In this enlightening episode of Educator Yarns, we sit down with Aaron Johnston, recipient of the Primary School Teacher of The Year Award at the Koori Curriculum Educator Awards in 2024. Aaron, an Assistant Principal at a K-6 school on the Central Coast of NSW (Darkinjung Country), shares his profound journey of becoming an active ally for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education. From his awakening during the Black Lives Matter movement to supporting a student discovering their Aboriginal heritage, Aaron candidly discusses how his ignorance transformed into passionate advocacy. As the leader of his school's Aboriginal Education team, creator of Mr. J's Learning Space on social media, and co-host of the Teacher Takeaway podcast, Aaron demonstrates how educators can authentically embed First Nations perspectives in their pedagogy and influence their communities. This conversation offers practical insights for early childhood educators seeking to begin or deepen their journey of embedding Aboriginal perspectives in their teaching practice. Key Takeaways: Aaron's journey began with acknowledging his own ignorance about First Nations histories and cultures, highlighting the importance of personal reflection for all educators. How being approached by a family seeking to reconnect with their Aboriginal heritage became a catalyst for deeper engagement with First Nations education. Why starting small with "one authentic thing a week" provides a practical approach for educators beginning their journey of embedding Aboriginal perspectives. Consultation with First Nations educators and community members is essential before implementing Aboriginal education initiatives. Supporting children's cultural identity and sense of belonging should be a central focus, particularly for Aboriginal children who may be disconnected from their culture. Reciprocity in relationships with First Nations educators and communities creates sustainable partnerships. Children's literature, such as "Sorry Day" and "Walking Together" by Coral Vass and Dub Leffler, offers accessible entry points for teaching complex historical topics. Social media platforms can be powerful tools for amplifying First Nations voices and sharing practical educational resources. School leadership positions provide opportunities to champion Aboriginal education across entire school communities. The importance of breaking cycles of ignorance to ensure future generations grow up with knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal cultures. Aaron Johnston's journey from a place of acknowledged ignorance to becoming a recognised ally in Aboriginal education offers a powerful model for educators across Australia. His practical approach emphasises starting small, building genuine relationships, seeking guidance from First Nations educators, and consistently working to amplify Aboriginal voices and perspectives. Whether you're just beginning your journey or looking to deepen your practice, this episode provides valuable insights and practical strategies. Listen now to be inspired and equipped to make meaningful changes in your educational setting that honour and celebrate the world's oldest living cultures. Access the episode resources here.

Is SDSU vs UConn the biggest sporting event in the history of South Dakota State — and maybe even the state of South Dakota — considering the Jackrabbits' opponent, the stakes, and the national stage this game is on?Yes, there have been football FBS national titles and Div. II men's and women's national titles, plus other matchups with big-name, top-notch big league schools in the big sports. But this is the all-time women's national program (record 11 titles), still coached by the inarguable best (or most decorated) coaching titan of the entire sport, in the NCAA Tournament, not just a November or December non-conference game. This is Geno Auriemma and Paige Bueckers in the NCAA Tournaand a No. 2 seed that could win the national title!Matt Zimmer is there to talk about how historically relevant Monday night's game is, what kind of chances the Jackrabbits have, and how SDSU socred a satisfying but not necessarily surprising Jacks win over Oklahoma State on Saturday.Plenty of comparisons between the SDSU and UConn programs and coaches, and plenty of insight into some of the things Auriemma and Aaron Johnston and SDSU players had to say in his Sunday pre-game press conference, attended mostly by South Dakoa media.Would a victory be the greatest moment in South Dakota State athletics history — if not in state of South Dakota history. So much big game to discuss!

On the 500th Anniversary of one of the most pivotable battles of the Great Italian Wars, what better to do that a deep dive into the battle of Pavia, with a specific slant on recreating the battle on the tabletop. I'm joined by Martyn Kelly who has last on the show 2 years ago. He is well known for his exquisite Big Games at Historicon in the US and this year he will be putting on a huge recreation of the Italian Wars classic. Neither Martyn or myself are historians, just enthusiastic wargamers, we give our own briefing introduction on the history of the battle before moving on to a deep dive on the orders of battle and figures used in Martyns game. After that we talk about the terrain for the battle and how that is recreated in miniature before eventually getting to the battle itself and how that presents challenges on the tabletop. Martyn has an excellent blog College of Kings on which he posts updates on the project. https://www.collegeofkings.com/ Please like, subscribe and leave a review wherever you see the show. I'll be back in a couple of weeks when I will be talking to Aaron Johnston who works for the Battle of Prestonpans Trust and runs the What If, 1745 Jacobite Campaign on the YouTube. The road to the NCAA Basketball Tournament once again runs through Sioux Falls. For the first time in a handful of years, the Summit League men's tournament is wide open. After back to back years where a team was unbeaten in the regular season, South Dakota State won the league this year losing four times. North Dakota State enters with its lowest seed in six years, the Bison are seeded fifth after losing their final two games of the regular season. NDSU will face St. Thomas Sunday at 6 p.m. The Bison split the season series with the Tommies, including a 64-50 win in Fargo on February 22. North Dakota comes to Sioux Falls with the highest seed the Fighting Hawks have ever earned as a member of the Summit League. UND finished third and will take on Omaha Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. Paul Sather's team swept the season series from the Mavericks. The women's side sees SDSU return as the top seed after a second consecutive unbeaten season. Aaron Johnston's team has been beset by injuries, but yet the Jacks finished 16-0 in league play. Jory Collins team comes to Sioux Falls as the second seed for the second straight year. It was a disappointment last year as the Bison lost in the opening round to seventh-seeded Kansas City in the opening round. This year's Bison are led by all-Summit first-team member Elle Evans, who was also selected to the defensive team. NDSU has earned the most wins in the Division I era and seems primed for a run to Tuesday's championship. The Forum's Jeff Kolpack and WDAY's Dom Izzo offer their thoughts on the tournament and what to expect over the next few days.
