Can meat production build soil, revitalize ecosystems, improve our health, and taste amazing? Absolutely! This is a meaty episode (pun-intended) packed with intriguing stories from mean-industry disrupter and former vegetarian Glen Burrows of https://ethicalbutcher.co.uk/ (The Ethical Butcher). We discuss how identity and belonging are often attached to dietary choices. Glen talks about his transition from an “absolutist”, dogmatic mindset into a more nuanced approach to understanding the food system. Next, we explore the divorce of livestock from crop production in conventional agriculture and how regenerative farms aim to reconnect these ecological links. Glen explains a bit about the food scene in the UK and tells us an incredible story of his visit to a chemically-intensive conventional farm with dead lifeless sand-like soil directly adjacent to a regenerative ranch with soil like “cool wet chocolate cake”. He compares the “craft beer” and “single origin coffee” scene to his vision of a new trend for regional “terroir” in regenerative meat. He discusses how generic meat products vs “craft” products are differentiated by the care and ethics used to produce those animals and tend that land. #craftmeatrevolution anyone? Glen digs into the difference between “grass fed” and “pasture fed” is the diversity of plants being consumed by the animal. Lastly, we explore Glen's surprising vision for hope in the food system and healing the Earth and our bodies in conjunction. The Ethical Butcher is on a mission to reconnect people with nature through the highest quality, ethically-sourced meats. This brand is so unique because much of the business is owned by farmers who needed a better route to market for their rare-breed, 100% pasture-raised, regeneratively-raised meat. Just like modern agriculture tries to put chemical “bandaids” on ecological disruptions, modern medicine often seeks to treat the symptoms of health problems. Naturopathic doctors, on the other hand, are focused on root cause solutions. We had the fortune of speaking with Dr. Steph Poiani, a specialist in natural healing of chronic illness, environmental medicine, and the mind-body connection. In this episode, Dr. Steph empowers us that we have the power to heal our health and explains we're not victims of our genetics or diagnoses. She digs into heavy metals and toxins that may be hiding in our environment. She talks about the differences between allergies and food intolerances, and common root causes of each. We cover the 6 core principles of naturopathic medicine, which have lots of interesting parallels with regenerative agriculture and regenerative health. Lastly, we cover the most common toxic chemicals you might be exposed to in your daily life! Plus, Dr. Steph gives us her one simple secret we can implement today to improve our health without getting overwhelmed. Why does local food cost more? Is it worth it? If you've wondered what it takes to start a farm that nurtures the land and community while being financially viable, this episode includes so many juicy details on exactly how to make regenerative farms work. Organic agriculture expert and farm consultant Brian Maisenbacher of Earth Growers LLC shares his knowledge from over 10 years of experience in permaculture, ranching, orchards, Korean Natural Farming, market gardens and beyond. He weaves a profound picture of the local food systems at large and how we as consumers can better understand what happens behind the scenes. He shares his advice on how to communicate with our farmers as consumers and the questions we should (and shouldn't) be asking. Plus, we dig into exactly WHY local organic food costs more, how we can change our value systems around food, and the importance of the story behind each unique farm. We also learn about the incredible approach Brian takes to his consulting and farm design process to help farms become more profitable and provide a better way of life for farmers themselves. Starting from a big picture mission and dialing into the details of farm design, infrastructure, marketing, and more, Brian shows us why farming is so much more than planting seeds in the ground or showing up to the farmer's market.
What is glyphosate? Why is it so harmful to our guts and our health? In this episode we dig into all things Roundup. One of the most widely used pesticides in the world, this herbicide has contaminated our soil, water, and even breastmilk. We talk about how glyphosate acts like antibiotic in your body and in the soil, altering the microbiome diversity and negatively impacting immunity. We discuss the rise of "superweeds" and why Mother Nature has weeds in the first place (hint: they are indicators of degraded soil ecosystems). We've all bought gorgeous veggies at the farmer's market only to accidentally have them rot in our fridge because we didn't know how to cook them. In this episode, Farmer and Vegucator Laura Bennett takes the intimidation out of farm-to-table cooking and teaches us how to use organic produce in simple, accessible, and delicious ways. We talk about healing the gap between agricultural and social issues, and how organic or regenerative farming doesn't actually address farmworker rights. Laura illuminates how we cannot truly revitalize soils or food systems without also addressing the human elements surrounding the predominately immigrant workforce that grows and harvests our food. Laura also teaches us some profoundly easy veggie meals that pretty much changed the way we cook from this day forward! You don't want to miss this one! If you've ever wondered about the links between soil minerals (like iron and copper) and our health, hormones, or energy levels, then this is the episode for you! With a $35.6 billion supplement industry in the U.S. alone, it's no surprise that we are bombarded with conflicting information about vitamins and minerals in our diets. The truth is that all minerals have their origins in soil, and as our soils become more depleted, so do our bodies. Supplements and fertilizers aren't necessarily always the answer, in fact, sometimes they can even be harmful! We have to go to the root cause. We decided to sit down with Gaby Simmons of The Healer's Digest to talk all things minerals (specifically iron), hormones, menstrual cycles, fatigue, and the bioavailability of nutrients in our food. We're going to dig into the misinformation we are fed regarding iron deficiencies - the dangers around taking iron supplements, the struggles that many women are going through today with hormonal imbalances, the real root cause of an iron imbalance and also how all of these things latter up to – an imbalance in the soil & our minerals. As always, our guest inspires and educates us with real tangible solutions that we can implement in our lives to help rebalance our body's minerals and support healthy soil at the same time. Kevin Cruz is an agroforestry enthusiast and food forest gardener in southern Florida who offers a uniquely reflective and spiritual approach to growing and reconnecting with our food. In this episode, we deep dive into the practical, spiritual, and cultural side of a fascinating ancient technique called agroforestry, which incorporates trees and perennial food crops into garden or farm systems. We talk about how Kevin's obsession with nutrition eventually led him to farming and how his experience visiting family in Honduras inspired him to broaden his perspectives on how our definition of healthy food must also include healthy community. Cruz explains how the Green Revolution (industrialization and chemical shift in agriculture) impacted the way developing countries grow food. He also shares his journey of shifting his mindset around health stigmas to fully embrace the food culture of different places he travels. Our health is profoundly impacted by the community and culture from which our food is grown. These connections are intact amongst communities of subsistence farmers, but the ties have been severed in our modern industrial food system. We discuss ways to reconnect with that source and forge more connections with local soil and cuisine. Then, we dig into what a food forest is and how agroforestry can transform our perceptions of gardening and agriculture. We discuss how to build soil from bare sound by using a top-down approach that any of us can apply on our own land. Plus, Cruz explains how important above ground diversity is for the diversity of the soil. Cruz explains the key differences between perennial and annual crops. We even explore how you can get started with your own highly diverse perennial "food forest" gardens in any climate. Let us know if you have any questions or feedback about this episode! When we think of stress, we usually go straight to busy schedules or lots of obligations. In this episode, holistic prenatal chiropractor Hannah Bloch reminds us that stress comes in emotional, physical, and chemical forms. Today we're talking all about nervous system dysregulation and its deep connection to the many stressors we are exposed to in our modern day life. If we want to change the trajectory of our children's lives - it starts in pre-conception. We discuss how toxins in our food system impact our microbiomes from birth and how this affects children's nervous systems. We dig into the role of nutrient deficiencies in our soil and how the lack of minerals can affect developing babies as well as postpartum mothers. In a world where we are constantly in a state of fight or flight, preparing a woman's body for pregnancy gives the baby the best chance of coming into this world with as little stress as possible, and the best way to do this is to prep the microbiome by eating nutrient dense food in order to re-regulate the nervous system back to a state of homeostasis. Not all meat is created equal. If you've been wondering what regenerative meat is and how it can heal our bodies and our planet, then this episode is for you. Our guest went from a high-level athlete trying to optimize his performance to a rancher raising the best meat possible for southern California. Regenerative rancher Kevin Muno of https://perennialpasturesranch.com/ (Perennial Pastures) digs into how he and his team are revitalizing 17,000 acres of southern California grasslands through holistic, ecological grazing methods. We dig into the nitty gritty of how regenerative ranching can build soil and drastically improve the health of our planet while providing us with nutrient-dense protein. We explain exactly how cattle can restore grasslands and build topsoil while yielding nutrient-dense, healing food. We also discuss how more regenerative ranches and businesses can dive into this movement to make a difference on a global scale. Kevin also provides profound insights into regenerative entrepreneurship and how to create financially viable businesses that align with serving his community and contributing to something that is much bigger than himself. He offers so much advice for aspiring regenerative ranchers as well as how eaters can support this movement. We explore the differences between annual, low-diversity, soil-destroying industrial systems versus perennial, high diversity, soil-building agroecosystems. And how this directly impacts our gut microbiomes and so many other aspects of human health. We also get into the fascinating details of new nutrient density studies that are helping differentiate between different types of cattle ranching, and how some meats may be drastically healthier for us than others. Lastly, we dive into why Kevin believes that we need science-driven data to identify greenwashing in the regenerative space, and how we can differentiate the truly regenerative producers versus the fakers. If you've been wondering what questions to ask your local ranchers or how to find truly ethical, eco-friendly meat in the grocery store, we've got the answers! From a near-death car accident to chronic pain to complete healing and vitality, this week's guest is living proof that your body is fully capable of regenerating itself. In this episode, we sit down with regenerative health specialist Rita Jean Flemming. She defines the 6 core pillars of regenerative health that she has used to revitalize her own body as well as hundreds of clients in need of deep healing. Based on her learning with Dr. Robert Morse, Rita provides us with an incredible overview of how specific organ systems work together synergistically to achieve true wellness. Just like in nature or soil, no singular system of our bodies can be isolated from the rest. We have to heal them in conjunction. Rita outlines the importance of the chemistry of our cells and explains why alkalinity is so vital for maintaining health at the cellular level. She digs into the science of kidney filtration and adrenal health, translating complicated science into plain language so we can understand how our body's cleansing system affects every aspect of our health. Rita reveals a variety of foods and herbs that are crucial for restoring your kidney and lymphatic function. Then, we dig into the integrated roles of soil health and the gut microbiome in healing from disease and achieving optimal vitality. We talk about why your microbiome is affected by far more than just the things you eat. Lastly, we dive into the fascinating worlds of cellular energy and the endocrine system. Rita explains why certain foods provide the most electrical conductivity and ATP for regenerating cells and tissues. We also explore how a “healing crisis” can often result from the physical, biochemical, and spiritual changes associated with profound health shifts. In this episode we meet with Justin “Cheezy” Taylor, soil food web expert and co-founder of https://www.ramblinfarmers.com/ (Ramblin Farmers), to discuss all things SOIL! What is it? Why is it relevant to our daily lives? We dig into how Cheezy discovered homesteading and farming while hitchhiking in Oregon (best ride he ever caught?) and then fell in love with soil, composting, and all things self-sufficiency. Then, we explore what Cheezy and his partner Logan (the https://www.instagram.com/ramblinfarmers/ (Ramblin Farmers)) learned over the course of 6 years of traveling and working on over 15 organic vegetable farms around the country. Working on farms is no joke and they have some hilarious stories to share! Cheezy digs deep into the fascinating below ground world of soil and how it relates to our lives on a daily basis. But not all soil is equal! We emphasize the importance of a healthy soil microbiome and explore how microbes actually make food nutritious (or not) depending on their diversity and presence in the food web. We draw clear parallels between soil health and human health, including the fascinating connections between digestion, immunity, and microbes. Lastly, we round off with how balance and diversity is so important in the microbiome. Microbes form a protective layer around the plants just like they act as our own defensive army in our bodies. They also facilitate all of our nutrient uptake, which is why tillage and soil destruction with chemicals has led to our food being up to 50% less nutrient dense than it was just a few decades ago. As always, we dive into solutions and concrete actions, including some tips on how to talk to your local farmers and what to look for in grocery stores, as well as how to start your own no-till garden! Welcome to The Soil Collective! In this episode we lay the groundwork for what this podcast is all about. We dig into Kristyn, Logan, and Nicole's unique but similar journeys into holistic healing and getting back to the soil. We define regenerative agriculture as well as regenerative healthcare (hint: it's definitely not gene therapies or stem cell treatments like google may have you think). Next, we talk about how conventional modern agriculture is destroying our soils with an arsenal of war-like machinery and chemicals put into play during the 1950's Green Revolution (which wasn't actually so “green”). It turns out that the soil degradation we're seeing today is shockingly similar to the soil destruction that catalyzed the collapse of many great civilizations. Then, we dive into SOLUTIONS, exploring the 5 core pillars of regenerative agriculture. Amazingly, the core principles of regenerating human health follow the exact same roadmap, culminating in a return to living with natural cycles, eating wholesome real food, and healing our bodies outside of the mainstream medical paradigm. We hope this well help form a foundational understanding of what we're tackling and the abundance of hope we have for healing ourselves and the Earth! We end with some simple actionable items to dig in to regenerating your health today. Happy New Year!
