Novel Proteins for Pets: Omni is Helping Animal Lovers Feed Their Pets Fewer Animals

If America's roughly 180 million meat-loving dogs and cats formed their own nation, they'd reportedly be the fifth biggest meat-consuming country in the world. As pet-keeping has exploded in the developed world, so too has demand for all the chickens, fish, pigs, and cows to feed those pets. There's even been a trend toward human-grade meat in pet food, meaning pet food isn't simply the meat that would have gone into lower end uses.  This is of course a major environmental and animal welfare problem, and it can even be a problem for the pets who are consuming all that meat.  As a result, startups are being formed to provide an animal-friendlier way to feed our animal friends. One such company is Omni Pet Food. Based in Europe, the company was started only a few years ago but has now already sold millions of meals to European dog lovers, and is on track to bring in about £4 million in annual revenue, or about $5 million USD.  By using novel, animal-free proteins from plants, yeast, and algae, Omni claims that its pet food has real health benefits for dogs, and is actually preferred by many dogs to the conventional dog food they were previously given. The company has raised a couple million pounds in investor dollars, including even a crowdfunding campaign that generated £400,000 (half a million USD) in 15 minutes. With so much success in its first nascent years, Omni is aspiring to bring to the world the first-ever cultivated meat cat food by partnering with cultivated meat startup Meatly, which it claims it intends to do within 2024. Already, the company has secured a retail partner for its cat food made with chicken cells grown chicken-free. In this conversation with Omni CEO Dr. Guy Sandelowsky, we talk about everything from who the audience is for animal-free pet food, why non-vegetarians would choose to feed their pets vegetarian, what the future may hold, and more.  Discussed in this episode Omni went through the ProVeg Incubator. Omni's (future) cultivated meat cat food! Our past episodes with UPSIDE Foods (cultivated meat) and Wild Earth (plant-based dog food). Guy recommends reading The Lean Startup. Paul's blog on the rising meat demand from pet-keeping. More about Dr. Guy Sandelowsky Dr. Guy Sandelowsky, co-founder and CEO of Omni Pet Food, is a veterinary surgeon with over 10 years clinical experience and an MBA from Imperial Business School.

"So we get to a certain stage in Western society, I'd never call it a culture, but a society trying to figure out its birth and how to become mature. Whatever it's doing it has slowed down natural relationships. It took us out of the land, put us into factories, put us into institutions where you can learn a trade. It kept giving you jobs that had nothing to do with Earth. And so if you're living, you're working in this box called a factory, and the farmers out there are becoming less and less. Even the farming, the ideas of farming are foreign. And I think that when the technical language came out, we dropped another natural umbilical cord to and with Earth. And so we severed that relationship. So you can see this gradual severing of relationships to Earth with Earth, that now we have to have retreats to learn empathy again. We do all these Westernized versions of piecing ourselves back together and as Indigenous folks where we're getting that way now, but a lot of traditional people don't need that. We don't need environmental movements. You know, Wild Earth is a foreign concept. There are a lot of words that organizations use to rationalize why we need to teach how to be human beings. So you see technology, the Industrial Machine Age taught us this language of disconnection, taught us things like plug-in, get connected. You know, all these words that came along to fill that information that could be controlled by authority now in the Western process. John Gatto, who won the New York State Teacher of the Year award in 2008, upon his retirement, specifically said, 'It takes 12 years to learn how to become reflexive to authority.' For most of us, song is something that permeates our lives on a daily basis. We find it on the radio, in concerts, in ads, and from music services. But song has much deeper roots than the modern commercial age. We humans have been singing for as long as we've been living on this planet—and so have the birds, the wolves, and the wind. They still are, if we listen. Earth Song, a podcast I helped produce for the Idaho Mythweaver's Voices of the Wild Earth series, is an invitation into this vast world of song in nature. Find out more about the Idaho Mythweaver and support their productions at mythweaver.org. You can also find them on Spotify and Apple Podcasts as Voices of the Wild Earth. Enjoy this story!

Sky leads listeners into Siberian shamanism, the raw vitality of the environment, and the connectedness of our healing journeys.Sky tells Dr. T and the Truth Fairy about his awakening into realizing the power of life when he was on the New York subway en route to a peace rally in Central Park. He has pursued peacefulness, connectedness to the natural world, and the embracing of wildness in soul since. Sky believes we need to embrace Indigenous and Aboriginal teachings far more deeply. The discussion Dr. T and the Truth Fairy have with Sky Otter is soul-searching and beautiful. They explore the dominator worldview and the need to regain connectedness with each other and the earth, they discuss Sky's time in Russia and the ongoing situation in Russia and the Ukraine now, and Sky describes the awe of a Siberian shamanic fire circle. Healing and connectedness truly are the focus of this episode and many vulnerable and inspiring moments are shared.“Us smart Westerners need to sort of put aside those big brains a little bit and, not losing our faculty for critical thinking, but just saying, wait a minute, I don't really know everything here and all that stuff I was taught, you know, I'll take it with a grain of salt. And I'll just humble myself before Mother Earth and the Aboriginal people and learn from the earth and learn from them.” -  Sky OtterAbout Sky Otter:Sky Otter formerly known as Bill Pfeiffer is the founder of Sacred Earth Network (SEN) which implemented leading edge visions for over 25 years. This episode is with Valerie Pang, the Innovation Associate for the Good Food Institute Asian Pacific, shorten to GFI APAC, and is generally the first point of contact for anyone who wants to know about the Asian Pacific Region in alternative proteins. If you've been a long-time fan of this podcast and listen to the alternative protein stuff, you hear their name often as the go-to source for getting into this field. During the short time, GFI has existed, they have been a center point of supporting the food industry in adapting to the alternative protein space. Whether big companies are anxious to dip their toes, to ex-business consultants looking for a technical cofounder, GFI has always been at the forefront in developing this ecosystem. And GFI has grown tremendously. What was once a budding organization in the United States has gone global and of course, they have an APAC section, where I was introduced to Valerie Pang, a bright, engaging, and knowledgeable employee who shared with me some of the vegan food Singapore has to offer. It's pretty good. Everyone I know at the Good Food Institute is a rockstar who put their whole self to work. I was fortunate to collaborate on a series like, 4 years ago with some amazing young people. Some who are still at GFI today. I'd say this interview is split into two parts. Part one is Valerie's work experience, in which she actually spent a few years in America working for tech startup categories such as AI and block chain, and switched to food. She then worked at Ryan Bettencourt's company, Wild Earth. In here, we compare and contrast working in tech versus food, and also the differences between America's and Singapore's work culture I did this interview right before visiting like 7 other countries and I ask about work culture to each person I visit.  I will say, I feel a bit ignorant in this interview and I think I glamourize American work culture a bit too much here. I think my findings after all of it is that every company truly is a bit different in their management style and the expectation of work but I digress. The second part of this interview introduces a ton of interesting events and resources that help startups flourish in Singapore. Valerie and GFI APAC do a fantastic job sharing and compiling the useful accelerators, agencies, and other niceties to help support startups and businesses in Singapore.   Shownotes: http://myfoodjobrocks.com/259Valerie

We live in an era when nearly every governor, state congressperson, or mayor supports maximum economic growth.  It doesn't matter what party you are from – or whether you support lower taxes or more social programs. Economic growth covers up all sins. Increasingly, it does not matter what country you are from. Economic growth is promoted as the way forward, the way to becoming more prosperous, the way to becoming a more “developed” nation. But economic growth is not the answer. In the words of Oren Lyons, we are acting like jockeys, whipping our horses to go faster and faster, unaware that the finish line is a brick wall.  How do we get people to understand: We cannot grow infinitely on a finite planet. How do we get people to understand that without fertile soil, clean air and water, all life is endangered, including human life. When will we remember that humans are made of light, air, water, and earth – that what we do to the elements we do to ourselves?  Why has the Western developed world – ever since the industrial revolution – been relentlessly pursuing progress? Why do we put our short-term economic goals first while ignoring the despoilation of the planet? It is not out of malice. It is not entirely out of fear, racism, or greed. It is more that we don't know a different way. We had a dream – a belief that increased goods and services made for a higher standard of living – and that was all that mattered. We have been chasing that dream ever since. In our dream, we don't count our blessings. What we have now is insufficient. We want more – the more the better, and the faster we get there and the more convenient the better.  Fortunately, my two honored guests know this is not the only way to live. They have met people who have another dream and it has changed the way they live. All over the world, Indigenous peoples carry a dream that sees all of creation as our relatives – a dream that respects the right of everything to exist. A dream that sees a way to live life differently, a way to perceive differently, a way to look at the world in a joyful, ecstatic manner – a way to be fully alive!  What will it take to change our dream?  How do we dance and sing a new reality into being? Join us as we delve into this with John Perkins and Bill Pfeiffer.  BIOS Bill Pfeiffer aka “Sky Otter” is the founder of Sacred Earth Network (SEN) which continues to implement leading edge visions for over 25 years. He has also spent much time in the US Southwest learning about Native medicine ways and the crucial importance of the petroglyphs and pictographs. His  book, “Wild Earth, Wild Soul: A Manual for an Ecstatic Culture” has been met with high acclaim. I've read the book and reviewed it for Amazon. The first 50 pages alone are an important summary of Western civilization and what needs to change. John Perkins, a kindred spirit, wrote the Foreword. John Perkins began his career as a “Chief Economist” at a major international consulting firm, advising the World Bank, United Nations, IMF, U.S. Treasury Department, Fortune 500 corporations, and countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. He worked directly with heads of state and CEOs of major companies. He wrote about all this in his first book with the provocative title “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” – one of the most eye-opening true stories you can ever read to find out how the world really operates, and of John's role in creating that, which he came to regret. The book was on the NY times best seller list for 73 weeks. John has lectured at Harvard, Oxford, and more than 50 other universities around the world. He has been featured on ABC, NBC, CNN, NPR, A&E, the History Channel, Time, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Der Spiegel, and many other publications, as well as in numerous documentaries including “The End of Poverty?”, “Zeitgeist Addendum”, and “Apology of an Economic Hit Man”. John was was moved to be a founder and board member of Dream Change and The Pachamama Alliance, tremendous nonprofit organizations devoted to establishing a world that future generations will want to inherit. It is this work that has led to special recognition = such as the Lennon Ono Grant for Peace, and Rainforest Action Network Challenging Business As Usual Award. Economic Hit Man and his other books: “New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man”, “Touching the Jaguar – The World is As You Dream It”, “Psychonavaigation”, “Spirit of the Shuar”,  and “Secret History of the American Empire” have sold more than two million copies. Touching the Jaguar (2020) tells the story of John's journey from Amazonian shaman to economic hit man and then social/environmental activist.  The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man (2016), a follow-up to the classic New York Times bestseller, brings the story of economic hit men and jackal assassins up to date and chillingly home to the U.S. It goes on to provide practical strategies for each of us to transform the failing global death economy into a regenerative life economy.  Despite the popular trope that our furry friends only want to eat meat and chew on bones, dogs are actually omnivores meaning that their diet does not have to consist of only or mainly meat products. While doting owners want to feed their dogs the best food to keep their loving companions in tip-top shape, there are many times that a plant based dog food might be best for them. Plant based dog food? Where does one buy that? One California Startup, Wild Earth, is delivering it right to your door! Pitched on SharkTank, Wild Earth has developed a high protein, plant based dog food using Koji that will have any dog happily munching away. Not only is the food great for dogs, it is also a meat free alternative that relieves pressure on the environment too as dog food is a huge source of meat need and usage. Dr. Robert Michael Pyle is a biologist and writer who has worked in conservation biology around the world. While the Xerces Blue butterfly disappeared in the early 1940s, in its honor Bob founded the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. Contrary to the popular conservation cliché, extinction may not always have to be forever. In the year 2000, Bob published an article he called “Resurrection Ecology” suggesting the Xerces rise again. This proposal is not entirely fictional if we endeavor to rewild ourselves and address some important implications for ethics and justice in the process. I am thrilled to introduce many of you to a wonderful scholar and new friend. Pete and I met this past summer in SoCal at the TheoPsych seminar put on by my friends in the STAR office at Fuller Seminary. (STAR=Science, Theology and Religion). Whenever someone comes on the podcast from a more conservative part of the church I am always honored, because I get lots of rejection emails - even from people who listen! Any way, most of our conversation is about his work as a psychological scientist where he is respected apart from a particular religious identity. I hope you enjoy the conversation and if you run into Pete tell him thank you for joining. Peter C. Hill, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology at Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University. Before coming to Rosemead in 2002, he served for 17 years as Professor of Psychology at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. In 2006 he was honored with a faculty appointment at the University of Cambridge as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Religious and Theological Studies of the Faculty of Divinity. Hill is an active researcher in social psychology and the psychology of religion where he has authored approximately 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. In the conversation we discuss: Why the harder the science the greater % of scientists who believe in God? What are the psychological sciences? How is it an empirical science? The origin story of psychology and the current move towards positive psychology How do you define religion? The search for the sacred? Virtue and character formation What do psychologist think of theologians? Are humans naturally religious? How humans 'think' and make judgements What's going on when we argue and act a fool about religion and politics? Where polarization comes from the nature of religious trauma and paths to healing religious identity in adolescence advice on passing on the beautiful elements of your faith   This Episode is Sponsored By: THE GHOST RANCH Renowned for its natural beauty spanning 21,000 acres, Ghost Ranch is located in the high desert of northern New Mexico, 70 miles north of Santa Fe. Owned by the Presbyterian Church, the ranch is welcoming to everyone. Breathtaking views of red and yellow cliffs, Abiquiu Lake and Pedernal Mesa have inspired countless musicians, theologians, and generations of artists, most famously Georgia O'Keeffe. Day visitors and overnight guests are welcome. Rooms are rustic yet comfortable and many are historic buildings from the ranch's earliest days as a dude ranch. Several tiers of lodging, including campsites, offer something for every budget and adventure type. Several hiking trails, year-round O'Keeffe Landscape Tours and Trail Rides, two museums, seasonal swimming pool, dining hall and trading post make this a perfect retreat destination. Over 200 workshop packages in the arts, spirituality, religion, wellness, archaeology, outdoor and family activities are offered annually. Of special interest is Wild Christ, Wild Earth, Wild Self: A Nature Based Introduction to Seminary of the Wild, which is actually a two year training program for pastors, for spiritual leaders who are already embedded in communities. These are the sorts of folks that are standing on the edge of change and want to respond faithfully by reimagining what it means to be church, by reimaging church in the wild, a way of engaging in ecological and social justice issues in a deep and transformative way. Offered in June and October of 2020. Visit GhostRanch.org for a catalog of these and other workshops. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
