Despite the nonsense that pervades the mainstream media… renewable energy isn't saving the planet anytime soon. If you believe it will, I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. There's a lot of debate surrounding the use of fossil fuels, with many calling it immoral due to the impact on the environment. Last week in London, the World Nuclear Association (WNA) released its 2019 Nuclear Fuel Report, which forecasts nuclear power generation growth. And for the first time in the Fukushima disaster in 2011, the WNA raised its long-term global growth outlook. But demand is just one side of the equation... For nearly a decade, the world has been awash in uranium supplies. Today, Tim Chilleri, analyst at Sachem Cove Partners, joins me on the podcast. We just returned from the 2019 WNA Symposium in London. Find out what we learned from our travels... ------------------ Editor's note: Mike Alkin is a very cautious investor. With the Section 232 decision on uranium behind us… the uranium market's fundamentals look strong. Primary supply cuts are taking hold… secondary supplies are receding… and commercial utility inventories are within normal levels. So why aren't equity prices reflecting these fundamentals? As a short seller, I always enjoy looking at the mining sector. It's a great place to find some overhyped bullsh*t. To hear some mining executives tell it, they have THE PROJECT that will pave the way to riches for investors… If there's a sector that requires due diligence and a skeptical eye, mining is it. After 18 months (that felt like dog years), President Trump finally ruled on the Section 232 petition on U.S. uranium imports. The president had wide latitude on his ruling… He could have chosen the Department of Commerce's recommendations, come up with his own solution, or opted to do nothing at all. The petitioners were hoping for a 25% quota… But the commander in chief rejected the petition—against the recommendation of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. As is often the case, the headlines don't depict the whole story. Rather than imposing restrictive quotas, the president commissioned a working group to conduct a thorough review of the whole nuclear fuel cycle… The group's findings could have many implications for the uranium market. Arthur Hyde, a partner at Segra Resource Partners uranium fund, joins me today to discuss the implications of the Section 232 ruling and our thoughts on the working group [10:57]. ------------------------ Editor's note: If you don't have exposure to the energy sector… Mike recently recommended two of his favorite plays in his signature newsletter Moneyflow Trader. In this hedge fund manager's search for stupid-cheap stocks, no destination is too far flung. Rather than get caught up in the same noise of the same market as everyone else, Harris “Kuppy” Kupperman sets his sights on companies and industries the world over—looking for the unloved… the ignored… and the misunderstood. Finding hidden value in the equity markets isn't easy. Most sectors are fairly valued... most of the markets are efficient... and most stock prices reflect that. The keyword here is “most.” Because if you know what to look for (and where)... you'd be amazed at what you can find. You just need a sound process for evaluating companies and sectors. My guest on today's episode is Jason Gould, portfolio manager at Lifetime Wealth Management. Jason loves to scour to market's underbelly to find asymmetrical risk/reward setups and stupid cheap stocks [9:50]. Right this minute, the 20,000 U.S. hedge and mutual funds are scouring through the 5,000 publicly listed U.S. companies… trying to find their prince. Between all these analysts and portfolio managers, probably a few hundred thousand eyeballs have already combed through every line item of every report of every single one of these companies. Which means your chances of finding a diamond in the rough are slim. If you want to find a great investment… you need to go where no one else is looking. You probably haven't built a power plant… But our guest has! John Polomny has an abiding passion for all things energy related. And while being part of a team that builds power plants doesn't automatically make one an expert in the business of investing in the sector… he's done the requisite work. John's knowledge of the energy sector has translated into a knack for identifying out-of-favor, mispriced industries—like uranium, for example. Listen and learn how John educated himself on energy investing, the folks he followed on his journey, and the industries he thinks offer great value [26:52]. -------------- P.S. Have you seen the viral video where the cute 4-year-old is mic'd up for his hockey practice? His dad wondered what he might be saying out there on the ice… and it's gotten over nine million views in three months. That dad is Jeremy Rupke, founder of How to Hockey. Hailing from a small Canadian farming town, Jeremy's story offers a peek into the mind of a young entrepreneur who took hockey to a different level, turning his lifelong passion for a sport into a rapidly growing business of educating players of all ages. You're in for a treat with this interview [27:34]. Hockey and business/investing are naturally linked in my mind… If you're a regular listener, you may have heard me quote Wayne Gretzky: Skate to where the puck is going—not where it is. I try to use that approach in investing. The obvious details about a company or industry are priced into where the stock is trading at any given time… That's where the puck is. Where it's going is second level type thinking… That's the information that'll be priced into the stock in the future—when the market figures it out. ------------------------------------- The Mike Alkin Show is available at: --iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-mike-alkin-show-talking-stocks-over-a-beer/id1350956784?mt=2 --Stitcher : https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/curzio-research/the-mike-alkin-show --Website : https://www.curzioresearch.com/category/podcast/mike-alkin-show/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/footnotesfirst Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CurzioResearch/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-alkin-43b67324/ Website: https://www.curzioresearch.com ------------------------------------- Links mentioned in this episode: Cute 4-year-old is mic'd up for his hockey practice How to Hockey
Chris MacIntosh is founder and author of Capitalist Exploits. He's about as contrarian as you can get… always calling it like it is, without any B.S. He shares what you should be buying—and avoiding—to make asymmetrical returns [20:17]. Remember, what gets you the most bang for your buck isn't always the popular pick…
I often talk about the art and science of investing. After all, a lot goes into analyzing companies, industries, and the markets. The good news is you don't have to be an MBA or CFA to be a good investor! You just need to be curious… put in the time… and have a strong grasp of fourth grade math. But where do you begin? I share some of my favorite investing books to inspire you and point you in the right direction… And you don't want to miss my Big Salad experience in the opening sequence.
You may not think what's going on in the rest of the world matters to your portfolio… but it does. And insular thinking is an Achilles heel for many investors… My guest today is Angel Martin Oro, editor of Spanish investing website inBestia.com [10:13]. Pull up a stool as Angel shares his knowledge of the Spanish economy, the professional investor landscape, and his views on investing opportunities within his own country—and beyond.
I've talked before about the role geopolitics should play in your investing framework. It's absolutely critical that we pay attention to the world around us. For example… Right now, investors should have their eye on the high stakes poker game between Russia and Venezuela. Is the U.S. prepared to ante up? My guest today is Tim Rotolo, founder and CEO of Lloyd Harbor Capital Management [29:24]. Tim sheds light on what institutional capital allocators look for in an investment—and how these money flows drive markets. And… the yield curve inverted last week. If you don't know what that means for your portfolio… I'll tell you. --------- Editor's note: You might've heard Mike mention his Moneyflow Trader investment advisory on the show. These aren't first-level, obvious ideas... Mike dives deep and zooms in on what the “experts” are missing… giving members fantastic risk/reward setups. Elon Musk is the much ballyhooed would-be-savior of the planet. He's created a cult-like following through his efforts to bring electric vehicles to the masses. These Teslemmings would walk to the ends of the earth for him… Good thing the Earth isn't flat. If it were, they'd be heading right over a cliff. Today, professional investor Ed McCabe joins me in dissecting some of the challenges Tesla and Musk face right now. Supply… Demand… Financial… Legal… It isn't pretty.
This is the best risk/reward setup I've ever seen in my investing career… And nothing is a close second. Technical factors involving geopolitics and an ETF rebalancing have masked dramatically improved fundamentals in the uranium and nuclear power industries… And the market is asleep at the switch. That means you can still get up to speed and prepare for the uranium bull market. My guests today are Bannerman Resources CEO Brandon Munro and 50-year nuclear engineering veteran Malcolm Rawlingson. Join us as we dissect nuclear power demand… primary and secondary supply… enrichment/underfeeding… and the role China and Russia play in the nuclear fuel cycle.
My guest today is former chief audit executive, Brent Brickman. Brent takes us on a behind-the-scenes risk management journey… Companies put out financial statements... and investors take them as gospel. If it were only that simple... Those pages are made up of the moving parts of a company. A proper reporting of them requires sound internal controls. Enter the internal auditor. If you haven't given much consideration to the role of an internal auditor before, today you'll learn just how critical they are for a company to run well—and their role in helping create reliable financial statements. Brent explains what a company needs to efficiently and legally run its business—and the damage improper or weak controls can do to stakeholders.
Just as art imitates life… football imitates leadership and investing. Even if you've never played the game… even if you're not a fan… there are valuable lessons to be learned. Today's guest is Angus Reid, 13-year Canadian Football League (CFL) pro and two-time Grey Cup champion [21:33]. He's also the author of Thank You Coach, which details the lessons he learned playing for mentor and coach, Dan Dorazio. Checklists… preparation… learning in reverse… staying calm under pressure… These are just a few of the topics we explore to help you become a better leader... and investor.
Management teams tell the story they want you to know… not the one you need to know. Sometimes they're one and the same. Other times… not so much. It can be tricky to know what stories to believe… and which ones don't add up. After all, they all sound good. Wall Street is chock full of rosy projections and eternal optimists, but my guest today is a professional skeptic: Robert MacArthur of Alternative Research [30:50]. Rob is also a professional short seller with three decades of experience. Pull up a stool as he shares some insights on sorting the winners from the losers.
Nuclear power has had a bad rap for 50 years… Talk about believing myth over reality. My guest today is world renowned nuclear advocate Michael Shellenberger [10:46]. For years Michael campaigned against nuclear power, espousing the virtues of renewables like wind and solar… But then—after much study and a hard look at the facts—he changed his mind. And the rest is history. Listen and learn from the world's foremost speaker on nuclear power. Click below to listen.
I've got a special treat for you this Valentine's Day… In the uranium and nuclear power world, all eyes are on the outcome of Section 232. The recommendation to the president by the U.S. Department of Commerce is expected by mid-April… and could have broad implications for the industry. Today I'm talking with Jeff Klenda, CEO of UR-Energy—one of the two petitioning uranium mining companies. Jeff is his usual refreshing and unfiltered self as he shares an insider's overview and perspective of 232.
In the late 19th century, accountants wore green eye shades. Their attention to detail was so acute… and the shades lessened eye strain against candles and early incandescent lights. But today's government bean counters shouldn't trouble themselves with details while reviewing a copy of the Green New Deal, the proposed environmental legislation co-authored by NY congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. I mean, why let details like how to pay for it get in the way? The socialist left doesn't seem to. On today's show I tell you exactly what this plan calls for—and exactly what I think of it. Oh, how the Democratic Party has changed since I was a kid. Speaking of change, today's guest is none other than Frank Curzio himself [25:19]. Frank is looking to change the newsletter business. Today he shares why this industry needs fixing... what he's doing about it… and how you can invest in it.
I'm a fundamental analyst. Numbers speak to me. But that's just one way to invest. Sometimes the numbers don't tell the whole story… That's when pictures help. My guest today is David Keller, former chief technical strategist for Fidelity Investments and founder of Sierra Alpha Research. David has charted the price movements of thousands of stocks over his career. For him, stock charts are a window into the behavior of the crowd. More than just an historical representation of where a stock has come from… a chart gives off signals about where a stock could be headed. Join us [33:14] as we talk behavioral finance and how investor emotions work their way into stock prices.
Geopolitics aren't just for news junkies or history buffs. Investors must take a global view. Russia is less oil-dependent… China is returning to its long-term strategic thinking… and the Brits are struggling with Brexit… In a vacuum—and without the proper mental framework—none of this might seem to matter for your portfolio. But I want to share some insights with you today that may change your perspective. Speaking of frameworks… Natural resource investing can be incredibly profitable… or an unmitigated disaster. Today I welcome back mining engineer and venture capitalist Jamie Keech of Resource Insider, who walks us through his insightful approach to resource investing. A framework for analyzing these stocks is critical… And today's show is a must-listen for any resource investor.
I've just left the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference (VRIC) and am making my way back home. On today's podcast I give a recap of the event and share my reactions to the speakers… I also break down how to protect yourself from the inevitable noise that comes any time a group of “experts” get together. But forgive me if I sound a bit cranky… You see, every year the terrific hosts invite me to speak at their fantastic conference… on Championship Sunday. Four NFL teams, two epic games to determine this year's Super Bowl matchup, and I missed every second of it. Not to sound ungrateful… but would the Canadians schedule a conference during Game 7 of the Stanley Cup?
Uranium fundamentals have been improving dramatically for over a year… kind of like my New York Islanders. The Islanders have improved markedly—their defense has gone from the bottom of the league to near the top. And with uranium, we're about to witness a quantum leap that will make investors finally take note. Last month, fellow uranium fund manager Arthur Hyde from Segra Capital and I talked about mispricings in the uranium industry. Join us this week for part two of our talk about this potentially explosive market.
Happy New Year! Before we took a break for the holidays, I interviewed my buddy Arthur Hyde, a uranium hedge fund manager at Segra Capital, and promised that it was part one of a two-part series. You can listen to the first episode here, where he and I begin our deep dive into the world of uranium and the fundamental drivers behind the market. Unfortunately, Art is down with the flu today… but I'll have part two for you next week. In the meantime, I revisited some lessons I've learned in my first year as a podcast host. (If you're a regular listener… and especially if you subscribe to my Moneyflow Trader investment advisory… you know I always take learnings and try to improve upon them.) On today's show I talk about the importance of having an investing framework… what mine is… and the critical role geopolitics play in it. Don't think I let you off the monologue hook… I share my predictions on the upcoming NFL playoffs—as well as tonight's national championship college football battle between Clemson and Alabama (Roll Tide!). And the Islanders are on fire...
Rarely do you see a decoupling of industry fundamentals from stock prices—but we're seeing it in the world of uranium right now. Massive supply deficits will require a significant rise in the price of the underlying commodity to incentivize new production required to meet growing nuclear power demand… But the aftereffects of a seven-year-long bear market in uranium are lingering as the overall equity markets get hit. And although positive newsflow for the uranium industry keeps coming… Stock prices haven't caught up. My guest today is fellow uranium hedge fund manager—and my buddy—Arthur Hyde of Segra Capital Management. Grab your beverage of choice and join Art and me for part one of a two-part interview—as we dive deep into the world of uranium and the fundamental drivers behind the market. And bring a pen… You'll want to take lots of notes.
The show must go on… Unless you fall off a 10-foot ladder while hanging Christmas lights. And then get the flu. Yep, I had the double whammy last week. But a good thing about being laid up in bed is I had plenty of quiet time to think. (See… I'm not always a contrarian!) Market volatility is high—and it's coming from many different fronts: slowing growth fears… trade wars… escalating Brexit uncertainty… growing unrest in France… just to name a few. The first step to easing uncertainty in a volatile market is to become intimately familiar with your own portfolio... I also knew there must be something of value that's being overlooked amid the chaos. And sure enough, I found one sector that's worthy of more investigation.
Investing in out-of-favor stocks can give you a big rebel thrill… and you don't even have to hop on a Harley… Blown up… left for dead… on the trash pile… you name it… Abandoned stocks are worth a look. If you can find asymmetry in the risk/reward, the wait can be well worth it. But making a contrarian trade just for the sake of doing so can be about as hazardous as a fast bike… Doing so when you have math—and patience—on your side can be a quite lucrative adventure. My guest today is Andrew Weekly, senior analyst and editor of SmithWeekly International. Join us to learn some of his favorite ideas… and his methodology to find value. (Leather jacket optional.)
My guest today has been in the nuclear power industry for 30 years. She's forgotten more about nuclear than most people will ever know. Andrea Jennetta is publisher of Fuel Cycle Week. Over the last couple of years our views on the uranium cycle have diverged. But we finally had a chance to meet face to face at the Nuclear Energy Institute conference in Boston earlier this month… Today we pick up on that conversation. And discover just how much you can learn from two different approaches to a market...
Jacob leegard went from professional poker player to full-time deep-value contrarian investor. It's not such a stretch… The contrarian approach requires a great deal of patience and risk/reward assessment… And when you're buying what everyone else is ignoring, you can only play your best hand… That means knowing how to spot the greatest opportunities for high profits with limited downside. Join us today as we talk about the market's trash pile—and the joys of scavenging through it. By the way… I'm throwing in the towel on my NY Jets. I'm not that much of a masochist.
Everyone loves a good story… but the problem with buying a story is the facts sometimes get in the way. Today I talk about why numbers matter… and the ones to pay attention to. U.S. midterm elections are tomorrow. The results could lead to market fireworks —or not… If you weren't prepared for last month's market bloodbath, it's time to start learning what to look for... and how to position yourself going forward. Preparation matters—a lot. I also get into nuclear power and break down some figures for you… And the Islanders are in first place! Who cares if the season just started?
I'm coming to you from the Nuclear Energy Institute's Fuel Conference (NEI) in Boston. Today I'll share a sample of my presentation, The Uranium Cycle Has Turned While Hiding in Plain Sight. And you know, it's a funny thing about the market—it doesn't care what you've done… only what you're going to do. GDP growth is strong… third-quarter earnings are coming in +22%... but the market is getting smoked. It's pricing in the potential negative implications from Chinese tariffs, rising interest rates, rising input costs, difficulty raising prices, and a strong dollar… So how are professional allocators thinking about the market uncertainty? My guest, former NFL linebacker-turned-businessman Chad Cascadden, talks to them regularly… and shares his take.
Asymmetry in stocks exists where most aren't looking… And the value one finds on the trash heap can be quite exceptional. No one subscribes to this view more than my guest today, Chris MacIntosh, founder and editor of Capitalist Exploits… It's exactly how I think, too. Chris scours the market's discard pile looking for deep value—and he shares some insight for those of you who'd like to try it yourselves. It's a hard job… Most of what's in the pile actually belongs there. But oh, man, when you find a buried treasure… the returns can be spectacular.
We're now in earnings season, which always brings its share of surprises… If that weren't enough, it's a hairy geopolitical landscape out there… There's the U.S. tiff with China—and I'm not talking about tariffs. There's also the drama unfolding in Saudi Arabia. These and other world events can have big implications for your portfolio. So on today's show, we'll talk about why it's critical to look beyond the obvious… and how to position your investments for hidden dangers. Topics discussed: The Jets: could winning football be back in NY? Drew Brees (the real GOAT) China… there's a lot more than a trade war going on Saudi Arabia: problems brewing in the Kingdom over missing journalist Earnings… what I'm paying attention to this week
The subject of nuclear power can stir up quite a bit of emotion... and the same goes for its feedstock, uranium. Some investors love it. Some investors hate it. But Australian uranium developer Vimy Resources fully intends to play a role in the future of nuclear power… My guest today is Vimy CEO Mike Young. Join us for an on-point discussion about what's in store for the macro uranium market. Topics discussed: Complications in the uranium market Understanding spot pricing Supply and demand dynamics Mulga Rock (Vimy's project in Australia)
The bears love him… The bulls can't stand him… But regardless of what side you're on… it's always worth listening to Mark Spiegel's latest views on Tesla. Mark is the founder of Stanphyl Capital hedge fund—known for his exhaustive analyses on both the long and short side. And he's an outspoken critic of Tesla. Today, Mark shares his views on Elon Musk's SEC settlement, Tesla's just-announced third-quarter production and delivery numbers, and what's not included in the release. Topics discussed: Musk settles… So what? Production numbers—It's the demand, stupid An onslaught of competition The bull case… is there one?
In the world of distressed investing, blood in the streets often spells opportunity… This is a potentially lucrative—though often misunderstood—corner of the markets. My guest today is Neil Weiner, founder and chief investment officer of Foxhill Capital Management. Neil manages a hedge fund focused on sniffing out opportunities in the world of bonds, credit, and equities that most investors ignore. He gets his cues away from the noise of Main Street… Join me to learn how he does it.
When markets are opaque and underfollowed… misinformation occurs. When those same markets have been in a bear market for years… any changes that might be brewing beneath the surface often get overlooked—if not completely ignored. This is what's happening in the uranium market right now. My guest is Rob Chang, board member of UR Energy & Fission Uranium—two high profile uranium companies. Today we dig into the fundamentals that could lead to rising uranium prices… and big gains in uranium miner equities. It's a perfect setup for this necessary and ridiculously cheap commodity. Note: After working as a uranium analyst for 13 years, Rob recently took the role of CFO at Riot Blockchain. Today he and I briefly discuss blockchain and why he's so impressed with distributed ledger technology. If you're interested in blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and the best assets to buy now… click here to learn more about Crypto Intelligence—a new service here at Curzio Research.
The markets move around based on a lot more than what's happening in our own backyard. Geopolitics… and country-specific attitudes and policies… shape what happens in the investing world. Specifically, these factors shape what's in your portfolio. And no one knows that better than today's guest, former proprietary trader and hedge fund manager Steve Koomar. Steve is publisher and editor of Vigilante Investor… He's also a geo-political junkie. Join us today for a deep discussion outlining some key geopolitical items you should be thinking about right now.
Subtlety matters a lot in investing. Knowing what to look for—and learning how to spot it—can help you strategically position your portfolio for market changes. Frank Curzio, CEO of Curzio Research, joins me today to talk about the changes he's seeing in the market… changes that are leading him to take a more cautious investment stance. And let me tell you... it's been a while since he's felt this way. Frank shares the cues he's taking from the most recent earnings season… and he highlights what this could mean for your portfolio. Topics discussed The latest earnings season and what the numbers indicate A strong dollar's impact on companies' bottom lines Inflation… finally! Portfolio positioning for a potential downturn How to navigate the frontier market of cryptocurrencies
My guest today is Bill Fleckenstein, founder of Fleckenstein Capital. Bill closed his short fund in 2009… near the bottom of the roaring bull market. He seemed to be following the market wisdom of one of my former bosses, the legendary Marty Zweig. Marty famously said, “Don't fight the Fed,” in reference to the Federal Reserve's stance on the direction of short-term interest rates… But this bear hasn't been in hibernation. Since 2009, Bill has been following closely—and opining daily on—the meteoric rise of central bank-fueled asset prices… And he thinks the market is due for a correction.
