darwinian level. Adam's story about a lead actor falling ill on a crucial production day is a powerful example of adaptability. When faced with this setback, he intentionally avoided panicking and instead saw it as an opportunity to create something new. He reassured himself and his crew that this disaster could lead to an opportunity to make a scene that was even better than was originally planned in the script. While this mindset might seem like wishful thinking, it underscores the level of strength and resilience you'll need to develop as as a director because shit will happen—you need to not only handle it but use it to your advantage.Relax and enjoy the journey. Reflecting on his career, Adam wishes he could tell his younger self to enjoy the process more. Making movies takes time, effort, and a bit of luck, so it's crucial to relax and give yourself the space to do it right. He specifically mentioned that he would encourage his younger self to not be so hard on himself and to watch more cool French movies. The message is clear: whatever inspires you, make time for it, and remember to enjoy the journey that led you to fall in love with cinema in the first place.Show NotesMovies:Some Kind of HateDaniel Isn't RealArch EnemyBad Day at Black RockEasy Riders, Raging BullsThe ExorcistPersonaFight ClubAlienVideodromeBride of FrankensteinMartyrsPossessionBugKiller...

What is it like to give up everything for a dream and what can a tragic Hollywood production teach us? Today we will put headlines aside and pay a tribute to a woman, mother, wife and a cinematographer - Halyna Hutchins. Originally from Ukraine, member of ICG: International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600), she graduated from American Film Institute in 2015. Her graduation project “Hidden”, co-filmed with director Ryan Farzad, was shown at the Camerimage International Film Festival in Poland. In 2018, she became one of the first eight female filmmakers to participate in the Fox DP Lab, which was created to empower female filmmakers. In 2019, American Cinematographer magazine named her a "rising star" of cinema as a Director of Photography. "Darlin'", a horror feature lensed by Hutchins and directed by Pollyanna McIntosh (The Walking Dead), has premiered at the SXSW film festival 2019 playing internationally at the Edinburgh Film Festival and received several international film awards. Her work on Adam Egypt Mortimer's art house superhero action film "Archenemy", starring Joe Manganiello, premiered at Beyond Fest 2020 and was in official competition at the Sitges International Film Festival, receiving a nomination for Best Motion Picture. Halyna's recent work also includes "Blindfire", a feature film written and directed by Mike Nell received Best Crime Drama at the Houston International Film Festival, 2020. Halyna Hutchins shot 30 films (short, features, TV series). On Thursday October 21st 2021 while working on the latest feature western film #Rust at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico she received a deadly wound from a shot fired by an award winning #AlecBaldwin (main actor and producer of the film ) with a prop gun that turned out to be loaded with real ammo just before the next take of a film. According to Los Angeles Times the same day a few hours before the incident a group of cinematography union crew members walked away from the set, to protest the working conditions of a low-budget film production. It was also reported that a few days before, the stunt double of Alec Baldwin accidentally fired 2 real rounds, from a prop gun which raised a number of concerns within the crew members, however these concerns were not addressed and production was rushed to continue. Safety protocols standard in the industry, including gun inspections, were not strictly followed (according to the witnesses). Investigation is ongoing with no charges filed as of now. A mother and a wife, Halyna was only 42 at the time. Her story proved that hard work and passion for your craft can make wonders and open many doors in life regardless of where you start from. My heart goes out to her family, friends and co-workers as well as all film industry workers who have suffered major injuries and lost their lives to their profession and a “The Great Silent”.

Gabe Joey and Chris talk... Daniel Isn't Real is a 2019 American psychological horror film directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer, from a screenplay by Mortimer and Brian DeLeeuw, based upon the novel In This Way I Was Saved by DeLeeuw. It stars Miles Robbins, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sasha Lane, Mary Stuart Masterson, Hannah Marks, Chukwudi Iwuji and Peter McRobbie. As a child, shy and troubled Luke witnesses the aftermath of a mass shooting at a neighborhood coffee shop. He meets another boy among the onlookers at the scene: cool and confident Daniel, who invites him to play and quickly becomes his friend. Although adults such as Luke's mother, Claire (Mary Stuart Masterson), cannot see Daniel, he appears physically real to Luke. The boys become close playmates, and their connection helps Luke cope with his parents' divorce. Their friendship comes to an abrupt end when Daniel convinces Luke that blending an entire bottle of Claire's psychiatric medication into a smoothie will give her superpowers. Instead, it results in a near-fatal poisoning. Claire convinces Luke to send Daniel away by symbolically locking him in her mother's old dollhouse. Years later, the college-aged Luke (Miles Robbins) is paralyzed by anxiety over his future, his social life and his responsibility to his mother, who struggles with paranoid delusions and a hatred of her own reflection. He confides to his therapist, Dr. Cornelius Braun (Chukwudi Iwuji), that he is afraid he will eventually become just like her. One night, while sleeping over at his childhood home, Luke unlocks the dollhouse. Daniel (Patrick Schwarzenegger) reappears as an adult. His influence initially appears benign as he helps Luke thwart Claire's suicide attempt, succeed in school, and begin a romance with an artist named Cassie (Sasha Lane). However, he quickly starts exhibiting aggressive behavior, becoming enraged when Luke doesn't obey him. When Luke won't have sex with a psychology student named Sophie (Hannah Marks) on a date, Daniel forcibly takes over his body, has rough sex with Sophie and attacks Luke's roommate. Luke is banned from campus as a result and begins to question his own sanity, believing he may have schizophrenia. He attempts to banish Daniel back to the dollhouse but is unsuccessful. Luke becomes increasingly unstable, convinced that Daniel is taking over his body while he sleeps. He visits the father of John Thigpen, the shooter whose crime began the film, and learns John also had an invisible friend named Daniel. Luke begins to realize Daniel is a supernatural entity, not an imaginary friend. Dr. Braun makes a late-night house call in an attempt to separate Luke and Daniel, but only succeeds in allowing Daniel to take over Luke's body and banish Luke's consciousness to the dollhouse. Daniel then kills Braun. He decides his next target will be Cassie. Daniel reveals his true nature to Cassie, describing himself as "a traveler," before chasing her to the rooftop of her apartment building. Cassie begs Luke to come back to reality; hearing her from inside the dollhouse, he summons the will to escape. In a final confrontation with Luke, Daniel claims he has helped people for centuries, but none of them have deserved his help. Luke calls him a parasite. Luke realizes he and Daniel can never truly be separated. After ensuring Cassie has escaped to safety, he kills himself by jumping from the roof. Cassie lies down beside his body. Daniel, surrounded by an otherworldly darkness, reverts to his true monstrous form, implying he will now seek out a new host.

On this installment of The PAPER STREET Podcast, hosts Becky Sayers and Shawn Talley discuss the current state of films and festivals, or lack thereof, and the pros and cons of South By Southwest and Amazon partnering to bring SXSW—a version of it, anyway—to the streaming platform. While a great move for consumers, they debate the possible risk and reward it poses for filmmakers who opt into it. They're joined on the show by Tim Anderson, programming coordinator for the Florida Film Festival, who gives a lot of great info and advice on getting into festivals, and talks about the current and future state of fests and theatrical releases. The hosts also play a round of Not-So-Rapid Fire 15 with Tim, talk up Adam Egypt Mortimer's 2019 film DANIEL ISN'T REAL and the SHUDDER streaming service, plus Becky's Deep Cut Slasher of the Week, and more! Filmmaker Adam Egypt Mortimer (SOME KIND OF HATE, DANIEL ISN'T REAL) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen for a lively discussion about his career journey and the sacrifices one must make in order to make filmmaking their life. From directing music videos… to surviving the empty promises of financing that never materialized… to picking himself back up and refusing to accept defeat… to defeating the boxing beast that is Josh Ethier in the ring at Fantastic Fest (while nursing a set of broken ribs to boot!)… to the 7.5 years that it took to make his latest film DANIEL ISN'T REAL (in theaters 12.6.19)… Mortimer pulls no punches in telling it like it truly is. Dr. Arwen lives up to her proud title as an officially certified service animal and provides emotional support for a patient wracked with guilt over his recent career choice, opening up a Pandora's box of raw emotions over the life choices that Green and Lynch have committed themselves to (for better or for worse) in one of the most epic “Hollywood Therapy” sessions to date. On todays episode we talk to both Micah Gallo and Adam Egypt Mortimer about their films. First up is Micah Gallo talking to us just before the world premiere of Itsy Bitsy. Micah talks to us about creating creature effects and the inspirations behind the movie. Then we we're joined by Adam Egypt Mortimer to talk to us about the cosmic and psychological horror of Daniel Isn't Real https://twitter.com/adamegypt https://twitter.com/ItsyBitsyMovie https://jumpscare.podbean.com https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/jumpscare/id1436554914?mt=2 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH00Ygf2EQQOmqmo5_RsEyg
Adam Egypt Mortimer's latest feature, like many others currently on the festival circuit, is the result of an enormous amount of careful planning and obsessing over details. About thirty-two pages or so's worth to be precise. In pre-production for Daniel Isn't Real Mortimer created what he calls a "style guide", which is essentially a heavily detailed look book that breaks down every single aspect of production for the key members of his crew. This includes not only notes on how the film should look aesthetically, but also the reasoning behind the choice of gear for each shot and how each scene relates thematically to the broader arc of the story. The guide played an essential role in both keeping the crew on the same page and allowing key production members to keep Mortimer on track if they saw him straying from the mission. The mission, in this case, was to convey the harrowing story of a troubled college freshman named Luke who, after undergoing a violent family trauma, resurrects his childhood imaginary friend Daniel to help him cope. The film features a few young members of Hollywood royalty in it's cast with both Patrick Schwarzenneger and Miles Robbins playing the schizophrenic duo. NFS sat down with Mortimer for a case study of sorts back at SXSW. We discuss the process and components involved in creating the perfect look book, using his own work as a guide.
Director Adam Egypt Mortimer (DANIEL ISN'T REAL, SOME KIND OF HATE) joins us for a wide-ranging deep dive into the David Cronenberg classic. This is probably our most intellectual episode to date as we delve into sexual repression, violence on film, artistic motifs and the M.A.S.K. Boulder Hill Playset. As always the BLOOD RAGE theme song cover is by Matt Akers. Check out his bandcamp. Particularly recommend the first song on Rage. That song rules! Follow us on Instagram @archersofhorrorpodcast.

This week's episode can only be described as . . . WHAT THE F***?!?!? Because we're checking out a collection of demented horror tales that put some unique spins on some of our favorite AND not-so-favorite . . . Holidays! With a roster of directors that include Kevin Smith, Gary Shore, Adam Egypt Mortimer, Scott Stewart, Nicholas McCarthy, Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch, Sarah Adina Smith and Anthony Scott Burns, Holidays is definitely a film that sticks with you, whether you like it or not!
Last week, Producer/Editor Jon Fusco sat down with several of the impressive line-up of genre directors from the new horror anthology film Holidays, during its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Joining him on the podcast are Sarah Adina Smith (The Midnight Swim), Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact, At The Devil's Door), Dracula Untold director Gary Shore and the man in charge of piecing the whole thing together director/producer Adam Egypt Mortimer. The discussion ranges from Shore's (somewhat easy) decision to go from directing a studio blockbuster back to indie shorts, respecting (or ignoring) influences in filmic history, and how challenges on set end up benefitting your creative drive.
The horror anthology, Holidays, has recently released on VOD and in this special episode, Aaron sits down with Producer / Director Adam Mortimer and Star Jocelin Donahue to discuss their new film. HOLIDAYS is an anthology feature film that puts a uniquely dark and original spin on some of the most iconic and beloved holidays of all time by challenging our folklore, traditions and assumptions. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Teen angst, one of the most vivid plots for any media, whether book or film. With it comes so many emotions: anger, fear, melancholy, confusion ... but also love, faith, and hope. The new film, Some Kind of Hate, takes its shot with the subject of adolescence and all the whirlwind passion that goes along with it. A ghost story at its heart, the film is much more. Its in ways a tale of anger and fear, its evolution towards hate, until a form of deliverance may give relief to the protagonists while leaving a trail of savagery and demolition. Taking place in the southwestern USA, young adolescent teenagers try to create some sort of existence within their reform school. When the bottom drops out for them in normal society, each finds themselves as exiled. Lincoln, a young brooding teenager, may be surrounded by others like him, yet still feels like an outsider. A beautiful troubled girl, Kaitlin, befriends him which may be the first good thing to happen to him in years. However, when one of the reform school bullies is found dead, folks begin to wonder if his suicide was actually something more sinister. Directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer and co-written with Brian DeLeeuw, Some Kind of Hate includes a cast of mostly unknowns. Yet, one could say that a few of the performers could be future breakout candidates. Co-host Philip specifically pointed out Grace Phipps who played Kaitlin within podcast Episode 213 as someone to watch. Dark Discussions Podcast called the film the 14th best horror film of 2015. Listen to your co-hosts give their thoughts to the film. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
