In this episode the FM3 tackle one of the most infamous horror films ever, Jörg Buttgereit's NEKROMANTIK! The lore behind this 1987 gorefest is the stuff of legend. Trying to track down an actual copy back in the 90's was a fruitless quest for so many curious gross-out nerds. Banned in many countries even to this day, you could say that watching NEKROMANTIK is much like getting a receiving a medal for bravery. It is not for the faint of heart and has many trigger warnings such as real animal murder, fake animal murder, suicide, and as you can imagine everything you might do to a corpse if you were a ghoul. So folks that have not feasted their eyes on this gag inducing film may want to go in cautiously and Jef, Josh and Brian suggest eating before you hit play. Godspeed and don't forget your barf bag! We're breaking from the usual LP format of our commentary episodes to bring you a discussion of a label compilation, specifically the first volume of Nightbreed's infamous "Gothic Sounds" samplers. We're using tunes from the likes of Suspiria, Nekromantik, and Faithful Dawn as an opportunity to discuss the ins and outs of mid 90s UK goth, and specifically the tantalizing electrogoth sound which has always been closely tied to Nightbreed.
Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Don't Go in the House (1979), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981) In 1984, in the U.K., the Video Recording Act was passed, which required certification of all video releases by the British Board of Film Classification, aka BBFC. This all came about due to a list of video titles that a group of various religious and other social groups run by the likes of Mary Whitehouse, deemed unsuitable to be viewed and thought for sure it would help corrupt the youth of England. The initial list had 72 titles on it, both films that had already been released after obtaining a BBFC certificate but now was deemed too offensive, as well as a whole bunch of other titles that were believed to fall under the obscenity law. If you own a shop that rented or sold one of these titles, you could be shut down, fined, and possibly even go to jail for it. And this all took place, not in the dark ages, but in the mid 1980s. Hard to believe it, especially growing up here in the U.S. Some of those titles have only recently gotten passed and released over in the U.K., even 40 years later. Blows the mind. In this episode, we discuss not only the whole Video Nasty era, but cover 3 films from that list, with each of us watching all 3 and see if we made it through without turning us into mindless deviants. Never one to take the easy choices, supporter and friend of the show Spider-Dan has chosen a sequel by German Director Jörg Buttgereit, in Nekromantic 2. Buttgereit, building on the underground success of the first Nekromantik film, aimed to create a sequel that delved deeper into themes of love, death, and societal taboos. Shot on a modest budget with a crew of close collaborators, the film maintained its predecessor's grim aesthetic while incorporating more surreal and darkly comedic elements. The production faced logistical challenges due to its provocative subject matter, with limited resources and a reliance on guerrilla filmmaking techniques. Despite these constraints, the team crafted a visually striking and unsettling film, cementing Buttgereit's reputation in the underground horror scene. The film's release was equally fraught, as Nekromantik 2 faced immediate backlash from censors in Germany. Since March of 2024 Death By DVD has been covering a movie called LEFT ONE ALIVE, written and directed by David Axe, shot and edited by Sarah Massey.
