With a ghost-seeing eye, a zombie outbreak in the park, a demonic Japanese cult, and an alien invasion, this film has some crazy horror shorts that are sure to entertain. With a modern take on seances and almost comparing the possession to a high, this film has a very unique take on demon possession. This is the full-length feature directorial debut of the Philippou brothers, and they deliver with an original concept that has shocking moments. They're able to successfully bridge prior family trauma and the desire to speak to a loved one who has passed on in a creative way, where this is often poorly executed in horror. Although this movie may struggle with pacing, the grainy aspects of the footage captured combined with the family trauma create such a haunting vibe that really stays with the viewer. The atmosphere is bleak and sad all the way through. The acting is excellent and the way Alice's character is portrayed is different from other ghost movies. Although it may be polarizing to different audiences, the film is original and stands out from the pack. The ghost of a former resident begins to haunt a mother and daughter in their New York City apartment building just as the two recently moved to the area and are in the midst of a custody battle.Haunted Water month rolls on as we discuss Dark Water, the remake of the 2002 Japanese ghost story, starring Jennifer Connelly and John C. Reilly. This movie has a lot going in including the challenges a mother and daughter experience in a custody battle compiled with their new apartment having a constant water leak, which is the work of a ghost. As far as atmosphere goes, this is a very mood film which plays well with the psychological impact the family, especially the mother, experiences while trying to raise a child at the conclusion of a sour relationship. The ghost story cycles a theme of abandonment and neglect which culminates into a twist we didn't see coming, but feels mixed at best. Although very well acted, this ghost story at times feels dull and doesn't fully bring everything together at the climax. In any case, it takes several swings, but misses on most. The film lacks the scares with cheesy pool ghosts, uneven acting performances, and large plot holes. The film had a very creepy trailer that brought a ton of intrigue to audiences and has an amazing cast of Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, and Amy Madigan, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. Mysterious, creepy, and full of well-developed characters and their various points of view, Weapons was an amazing ride and is a movie we'll continue to go back and watch. The Losers Club bands together to fight a shape-shifting entity that disguises itself primarily as a clown and feeds on children in the summer of 1989 in Derry, Maine. It, based off the classic Stephen King novel, depicts half of the story, focusing on the kids as they fight Pennywise who is feasting on children in Derry, Maine. This film fits perfectly into the Kids Aren't Alright month as the kids in Derry are going missing and the Losers Club discovers Pennywise is hungry for their fear. The kids in this rendition of the story portray the characters well and we believe the portion of the story where the kids fight Pennywise is the better half of the story vs when the adults come back to Derry in the future. Bill Skarsgard's performance and re-brand of the infamous Pennywise was amazing and as good as the iconic Tim Curry performance from the 1990 TV mini series. While the movie is well acted, the second and third acts leave a lot to be desired with plotlines either going nowhere or being disappointing. However, there are some very interesting kills as these kids have mind control abilities forcing the parents and townspeople to die in bizarre ways. While we were mixed on this movie, it was fun to see the differing power dynamics within a cult formed by children and how they all had different takes on the rules. Watching the young couple come into contact with the children was an interesting clash as they get to experience how far from the norm they've gone. It's the last episode in the current studio, and the crew showed up early — like 6 AM early — to send it off right. Joe somehow dragged himself in a week after having a baby, Russell made a rare appearance, and the whole gang got together one more time before the move. Things kicked off with Joe deep in his Black Instagram era, sharing everything from pineapple Kool-Aid trends to cartoon food culture, then somehow spiraling into a full debate about prom send-offs and whether a military tank is an appropriate way to send your kid to prom. From there the conversation went everywhere it had no business going — Drake's surprise triple album drop, the greatest rap albums of all time, the Michael Jackson biopic, MJ's allegations, Morgan Wallen saying the N-word, Chris Brown's ongoing controversies, Kanye's downfall, and the Kevin Hart roast. No topic was off limits and nobody held back. Classic Don't Be Sour energy from start to finish. The back half of the episode had the guys debating Pokémon games, GTA VI hype, what happened to Halo, and Joe's surprisingly detailed history of owning nine-foot pet pythons. They wrapped things up talking about My Fit Foods, meal prep, and what it actually feels like to get older, slow down on social media, and prioritize family. It was a good one. Gregory Peck stars in this film and he's one of a few strong performances in a movie that has bizarre characters, crazy events, and creepy deaths. You won't find a movie with a kid much creepier than the one in this film. The tone of the film is ominous and it certainly holds up. When this movie came out, there was a lot of hype surrounding how real it felt as a home invasion movie, primarily due to the lack of motive from the intruders. We're uncertain the movie holds up from a terror perspective, but it's certainly entertaining, suspenseful, and a unique entry into home invasion horror movies. With solid performances from Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman, and a fun cameo from Glenn Howerton, The Strangers is a fun ride that will make you want to pause going on any remote cabin trips. This film takes a loving family man's loyalty to his wife and kids to the brink as two young women drastically attempt to seduce and blackmail him. While this movie struggles with purpose and any sense of reality, it's a fun and wild movie to watch at least to see Reeves scream for most of the runtime. After rewatching the movie, we still love how tense the movie becomes and how it makes you question who's worse as things start to really take a turn. It's shot so well as the focus is on these young burglars who attempt to tiptoe quietly around the house initially while he's home, believing his lack of sight will make him unable to detect them. When push comes to shove, he's not the guy you want to mess with. It's a thrill ride all the way through with hardcore twists that make the film all the more worthwhile. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, this psychological horror stars Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, who owns a motel along with his mother. Without too much screen time and based on dialogue and reactions from Norman, mother is a controlling influence in his life. Her influence makes Norman the sinister presence he is thoughout the movie. Hitchcock tells an interesting story overlaying element of a heist with horror and conveys a timeless twist that highlights identity and the effects of trauma. This movie explores the challenges of navigating bullying, growing up, and finding friendship among the oddest of circumstances. While the movie deeply explores different character emotions, it has a bleak tone and cold atmosphere that really set the backdrop for what is a unique and challenging time in the lives of main characters, Oskar and Eli. The film has several absolutely jaw-dropping scenes and crazy twists, but at its core, it's a wholesome film of acceptance. As the single mother discovers that her neighbor's son also exhibited similar behavior changes as her son, she beings to suspect that her son may not actually be her son. A young girl finds herself trapped in her family's lake house while they're renovating and is haunted by a mysterious invader. In the fourth week of Staring into Holes month, we discuss Silent House, a psychological horror movie featuring Elizabeth Olsen in her first starring role. While this movie takes on the style of a continuous shot, it relies on acting and character developing to guide the narrative. Even though Olsen's performance is serviceable, there isn't enough happening in the movie to keep up the investment. The twist of the movie is highly predictable, especially if you've seen psychological horror films in the past, and profound character actions towards the end don't have the proper buildup. We've been critical of this movie in the past and there are too many holes references to count to leave it out of Staring into Holes month. When a young girl is chosen to be a sacrifice by a worshipped pit in her backwoods community, she fights to survive even at the expense of those around her.Staring into Holes month continues with indie heater, Jug Face. This movie tells the unique story of a backwoods community that worships a pit in a forest. Sometimes when wrongdoing is amidst, the pit will call for a sacrifice, which is the case for the protagonist, Ada. Her struggle for survival after being a chosen sacrifice by the supernatural force causes significant harm to her community. This is a bizarre film that we've seen before and although we're mixed on this movie, it's certainly interesting and paints a picture of what a modern yet uncivilized community looks like; especially when a young girl is facing challenges when growing up and learning more about her world. After a breakup and drowning out his sorrows outside of a rest stop, Wes finds himself locked inside a bathroom stall and in an otherworldly encounter with a mysterious entity in the neighboring stall. Staring into Holes month kicks off with Glorious, a cosmic, mystery horror film that takes place in a rest stop bathroom. This movie stars Ryan Kwanten who plays, Wes, who's feeling down after a breakup and finds himself locked in a bathroom stall. The film's strengths lie in the odd conversations he has through a glory hole with a mysterious entity in the adjacent bathroom stall, played by J.K. Simmons. The two leads have great dialogue, which keep up the mystery and add to the twists in the third act that really make this an entertaining film. This movie is often remembered for one very disturbing scene in the middle of the film, but the impact is felt both in the beginning and the end. This movie is a loose remake of House of Wax from 1953 and that movie is a remake of Mystery of the Wax Museum from 1933. As a movie that often gets some hate, we've always said it's one of the more underrated horror movies from the 2000s with a fun cast of Chad Michael Murray, Elisha Cuthbert, Jared Padalecki, Paris Hilton, and Robert Ri'chard. While it has some plot holes, it really delivers on everything 2000s horror had to offer and never ceases to entertain us. It offers up the intriguing premise of what a young high school teenager would be willing to give up and how far they would go to have their wishes granted, with some unexpected turns. A group of friends start receiving voicemails from their future selves just moments prior to their deaths and then they start to die one after another.One Missed Call is the remake of a 2003 Japanese horror movie from director Takashi Miike and after watching this movie again, we come to the same conclusion. This movie has an interesting concept, but poor execution with a convoluted storyline, plots that lead nowhere, characters that are either developed badly or don't serve a purpose, and cringeworthy CGI. Multiple viewings of this movie haven't changed our opinion over the years and while it has a similar feel to movies like Final Destination, The Ring, and Feardotcom where there's a countdown to death, this film fails to deliver on an interesting premise. Two high school friends crash a Y2K party in the hopes of getting laid, but as midnight arrives, the night takes another direction in the form of a computer assimilation plot.Y2K is a late 90s nostalgia trip, bringing us back to when we remember hearing about a technological apocalypse in the new millennium. This film explores the idea of computers taking humans over, leaving it up to high school kids at a party to save each other. This movie features coming-of-age elements as well as silly jokes with nostalgia often being forced in just in case anyone forgot when the movie was taking place. While we had mixed feelings about this one, it's definitely a movie that captured our generation and a conspiracy we lived through.
