Today's guest is Kelsey Jang, who is an Army Company Commander, CrossFit athlete, and rugby player. I asked her onto the show because she's stepping into the world of real estate investing in a way that is both simple and relatable. In this episode, I have her to share her experience with buying her first rental property (priced at $110K with 10% down), in order to provide you with an example for how she got started. As you all know, I talk about real estate a lot—because I own residential rental properties, an AirBnb property, and a variety of commercial real estate, including multi-family, industrial, and self storage assets—but I want to feature her story because she's just getting started—which is probably were a lot of you are at. As brief background on Kelsey, she's also an elite rugby player, she's a talented CrossFit athlete and coach, and she was commissioned into the Army as an Engineer Officer and is currently serving as the Company Commander of Bravo Company, 249th Engineer Battalion at Fort Bragg, NC. She has a Civil Engineering degree from West Point and a Master's degree in Engineering Management from the University of Louisville. She also completed Sapper School and has her Sapper tab. You're going to learn a lot from her today, especially if you're looking to become a real estate investor and don't know where to start. So, Kelsey, welcome to the show! I've invited Wendy onto the podcast because she did something extraordinary, which is that she has been covering women's rugby in the US and internationally since 2006. Pam is an elite athlete across multiple sports, former USA rugby player, entrepreneur, and the founder of Sport Bigs (SportBigs.com), which is both a toy company and a movement! In this interview, we explore her experience as a multi-sport Team USA athlete (softball, rugby, and aquabike) and what it takes to compete in six (yes 6!) World Championships. We explore her lessons learned as a female entrepreneur and dig into the reasons why she was inspired to launch her company, Sport Bigs. Pam launched Sport Bigs in 2021 to be the world's first plush toy product focused on promoting women athletes and athletics. Using the likenesses and voices of elite women athletes, Sport Bigs meets the unmet need for female-centric sports toys, with a larger mission of helping women's sports achieve the exposure, respect and sponsorship dollars they deserve. With the launch of this disruptive company, Pam has created an entirely new toy category and is changing the entrenched world of sports broadcasting and sponsorship as we know it. Of course, we also explore what it means to be an EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) Coach and how Pam has risen to be EOS's Head of Marketing. At its core, EOS is a business operating system that helps entrepreneurs get what they want from their business. Finally, we discuss tactical ways that we can all be better advocates for women's sports and how we can make sports environments more inclusive. While the clothing brand Patriots Believe gives you a chance to wear your beliefs, the co-founders (Rachel Willis and Kate Mcmahon) didn't start their venture to be an apparel company. They started it to make a bold statement that Patriots look like "us" - Americans who believe in social and racial justice and human rights for all. James Baldwin once said, “I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.” Baldwin's words are the sound of patriotism. Since 2016, former educators Rachel Willis and Kate Mcmahon have watched right-wing, conservative, white supremacist, exclusionary people co-opt the American flag and claim patriotism – and they grew tired of it. They want people to understand that patriots are not the insurgents that stormed the Capitol on January 6th or those who had previously and have since stood by in silence. Patriots are people who see the possibility America holds to be a place of true social justice for all. They believe that #PatriotsLookLikeUs, and Patriots Believe: Black Lives Matter Climate Change is Real Love is Love No Human is Illegal Healthcare is a Human Right Women+ Control Wombs Voter Rights are Civil Rights In addition to building a community of inclusive Patriots, Rachel and Kate are using Patriots Believe to provide funding for deserving organizations, using a profit sharing model to fund organizations that have proven track records of supporting social and racial justice. Importantly, they are also profit sharing along racial lines. To learn more about this innovative profit-sharing model, listen in and listen up.
