A group of friends start receiving voicemails from their future selves just moments prior to their deaths and then they start to die one after another. One Missed Call is the remake of a 2003 Japanese horror movie from director Takashi Miike and after watching this movie again, we come to the same conclusion. This movie has an interesting concept, but poor execution with a convoluted storyline, plots that lead nowhere, characters that are either developed badly or don't serve a purpose, and cringeworthy CGI. Multiple viewings of this movie haven't changed our opinion over the years and while it has a similar feel to movies like Final Destination, The Ring, and Feardotcom where there's a countdown to death, this film fails to deliver on an interesting premise. Two high school friends crash a Y2K party in the hopes of getting laid, but as midnight arrives, the night takes another direction in the form of a computer assimilation plot.Y2K is a late 90s nostalgia trip, bringing us back to when we remember hearing about a technological apocalypse in the new millennium. This film explores the idea of computers taking humans over, leaving it up to high school kids at a party to save each other. This movie features coming-of-age elements as well as silly jokes with nostalgia often being forced in just in case anyone forgot when the movie was taking place. While we had mixed feelings about this one, it's definitely a movie that captured our generation and a conspiracy we lived through. The acting is great in this movie especially from Riley Keough, who plays Grace, a lone death cult survivor, who is trying to rebuild her life, but dealing with the lasting impact of her past. Red Christmas is not only a holiday horror movie, but it also has one of the weirdest, most insane slasher backstories we've ever heard of. In this movie, a cloaked man stalks a family during Christmas, however, the storyline is that he is an abortion survivor come back for the love of his mother. Killer toys, programmed by an older toymaker who works along with his son, are designed to kill children.Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker may be even more bizarre to watch than the last Silent, Deadly Night movie if it's possible. In a series with little to no continuity or identify, this installment features a drunken, elderly toymaker making toys programmed to kill children. A young boy appears to be the next target after the boy's father dies mysteriously from a toy left at their doorstep, and the event renders the boy mute. This movie is very fun to watch and has so many crazy storylines converging that are hard to make sense of. It all leads up to a few twists towards the end of the movie that are absolutely insane. After the arrival of strange creatures who use their strong hearing to hunt, a family fights to stay alive by living their lives in silence. A Quiet Place is directed by John Kraskinsi, who also stars in the film alongside Emily Blunt. While not his directorial debut, it's Krasinski's first horror movie and he makes an impact on the genre immediately. In what many, including us, believe is a modern day classic, Krasinski paints a sad world where a loving family is forced to live a silent existence in order to stay alive. This movie has so much going for it with excellent character development, interesting creatures, a theme of guilt that leads to an excellent conclusion, tense moments, and unique storytelling. The film doesn't overstay its welcome and while nobody expected something like this from Krasinski, it delivers in every way. YouTube | The Final PodcastDiscord | Spooky PiratesFacebook | The Final PodcastInstagram | thefinalpodcastMusic Credit: Karl Casey @ White Bat AudioWhat should we review next? Where the original was successful in not only creating great characters with motives, a claustrophobic environment, and creepy subterranean creatures, the sequel does the opposite on almost all of these things. The monsters are back, but there are so many of them fighting the characters throughout the movie, any and all tenseness is minimal. The characters have forced motives and there's a few twists that had us shaking our heads. This effort was one final hoorah to boost the ratings of the show which consistently loses to Carson. Can Jack Delroy's 'Night Owls' finally have the best night of tv in history? A flawed man attempts to renovate a home for his growing family that is worse for wear, but this house has a history that it can't forget or forgive.Girl on the Third Floor stars CM Punk, a wrestler that we've loved for years and were so excited to hear that he was the main event in a horror movie! This film had an interest idea and featured some heavy themes, but do they deliver? Can "The Best in the World" help deliver a memorable performance? It's not going to be easy with a movie's script that features a haunted house that cums everywhere. Yes, the house 1000% cums. We can't make this up. Devout Irish villagers in a North American settlement are ravaged by disease while a woman and her daughter are thriving amidst suspicion of witchcraft. The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw starts off with a bang with a mysterious witch coven's use of a young girl to remain prosperous during a harvest, while a local village is struggling. The movie does teeter and starts to lose cohesiveness with the backstory of the witch, her capabilities, and the lack of self-awareness for her purpose. The time period and character actions as it relates to the specific time the film is set is also confusing. With some strengths, the movie was better than expected, but with a lacking ending, the film doesn't set itself apart from the rest of the genre.Subscribe to our YouTube channel @thefinalpodcast  Join the Discord | https://discord.gg/UFtVP243Follow us on Facebook The Final Podcast Follow us on Instagram @thefinalpodcastFollow us on X @thefinalpodeverMusic Credit: Karl Casey @ White Bat Audiohttps://www.youtube.com/whitebataudioWhat should we review next? After witnessing a murder, a high school photographer believes the teachers at his school have been taken over by aliens and he investigates the odd phenomena sweeping over his school. The Faculty is a 90s scifi horror movie like no other, paying homage to so many films before it. It features an amazing cast of breakout stars, and it's directed by Robert Rodriguez. It truly feels like The Thing meets The Breakfast Club as a sci-fi mystery that stars Elijah Wood, Josh Harnett, Jordana Brewster, Clea Duvall, Robert Patrick, Famke Janssen, Piper Laurie, Usher, Salma Hayek, and Christopher McDonald to name a few. It's a cult classic that pits an unlikely band of high school teens, meeting all the stereotypes, against the teachers who are in charge and play host to a parasitic alien race. An FBI agent with an odd connection to a serial killer discovers cryptic clues to a pattern of murders that hits close to him.Longlegs is successful in blending a true crime vibe with the occult and is overshadowed by the creepy and unsettling performance of Nicolas Cage. The film had great marketing efforts to really build up tension and create that ominous mystery that leaves the viewer haunted by the presence and evil depicted by the murders in the movie. Maika Monroe has a standout performance in her effort as the FBI agent assigned to the murders that are spanning through decades. While Longlegs is a movie that will work for some, it may not land the same way for others, but certainly was shot and acted very well. A deaf and mute author, living in isolation, is visited at night by a masked predator threatening her life. Hush takes home invasion horror to new heights by pitting a masked killer up against a writer who is living in the woods alone and doesn't have the ability to hear or speak. Mike Flanagan, who has made a name for himself with several successful horror movies and tv shows, creates a tense atmosphere in this movie that continues to build over the duration of the film. What appears to be a hopeless situation is countered by the protagonist's inability to give up and be a worthy adversary. After being turned down by Brent to go to prom, Lola decides to throw a prom of her own.The Loved Ones is an excellent movie that is both brutal and comedic and it continues to get more sadistic as the film goes on. It focuses on themes of loneliness, acceptance, and grief and ties up all loose ends by the end for a full depiction of the character motivations. The movie also tosses in a few twists that make the movie such a fun watch. The Loved Ones was a surprise and one that we've gone back to a few times to rewatch. A grieving mother-daughter relationship takes a turn for the worst, when young Leah performs a ritual in the woods to murder her mother.Pyewacket is a folk horror film that explores a family experiencing tragedy and a mother and daughter finding ways to cope and live with each other. While this movie covers the extreme ways of a young rebellious teenage girl copes with grief, the film does a good job of exploring grief and regret using folk horror as the genre. Many of the actions in the movie are quick, completely avoidable, and rash, but that's what makes it work as a coming-of-age movie. Charlie suspects his new neighbor of being a vampire and turns to an unlikely source for help in the form of a washed-up actor who portrays a vampire hunter on a television show.Fright Night is the finale of Retro Reel 2025 as it should. This movie is always a joy to watch from the memorable set of characters to the tense dialogue, it constantly picks up the pace. We were particularly impressed with the performances of Chris Sarandon as Jerry Dandrige and Roddy McDowall as Peter Vincent. While keeping some old vampire tropes, this film does add original elements and the portrayal of the vampires is hideous in the most amazing way possible. With great practical effects, excellent soundtrack, and an engaging story, Fright Night is a super fun experience. The legend in the small, coastal town of Antonio Bay is of a ship lured to the land and swallowed up by a mysterious thick cloud as it sank. The locals say when the fog returns, the dead will arise from their watery graves. The Fog, directed by John Carpenter, fits quite nicely into Retro Reel 2025. It stars horror greats such as Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, and Hal Holbrook and like most Carpenter films, features an electric soundtrack. The film gives off eerie vibes and has multiple character stories that are bridged together quite nicely as the secrets of Antonio Bay are revealed throughout the movie. While the film is not without its flaws, it's fun to watch a mystery, ghost story, and revenge plot all wrapped into one. Sheriff Dan Gillis investigates a series of murders and odd events in the small coastal town of Potter's Bluff.Retro Reel returns with a movie like no other. There's something about small town murder mysteries that are always interesting. Now just add horror and supernatural elements to that and you get Dead & Buried, a movie that doesn't get the appreciation it deserves. It fully captures that creepy small town feel as characters start dropping dead in the strangest circumstances and it seems like the sheriff is the only person trying to uncover the truth behind the murders.
