Some people move to Pine Island. Others become part of its heart. In this week's episode, we sit down with Elsie Stearns, Vice President and Sr. Branch Manager of Centennial Bank on Pine Island, to hear the story of how a young woman from the city fell in love with island life — and spent decades giving back to the community she came to love. Elsie shares memories of arriving on Useppa Island in 1977, building a life and family here with her husband Scott, and serving Pine Island through both her banking career and years of community leadership. From Beacon of Hope to the Bobby Holloway Foundation to the Fire Commission, Elsie has quietly helped shape this island in ways that have touched countless lives. Her story is heartfelt, inspiring, and full of the kind of island history and spirit we love to share. ✨ “Scott and I just fell in love with the island my first day there… I give Mel Meo credit for making me an island girl.” — Elsie Stearns

Pine Island, Minnesota is the kind of idyllic Midwestern farm town that most people picture when they think of anywhere in the middle of the country: friendly people, a strong sense of community, and civic pride. The town also had one other fixture that used to be common in every little town in the Midwest: an Odd Fellows lodge. Unfortunately, the lodge had fallen on hard times. Membership was low and the building was falling apart. Evan Goranson and David Friese stepped in about a year and a half ago and started turning things around. Sometimes that job was fun and easy, like getting people interested in sorting through old treasures in the building. Sometimes it was more of a challenge than they wanted, like dealing with a leaking toilet. Through it all, the lodge is prospering and starting to grow, having reconnected with its community. The progress is significant and shows that with the right combination of new members, guidance from the Grand Lodge, and a can-do attitude, a lodge can be revived and start to thrive. The Shoutout goes to a new lodge in Tennessee, Crockett Hall Lodge #59. In this episode's Odd Podge, Meredith previews a special parade inclusion for the upcoming Pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Ainslie shares another somber memorial service in Illinois, Evan expresses excitement for the first day over 70 degrees Farenheit for Minnesota and Wisconsin, David expresses gratitude both for the nine candidates poised to join his lodge and for being able to talk about it on the podcast, and Toby recounts his conversation with a Chief Patriarch about how to make his Encampment more interesting for its members.

Scientists just made an incredible discovery in Antarctica—they found Pine Island amber, a super rare type of fossilized tree resin! This amber is millions of years old and could hold clues about ancient ecosystems that once thrived on the frozen continent. Imagine finding tiny prehistoric insects or pollen trapped inside, perfectly preserved from a time when Antarctica was much warmer. This discovery could rewrite what we know about Earth's climate history and how plants and animals adapted to extreme changes. Scientists are now carefully studying the amber to uncover its secrets. Season six kicks off in Grand—or, should we say—Sovereign Grand style! We recorded this episode of the podcast live from the historic hall of Kanawha Lodge #25 of Charleston, West Viriginia, host of the 2025 Sovereign Grand Lodge Session. We were joined by a wonderful live audience and guests who told us about what's going on in their jurisdictions. We heard about a tiny lodge in Rhode Island that suddenly had an influx of members, the growth of Encampments and Cantons in Texas, a roundabout way of getting the mayor of Pine Island, Minnesota to join that town's lodge, and many more great and inspiring stories from around Odd Fellowship. In the Odd Podge, Ainslie talked about how Thomas Wildey had to place several advertisements in the newspaper in Baltimore before he was able to round up enough Odd Fellows to form a lodge (and he also gave a great plug to Mike's new book Oddtistic); Mike announced his new podcast "Odd Fellows Today" again; and Toby shared why he comes to Sovereign Grand Lodge even without a job to do. Hint: it's all about all of you listeners out there!
