In today's episode of The Root Cause Medicine Podcast, Dr. Kate Kresge sits down with Trevor Connor and Dr. Griffin McMath of The Paleo Diet to explore why the Paleo diet is more relevant than ever in today's world of extreme dieting. You'll hear them discuss: 1. How modern food processing has introduced foods our bodies aren't designed to digest 2. How grains, dairy, and ultra-processed foods may impact overall health and digestion 3. The health benefits of following a paleo lifestyle 4. How the paleo diet supports sustainability, budget-friendly eating, and even brain health 5. The practical aspect of adopting a paleo diet Trevor is the CEO of The Paleo Diet and Co-Founder of Fast Talk Laboratories. A former professional cyclist who competed until age 53, his journey with the paleo diet began when he was a student at CSU studying under Dr. Loren Cordain, the diet's originator. Initially skeptical, his attempts to disprove the diet's principles led him to become one of its strongest advocates after experiencing significant improvements in his own health and athletic performance. Dr. Griffin is a key figure at The Paleo Diet organization, bringing her background in anthropology and integrative healthcare to the team. She has worked in integrative oncology and various healthcare settings, focusing on making the paleo lifestyle accessible and practical for diverse populations. Additionally, Dr. Griffin is a Co-Host of the Fast Talk Podcast. Previously, she was an Executive Director at the Institute for Natural Medicine. Considering lab testing? Episode Summary: Do you know the leading factors that can contribute to Acid Reflux and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)? Below we are providing Dr. Hyman's top list, which we found on his Ultrawellness Center website: -Eating right before bed. -Eating too much. -Being overweight can push your stomach up, causing reflux. -Chronic stress affects the nerves in your stomach, making it impossible to process the food properly. This will cause food to go up instead of down. -Loss of magnesium, which is caused by stress. Magnesium is needed to relax the sphincter at the bottom of your stomach that actually lets the food go down. -Food sensitivities may not be diagnosed, including gluten and dairy. -Bad bacteria or yeast growing in your stomach. If you have been on a lot of antibiotics, if you have been on hormones, if you eat a lot of sugar and processed food, you could grow bad bugs in your gut, and they ferment and can cause reflux. Guest Bio: Dr. Robyn Benson is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine (DOM) who brings an innovative and game-changing approach to today's health care. I have a question that is really bothering me. I try my hardest to do everything as healthy as I can afford and can physically manage, but lately, there's a lot of conversation about the new Fruit and vegetable coating that's called Apeel. I feel that this isn't safe, but what are you supposed to do if the only fruit and vegetable that you can find has that on it?? Have you researched this at all? I'd be interested in what you'd have to say Type A personality and High-ish fasting glucose Kelly writes: Hi Robb! I'm a fairly new listener (just started listening a few months ago - thank you for your super interesting range of topics!). I had a question after reading one short line in your book Wired to Eat. You mentioned that being Type A or “wound tightly” can lead to higher readings of fasting blood sugar. I personally would describe myself as Type A and always wake up with a rush of energy in the morning and an urge to “get things done” immediately. I also have a history of anxiety, although it's been amazingly managed with switching over to zero added sugar, zero grains and by getting great sleep. Recently I've been experimenting with my blood sugar to get a sense of where I'm at. I test after meals (usually 1.5 hours) and my blood sugar is always around 77-100, depending on if I went on a walk after the meal or not. Typically it hovers on average at 86-90 postprandial. And from my understanding, the goal is to be under 120 by two hours. So these results seem great! But everytime I test my fasted blood sugar around 6am, it's on the “higher” side of normal - 89-95. Could this be due to my Type A personality as you mentioned in your book? For reference: I'm a 5'5” 30 year old woman. I'm very active (walk about 13-15,000 steps per day), go to the gym 4-5 days per week for resistance training. I eat lower carb, I don't eat grains, I get about 130 grams of protein per day (around 90-100 of that being from complete sources), I eat 1-2 servings of low sugar fruit per day, I'm not shy on eating whole fats (but I don't track, so not entirely sure on what I eat per day - but I always eat until satisfied). In the past, my triglycerides were well under 100, usually around 70 ish and my blood pressure is about 100/65. Thank you for your insight! I appreciate the way you reason things out. [include file=get-in-itunes.html] Today we had an interesting conversation with Dr. Loren Cordain author of The Paleo Diet. He was a fascinating man who taught us a lot about what the Paleo diet is and what the paleo diet isn't. Sometimes all you need from shows like these is 1 nugget of truth. One of the main things I got from this interview with Dr. Loren Cordain was the fact that the entire idea of the Paleo diet is to "mimic" as closely as possible what ancient man ate. Lots of people who are into the raw vegan diet or the vegetarian diet criticism the Paleo Diet because it's not 100% paleolithic. What do I mean by that? Well people will object to The Paleo Diet by saying that man never would have eaten cows because the genetic ancestor of the cow (the orox) is now extinct. Or many of the fruits and vegetables Paleo advocates eat or hybrid foods and therefore not wild. Some other objections to The Paleo Diet are people think Paleo Diet advocates don't hunt for their food or they do many things in their daily lives that our ancestors wouldn't have. And these are legitimate complaint but what Dr. Loren Cordain said on the show was to get the processed junk food out of your diet, eat more fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, meats, eggs and animal products. Lower sugars in your diet as much as possible and at least you're close. There's no way to recapture that kind of life our ancestors had, it's simply impossible. But trying our best to eat whole, fresh food (some of it uncooked and raw if possible) is what the Paleo Diet is all about. I feel like vegetarians or raw food vegans hold Paleo diet advocates to such a high standard it's impossible to live up to. What I got from Dr. Cordain was just try to eat better. Don't buy junk food with 5,000 ingredients. Shop in the outer parts of the grocery stores. I think we can all be in agreement that eliminating junk food from your diet is a HUGE step in the right direction. Now figuring out what to replace them with is the next step of your journey to health and wellness. I think we can all stand to be less judgmental when it comes to diet and nutrition. People have a right to live their own lives and eat the food they want to eat, even if we think it's harmful to them. So listen to this interview with Dr. Loren Cordain and please comment below. I'd love to hear your thoughts! Please pass this show on to the family and friends you love... We discuss the following and so much more: The top inflammatory foods (Sugar, wheat, corn, soy, dairy) Why processed food is so bad for the body Why grains are so harmful to your tissues, organs and blood The importance of lowering sugar and insulin levels in the body If grass fed meat/beef is necessary if you don't have the money to buy it If food combining is important in the Paleo Diet And so much more!
Got a gut feeling about gluten? Me too. But it's more than just a feeling that something's not quite right. Science is now telling us that gluten intolerance is on the rise, and that more and more people around the world are burdened by conditions that are directly linked to gluten. But in a world where gluten is everywhere (and I mean quite literally everywhere), how do you go about avoiding the grain? And what cost will it have if you don't? Well, that's what I am so excited to share with you today, and there's no better expert to be talking to. Dr. David Perlmutter is a Board-Certified Neurologist and five-time New York Times bestselling author. He serves on the Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. His books have been published in 32 languages and include the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain, The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar, with over 1 million copies in print. Most excitingly, his latest book, Drop Acid, focuses on the pivotal role of uric acid in metabolic diseases and was published in February 2022. For people who love to geek out on the science behind nutrition, this book has been monumental. But today we're here to talk about one of the pressing issues that so many people are facing right now, and that is how to deal with gluten!!! In this week's episode with Dr. David Perlmutter, you'll discover: The rise in gluten sensitivities and the impact gluten is having on your health. How you can restore your gut health after triggers like gluten and antibiotics, plus which supplements you should consider for overall health. What Dr. David Perlmutter eats on a typical day, and the ways he eats healthy while traveling. Why you should eat more healthy fats and the hidden downside to eating legumes. Gluten-free foods to eat, including protein sources, healthy fats, fruits, and vegetables, plus foods to absolutely avoid. And much, much more. In this not-to-be-missed conversation, we peel back the layers on what we've been told about food, and finally begin to discover what is actually true, so you can start to nourish your body with delicious, nutritious foods. Ok- the paleo diet was ground breaking in every way! It was actually started by a man named Walter Voegtlin, who was a gastroenterologist. He called it the ‘Stone Age Diet', a diet that eliminated most all foods that came after the agricultural revolution approximately 10,000 years ago. After him, Loren Cordain is the one who revived it around 2005. This is when I discovered it, and even wrote to Cordain about a health problem of my wife, and he graciously responded. We adopted his diet, and her health problem resolved completely, and quickly! That is when PaleoJay was born…Other Paleo gurus emerged, all of which had a lot to offer in different ways. As in most other things, the approach evolved as more was discovered. Trial and error, along with lots of research, caused the theory to evolve. The one thing that remained constant was the ever-present knowledge, revealed by archeological records, that health and overall wellness had been far better for ancient humans when they consumed an evolutionarily correct diet: only sourdough and otherwise processed grains allowed, if consumed at all, in minimal amounts. The same with sweeteners like sugar, which were largely unknown to our ancestors. My health, and that of my family, improved dramatically from around 2005 to today. My body fat dropped quickly, which revealed my long-exercising body that was buried beneath it. My migraine headaches went away quickly and completely, and I largely stopped cardio or ‘aerobic' types of training for long periods, going only for sprints or ‘heavy hands' walking while swinging dumbbells energetically. I worked way more on flexibility, and began running and walking barefoot- voila- my feet problems also disappeared!Robb Wolf, Loren Cordain's student, emerged as a guru, and led lots of folks on the evolving path of paleo. Chris Kresser was a voice of reason throughout, as were Beverly Meyer and Mark Sisson. I took ideas from each one, tested them in my own life, and either kept or discarded them as I learned and experienced more. Jimmy Moore was a voice of cheerful reason, and his many, many guests kept me informed and enlightened over the years, primarily about proper nutrition. But my ideas about exercise also continually kept evolving, with the lifting of really heavy weights being revealed as problematic, and unnecessary, just as had aerobics and cardio earlier on. The importance of sleep kept rearing its head, as did ancillary practices like forest bathing and the importance of sunlight and then true darkness to maintain our circadian rhythm.A couple of years ago or so, the term Paleo itself kind of disappeared! Now, magazines at the supermarket checkout and the new bestseller books were all about KETO. It was very similar to paleo, but instead of being about a totality of lifestyle being reached through diet and other practices- now it was just consume lots and lots of fat! This, coupled with zero carbs, resulted in fast fat loss; and it appears that, overall: this is basically all the majority of people care about.Keto is, therefore, very one dimensional; focussing on fat loss almost entirely. It is really more, to me, of a therapeutic, short term view of how to live. If you force your body to live off of ketones, of basically FAT, you become, as Mark Sisson puts it: a fat burner. So, your body is running off of the cleanest fuel it can. This way, it can avoid seizures in epileptics, for instance, which has been known about for a very long time.CARNIVORE is the latest form of evolutionary nutritional diets. Not all meat is created equal. If you've been wondering what regenerative meat is and how it can heal our bodies and our planet, then this episode is for you. Our guest went from a high-level athlete trying to optimize his performance to a rancher raising the best meat possible for southern California. Regenerative rancher Kevin Muno of https://perennialpasturesranch.com/ (Perennial Pastures) digs into how he and his team are revitalizing 17,000 acres of southern California grasslands through holistic, ecological grazing methods. We dig into the nitty gritty of how regenerative ranching can build soil and drastically improve the health of our planet while providing us with nutrient-dense protein. We explain exactly how cattle can restore grasslands and build topsoil while yielding nutrient-dense, healing food. We also discuss how more regenerative ranches and businesses can dive into this movement to make a difference on a global scale. Kevin also provides profound insights into regenerative entrepreneurship and how to create financially viable businesses that align with serving his community and contributing to something that is much bigger than himself. He offers so much advice for aspiring regenerative ranchers as well as how eaters can support this movement. We explore the differences between annual, low-diversity, soil-destroying industrial systems versus perennial, high diversity, soil-building agroecosystems. And how this directly impacts our gut microbiomes and so many other aspects of human health. We also get into the fascinating details of new nutrient density studies that are helping differentiate between different types of cattle ranching, and how some meats may be drastically healthier for us than others. Lastly, we dive into why Kevin believes that we need science-driven data to identify greenwashing in the regenerative space, and how we can differentiate the truly regenerative producers versus the fakers. If you've been wondering what questions to ask your local ranchers or how to find truly ethical, eco-friendly meat in the grocery store, we've got the answers! Ben Patrick, the Knees Over Toes Guy http://kneesovertoesguy.com is a force to be reckoned with! I have found, lo over these many years of seeking and discovering fitness and health, that certain pivotal figures tend to pop up as you go. Frank Zane, body builder of the 60's and 70's along with Arnold Swarzzenegger inspired me early on. Loren Cordain of early paleo, then Robb Wolf helped to guide me after that, along with others, into a focus on true health and nutrition. Chris Kresser is always a guiding light of health, and Mark Sisson has some points of light he has pointed out over the years. And John Peterson was a revelation in terms of exercise, although he is now retired from the scene somewhere…But young Ben Patrick comes along, and appears to have done everything wrong in his youth, trying to play basketball only to ruin his knees and athletic aspirations young, by following conventional medical advice advocating always keeping your knees over your toes when exercising! This, as has been said for decades upon decades, is the only way to protect your knees, shins, hips, and feet from damage.Au contraire mon frère! Sounds like Bart Simpson, doesn't it? As young Ben followed this prescription, he progressively destroyed his knees, and got surgery after surgery for his pains. Finally, since he is the type of young guy who does not give up, he started experimenting on his own body, consciously and deliberately figuring out on his own (with the help of strength coach Charles Polinquin who I remember reading back in the day) how to strengthen all the muscles around the knee, and down through the hips to the feet! It worked!Following his own methods, Ben added over 2 feet to his vertical jump (his passion is basketball), but more importantly totally bulletproofed his knees, hips, shins and feet to absorb all the shocks of athletics and the stress of aging as well.He rebuilt his 66 year old mother's legs as well, and he documents her on videos too! And the best part of all is that, watching him on youtube, he reveals all of his exercises and progressions online, showing how you too can duplicate his results.Given all of his information, I have been inspired to add in his exercises within my own daily workouts. I have no knee pain, or indeed any pains at all, but I want to make sure that I never do- besides which, his exercises cover areas of the body in ways that are sure to avoid injury as opposed to big compound exercises like squats and deadlifts that, while strengthening overall, do not specialize safely on some muscle groups that are crucial. You can go to failure on things like weighted leg raises (he uses a monkey foot device that holds a dumbbell to your foot) and curls, and won't be injured as you would doing exercise to failure on squats or deadlifts. Completely safe! Also, his split squat progressions and his very crucial tibialis exercise can totally protect, strengthen, and bullet proof you from foot to hip. And so, I have revamped my weekly workouts to include them all, in one form or another. In my early morning, I make coffee (pour over in a simple Miata coffee maker), and then go barefoot in shorts into my living room. I stretch, and do virtual resistance exercises, manually resisted ones, and isometrics. I spend about an hour, as I watch a movie or news on television, and wind up pleasantly exhausted and all stretched out! I often finish then with high volume pushups and straight legged situps. I have thus stimulated my entire body from feet to neck. But, usually 3 times per week, sometimes only 2, I go down to my basement dungeon and do gymnastic

— “The focus of the Paleo Diet is not on ratios, but on eating the foods we evolved to eat. The ratio is a by-product.” Valeria Teles interviews Trevor Connor — the owner of Paleo Diet, CEO of Fast Talk Laboratories, Writer, and Podcaster. Trevor Connor is the CEO of The Paleo Diet, LLC. He was Dr. Loren Cordain's final graduate student at Colorado State University, where his research focused on the effects of a Paleo-style diet on autoimmune conditions. Working with Dr. Cordain, his pilot study included close to 60 volunteers with diverse conditions ranging from Crohn's disease to multiple sclerosis to Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Trevor comes from a varied background. After graduating from Cornell University in 1995 he started his career in website development. He soon followed his passion and became a semi-professional cyclist, training at the Canadian National Center in British Columbia where he became a coach and team manager. He later managed the Team Rio Grande cycling team—the top-ranked amateur team in America whose alumni include top-five Tour de France finisher Tejay van Garderen and Giro d'Italia stage winner Chad Haga. Initially, Trevor studied exercise physiology and nutrition to support his own training and to improve his coaching. At 38, he decided it was time to hang up the bike; he moved to Colorado to get his masters degree in bioenergetics and nutrition. Trevor had studied traditional sports nutrition for over a decade, and when he took Dr. Cordain's class in 2009, he was highly skeptical of the Paleo Diet concept. But after experimenting with the diet, Trevor was able to return to the professional cycling ranks at 40, finishing in the top five in several races and establishing himself as the top ranked 40-plus rider in the country for several years running. In addition to his role as CEO, Trevor writes the "Coach's Corner" section for the international cycling magazine VeloNews and co-hosts the popular endurance sports science podcast Fast Talk. Trevor is also CEO of Fast Talk Laboratories, LLC, a business dedicated to the science of endurance sports. To learn more about Trevor Connor and his work, please visit: https://www.thepaleodiet.com/ — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. Over time we’ve seen an increasing number of clients come to us with symptoms of histamine intolerance, including seasonal allergies, headaches, skin issues and digestive problems. And although doctors would likely treat these as separate conditions, we believe common root causes are certainly at play. We’ve learned that histamine problems often originate in the gut, but environmental and lifestyle factors can definitely make them worse. On this podcast, NBT Scientific Director and coach Megan Hall and I discuss histamine intolerance, including causes, symptoms, and potential treatments. We talk about why this condition is difficult to diagnose, and some of the signs that suggest your “histamine bucket” is overflowing. Megan describes the best options for fixing the problem at the source, including diet, supplements, and environmental changes. Be sure to see the show notes to get the outline Megan wrote to prepare for this podcast. In this episode of Functional Medicine Research, I interview dietician Tracey Long in a deep discussion about how to overcome mold and biotoxin illness. Tracey has firsthand experience with mold and biotoxin illness so she brings a unique and valuable perspective to this topic. We discussed Tracey's personal journey with mold and biotoxin illness, how to test your home for mold, lab testing, associated conditions, symptoms, and management strategies to get well. Full transcript on How to Overcome Mold and Biotoxin Illness Dr. Hedberg: Well, welcome, everyone, to "Functional Medicine Research." I'm Dr. Hedberg. Really excited today to have my good friend and colleague, Tracey Long, on the show. Tracey is a registered dietician, with specialty certification training in Integrative and Functional Medical Nutrition Therapy and The Bredesen Protocol to End Alzheimer's. She owns a private practice, Big Picture Health in Hendersonville, North Carolina, where she sees clients via video consultations. She specializes in working with clients with neurodegenerative conditions, biotoxin illnesses, gastrointestinal conditions, and nutrigenomics. She is a published author and teaches health coaches for Chris Kresser's Health Coach Training Program. Tracey's education includes a master of public health, an emphasis on nutrition and exercise physiology from the Colorado School of Public Health, where she studied under Dr. Loren Cordain who many of you may know as the author of "The Paleo Diet." And she's also a registered yoga teacher and certified exercise physiologist. Her personal interest include hiking with her husband and dog, urban farming, teaching yoga, foraging for mushrooms in the mountains of Western North Carolina, growing medicinal herbs and produce, paddleboarding, and visiting her three grown daughters in Colorado. Tracey, welcome to the show. Tracey: Thank you so much, Nik. I'm so happy to be here with you today. Really appreciate the opportunity. Dr. Hedberg: Yes. Yeah. It's gonna be fun. So why don't we begin by talking about your personal journey with mold? And that's gonna be the topic of today, mold and biotoxin illness. So why don't you share your personal journey? Tracey: You bet I'd love to. And really, my personal journey, Nik, really started with a professional journey in that I became very interested in neurodegenerative conditions and I completed Dr. Bredesen's training, as you mentioned, The Bredesen Protocol to End Alzheimer's. And Dr. Bredesen has sub-categorized underlying causes of Alzheimer's, and one of those underlying causes he refers to as type three Alzheimer's that's really related to toxins. And he's identified three categories of primary toxins. The first one is heavy metals and the second one is biotoxins. And in that category, biotoxins, certainly, mold is included and also tick-borne illnesses. And now even recently we've added COVID-19, especially from the standpoint of, you know, people who have had COVID-19 and they haven't recovered. You know, we're referring to them as long haulers. And I bring that up. I'll tie that all in in just a minute. The third type of toxin Dr. Bredesen addresses are organic compounds. So there are things like herbicides and pesticides, things that we can be highly exposed to in the environment. It was interesting in that journey that I had that training and I started working with clients with all the subtypes of Alzheimer's, little did I know that I would end up having my own personal experience. So I was assisting clients who had been exposed to mold, certainly, and then we ended up moving to North Carolina. It's in the South. It's very moist here, as you know, I know you live here too. So, you know, we've had a year of record rainfall here. So I moved from Colorado, which was very hot and dry to the Southeast, which is living like in the tropics, really. We're living in a rental house. And when we found the house,

Biohackers Amy Lamotte and Leslie Kenny teach us how to hack autoimmune disease with simple and effective techniques that anyone can follow. Their tips come from their own battles with autoimmune disease as well as the many people they have been coaching in their clinical nutrition and health coaching practices. Leslie was misdiagnosed at 34 with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis requiring thousands of dollars to be spent on medication, until she hacked her autoimmune disease treating it and reversing it herself through diet, supplementation and testing. Now at age 55 she lives free of signs and symptoms of autoimmunity. Amy started having the signs of autoimmune disease at 18, but was continually turned down by doctors who couldn't or wouldn't help until she was diagnosed 16 years later of Hashimoto's Disease. Today Amy lives free of the symptoms of her autoimmune disease through diet, lifestyle and supplementation. Both Amy and Leslie agree that gut health is fundamental for autoimmune diseases. A few books that were influential to Amy's and Leslie's journey to fight their gut issues were Barry Sears' The Anti-Inflammation Zone and The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain. His research emphasis over the past 15 years has focused upon the evolutionary and anthropological basis for diet, health and well being in modern humans.Currently, Dr. Cordain's research team is exploring the connection between dietary elements that increase intestinal permeability (primarily saponins and lectins) and autoimmune disease, particularly multiple sclerosis. He has lectured extensively on the "Paleolithic Nutrition" concept world wide, and has written three popular books (The Paleo Diet, John Wiley & Sons; The Paleo Diet for Athletes, Rodale Press; The Dietary Cure for Acne) summarizing his research findings. Years ago, my own gut problems motivated me to seek answers outside the existing medical establishment, and with the help of my wife Julie I was able to get my diet and health back on track. Having now worked with thousands of athletes on their own health challenges and performance goals, it’s clear there are specific pitfalls that can accompany a high-level training regimen. On this podcast, NBT Scientific Director and coach Megan Hall is with me to discuss the latest science and clinical practice on the athlete’s gut. She talks about the importance of having a healthy GI system, why athletes struggle in this area, and specifically what to do when problems arise. We also discuss what I did to regain my own gut health. Be sure to see the end of the show notes for the outline Megan wrote to prepare for this podcast. It’s an excellent resource for anyone seeking solutions for their own gut problems. In this episode, Sarah and Stacy welcome special guest, Mickey Trescott of Autoimmune Wellness, for a conversation about how far the Autoimmune Protocol has come, the new AIP-specific clinical trials, and where the movement is today. Click here to listen in iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 341: Mickey Trescott of Autoimmune Wellness (0:00) Intro Please welcome special guest, Mickey Trescott of Autoimmune Wellness! Mickey has a new book coming out titled The Nutrient Dense Kitchen. With the explosion of the Autoimmune community in the past couple years, Mickey has noticed there's been a loss of focus on nutrient density. Mickey wrote this book to be approachable with a lot of nutrient dense recipes so you don't have to be afraid of food. You can change your health by what you put on your plate! Sarah is super excited about Mickey's new cookbook! It's gorgeous and she and her children are already bookmarking recipes they want to try. (5:11) AIP Then Mickey and Sarah were two of the first handful of people to do the autoimmune diet. Sarah first gave it a try in 2011, just 4 months after discovering the Paleo Diet. Mickey first found the Autoimmune Diet after seeing Dr. Terry Wahls' TEDx presentation on how she manages MS with diet and lifestyle. At that time there were just a few mentions of the autoimmune protocol - one page in Robb Wolf's book The Paleo Solution and half a page in Loren Cordain's The Paleo Diet. Funny thing is, the food recommendations on each of these lists didn't even match up, it was such a new idea. Stacy remembers back in the day people didn't even know what nightshades are! (15:15) AIP Clinical Trials There are now clinical trials which are beginning to bring medical awareness to the autoimmune protocol. Mickey and her partner at Autoimmune Wellness, Angie Alt, are working with researchers on AIP clinical trials. Mickey, Angie, and Sarah have co-created and co-teach the AIP Certified Coach Practitioner Training Program, an advanced training for practitioners across the spectrum of both natural and conventional healthcare. Up til now, evidence that AIP works has just been anecdotal. The study Mickey and Angie are involved with showed a 73% improvement in remission in just 6 weeks! It was an 11 week study. The first 6 weeks, patients did Angie's SAD to AIP in 6 program (which transitions people into the AIP diet). Then they stayed on the AIP diet for the next 5 weeks. They were given copies of The Paleo Approach and The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook as their two main resources. 73% of patients were in full clinical remission by the time they finished transitioning to the autoimmune protocol in week 6 and maintained it. Mickey says the most powerful takeaway was that these people were not newly diagnosed. They'd been living with an autoimmune disease for an average of 19 years and many of them had failed biologic treatment. The 27% of people who didn't achieve remission still had quantifiable improvement, but didn't achieve remission. More studies on quality of life and gut microbiome health are coming. They've also partnered with Dr. Rob Abbott for a study on Hashimoto's. They crowd-funded this study thanks to the AIP community! AIP has always been more than a fad diet because it's based on science and logic. (23:50) AIP today This movement has grown thanks to the people who've done it! There are over 100 AIP bloggers today. Thousands have told their doctors about their results on AIP. It has a powerful snowball effect! Sarah guesses there are at least a million people out there who have a connection to AIP. It's thanks to everyone who has done AIP that there are now more options on the grocery and in restaurants. One of the most special things about AIP is the community - and they're all over the world! Get online and find an AIP group today! Pick up a copy of Mickey's new AIP-friendly book, The Nutrient Dense Kitchen, online or in stores today! Sarah says a big thank you to Mickey and Angie for all their incredible work in the AIP community. Connect with Mickey at www.autoimmunewellness.com! Get your questions in! We want to hear from you! And there's no end to questions we can answer and topics we can address! Engage on social media! That's how we get feedback! Thank you for listening.
On February 17, members of the CMJ Masterpass joined me in a live Zoom meeting to ask me anything about nutrition, and here’s the full recording! We talked about lots and lots of things: using the Oura ring to measure HRV and optimize athletic performance and recovery, what to do in the context of diabetes if T3 doesn’t increase your heat production, whether keeping warm with clothing has health benefits if you can’t get your body temperature up, what to do about high morning glucose, how to get rid of heavy metals, how to repair bone, what vegans should do to get arachidonic acid levels up, zinc and copper supplementation, kale and spinach smoothies, blood donation when your transferrin saturation is high but your ferritin is low, dealing with a high resting heart rate, lots of questions on organic acid markers, how estrogen can mess up vitamin B6 markers even in men and when that means you should lower your protein intake, whether combining carbs and fat makes people fat, how many eggs to eat a day, how the nutritional needs of children are special, vitamin A toxicity in and out of pregnancy, creatine non-responders, intermittent fasting hurting sleep… This episode is brought to you by Ample. Aaron Zober brings on C.J. Hunt, who wrote, directed, and narrated the documentary "The Perfect Human Diet", which talks about his experience after going into cardiac arrest and searching for the perfect human diet. C.J. had dabbled in vegetarianism and veganism for discovering optimum health with the paleo diet. C.J. Hunt talks about the top professionals he interviewed in his film in the areas of archaeology, anthropology, nutrition, and medicine about how saturated fat has played in an important role in human evolution and why it's still needed for optimum health. C.J. and Aaron get into the studies of Dr. Weston A. Price and why the WAPF and paleo communities are more similar than what recent articles have said. Aaron and C.J. also discuss why everyone needs to have saturated fat, even if it's hard to get access to truly pastured meat where you live.

Losing Frustration and Gaining Confidence Jonathan Price is a Personal Trainer and Nutritional Therapy Practitioner with 16 years of experience in the health and wellness industry. He prides himself on meeting people where they are in their journey and celebrating all progress big or small. Jonathan grew up a chubby kid that was not too great at sports (although that was his passion) he was picked on because of his weight and even had a sibling sing "rolling down the river"' to him (due to his belly fat rolls) and was cut from athletic teams over and over. Jonathan persevered and finally made the high school basketball team on his third attempt. While this helped him lose over 25 lbs of excess fat, now he was a skinny, unathletic teenager. Jonathan began to lift weights on his own and as he became stronger, his self confidence grew and grew and Jonathan knew he wanted to help people do the same: to feel empowered and strong and more confident about their bodies. Nutritionally, Jonathan struggled with digestive issues from childhood through adulthood. By chance he began reading the Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain and eventually the Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf. This take on ancestral nutrition made rational sense to him and within weeks of implementing a real food, ancestral approach his digestive issues all but disappeared. Jonathan began to read and research nutrition at every opportunity and finally enrolled in the Nutritional Therapy Practitioner program through through the Nutritional Therapy Association which gave him the qualifications and knowledge to begin helping more people and especially those have become frustrated with diet and losing weight. Questions you'll hear on the podcast today How to navigate all of the diets and recommendations out there? How to maintain a healthy diet on the go or on the road? The difference between a Paleo lifestyle and a Paleo diet to lose weight and get healthy!
We're told that potatoes aren't good for us. It's true if you're talking about GMO potatoes, which most people eat these days without ever knowing it. Please don't ever eat GMO anything. But grown traditionally—unsprayed and certified organic—potatoes can not only be good for you, they can be great. You see, potatoes belong to a very special yet little-known category of food known as safe starches. These safe starches are far removed from the grains and cereals that make us fat and foster degenerative diseases. I'll tell you more about them in a moment. Meanwhile, it's time to celebrate the humble potato and its wonderful gifts. Potatoes come in more than 100 varieties. They can be prepared in almost as many forms—steamed, boiled, baked, sautéed, or what have you. The botanical name for potatoes is Solanum tuberosum. They were introduced to Europeans in 1621, when Spanish Conquistadors brought them back from South America, where they'd been cultivated since 8000 BC. Seafaring men relied heavily on them as a source of Vitamin C to protect sailors from scurvy. Potatoes are now the fourth largest crop grown throughout the world. They're good for supplying you with important B complex vitamins, especially vitamin B5, B6, niacin, and folate. They're also full of minerals like phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, copper and iron as well as antioxidants, phytonutrients, carotenoids and flavonoids. In 1995, the heroic potato was the first vegetable to be grown in space, to feed astronauts on long space voyages. Now let's take a look at where some of the false beliefs, which have undermined our appreciation for organic potatoes, come from. I think you'll find this interesting. You may not know that for thousands upon thousands of years, our ancestors lived not in forests as we have been told, but in grasslands. They survived by digging up tubers, roots and corms—all of which are ancestors to today's potato. Early man relied heavily on these starchy plants which today are known as safe starches. What scientists now call the Paleolithic diet was made up of 15 to 20% of these foods dug from the ground, eaten with 50 to 70% of fatty animal-based foods, including insects, eggs, birds, reptiles, and creatures from the sea. Then, along came Loren Cordain, who is considered the father of the Paleolithic diet. He made a few inaccurate assumptions. He claimed that our ancestors never ate starchy root vegetables—something we know now to be simply untrue. By the way, Cordain is said to have greased his pots with canola oil—heaven forbid—and washed down his Paleo meals with diet soda. What he apparently didn't do was delve deep enough into the vast research now available in regard to diets of primitive peoples from experts like Samuel Hearne, Weston Price, Stefansson, and Cabeza de Vaca. Anyway, here's the truth: Early humans were genetically programmed to thrive on these starches—a group to which our modern potato now belongs. We still are today. Safe starches include white rice, potatoes, sago, tapioca, and sweet potatoes. Grown organically, all of these foods can help improve digestive health. But they need to be cooked gently, so any natural plant toxins—which all plants contain to some degree—become neutralized. By the way, brown rice is not considered a safe starch since the phytin it contains can interfere with the absorption of certain minerals and provoke an immune response. There are no known autoimmune antibodies generated by white rice protein. When it comes to potatoes, you will want to store them in a cool dark place. The unwanted solanine and chaconine toxins that they contain are activated if you expose them to light and heat. It's equally important that you throw away any potatoes that may have become discolored or are no longer fresh.
