Penn and I have a daughter who is graduating high school and going to college in the fall. And I am doing totally fine, except the… chest pains… eye twitches… hair loss… (this is totally normal, right?) I process my emotions through preparation. I plot everything on the calendar and make all the Google Docs. Penn needs to process his emotions through, well… actually feeling them. He knows there's a shift in our family dynamic coming and it's making him sentimental. In this episode of Laugh Lines, we talk about the emotional rollercoaster of parenting a graduating high school senior and some fun distractions that are keeping us laughing. We discuss the chaos of senior sleepovers, why I want to give squirrels hemorrhoids, and we hear from fellow parents navigating this bittersweet season. Whether you're a fellow Gen X parent or just listening to hear how I almost got impaled by a gnome, this episode may make you laugh, cry, or develop an eye twitch too. How Did We Survive the 90s?

This week on Laugh Lines, Penn and I take a trip down memory lane with the most unhinged things Gen X did in the 90s. (Seriously… how are we even alive?) If you've ever gotten a late fee at Blockbuster or ridden in the back of a pickup truck without a seatbelt, this episode is for you. Welcome home. We heard from so many listeners who shared amazing stories: homecoming games with a live tiger from the zoo, going on cross-state road trips as teenagers, and even piling 20 college kids into the back of a U-Haul with a keg. (We survived but wow, we did some dumb stuff.)Despite the chaos, there's so much we loved about growing up Gen X. Penn and I discuss our own unhinged memories, take your stories from the laugh line, and even talk about the stuff we should bring back. (Are we not letting kids be as independent now?) Also stay tuned for our special Gen Z 90s translations at the end! Have a story for us? Leave us a voicemail at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. If you've been here a while, you know your friend Kim walks with anxiety on a daily basis. I often have thought “if I could sleep through the night, eat enough protein, and manage my anxiety and emotions, I'd be unstoppable.” And that's because anxiety has often stopped me — from resting, from focusing, from showing up the way I want to. My brand of anxiety can be debilitating at times. So how can you begin to manage anxiety and emotions? This week we invited our new friend Ethan Kross on the podcast to help give us tips on just that. Ethan is a psychologist, neuroscientist, and director of the Emotion and Self-Control Lab at the University of Michigan. He's also the author of Chatter and Shift, all about taking control of your emotions and the voice in your head. We discuss how distance your self-talk, mentally “time travel” and ways Penn deals with emotional flooding due to ADHD.Stick around until the end when we take a call from the Laugh Line on all-inclusive resorts, talk about borgs, and Penn's favorite new show, Game Changer with Sam Reich. I have always endorsed my experience with pelvic floor therapy after having kids. It was life-changing, and insurance covered it. (Score.) But what if I told you that pelvic floor therapy wasn't just for women who have had babies? What if I told you pelvic floor therapy could be for men too? This week on the podcast, we talked to Dr. Danielle Owens, a physical therapist and CAPP-Pelvic certified specialist. While pelvic health is typically associated with women, Dr. Owens stresses that men also face pelvic floor dysfunctions and can benefit greatly from therapy. We discuss why pelvic floor therapy is important, and we both work our pelvic floor muscles live on-air. Also, listen if you want to never look at blueberry the same again. (Although very helpful!)We end the show discussing if we are too old for day trips, what a ‘darty' is, and we take more of your calls on the laugh line. How to use mnemonic devices and micro-deadlines to manage ADHD symptoms and boost your productivity. A transformative approach to handling mistakes in relationships, leading to greater empathy and connection. Hey there, fellow neurodivergent friend! Can we talk about how our brains are wired a bit differently? Sometimes, it's just a little, and other times, it feels like we're operating on a whole other frequency. And let's be honest, it can be frustrating as hell when the world seems built for a standard-issue brain. Now, if you've been hanging out with me for a while, you've probably picked up that I've got ADHD. And you know what? I love it. Sure, there are struggles - plenty of them. But I've learned to manage those, or at least stay flexible when my brain decides to throw a chaotic dance party. For me, lifestyle choices have made a bigger difference than anything else. I think a big reason why is that they're empowering. You don't feel dependent on something external for your survival. We're going to dive into some of those lifestyle choices today. TPP 374: Penn & Kim Holderness Talk About How ADHD is Awesome in Love & in Life

I've been a longtime fan of Kim and Penn Holderness, who I've had a parasocial relationship with for years as I love to consume and share their funny music videos, vlogs, and skits. And in more recent years, it's exciting to see them talking openly and with humor and authenticity about Penn's ADHD and how together, Kim and Penn navigate their marriage and raising kids in their mixed neurotype household. All that say, I loved having a chance to sit down with Kim and Penn to talk about their brand new book, out next week, called ADHD is Awesome: A Guide to (Mostly) Thriving with ADHD, which they wrote because they are on a mission to reboot how we think about ADHD by taking us inside their ADHD world, and all highs, lows, and moments in between. I think what I loved about their book, and this conversation, the most is that Kim and Penn are real and open about how beautiful, and yes, messy, it can be to navigate family life as a person with ADHD or as someone married to an ADHDer. And so in today's conversation, that's what we hear about — how Penn has learned to hack himself to manage his ADHD-related challenges, the ways in which ADHD has enriched their family life, how Kim has reframed her thinking and approach to support Penn's executive function challenges and be an “ADHD whisperer” while also taking care of her own emotional and mental well-being. After listening to this episode, I highly recommend you go to their Instagram or YouTube and check out their content. Their first book together, Everybody Fights, about how couples can fight better and end your arguments feeling closer, more loved, and better understood, came out in 2021. The book we're talking about today, ADHD is Awesome, comes out April 30.   About Kim and Penn Holderness Kim and Penn Holderness have been married for sixteen years. For seven of those years, they have chronicled their marriage and their family with funny music videos, vlogs, skits, and a podcast. Their videos have resulted in over a billion views and 4.5 million followers across social media. Penn and Kim honed their storytelling skills with twenty-five combined years in the TV news business. Today, they own their own company, Holderness Family Productions, where Kim is Chief Executive Officer and Penn is Chief Creative Officer. As well as creating content for their channels, they also work alongside brands and agencies to shape product launches and marketing campaigns. Their book about improving communication in marriage was released March 30, 2021. Penn and Kim live in Raleigh, North Carolina, with their children, Lola and Penn Charles, and fluffy dog, Sunny.   Things you'll learn from this episode How Penn navigated being diagnosed with ADHD in college and how that impacted his understanding of self and identity The power of “operation mindset shift” and reframing ADHD traits as strengths How Kim came to understand how Penn's brain wiring impacted his executive functioning How Penn has “hacked” himself to manage his ADHD symptoms and challenges The power of empathy, comfort, and connection when navigating a mixed neurotypes relationship What some of the “upsides” are for friends and family members of people with ADHD   Resources mentioned for How ADHD is Awesome in Love & in Life The Holderness Family ADHD is Awesome: A Guide to (Mostly) Thriving with ADHD by Kim and Penn Holderness The Holderness Family Podcast ADHD is Awesome Book Trailer (YouTube) Everybody Fights: So Why Not Get Better At It? by Kim and Penn Holderness Dr. Ned Hallowell Dr. Ned Hallowell on How Parents Can Best Support Their Children with ADHD (Tilt Parenting podcast) Dr. Emily King Learn with Dr. Emily (podcast) ADHD 2.0: New Science and Essential Strategies for Thriving with Distraction - from Childhood Through Adulthood by Dr. Ned Hallowell Driven to Distraction: Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder from Childhood through Adulthood by Dr. Ned Hallowell and Dr. John Ratey Learn more about your ad choices. In basketball practice, he would nearly chew through his shirt if he wasn't running around enough. If he was growing up in the 2020's, he'd be treated for ADHD pretty quickly. But back in the 80's, ADHD information wasn't widespread, and it wasn't until college that he was officially diagnosed. Kim and Penn Holderness pulled on their Christmas Jammies 10 years ago and churned out a viral video many still remember a decade later. They teamed up with their two young kids, Lola and Penn Charles, to rap about all the things that made 2013 special for them. Today, they are still making videos, but they are also releasing books, games, and merch. While they did win the 33rd season of The Amazing Race in 2022, Kim says another round of reality TV is not on their short list. She said, “Maybe like if you needed really middle-aged comedy, like the Golden Survivor. Also, if I needed to get trim really quick for an event.” But, she and Penn are game for sharing their family experiences in a fun and relatable way. “I think a lot of people make content that shows how funny they are, how great their life is, but as a viewer watching it, what's in it for me, that you're funny? No, I would prefer like make me laugh, show me something that I can relate to, make me feel something,” Kim said. She said News 6 helped shape her creative process. “I would say I learned a lot from our news director at WKMG, when I was there. His name was Skip Valet. When I was there for the afternoon pitch meeting, you had to walk in with three ideas. And if you didn't have an idea, (he would say) you need to take another way in to work.” And after making a pitch Kim said, “He would always kinda answer back like, ‘why would a viewer care about this story you just pitched.'” In addition to nailing the creative process, Kim and Penn bring a lot of raw talent to their content. Kim was trained in dance and Penn is a musician. But, even with all of that working in their favor, Penn said the duo threw a lot of spaghetti at the wall to see what would stick. Every video didn't go viral, but their success is evident. They currently have their own website, have nearly 5 million followers on Facebook, amassed nearly 18 million likes on TikTok, and are releasing a new book called “ADHD is Awesome.” Kim says Penn's book, “Is written for and by an ADHD brain.” The duo already has a game available at stores but said they hope to have another one available on Amazon by Black Friday. They also have taken up pickleball and are now offering a line of paddles online. They aren't alone in their success. Kim said their kids are very busy, but they are still active in some of their videos and have been making money with them since their original Christmas Jammies video went viral. Social media is almost inescapable in today's world, for better or worse. Today around seven-in-ten Americans use social media to engage the world, according to the Pew Research Center. The numbers are growing as quickly as the new social media platforms to accommodate the connections. And while too much of it amounts to doom scrolling society's slog towards perdition, British journalist Jon Ronson rightly noted, “The great thing about social media was how it gave a voice to voiceless people.” And too often voiceless has described the neurodivergent and the people who love them. Take parents of children with autism, ADHD, and other learning differences desperately searching for ways to support them. Or neurodivergent individuals longing to turn the page on wrongheaded narratives that cast them as weird. Enter social media — part support group and living, breathing Info Please almanac for moms and dads in search of life hacks for parenting their kids with learning disabilities, and also a far-reaching megaphone for young and proudly neurodivergent content creators to shout out their truth. On this episode, you'll meet a woman who helps parents on Facebook sort through the extra that often accompanies rearing children who learn differently. Next, you meet a handful of creative neurodivergent influencers who use TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram as their canvas to paint new and vibrant portraits of what it means to be an individual who thinks and learns differently. Later, you'll meet our latest “Difference Maker,” Penn Holderness, a former TV journalist who has pivoted to YouTube where he uses humor to educate about the serious topic of embracing neurodiversity. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/a-world-of-difference/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/a-world-of-difference/support

Taking an Enneagram assessment is a great first step in learning about yourself and how you relate to others and the world. So, how do you use that information to explore who you are in relationship to your life partner? On Typology, we talk a lot about the role the Enneagram plays in how we relate to others. Over the next four weeks, we're going to focus on partnerships by reflecting on past interviews with couples on the show. These won't be straight replays. Instead, I'm going to stop at certain points and provide some commentary on how you can improve the quality of your important relationships through the Enneagram. For Annie and me, the Enneagram was probably the single most important revelation in our relationship.  It has illuminated so much for us over the years. But we would have saved a ton of time and heartache if we had a tool that explained how our specific types work against and complement each other. That's why I'm thrilled to share the new Enneagram Couples Assessment from Integrative Enneagram Solutions.  It does just that.  This new report provides a window into how you and your partner's specific Enneagram types interact, highlights the strengths each of you brings to the relationship, and identifies potential pitfalls to look out for.  Now, let's kick things off with a fresh look at my interview with Kim and Penn Holderness.  Tune in for some valuable insights into what makes their marriage work.   P.S. December 25 is a special day every year around this time, and so it's fitting that we bring you Episode 25 this holiday season. Our most recent episode features Joe and Katy Kindred of Charlotte's runaway hit restaurants Kindred and Hello, Sailor! Let us first acknowledge the return of Page's favorite podcast intro on this episode. While we will always thank our buddy Penn Holderness for whipping together the intro you've heard over the previous 24 episodes in about 39 seconds, it was the throwaway clip of Jake you just heard that will likely kick things off going forward. We're either terribly sorry, or you're very welcome. Now, on to our guests... Joe and Katy have had a mildly successful foray into restaurateurship. After long, winding careers in the industry, spanning Charlotte, Chicago and San Francisco, and then back to Charlotte, the couple launched Kindred in Davidson. To say it was a rocket ship not only in the greater Queen City-area but nationwide would be putting it mildly. Kindred hit every "Top New _____" list in 2015, and it helped transform historic downtown Davidson in the process. On the heels of this success, the couple turned their attention to Lake Norman, where they took an old, declining shore front restaurant and flipped it into Hello, Sailor. In the span of a couple of years and a few miles, the Kindreds redefined night life in greater Charlotte. Joe's the chef and Katy's the brains behind the look and feel of their businesses and brand. The two talk about how they're raising their three young children as "restaurant kids," about all of the twists and turns they endured en route to their success and about how important it is for couples to continue to date even after marriage. In fact, they were headed to grab sushi immediately following the podcast. We loved them, and we think you will too. Kim and Penn Holderness are known for their viral videos on YouTube where they sing and dance, sometimes in their Christmas Jammies. But Kim and Penn are much more than what you see in the videos. They are a dynamic, hilarious, and down-to-earth couple who came on the show today to talk about how they met, their engagement, their wedding, tips for a healthy marriage, and how to be a great guest at a wedding.  We find out, what advice would Kim and Penn give themselves, about marriage, on their wedding day 13 years ago? See you there!  If you're a wedding vendor, go get Honeybook! At A Southern Soiree, we’ve been using Honeybook since February 2015. I think we were one of their very first clients, and it has truly been a life changer. They make proposals and contracts super easy to use on both our side and the client side. I think before Honeybook I would send proposals and contracts by email, and the client would have to mail the contract to us or fax it by efax. Proposals were in no way streamlined either, so this has made our lives so much better. As a consultant, whenever I sign up a vendor client, one of the very first recommendations I make is Honeybook. No need to complicate things – it works, it’s great…just get it. And if you follow this link, you get 50% off your first year of Honeybook, which is nice, but not nearly as nice as all the time you’re going to save. And if you have any questions about my experience, feel free to send me an email to megan@weddingsforreal.com.  Music for this episode by https://www.bensound.com. On today’s show, Seth and Kevin talk to the YouTube sensation The Holderness Family. Penn and Kim Holderness talk about how they started out and grew to over 100 million views. They talk about being YouTube and Facebook influencers and monetizing their success, and what they are looking to do for future endeavors. Penn Holderness is an 18-year veteran of the TV business. Since college (UVA) he’s been a sports director in Colorado and Orlando, a TV host for Designer Finals, an ESPN Reporter, and most recently a news anchor in Raleigh. And after those 18 years, he’s decided that he isn’t really interested in about half of the things he talked about on the news. So, he quit! He now runs a video production/digital marketing company Walk West, formerly Greenroom Communications, and is using this blog to showcase the 100% of things he actually cares about. Penn is married to Kim Dean Holderness (who is also his business partner at Walk West). That means that work arguments are taken personally which has led Kim to perfect the art of passive aggressive behavior. Kim was a television news reporter, most recently at Inside Edition in New York. They have two kids, Lola and Penn Charles. They eat their vegetables, never throw tantrums in public places, and are always respectful of their parents. (THIS IS A LIE).
