It breaks my heart because I do think we've been given a gift.” (5:23—5:57)“Obviously, there are some things in dentistry you might have to do. But really, we are blessed to be able to create and change an environment that suits you. You don't have to conform to what we've been taught, especially nowadays. Nineties dentistry, you were told you drilled and filled, you referred, and you'll make a pretty good living. But now, you can make it what you want it to be.” (7:58—8:27)“A good place to start is to simply write down what it is you do like about dentistry. Now, my dad told me this story one time — he was a dentist. He's passed away now, but he never had an associate because he could never find anyone that he trusted with his patients or connected with. And I always remember this because he said he was in an interview once and he said, ‘Okay. So, tell me what you like about dentistry.' The associate said, ‘Well,...

Snoring is so common these days that some people either think it's normal or just learn to live with it, but many encounter all kinds of problems as a result of snoring, including relationships and serious health problems. When Erin Elliott began asking her dental patients how they sleep at night and whether or not they snore, she was given a lot of strange looks. That was 10 years ago when the connection between dental signs and symptoms weren't really considered to have anything to do with sleep or snoring. Today, many more dentists are acknowledging how they are intertwined and integrating this understanding into their practice. Erin Elliott is a dentist who is so well known for this that many of her patients are referred to her for snoring problems by physicians or existing patients. On today's episode, she discusses the varying causes and effects of snoring and how essential it is to identify the cause before implementing a snoring treatment, what kinds of dental signs and symptoms indicate the presence of a sleep or breathing problem, what's happening physiologically when someone snores, and so much more. By tuning in, you will discover: How and why snoring can lead to tooth decay and poor gum health Why losing weight could significantly improve snoring for one person, and not make a difference for another Surgical, therapeutic, and lifestyle changes which could help reduce snoring. How to Effectively Resolve Conflict Episode #468 with Dr. Erin Elliott Whether it's with your team or your patients, resolving conflict may not be your strong point. But you can't avoid it forever! And to help you understand, prevent, and overcome your fear of conflict in your practice, Kirk Behrendt brings back Dr. Erin Elliott, lecturer at 3D Dental, for advice on being more direct and effective when dealing with frustrated patients and team members. For the best strategies to resolve conflict, listen to Episode 468 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Don't always delegate conflict resolution to your team. Figure out the source of frustration or anger. Overcome your fear of conflict. Address conflict right away. Embrace bad reviews. Be clear, not nice. Quotes: “I was an associate, so that kind of helped [in avoiding conflict]. And having a partner does help too, because I was like, ‘Oh. Well, my partner says we can't do that.' You know, you have someone to blame it on. But I would just make a team member deal with it. I'd be like, ‘Oh, you go talk to them. I am too afraid.' And part of it is that I want to be liked. Second is, I feel like patients shouldn't feel, if they treat us crappy, that they get to have direct access to the doctor. But what I soon realized is if I do get involved sooner, then we tend to resolve it sooner.” (5:57—6:37) “Every time you point a finger at someone, you have three pointing back at you, if you think about it. And so, the first question I ask is, ‘What's my part in it?' It's a hard thing to do, especially if you have an employee that is not good. You're like, ‘Well, it's the employee. What part do I have in this?' Well, maybe you're not leading them correctly. Maybe you didn't give them a chance — whatever it is. I try to look at my part.” (8:37—9:06) “When it comes to patients, I feel like most of [the conflict] is over miscommunication — a lot of it, finances. Maybe we didn't communicate their part properly, or the expectations of the treatment and what they were going to get out of it. And in the past, I just put a team member in charge of it. My office manager, she loves the challenge of, ‘By the end, this person and I are going to be friends.' She likes that challenge. But I told her, ‘Get us involved sooner,' because it's amazing, when we get on the phone, all of a sudden, the demeanor of the patient changes. I don't know what it is about the “Dr.” in front of our name, but all of a sudden, they start behaving.” (9:08—9:59) “Not being afraid of conflict and addressing it right on or directly and coming in and admitting your part of it, humbling yourself, I think that goes a long way.” (16:17—16:35) “I would say I delegate the majority of [conflict]. [I intervene] just when after a couple phone calls, nothing's being resolved. And I think dentists are a little wimpy. We want to be liked, most of us. And then, we go into a job where everyone hates you. Right? And then, we ask for money for doing all this stuff. So, we have to not be afraid of not being liked.” (19:40—20:12) “We have this whole thing where patients like to hold us hostage with reviews. And you also can't be afraid of a bad review. If you look through mine — and I do have some — it's mostly about insurance and money, and the people usually sound totally ill-informed and ignorant. And it makes [the reviews] more real, but it still is a dagger to the heart. And I respond to every good review and every bad review and address, ‘I'm sorry that you had this experience. We strive to be clear and the best, so if you would give us a call, maybe we could discuss further.' But don't let the patient hold you hostage on a bad review.” (20:23—21:14) “Don't automatically give the money back [to unhappy patients]. That's not always what they're after.” (21:15—21:20) “What I basically do with employees, let's say they're talking too loud in the hallway, or on their cell phone too much, or whatever it is. Instead...

Dr. Gary Holtzclaw is a dentist and practice owner in Simpsonville, SC. Alan holds a special place in his hear for Gary because he was one of the very few people who attended Alan's presentation at the Dentsply Sirona World 2017. In Las Vegas. At 8am. On the topic of addiction. So let's be honest...Gary is a peach. The guys had a wide ranging conversation that could have gone on a lot longer and some of the topics they discussed are as follows: Gary indulges Al in a college marching band story because both of them were in the marching band back in the day. Gary and Al are both old school podcast listeners. (Rio 500 mp3 player in the house!) Gary and Al both share a history of buying a "diamond in the rough" kind of practice. We're not sure those kind of practices are out there much any more, but if you find one you should buy it! Gary got into Spear Education/CEREC around the time you could buy CE on DVD! Reality Ratings changed Al's dental life Gary explains his FriedRiceTacoPizza approach to immersing himself in CE and recommends others approach it a little differently. When he dove in to treating sleep apnea and airway he took courses from Erin Elliott at 3D Dental, Jamison Spencer and Jeff Rouse at Spear. All amazing teachers and courses, but they all have a little bit different approach. This made implementation much more difficult. Instructors don't realize how special they are and often how their practice is. Adults need ortho. A lot. How did Gary get in to moving teeth? In the first three years of practice try and figure out what you DON'T want to do. Gary and Al both threaten to give up a lot of procedures Experience means understanding what's a "Hail Mary" and how to explain that to a patient. Gary on newer dentists..."they're hungrier." How to Find and Keep Great People Episode #393 with Dr. Erin Elliott It's a challenge trying to find, train, and keep great people. Is all that even possible? And where do you start? To provide some answers, Kirk Behrendt brings back Dr. Erin Elliott to share how she discovered out-of-the-box solutions for those challenges in her office. A great practice needs great people. And to find them, you first need to attract the right ones! And if what you're doing isn't working, you can always do something different. For more tips on finding great people for your great practice, listen to Episode 393 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Think outside the box to attract the right people. Choose personality over experience. The dental part will come. Firing “bad patients” is one way to reduce team turnover. Eliminating phone calls may keep your team happier. Outsource the daunting and overwhelming tasks. If you're unhappy or feeling stuck, do something different. Quotes: “The big thing that T-Bone taught me is that there's absolutely no way we should be doing the dentistry that we did in dental school only.” (6:56—7:04) “I didn't think we would struggle with [finding and keeping the right people] where I live. But this whole employee thing, I still don't understand it. At the core of it, we still have the same team. We have a large team: six hygienists, five that work all at the same time, three doctors, I work with three assistants. It's kind of a scheduling — it's a lot of fun. Let's just say that. So, at the core of it, our assistants and hygienists have all stayed the same. But for some reason, front desk has been so difficult for us. And we have tons of people moving to our area. We are so booked with new patients, good quality patients, and I can't understand why there's not a workforce. But most of the people moving to our area are retired. So, we just don't have a workforce, even with all these people.” (10:52—11:44) “We're working two front desk people short right now. And just the thought of trying to find someone and train them, two new people, and then not having any dental experience, because we're trying to think outside the box, it's overwhelming, the thought of it. And when we did have someone no-show for an interview, it was like the sails were deflated. It's like, ‘What do we do now?'” (12:01—12:28) “I was answering phones, and I was like, ‘Man, I could've answered more than half of those by text.' So, here's when I was thinking outside the box. If the thought of training is overwhelming, let's outsource that. There's got to be like, ‘Here's the basics of Eaglesoft. Here's the basics of [dentistry]. You're going to sit down in our basement and watch some onboarding videos for two days before you even come upstairs,' something to take the training out of the hands of the people that are there. Because telling someone to click there, and then click there, I don't have patience for it.” (12:54—13:32) “The second [issue] was the phone calls. I'm not testing this till next week, so bear with me. But I found a service where if it rings three times and goes unanswered, it sends an automatic text from a phone number that I chose. And it just says, ‘Hey, sorry we missed your call. How can we help you?' And we can text with our patient to answer questions and eliminate phone calls. When we're working this short, the phone calls are the problem. It's like they catch up on voicemails, and then call those patients back, and then they're full of voicemails again. So, that's where I'm at. I'm trying to think outside the box, just eliminate phone calls, eliminate busywork, and let them focus on the patients that are there.” (13:34—14:26) “I think at the front, it's a constant barrage of phone calls, problems, people not being nice. I don't know if they see a place to move up there. So, I want to try to create kind of a specialty feeling amongst the front so that they have their ownership.”...

Erin stays away from home for a long time. And gets to write it off. Erin on emergency dentistry (she's got this figured out) Medical people GNF. Erin on giving patients money back. Today we welcome Dr. Erin Elliott for her second appearance here on the pod and her colleague Dr. Tarun Agarwal! Dr. Erin Elliott grew up South of Boise (i.e. Southern California) but went away to a small NAIA school in Western New York in 1995 where she played collegiate soccer and graduated summa cum laude from Houghton College. After graduating Creighton Dental School in 2003, she settled in North Idaho to begin her general dentistry career at Post Falls Family Dental. She has a special interest in DentalSleep Medicine. She has lectured extensively on this topic and loves to spread the message that sleep apnea, snoring and insomnia can be screened for in your dental office AND can be treated. She is an active member of her local American Dental Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and is the past president and a diplomate of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy. Dr. Tarun Agarwal, DDS is considered one of the top dentists in the country. He is a recognized speaker, author, and dental leader. He has been featured on CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, and News 14 Carolina. Dr. Agarwal has been awarded '40 under 40' Business Leaders by the Triangle Business Journal. He is regularly invited to teach other dentists around the world and recently built a training center within the practice dedicated to sharing his expertise. Most importantly he is a loving husband and dedicated father of three wonderful children. His biggest accolade was being voted 'Best Dad in the World' by 2 of his 3 kids. Today's episode is generously sponsored by our peeps at Phillips and their new Zoom delivered whitening kit! The demand for teeth whitening went down during the pandemic but with the world transitioning back into real life with parties and get-togethers for the upcoming holiday season, Irene has had an influx of patients at her practice asking for teeth whitening services. Finding that her inventory was low, she turned to the folks at Phillips and their Zoom delivered whitening service. All you need is to take a digital scan or impression and send it to the proprietary lab with a prescription like you would fill out for a mouth/sports guard or night guard. Phillips Zoom will then ship the whitening kit directly to your patient. Irene then created an instructional video that she could email to patients on how to use the product! Not only does this save the patient time, but it also saves the practice time and resources by not having to have the patient return to the office for the whitening treatment! It also gets the patient onboard and makes them a part of their own treatment plan. See the link below for more information on Phillips Zoom Delivered! https://www.philips.ca/c-e/pe/teeth-whitening/philips-zoom-delivered.html ------------------------------------------------------ Dr. Elliott and Dr. Agarwal share with Irene and Katrina how they met 5 years ago following a guest appearance Dr. Elliott made on another podcast that led to a small orthodontic scandal and how they have been working together ever since! They discuss the biggest challenge holding dentists back in their practice with sleep as well as how modern hygienists can bridge the gap between a patient's expectations of what a basic teeth cleaning appointment is and how to encourage them to take their treatment into their own hands. Dr. Agarwal goes on to talk about why he has implemented digital impressions in his practice, the exciting outcomes of this implementation, how many scanners he currently has in his practice, as well as the culture of his practice and how important it is to him to invest in his staff and make sure they are fully participating in the culture that he has built. They both share how they approach conversations around orthodontics with patients, and Dr. Elliott explains what Vivos is and how she feels about it. Lastly, they provide insight on the importance of the relationship between the dentist and the hygienist and tips on how a hygienist can get their dentist onboard with wok they are interested in infusing into their practice. What Holds You Back in Dentistry & Sleep? Episode #292 with Dr. Erin Elliott Maybe you want sleep and airway in your practice, but you're feeling held back. Today, Dr. Erin Elliott returns on the topic of airway with advice on how to get started! Kirk Behrendt and Dr. Elliott talk about the most common obstacles dentists face and the best practices on how to overcome them. For tips on positive thinking, staying motivated, and having confidence in your work, listen to Episode 292 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Don't let medical billing be a roadblock to doing sleep in your practice. Fear of being sued shouldn't stop you. Avoid thinking about the “what-ifs" — most of those fears never happen. Have confidence in your work. Don't let imposter syndrome hold you back. Learn how to communicate and talk to your patients and team. Always think about what's best for your patients. Don't try to do it all — delegate. Quotes: “Complexity is the enemy of implementation. And dentists do one thing really well, is overthinking and making things more difficult than they need to be.” (04:29—04:40) “I recently took a poll on the forum that I mentor on from people that have attended the course, ‘Why are you not doing as much sleep as you want to?' And number one was medical billing.” (05:35—05:49) “If you take care of the patient and do what's best for them — there are some jerks in this world. But to get to the point where you're sued, legally, it's standard of care. And it's also clinically acceptable work — you won't get sued. They have to have an expert witness in order to win. Ask me how I know, because I had to go through the process.” (09:21—09:45) “You do feel like you're behind the ball all the time. And then, of course, people only post their most amazing work, and you're like, ‘Man, I am a crappy dentist,' when really, you're getting patients out of pain, you're restoring their smile, their function. You're doing everything well, [but] you always feel like a failure. So, you've just got to get out there.” (10:48—11:11) “Don't start expecting physician referrals if you don't even know what to do with a patient when you get them.” (22:42—22:47) “It's really the team that gets things going, and I think we don't utilize them enough.” (27:37—27:40) “Stop being nice. It doesn't mean not to be nice, but it means that people are okay with you leading them. And it's not being a jerk to have certain expectations that you expect them to meet. And if you have to correct them, they have given you permission just by being your employee.” (33:59—34:24) “Just know that: (1) you know what you're doing; (2) you won't get sued; (3) take care of people, [and] you'll find satisfaction in your job.” (45:00—45:06) Snippets: Dr. Elliott's background. (02:53—07:18) Don't let your fears stop you. (08:09—12:06) Don't let imposter syndrome hold you back. (12:59—14:41) Have your “why” to keep yourself motivated. (15:21—16:19) You can't do everything yourself/the champion concept. (17:07—21:13) Other obstacles holding you back from doing sleep in your practice. (21:35—24:35) Mistakes made and lessons learned. (25:46—27:45) Have confidence in leading your team. (28:31—32:11) Heidi vs. Howard study, and the origin of the word “nice”. (32:11—39:30) Don't be easily defeated. (40:02—41:16) Dr. Elliott's sleep courses. (41:33—43:03) Dr. Elliott's contact information, website, and S1 course. (43:11—44:07) Closing. Today, Kirk Behrendt brings in Dr. Erin Elliott, who warns that sleep apnea is no longer an “old, fat man's disease.” It can affect people of all ages, shapes, and sizes — even children — and it can go undiagnosed for years. So, how can dentists help? To learn how and why you should implement sleep apnea treatment into your dental practice, listen to Episode 274 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Dentists are on the front lines for people's health. Sleep is important for overall health and wellness. Learn to screen for and treat sleep apnea. Medical insurance will pay for oral appliances. Help patients realize they need help. It will increase compliance! But don't be too pushy. Quotes: “As soon as I see someone's anatomy, I'm like, ‘You have sleep apnea,' because it's not an old, fat man's disease. And unfortunately, in America, that's how people look at it, is an old, fat man's disease. And I treat young, petite people, healthy people, all the time.” (09:33—09:49) “It's not voodoo. Oxygen is not anything crazy to get to this kid. Sleep is not crazy to want to achieve. So, I don't understand why there's so much resistance. (10:50—11:02) “The myth is that medical insurance doesn't pay for oral appliances. They do if you have the right documentation. The other myth is that they don't pay well — which is often true . . . And the third thing is that you can't do sleep without medical insurance.” (18:30—19:01) “We get people to sign up for aligners every day. Comprehensive care, cash fee, insurance doesn't help, $5,000 to $6,000. Why aren't we able to present an oral appliance that could improve the quality of their life and even extend their life for $2,500 and get them to accept treatment? And it's because people are so reliant on medical insurance . . . That's the first question they ask. They don't care about my certifications and initials after my name. Their first question is, ‘How much is it? Do you bill medical?'” (19:20—20:01) “It's the primary care, the nurse practitioners, endocrinologists, psychiatrists, marriage counselors — there are so many people that are in the trenches with people that need help — chiropractors, naturopaths. So many people need our help, and these people are exposed to them and interact with them every day. They just don't look for it and don't know what to look for. And there's some fear in the medical world because they don't know enough about the appliance. So, then, they just don't bring it up.” (23:14—23:47) “Where the medical world really misses is connecting with the patient, finding their pain points and helping them realize they need help. You'll get far more compliance when they understand the disease that we're trying to treat.” (27:52—28:07) “So many orthodontists think, ‘Oh, no. We'll just wait till they're 12.' Let's just wait till they're done growing and their sutures are sealed, and they've been sick this whole time. Why are we not expanding and intervening in growing jaws earlier? That, I'll never understand.” (30:47—31:02) “There are so many things in the way that our lifestyle of convenience exacerbates inflammation, tonsil enlargement and obligatory mouth breathing, no filtration of bacteria, ear infections. It's just a bad downward cycle, because once those tonsils are so large and they can't breathe through their nose, there's no chance to catch up.” (33:11—33:36) “Complexity is the enemy of implementation.” (45:26—45:29) Snippets: Dr. Elliott's background. (03:30—08:02) Why sleep apnea is a big topic in dentistry. (08:28—09:49) Children are often undiagnosed. (10:30—12:10) How to monetize this. (12:41—13:46) How general dentistry and sleep work together. (14:07—14:50) Having a “sleep champion” in the...

Super excited to have the chance to interview one of dentistry's most influential people in the area of sleep dentistry! However, we took a turn from most interviews Dr. Elliott has done and focused on her life as a dentist, who happens to be a female, her transition from associate to partner, how to avoid being a “princess” associate, and what her plans are for the future of her own practice! Dr. Elliott was born in Southern California and was apparently quite the athlete! She played soccer in college before heading to Creighton University for Dental School. She has a passion for treating sleep apnea and is the past president of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy. You can reach Erin at ErinElliottdds@gmail.com.
Believe it or not, folks... Dentists, Implants and Worms have made it to Episode 100! In celebration of our huge milestone episode, we decided to try out something different by featuring some of our closest friends and supporters on the show. In short, it didn't go well due to technical difficulties— mainly because the three of us are Skype newbies. (Yeah, we'll work on that.) Regardless of the "shit show" when it came to Skype, we managed to make the best of it by briefly connecting with our biggest fans: Mike Freimuth, DDS; The Dental Hacks Podcast (Alan Mead, DDS and Jason Lipscomb, DDS); Erin Elliott, DDS; Lisa Moler; The Life and Dentistry Podcast; Danny Domingue, DDS. Perhaps, even more notably, The Worm himself— John Landers, DDS— decided to grace us with his presence. I promise you there IS some dental content discussed around the 1 hour 20 minute mark (thank you Dr. Domingue). All in all though, it was a greatly entertaining podcast and I truly mean it when I say that I've never had so much fun taking around 3 hours of technical difficulties and non-sequiters and cutting it down to a super-sized (1 hour and 40 minutes) episode of Dentists, Implants and Worms. We can't thank ALL 100 of our previous guests enough. Trust us, if we were able to, we would have Skyped you all in, but as you can tell from listening to this episode, we could barely handle 8 guests, let alone 100. Here's to another 100 episodes of the podcast that navigates you through the world of dentistry, one vodka-soda at a time! Thank you for listening and supporting us, and cheers!
You may remember Erin Elliott, DDS from her previous episodes on Dentists, Implants and Worms back in June 2016 where she was in Rapid City doing a sleep apnea continued education course for Justin's staff. (Sleeping with Erin Elliott, Pt 1 and 2) Well, she's back this time via Skype from her home in Post Falls, Idaho! We've never said this to anyone else before... but Erin Elliott is our favorite guest. She may as well be called the "Queen of the Worms." How's that for an official title, Erin? Enjoy, folks! This is the podcast we've all been waiting for! We've been hyping this guest up for a few weeks now and finally, Erin Elliot, DDS has arrived. We had such a blast with her and her partner-in-crime Bri Bove that we're going to go ahead and release two parts to this episode. Yep, that's right... another two-part podcast! Dr. Elliott was out here in Rapid City, SD because she was teaching a course on sleep and how it relates to dentists. She conducted several sleep studies while she was out here and we just had to take advantage and have her on the show! Part Two will be a follow up after the course had completed. You know, for some reflection, commentary and, of course, post-course drinks. Thank you so much for being a loyal fan of our podcast and for being an amazing guest, Erin! Let's do it again! We had the pleasure of speaking to Dr. Douglas Chenin, DDS from San Francisco, California on the latest episode of Dentists, Implants and Worms. Dr. Moody has an interesting connection to Dr. Chenin— they released a DVD series together! We discuss a wide variety of topics ranging from Cone Beam Readers, orthodontics and sleep medicine. Also, there may have been a spilled drink in there somewhere. Dr. Chenin graduated from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and practiced for several years in the San Francisco Bay Area. He then started consulting with Anatomage, the creators of the Invivo5 3D imaging software and the Anatomage Surgical Guide System. He soon became Director of Clinical Affairs for the company, working with doctors all over the world to teach them about Anatomage's 3D imaging technology. He was also instrumental in the development and initial beta testing for the Anatomage Guide system. After working with Anatomage for five years, he launched his own company called Clinically Correct Inc, which focuses on CBCT education. Through Clinically Correct, he teaches everything from basic CBCT principles to advanced hands-on software training If any of our listeners have questions about Dr. Chenin or his work, please feel free to e-mail him at dougchenin@gmail.com. For more information about Anatomage Dental and Beam Readers, please visit http://dental.anatomage.com/ and https://www.beamreaders.com/ For more information about Clinically Correct, please visit https://clinicallycorrect.com/ Also, there were a couple of names mentioned that we thought we would give a shout-out to. They are: Dr. David Hatcher and Dr. Erin Elliott. Thank you for being on the show, Dr. Chenin! PS. Sorry about the spilled drinks.
