Andrew Schmidt joins Colter Nuanez to talk about Griz quarterback Keali'i Ah Yat leading the FCS in passing yards....how did this happen? For those that say it's because of weak competition for Montana, well, everyone is weak competition compared to the Griz, Montana State and North Dakota State. Plus, a review of Andrew's favorite sandwiches and much more!
Ty Gregorak, a 15-year coaching veteran in the Big Sky Conference and now the color commentator for Scripps Sports, joins Colter Nuanez to talk about the rare air Montana State, Montana and North Dakota State occupy compared to the rest of the FCS. Plus, Gregorak gives his thoughts on the strengths of the Montana State defense as the Cats enter the stretch run of 2025.
NOTICE: This weekly show is now part of the "Happy Hour with John Gaskins" daily podcast, which you can find at SiouxFallsLive.com, MidwestSportsPlus.com, and most podcast platforms like the one you find here! So, if you enjoy the topics Matt & John cover, you'll get those topics, plus relevant local guests, every Monday through Thursday on Happy Hour... so we highly recommend you check that out! You can see it in the changing color of the leaves, and then how quickly they are falling off the trees. You can feel it in the chill of the air in the mornings, evenings, and sometimes all day. As November — which for those of us up here in the north means early winter — nears, the weather and ever-shedding trees represent the cold, harsh reality of winter drawing near, and the cold, harsh reality of some football teams' goals slipping away. South Dakota State no longer looks like a national title contender, at least in the health they are in. North Dakota State exposed that. South Dakota not only no longer looks like a national title contender they were projected to be by most FCS experts in the preseason, the Coyotes look less and less like even an FCS playoffs team. Their failure to score more than 20 points in all but three of nine games exposed that. But that's how things look now. Both the Jackrabbits and Coytes have November to change those narratives — four regulasr seaosn games each to flip the script. The margin of error is slimmer for both. The depth of both teams is thinning, too (as injuries tend to smother all teams at all levels by this time of year). On a cold day requiring flannel for John Gaskins and a hooded sweatshirt for Matt Zimmer, the two "Nobody's Listening Anyway" hosts require just a tiny extra dose of alcoholic nourishment to adjust to the temperatures and impending winter, not to mention to digest and unpack both what the SDSU and USD seasons have become and still could be. The cold, harsh reality of the Jacks is the kind of players that led them to national titles in 2022 and '23 — Mark Gronowski, Tucker Kraft, Isaiah Davis, Pierre Strong, the Janke twins, and a host of pro-level 605 Hogs and defenders — are not walking through that door, and the injuries of Chase Mason, Lofton O'Groske and Chase Van Tol made winning an MVFC of national title even harder. But, does that mean the Jacks' chances of accomplishing something special with a brand new coaching staff and mostly-turned-over roster are toast? The cold, harsh reality of the Yotes is they struggle to score points, which makes it hard to win games against teams that aren't the worst in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Presumably, USD must beat three consecutive top-tier league teams to reach the playoffs. But does that mean we can stick a fork in the chances of a third consecutive postseason berth in Vermillion? Fire up the Budweiser and add a shot of Rumple Minze. There's a lot of brutal reality football to talk about, and that includes the latest bumpy ride Kalen DeBoer's Alabama took in the SEC, the make-you-hurl Brian Kelly experience at LSU that is mercifully over, and the broader conversation of all these major college teams sending their head coaches packing — with suitcases full of dozens of millions of dollars in buyout money — before the leaves start falling. Zim and John cover all that, plus the surest sign that autumn is ending: The World Series, state football playoffs, and Halloween. Is Shohei Ohtani already the greatest baseball player of all time? Are Brandon Valley and Lincoln on a collision course for back-to-back meetings in the Dakota Dome in Mid-November? Should an almost 50-year-old man still be dressing up for Halloween? You'll hear the answers, but spoiler alert — like the local college football discussions, it's complicated.

So, if you enjoy the topics Matt & John cover, you'll get those topics, plus relevant local guests, every Monday through Thursday on Happy Hour... so we highly recommend you check that out! Forgive us for not taking it "one game at a time" like coaches always preach.Even in today's modern college football world of just about anything unimaginable happening — Indiana vaulting to a No. 3 ranking two years after being dog meat, Jimmy Rogers and his 33-point underdog "Washington State Jackrabbits" almost beating No. 4 Ole Miss — many football fans in the Dakotas are already looking ahead to next week. While No. 1 North Dakota State and No. 2 South Dakota State hunker down for road games at perennial MVFC doormats Indiana State and Murray State on Saturday, "Nobody's Listening Anyway" hosts John Gaskins and Matt Zimmer dare compare the FCS big dogs' resumes and opine on how ready the seemingly vunerable Jacks are for the seemingly teflon Bison.Specifically, is the "bust" part of the boom-or-bust SDSU offense concerning if not alarming? Will the return of top wideout Lofton O'Groske erase those concerns? At the top of many fans' minds is the potential return of ESPN's College Gameday to Brookings for the Dakota Marker Game? Is the breathless lunging at the Mother Ship on social media worth it? Well, yeah, considering the vivid and fun memories that Zim shares of the crew's broadcast the morning of this matchup in 2019. This leads into a discussion about the merits and misery of watching Pat McAfee, or of being co-host A.J. Hawk on McAfee's daily show. After that sidetrack, a discussion about the emergence of freshman quarterbacks at both Augustana and USF — Rich Lucero, Jr., and Tate Schafer. Then, about USD and its ugly but effective 19-14 win at Indiana State and if the Coyotes' clear establishment of their identity is serving them well enough to for monster final month of showdowns against Top 25 Valley teams. Finally, what does Zim make of the Matt Rhule era at Nebraska now that the end may be near, with speculation he's a top candidate for the Penn State opening and the former PSU linebacker expressing unabashed love for both institutions upon being asked about the position on Monday.

Missouri Valley Conference football play starts with a bang. We think.No. 17 South Dakota's visit to No. 1 North Dakota State was a definite Top 5 "circle this on the calendar" in the offseason, considering the Coyotes' "we have arrived" comeback win over in last season's finale to share the MVFC title with the Bison and South Dakota State. Plus, perhaps you remember, USD beat NDSU the last time the teams played in Fargo. Yeah, you probably remember. The Bison sure do, and they've had an extra week to prepare for revenge (perhaps you heard). But considering USD's slippery 1-2 start before a resounding win over Drake on Saturday, how loud of a bang is this 2025 MVFC opener?Happy Hour host John Gaskins and Sioux Falls Live sports editor Matt Zimmer describe their interest and intrigue in the game, and how competitive we should expect the Coyotes to be. Is the Aidan Bouman that at times torched the Bison back after a slow 2025 start? Can we really be impressed, or the Yotes intimidated, by NDSU's 139-17 obliteration of their three opponents and their combined 3-8 record — The Citadel (1-3), Tennessee State (1-2), and Southeast Missouri State (1-3)?The attention then turns to a "what to look for" discussion on No. 2 SDSU against Mercyhurst after its bye week. Plus, of course, a scratching of the mosquito bite that is "how do we compare SDSU and USD after they each hosted Drake in back-to-back games?"What does Carson Wentz have to do to threaten J.J. McCarthy's starting job with the Vikings once McCarthy is healthy enough to play? Or should it be McCarthy's job no matter what? And, did you catch the NFL Today's 50th anniversary show featuring orgininal host Brent Musberger? One of our two hosts did and gave his review. This leads us down the rabbit hole of the NFL's most famous broadcasters of the last 50 years and how fair of evaluation they get from viewers (we're talking about you Joe Buck, one of the most hated men in Minnesota). Finally, some baseball. Zim thinks the Canaries "choked" away their first American Association championship in 17 years. Is that fair? The two dig in, plus look forward to a possible Birds follow-up run. How difficult will it be? Who should we expect back in Sioux Falls to try?Finally... Zim thought "The Natural" sucked.

You get hired to get fired. That has become the new old adage in modern day, big business college and pro sports for coaches and managers. After seven seasons, three playoff appearances, and the first playoff series win in over 20 years, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli became the latest casualty of this concept. Was it warranted? Is he the "fall guy?"Is it best the Twins move on even if Rocco is quite clearly not the primary reason for the sad state of affairs at Target Field? Beyond asinine ownership, what else besides Baldelli can we blame for the sinking ship the Twins became the last couple years?Speaking of sinking ships, has a bruised and battered Minnesota Vikings offensive line given enough reason to already believe this could be a lost season, or can a quarterback — either J.J. McCarty or Carson Wentz — and an all-of-a-sudden leaky defense keep NFC North title and even Super Bowl hopes afloat? In a monster week of football for the city of Sioux Falls and South Dakota's two Div. I teams, Happy Hour host John Gaskins and Sioux Falls Live sports editor Matt Zimmer lead off with these pressing Minnesota matters. Then, it is time to pick apart the South Dakota Coyotes' latest ugly loss in a revealing "measuring stick game" at No. 1 North Dakota State. Just like Monday's episode with Kurtiss Riggs, John and Matt try best to answer this question now that the 2025 season is about one-third in the books:With both the Jackrabbits and Coyotes losing head coaches, assistants & a bunch of their best players from top 5 teams in 2024, how and why have the Jacks remained national championship contenders (so it appears) while the Yotes have fallen off the radar (and out of the Top 25 rankings)?Meanwhile, Augustana will take its No. 8 ranking and 5-0 record across Sioux Falls to Bob Young Field on Saturday against now-unranked University of Sioux Falls (3-2) in the Key to the City Game. While the Vikings have the better record and momentum — the Cougars have lost back-to-back games in convincing fashion to Top 15-rated Duluth and Mankato — why does Zim feel the Coo have the advantage, and not just because USF has home field advantage? Finally, a preview of the most-anticipated game in South Dakota 11AAA high school football so far — No. 1 Lincoln at No. 2 Brandon Valley on Friday, a game you'll be able to watch on the Midwest Sports Plus app or at MidwestSportsPlus.com, where you can also download the app and start your 30-day free trial.

The conversation spirals into side-splitting tangents, from Opie's tales of getting sloshed on Kahlua at a pumpkin patch to Carl's wild stories of suburban gossip involving a “perfect mom” and a garbage man. They riff on the absurdity of pumpkin spice everything, the chemical-laden flavors, and the futility of chasing the “perfect” pumpkin. The duo also shares colorful anecdotes about their past, including Carl's beachside escapades under a lifeboat and encounters with quirky romantic prospects. Recorded in their new Westwood One lounge, complete with a North Dakota State poster and a fridge, the episode is a chaotic blend of humor, nostalgia, and raw storytelling, touching on everything from yoga pants to bizarre romantic kinks, all delivered with their signature irreverent chemistry.
This week on Inside the Headset – Presented by CoachComm, we're joined by Grant Olson, Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at North Dakota State University. Coach Olson shares his journey from student assistant to defensive coordinator at his alma mater, with lessons learned at Wyoming and Indiana State, the influence of NDSU's coaching tradition, and the honor of being selected for the AFCA 35 Under 35 program.
Former Montana State player and coach Michael Rider is back for another season breaking down all things Bobcat football with Colter Nuanez of Skyline Sports. Montana State opens its 2025 season in Eugene against the No. 7 Oregon Ducks on Saturday. The Bobcats went 15-1 but lost their final game of 2024 in the FCS national title game, falling 35-32 to North Dakota State.
Will Saturday be another story of the "farm kids" from South Dakota being underestimated by a bunch of thoroughbred athletes from California? The Dan Jackson Era and Chase Mason era at South Dakota State opens with a likely sold-out home game against Sacramento State, a 3-9 team from last year with over 50 FBS transfers and a brand new coach that is rated No. 15 in the preseason polls. With so many new starters on each side, it is tough to accurately predict how the game may unfold, but Sioux Falls Live sports editor and decade-long SDSU reporter Matt Zimmer takes a stab with Happy Hour host John Gaskins in a 74-minute chat over cocktails at Gateway Lounge. But Zim pulls from over 20 years of covering South Dakota college football teams who lock horns with talented rosters from talent-rich states like California, while also unveiling some new Jackrabbits FBS transfers you should expect to see and maybe shine on Saturday and all season long. What exactly can we expect, especially from SDSU's new starting quarterback, Chase Mason, who has undeniably supreme physical talent but has not played a full game as a starting signal caller in six years, back to his junior year in high school?Meanwhile, No. 4 South Dakota opens 2025 at FBS No. 22 Iowa State, who impressively finished a 24-21 prize fight win over No. 17 Kansas State in Ireland on Saturday. How much of a factor will jet lag from a trip to Ireland factor in USD's favor, not to mention this being a "sandwich" game for the Cyclones between rivals KSU and Iowa (next week)? What kind of upset threat can USD mount, with its own litany of transfer replacements but also with a guiding light in senior quarterback in Aidan Bouman, a former Cyclone with plenty to prove against his former team and NFL scouts?Plus, a glimpse into the "Washington State Jackrabbits," led by former SDSU coach Jimmy Rogers, who brought his staff and 16 players with him to the Palouse. The Cougars, who play Idaho on national television late Saturday, have shut down practices to the media after reported inner-team practice scuffles.Speaking of former Jacks, quarterback Mark Gronowski is Iowa's "Million Dollar Man" (or $2 Million Man, depending on who you believe). What should we expect of the former Walter Payton Award winner in the stacked Big Ten, and in what way will life be more different and difficult for him compared to the FCS?Then, there's No. 8 Alabama, led by former USF coach Kalen DeBoer, who starts his second season on the road at Florida State. Why should there be reason for the Crimson Tide to improve after their first four-loss season in 17 years? Finally, how much more secure should the Minnesota Vikings feel about their QB2 situation now that they dumped Sam Howell and made room for North Dakota State legend Carson Wentz, who joins his sixth NFL team in six years?
Montana State opens its 2025 football campaign at No. 7 Oregon in Eugene on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats are coming off a 15-1 season that ended with a 35-32 loss to North Dakota State in the FCS national title game. MSU fifth-year head coach Brent Vigen hosted his first press conference of the season on Monday.
Griffin Warner and Lonte Smith dive into CFB Week 0. Week Zero of the college football season always feels like a strange appetizer, a slate that is light on the number of games but heavy on storylines, betting intrigue, and fan chatter. This year the action opens overseas with Iowa State and Kansas State meeting in Dublin for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. It is a neutral-site matchup, a clash of Big 12 rivals being played far from home in a stadium more accustomed to soccer than Saturday gridiron. Iowa State has enjoyed recent dominance in the series, winning four of the last five, but Kansas State enters as a three-point favorite with a stronger defensive front and the potential breakout of quarterback Avery Johnson in a tempo-driven system. Rocco Beck threw for 3,500 yards last season but lost his two best targets to the NFL, and Matt Campbell's team feels due for regression after an 11-3 campaign. Some see value on Kansas State to cover, while others eye the under at fifty given the travel, the surface, and the potential for sloppy execution early. Later in the afternoon Kansas christens its new stadium with a visit from Fresno State, a matchup that has already seen line movement from fourteen down to twelve and a half. The Jayhawks return quarterback Jalen Daniels, whose health has long been a question, and welcome new defensive coordinator D.K. McDonald. Kansas finished strong last year and will have the benefit of a true home environment after a season of displacement. Fresno State is rebuilding under Matt Entz, the North Dakota State coach with a sterling FCS record now testing himself at the FBS level. With new coordinators, a new quarterback in EJ Warner, and the loss of most of last year's offensive stars, the Bulldogs face a tall order. Many bettors trust Kansas to handle business at home, though the total has dropped with expectations of more ball control on both sides. Sam Houston State and Western Kentucky offer a different style of entertainment, with points expected in bunches. The Bearkats bring in Phil Longo to reshape their offense, but it may take more than an offseason to get the scheme working with the current roster. Western Kentucky has become synonymous with explosive passing attacks, and even with a new offensive coordinator the Hilltoppers appear loaded for another high-flying year. Maverick McIver arrives with his play-caller from Abilene Christian, and the line has climbed from seven and a half to double digits. The sharper angle might be Western Kentucky in the first half, laying six and a half before late backdoor scenarios creep in. The finale is the traditional late-night Hawaii game, this time with Stanford crossing the Pacific under interim coach Frank Reich. The Cardinal are in disarray, with Andrew Luck now functioning in a front office role, an entirely new staff, and very little proven talent outside a few safeties. Hawaii, meanwhile, brings back thirteen starters, excitement around quarterback Micah Alejandro after his 500-yard debut, and an upgraded receiving corps that even includes a Stanford transfer. The line has flipped from Stanford favored to Hawaii by two, with bettors trusting the Warriors' continuity and island home field. With Stanford unsettled and Hawaii motivated, many expect the Rainbow Warriors to control the matchup. Week Zero is quirky, often sharp with numbers that have been posted for months, but it provides the first chance to analyze real action and measure offseason narratives. Kansas State versus Iowa State in Dublin sets the tone, Kansas and Fresno showcase new beginnings in Lawrence, Western Kentucky promises fireworks against Sam Houston, and Hawaii gets its chance to shine against a fallen Stanford. Best bets circle around Kansas State laying three and the under in that opener, but as always the debate will rage across forums and living rooms as fans celebrate the return of college football and the long march toward a new season of Saturdays. He's joined by Forum sports writers Jeff Kolpack and Eric Peterson, and WDAY-TV sports personality Dom Izzo to hash over Mike's selections, particulary his No. 1 choice of the Bison's 2007 victory at Minnesota. Kolpack, Peterson and Izzo all have ideas about what games should be at the top and why they agree or differ from Mike. Which game would you pick? Do you agree with Mike's selection, or do you lean toward another game?

Before we look ahead to a rapidly-approaching 2025 football season, a look back — over beers and with a background of classic country music at the Gateway Lounge, of course — at pop culture titans from our youth who left us this past week.Gen X'ers John Gaskins and Matt Zimmer put the latest local sports buzz on hold for a bit to reminisce about the essence of Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer Ozzy Osborne, Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, WWE GOAT Hulk Hogan, and "Cosby Show" heart throb Malcolm Jamal-Warner (Theo Huxtable). They all died this past week, and their legacies are all in the wheelhouse of the two hosts.John and Zim next look back on last week's MVFC Media Days. Zim's biggest takeaway was the response and tone of North Dakota State head coach Tim Polasek regarding one particular touchy topic affecting all FCS teams in 2025. Plus, what do we make of the health of the league, with a currently clear two-tier system — The Big 3 of NDSU, SDSU, and USD... and then everyone else? Then, a look back at the short-lived but memorable tenure of South Dakota State running back Nate White, the Wisconson transfer who made an instant impact on the practice field and instant friends in the locker room before his tragic death in his sleep at the age of 20 last month.White's now-well-documented happy time in Brookings is a testament to the culture fostered within the Jackrabbit program over the last 20 years, a feature also well-established with the Sioux Falls Canaries. While "culture" and "family" are attainable cliches in prep and college sports, they are difficult to come by in minor league baseball. But the Birds clearly have it with manager Mike Meyer in a season that is escalating into a bonfire of big offense and big wins. How and why did the inferno grow? Finally, now that it is obvious the Minnesota Twins aren't championship contenders, what moves should the front office make for an organization that is for sale, but not in the bottom of the barrel?
North Dakota State head coach Tim Polasek joins 365 Sports to talk about the DNA of Bison football and what it takes to uphold one of the most dominant programs in FCS history. Polasek dives into the culture of accountability, the influence of mentors like Craig Bohl and Chris Klieman, and how NDSU balances tradition with evolving challenges like the transfer portal and NIL.
