The Universal Monsters franchise has seen numerous failed re-launches over the years, but after Leigh Whannell's Invisible Man hit big back in 2020, hopes were high that he could do the same for the Wolf Man. Sadly, despite a solid cast featuring Julia Garner and Christopher Abbot, the film could not overcome the stench of failure after a poorly received costume leak and lackluster trailers, resulting in tepid reviews and box office grosses. Join Sebastian, Jennifer and Rodney as they get down with the sickness and try to find the lycanthrope in this de-fanged failure.

We remember his reimagining of the Invisible Man in 2020, another attempt at reimagining a classic Universal Monster as well as his hits Saw and Insidious.  This lean and mean production features the seasoned actors Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, playing a husband and wife dealing with the werewolf business as an infection as opposed to a curse.  Intro: “Necromaniacs” – Mike Hill Outro: “The Shift”– Samhain

*The video version of this episode is delayed due to technical difficulties*Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesCinemaCon, the world's largest gathering for the motion picture industry, where studios and exhibitors showcase their upcoming film and theatrical offerings, reigns supreme this week, as the event was held in Las Vegas, March 31 through April 3. Several of the major studios we talk about on a near-weekly basis had plenty to dazzle us with, so let's break it down by studio and/or IP:Sony leaned heavily into its Cash Cow, meaning it was all things Spider-Man. In addition to placing Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the final film of the animated Spider-Verse trilogy, back on the calendar for a June 4, 2027 release, Tom Holland took the stage to reveal the official title for his upcoming fourth Spider-Man film: Brand New Day, along with a new July 31, 2026 release date.Over at Warner Bros and DC, James Gunn ran the show, as he's been known to do. While the filmmaker shared an extensive sneak peek at his upcoming Superman, which was released online the next day; he also revealed that, circa 2018, he was approached to direct a Henry Cavill-led Superman film for the DCEU but opted to direct Suicide Squad instead. On the subject of James Gunn's Superman, Nathan Fillion, who portrays Green Lantern Guy Gardner in the film, was announced to be reprising the part in HBO's upcoming Lanterns series.Marvel Studios shared a new trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps with CinemaCon attendees, which reportedly ‘electrified' and confirmed a fairly significant plot point regarding Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm, as well as giving a first look at Julia Garner's Shala Bal Silver Surfer. Marvel's other, fast approaching, summer tentpole, Thunderbolts*, also had time to shine as Florence Pugh shared 5 minutes of footage with the audience, which teased the various miscreants' initial allegiances.Independent of CinemaCon, but still timely, Lucasfilm released the trailer for Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld, an animated anthology series that follows in the footsteps of previous ‘Tales' series, this time with a focus on bounty hunters Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane.Disney's offerings also included CinemaCon exclusive trailers for Avatar: Fire & Ash, Tron: Ares and Zootopia 2. Lionsgate announced an animated John Wick prequel directed by Shannon Tindle and with Keanu Reeves expected to voice the titular character. I missed Leigh Whannell's newest film, WOLF MAN, in theaters. Bit of a bummer since he's a director who's earned my highest personal honor of earning my view purely off of goodwill - no trailer, no social media post needed. So what was I to do? Nothing, but that's where Universal Pictures stepped in and (thankfully) sent me a review copy of the WOLF MAN Blu-ray (Seriously, y'all. Thank you.)WOLF MAN changes quite a bit from the original source material. The werewolf transformation develops not as a curse but rather, a disease, an infection. Instead of a fur-covered beast with extended snout, David Cronenberg's THE FLY inspires a look that stems from the idea of two separate genomes warring within the same body. It's more akin to the creatures in Alex Garland's ANNIHILATION.But where WOLF MAN differs the most is in its family story. Christopher Abbott plays Blake, husband to Charlotte (the seriously-needs-a-goddamned-Oscar-as-of-like-yesterday Julia Garner) and father to Ginger - nickname Snaps? - (Matilda Firth). After his father's death, Blake inherits the remote Oregon farm in which he spent his childhood (complicated at best, emotionally abusive at worst).Upon arrival, Blake and family are attacked by a mysterious creature. Blake sustains a scratch wound and if you've seen a werewolf movie, you know that in here lies the inevitable. It's just a matter of time. But the real tragedy of WOLF MAN doesn't just lie in the creature of it, but rather the character. Blake desperately tries to be a kinder, less angry father and husband than the example he experienced. But old environments bring that nature-nurture battle back to a head. Some wounds may simply be too deep to overcome. This movie may be paced a little wonky and some of the ideas are executed a little too silly for its own good, but goddamn, did this hit hard for this father of a 4 and 1.5 year old.On the director's commentary, Whannell talks about the need to follow one's own barometer for success. If you laugh or cry or fear your own material, it'll translate. And I'm so happy to report Whannell, for me, at least, is 3 for 3.---Please rate, review & subscribe to The Movies wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow The Movies on Instagram & Bluesky: linktr.ee/themovies_pod

A reboot of The Wolf Man franchise, the film stars Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, and Sam Jaeger. The plot follows a family man seeking to protect his wife and daughter from a werewolf, only to become infected and slowly transform into the creature. Jason Blum produces alongside his Blumhouse Productions banner. We then discuss 'I'm Still Here' (Ainda Estou Aqui), a 2024 political biographical drama film directed by Walter Salles from a screenplay by Murilo Hauser and Heitor Lorega, based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva's 2015 memoir of the same name. It stars Fernanda Torres and Fernanda Montenegro as Eunice Paiva, a mother and activist coping with the forced disappearance of her husband, the dissident politician Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), during the military dictatorship in Brazil. Lastly, we talk 'Bulworth', a 1998 American political satire black comedy film co-written, co-produced, directed by, and starring Warren Beatty. It co-stars Halle Berry, Oliver Platt, Don Cheadle, Paul Sorvino, Jack Warden, and Isaiah Washington. Episode 45 - Review: Wolfman (2025)Remember back in 2017 when Universal tried launching their Monsters Universe of movies with “The Mummy” starring Tom Cruise? Even with the attempt to sneak in Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, that movie became an epic mess. “Wolf Man” is a second bite at the apple for Universal, with Leigh Whannell (“Saw” writer and “Upgrade”, “The Invisible Man” director) directing and horror king Jason Blum (Blumhouse Productions) producing this film. What this film has going for it is its strong use of storytelling. The movie explores themes of parents, their kids, and the effort not to pass on mistakes from one generation to the next. It's a very cool concept that is executed well for both how the starts and ends too. The setting, the actors (an amazing main cast: Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, and Mathilda Firth) all shine. Whannell also brings much of the production crew back together from his hit movie “The Invisible Man” for this movie. The sound design is incredible—easily the most creative aspect of the film. Can lightning strike twice for Universal's revamped Monsters Universe, with its smaller scale but bigger scares? Does “Wolf Man” deliver the chills and thrills you'd expect from a monster movie? I get into it all here, including surprises with this movie's budget and its interesting origins, which connect to director Derek Cianfrance and actor Ryan Gosling (both of whom previously teamed up on the excellent 2013 film “The Place Beyond the Pines”).“Wolf Man” is now playing in theaters. We have a great year of movies, shows, reviews, and recommendations ahead. Please be sure to leave a review—it helps the podcast!Have a great time at the movies, and thanks for listening. This is a public episode. In 1941, we got the classic Lon Chaney Jr./Bela Lugosi “The Wolf Man.” Chaney looked more like an angry psychotic meth head with a Justin Timberlake haircut back then. Now in 2025, we get a much updated hairy, scary dude with “Wolf Man” directed by Leigh Whannell. This isn't Whannell's first classic monster movie re-make rodeo. He also directed the 2020 “The Invisible Man” which was a critical and commercial hit. In “Wolf Man” we're introduced to Blake and his wife, Charlotte, and daughter Ginger. Blake grew up in the remote wilderness of Oregon with just his Dad where all manner of danger lurks, but is now a writer in San Francisco. Events have him return to Oregon with his wife and daughter to his childhood home. His Dad with him, and now Blake with his daughter, are aggressive with how committed they are to keeping their child safe. It turns out, for good reason, from what we see in this movie. On the way up to the house, they get into an accident, in the middle of the woods. Soon it's made apparent, they are not alone, and this new presence is no friend. Soon they find themselves in Blake's childhood home trying to keep a wolf man out, but since Blake was cut by the wolf man, Charlotte and Ginger find that a danger is slowly emerging from inside the house. Time is ticking away for them. Will they survive the wolf man outside and what Blake is becoming on the inside? Is it worth finding out? Check out this episode to hear what I think. “Wolf Man” stars Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, Benedict Hardie, Sam Jaeger, Mathilda Firth, Leigh Whannell, Ben Prendergast, Milo Cawthorne and Zac Chandler. Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

This week on the I Hate Critics Movie Review Podcast, we delve into an eclectic mix of films that tackle themes ranging from psychological transformation to comedic misadventures and the dark underbelly of suburban life. Here's what we're covering: Wolf Man (2025) Leigh Whannell's reimagining of the 1941 classic takes a deeply psychological approach to the werewolf mythos. Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner deliver haunting performances in this story about lycanthropy as a metaphor for degenerative illness and family trauma. With its poignant themes and atmospheric direction, "Wolf Man" is a horror film that lingers long after the credits roll. One of Them Days (2025) Keke Palmer and SZA shine in this hilarious buddy comedy directed by Lawrence Lamont. As Dreux and Alyssa, they embark on a chaotic quest to recover their lost rent money. Produced by Issa Rae's Hoorae Media, the film is filled with laughs, heart, and sharp social commentary. Critics have praised the chemistry between the leads, making it a standout entry in the buddy-comedy genre. A Different Man (2024) Sebastian Stan stars in this darkly comedic psychological exploration of identity and beauty. Aaron Schimberg's film has been hailed as a thought-provoking masterpiece, earning accolades such as a spot on the National Board of Review's top 10 independent films list and a place on Sight & Sound's Best 50 Movies of 2024. Blue Velvet (1986) David Lynch's neo-noir psychological thriller remains a seminal work in cinematic history. Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, and Dennis Hopper deliver unforgettable performances in this surreal exploration of crime and the duality of human nature. "Blue Velvet" juxtaposes idyllic suburban life with unsettling darkness, solidifying its place as a controversial yet classic piece of cinema. Synopsis Wolf Man is a movie about Blake, a family man struggling to make his marriage work and to be a better man than his father was. When Blake gets a letter in the mail informing him that his father who went missing years earlier has finally been officially declared dead by the state, he and his family leave their busy city life to pack up his father's old farmhouse and spend some time in the mountains. The wooded area surrounding the house is ominous and filled with local legends of men with the face of the wolf, but surely it's a good idea to bring your wife and young daughter to live there for a summer. If I were to spend anymore time talking about the synopsis of this movie I would end up giving everything away as there isn't much more to this film. Review of Wolf Man (2025)  When I saw the trailer for Wolfman I was disappointed. Except for An American Werewolf in London, I've never seen a werewolf movie that wasn't extremely middle of the road, and from the marketing, this movie looked to be no different. But I was wrong. It was actually somehow a little worse than middle of the road. I was excited to see Julia Garner cast as the female lead because I've really enjoyed her performances in other things such as Ozark, Inventing Anna, and The Assistant. But I was surprised to find that her character was bland and uninteresting. At first, I figured she kind of butchered the role, but it soon became apparent that the real problem was the writing. The dialog felt cold and emotionless. Even during scenes that were supposed to be touching, suspenseful, or exciting, all of the characters seemed to deliver the most boring inhuman lines. The worst case of this was the daughter played by Matilda Firth. It was as if the writers had never met a child in real life and were just guessing at what a child might speak like. The result is a family that I couldn't care less about. The reveal towards the end of the movie is very easy to see coming and I was able to call it about 10 minutes into the movie. The monster design is uninteresting, the movie drags on, and it gives no meaningful contribution to the werewolf subgenre. Score 4/10

Wolf Man Interview: Julia Garner Thinks Every Actor Should Do Horror At Least Once

Julia Garner has amassed an incredibly varied filmography over the years. Her first feature credit was the Sundance darling Martha Marcy May Marlene, she won three Emmys for playing Ruth Langmore in Netflix's hit crime drama Ozark, and she's about to make her franchise debut in one of the most anticipated films of the year, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, there's one particular genre she keeps coming back to, and given it's a personal favorite genre, I'm thrilled about it. Garner is delivering a steady stream of horror movies. Her latest in that department is Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man, a new spin on the 1941 classic. In this version, Christopher Abbott and Garner play Blake and Charlotte, a husband and wife struggling with their relationship. When Blake receives a death certificate for his estranged father and the keys to his childhood home, he thinks that could be just the getaway they need to get things back on track. Along with their young daughter, Ginger (Matilda Firth), they head out to the remote house in the mountains of Oregon. However, just before arriving, they're attacked and Blake suffers a scratch that kicks off a horrific transformation. With Wolf Man now playing in theaters nationwide, Garner joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to revisit her journey in film and television thus far, with an extra special emphasis on her experience working in the horror genre. We've got some mediocre January movies and a lengthy news segment to keep you company on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day. First, we review "Wolf Man," director Leigh Whannell's take on the classic creature feature. Christopher Abbott stars as a husband and father who takes his family back to his childhood home in the Oregon woods. Bad things happen. Julia Garner and Matilda Firth co-star. In theaters. Then, Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx re-team for the generic comedy "Back in Action." Diaz (in her first movie in a decade) and Foxx play ex-spies in suburbia who get dragged back in the fray when their cover is blown. Their shocked kids must go along for the adventure, too. Ironic needle drops and bad special effects ensue. Streaming now on Netflix. Finally, it's a jam-packed Movie News LIVE! We talk about the state of the LA Wildfires, awards season, and how they'll affect each other in the weeks to come. Plus we try to untangle the whole Justin Baldoni/Blake Lively "It Ends With Us" fiasco, which has ended with them suing each other. And of course, we remember the singular David Lynch, who died this week at 78. Thanks for being with us during this busy, difficult time. And make sure to join us at our YouTube channel on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 8am Pacific for our Oscar Nominations livestream, which will be a fundraiser for wildfire relief efforts. This week Megan saw WOLF MAN (2:20), director and co-writer Leigh Whannell's latest trip down the horror highway, starring Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner. Megan likes this new take on Universal's legendary Wolf Man…until she doesn't. A good start, a meh finish. Then Evan and Dave join in when the conversation turns to NIGHT CALL (16:17), Michiel Blanchart's tense and nimble French-language thriller about a locksmith (Jonathan Feltre) who has the misfortune of opening a door…TO CRIME! (See what we did there?) A seemingly innocent call makes a normal shift turn nightmarish as lead character Mady is conned into opening the door, is chased by criminals, chased by more criminals, chased by cops…you get the idea. We all enjoyed this clever, fast-paced, and frenetic thriller. Then we all weigh in on Cameron Diaz's first screen role since 2014, the Netflix spy thriller BACK IN ACTION (44:21), directed by Seth Gordon. Don't let the lazy title fool you: The screenplay is just as lazy as the title! Ho ho! Not for nothing, this movie throws in just about every action trope known to humankind, but it doesn't do anything particularly well. Good thing Diaz cranks the charm to 100, and she has an easy chemistry with her equally charming co-star Jamie Foxx. But otherwise…bleh. Over on Patreon, we talk about Max Eggers and Sam Eggers's 2024 horror flick THE FRONT ROOM, starring Brandy.
