Former Montana State player and coach Michael Rider is back for another season breaking down all things Bobcat football with Colter Nuanez of Skyline Sports. Montana State opens its 2025 season in Eugene against the No. 7 Oregon Ducks on Saturday. The Bobcats went 15-1 but lost their final game of 2024 in the FCS national title game, falling 35-32 to North Dakota State.
Will Saturday be another story of the "farm kids" from South Dakota being underestimated by a bunch of thoroughbred athletes from California? The Dan Jackson Era and Chase Mason era at South Dakota State opens with a likely sold-out home game against Sacramento State, a 3-9 team from last year with over 50 FBS transfers and a brand new coach that is rated No. 15 in the preseason polls. With so many new starters on each side, it is tough to accurately predict how the game may unfold, but Sioux Falls Live sports editor and decade-long SDSU reporter Matt Zimmer takes a stab with Happy Hour host John Gaskins in a 74-minute chat over cocktails at Gateway Lounge. But Zim pulls from over 20 years of covering South Dakota college football teams who lock horns with talented rosters from talent-rich states like California, while also unveiling some new Jackrabbits FBS transfers you should expect to see and maybe shine on Saturday and all season long. What exactly can we expect, especially from SDSU's new starting quarterback, Chase Mason, who has undeniably supreme physical talent but has not played a full game as a starting signal caller in six years, back to his junior year in high school?Meanwhile, No. 4 South Dakota opens 2025 at FBS No. 22 Iowa State, who impressively finished a 24-21 prize fight win over No. 17 Kansas State in Ireland on Saturday. How much of a factor will jet lag from a trip to Ireland factor in USD's favor, not to mention this being a "sandwich" game for the Cyclones between rivals KSU and Iowa (next week)? What kind of upset threat can USD mount, with its own litany of transfer replacements but also with a guiding light in senior quarterback in Aidan Bouman, a former Cyclone with plenty to prove against his former team and NFL scouts?Plus, a glimpse into the "Washington State Jackrabbits," led by former SDSU coach Jimmy Rogers, who brought his staff and 16 players with him to the Palouse. The Cougars, who play Idaho on national television late Saturday, have shut down practices to the media after reported inner-team practice scuffles.Speaking of former Jacks, quarterback Mark Gronowski is Iowa's "Million Dollar Man" (or $2 Million Man, depending on who you believe). What should we expect of the former Walter Payton Award winner in the stacked Big Ten, and in what way will life be more different and difficult for him compared to the FCS?Then, there's No. 8 Alabama, led by former USF coach Kalen DeBoer, who starts his second season on the road at Florida State. Why should there be reason for the Crimson Tide to improve after their first four-loss season in 17 years? Finally, how much more secure should the Minnesota Vikings feel about their QB2 situation now that they dumped Sam Howell and made room for North Dakota State legend Carson Wentz, who joins his sixth NFL team in six years?
Montana State opens its 2025 football campaign at No. 7 Oregon in Eugene on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats are coming off a 15-1 season that ended with a 35-32 loss to North Dakota State in the FCS national title game. MSU fifth-year head coach Brent Vigen hosted his first press conference of the season on Monday.
Griffin Warner and Lonte Smith dive into CFB Week 0. Week Zero of the college football season always feels like a strange appetizer, a slate that is light on the number of games but heavy on storylines, betting intrigue, and fan chatter. This year the action opens overseas with Iowa State and Kansas State meeting in Dublin for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. It is a neutral-site matchup, a clash of Big 12 rivals being played far from home in a stadium more accustomed to soccer than Saturday gridiron. Iowa State has enjoyed recent dominance in the series, winning four of the last five, but Kansas State enters as a three-point favorite with a stronger defensive front and the potential breakout of quarterback Avery Johnson in a tempo-driven system. Rocco Beck threw for 3,500 yards last season but lost his two best targets to the NFL, and Matt Campbell's team feels due for regression after an 11-3 campaign. Some see value on Kansas State to cover, while others eye the under at fifty given the travel, the surface, and the potential for sloppy execution early. Later in the afternoon Kansas christens its new stadium with a visit from Fresno State, a matchup that has already seen line movement from fourteen down to twelve and a half. The Jayhawks return quarterback Jalen Daniels, whose health has long been a question, and welcome new defensive coordinator D.K. McDonald. Kansas finished strong last year and will have the benefit of a true home environment after a season of displacement. Fresno State is rebuilding under Matt Entz, the North Dakota State coach with a sterling FCS record now testing himself at the FBS level. With new coordinators, a new quarterback in EJ Warner, and the loss of most of last year's offensive stars, the Bulldogs face a tall order. Many bettors trust Kansas to handle business at home, though the total has dropped with expectations of more ball control on both sides. Sam Houston State and Western Kentucky offer a different style of entertainment, with points expected in bunches. The Bearkats bring in Phil Longo to reshape their offense, but it may take more than an offseason to get the scheme working with the current roster. Western Kentucky has become synonymous with explosive passing attacks, and even with a new offensive coordinator the Hilltoppers appear loaded for another high-flying year. Maverick McIver arrives with his play-caller from Abilene Christian, and the line has climbed from seven and a half to double digits. The sharper angle might be Western Kentucky in the first half, laying six and a half before late backdoor scenarios creep in. The finale is the traditional late-night Hawaii game, this time with Stanford crossing the Pacific under interim coach Frank Reich. The Cardinal are in disarray, with Andrew Luck now functioning in a front office role, an entirely new staff, and very little proven talent outside a few safeties. Hawaii, meanwhile, brings back thirteen starters, excitement around quarterback Micah Alejandro after his 500-yard debut, and an upgraded receiving corps that even includes a Stanford transfer. The line has flipped from Stanford favored to Hawaii by two, with bettors trusting the Warriors' continuity and island home field. With Stanford unsettled and Hawaii motivated, many expect the Rainbow Warriors to control the matchup. Week Zero is quirky, often sharp with numbers that have been posted for months, but it provides the first chance to analyze real action and measure offseason narratives. Kansas State versus Iowa State in Dublin sets the tone, Kansas and Fresno showcase new beginnings in Lawrence, Western Kentucky promises fireworks against Sam Houston, and Hawaii gets its chance to shine against a fallen Stanford. Best bets circle around Kansas State laying three and the under in that opener, but as always the debate will rage across forums and living rooms as fans celebrate the return of college football and the long march toward a new season of Saturdays. Forum columnist Mike McFeely discusses and debates his ranking of North Dakota State's top 75 games since the program joined the Football Championship Subdivision. He's joined by Forum sports writers Jeff Kolpack and Eric Peterson, and WDAY-TV sports personality Dom Izzo to hash over Mike's selections, particulary his No. 1 choice of the Bison's 2007 victory at Minnesota. Kolpack, Peterson and Izzo all have ideas about what games should be at the top and why they agree or differ from Mike. Which game would you pick? Do you agree with Mike's selection, or do you lean toward another game?

Before we look ahead to a rapidly-approaching 2025 football season, a look back — over beers and with a background of classic country music at the Gateway Lounge, of course — at pop culture titans from our youth who left us this past week.Gen X'ers John Gaskins and Matt Zimmer put the latest local sports buzz on hold for a bit to reminisce about the essence of Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer Ozzy Osborne, Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, WWE GOAT Hulk Hogan, and "Cosby Show" heart throb Malcolm Jamal-Warner (Theo Huxtable). They all died this past week, and their legacies are all in the wheelhouse of the two hosts.John and Zim next look back on last week's MVFC Media Days. Zim's biggest takeaway was the response and tone of North Dakota State head coach Tim Polasek regarding one particular touchy topic affecting all FCS teams in 2025. Plus, what do we make of the health of the league, with a currently clear two-tier system — The Big 3 of NDSU, SDSU, and USD... and then everyone else? Then, a look back at the short-lived but memorable tenure of South Dakota State running back Nate White, the Wisconson transfer who made an instant impact on the practice field and instant friends in the locker room before his tragic death in his sleep at the age of 20 last month.White's now-well-documented happy time in Brookings is a testament to the culture fostered within the Jackrabbit program over the last 20 years, a feature also well-established with the Sioux Falls Canaries. While "culture" and "family" are attainable cliches in prep and college sports, they are difficult to come by in minor league baseball. But the Birds clearly have it with manager Mike Meyer in a season that is escalating into a bonfire of big offense and big wins. How and why did the inferno grow? Finally, now that it is obvious the Minnesota Twins aren't championship contenders, what moves should the front office make for an organization that is for sale, but not in the bottom of the barrel?
North Dakota State head coach Tim Polasek joins 365 Sports to talk about the DNA of Bison football and what it takes to uphold one of the most dominant programs in FCS history. Polasek dives into the culture of accountability, the influence of mentors like Craig Bohl and Chris Klieman, and how NDSU balances tradition with evolving challenges like the transfer portal and NIL. A former cornerback for North Dakota State University (NDSU) from 2005-2009, Rich Bowman was part of a Bison defense that led the FCS in pass defense and ranked fifth in total defense in 2008, as NDSU was making their transition from NCAA Division II to eventual FCS national power. Bowman recorded 101 total tackles, 16 pass break ups, and one interception in his career in Fargo, and was nominated for the 2008 FedEx Orange Bowl Courage Award after returning to the field following a neck injury during the 2007 season. Bowman also earned a spot on the 2009 Allstate Good Works Team, joining players such as Florida's Tim Tebow along with 22 total players from all levels of football that embody the spirit of teamwork and community service. Following his playing career, Bowman earned his Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and currently serves as the campus pastor for The Summit Church's Downtown Durham campus in Durham, North Carolina. Bowman is also part of a team that is preparing to plant a church in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2026. In this episode, Bowman talks about growing up in Houston, Texas, his playing career at North Dakota State and overcoming his neck injury, and his journey into joining the ministry field.
On this episode of The Bluebloods, Zach McKinnell is joined by Timothy Rosario from FCS Football Central on SI to preview the MVFC entering the 2025 college football season. In the first part of the official MVFC preview, the two discuss the biggest storylines and dark horse teams in the conference. Which New QB Is Best Set Up For Success In 2025? Cole Payton at North Dakota State or Chase Mason at South Dakota State? Will South Dakota Be Able To Build On Last Season's Run To The Semifinals? Who Are The Biggest Dark Horses In The MVFC Entering Next Season? All this & more right here on The Bluebloods!

Had someone told a young Tyrone Braxton that one day he would be a two-time Super Bowl Champion and earn a PhD in his late 50's, he would never have believed them. Had someone told him he'd get involved in alcohol, drugs, be arrested and almost lose his family… well, he may have believed that because that's what happened to everyone he grew up with in Madison, Wisconsin. The fact that ALL of that happened to Tyrone and he's now working to help young people avoid his pitfalls makes for an incredible story. When Tyrone graduated from high school, two of his brothers were in jail and he was off to North Dakota State to play football. He helped the Bison win three National Championships during his four years and while he never thought he'd make it to the NFL, the Broncos took him with the 2nd to last pick in the 1987 NFL Draft. During his two stints with the Broncos, Tyrone was part of two losing Super Bowls (XXII and XXIV) and two winning Super Bowls (XXXII and XXXIII). Both stints were like different eras between coaches (Dan Reeves vs Mike Shanahan) and position (Cornerback vs Safety). When he retired, Tyrone was lost. He went to some bad places and in 2006 after he was arrested, he stood in front of the media and admitted he had a drug problem and needed to straighten up. It was his wake-up call and did he wake up. He finished his degree at North Dakota State, got his master's in social work at Metro State University and just finished his PhD at CU Denver. Now Dr. Braxton works with kids throughout Denver with everything from addiction, behavior, substance abuse, and every other pitfall today's youth can find. He's been there and understands. Listen to Tyrone's story and conversation with Susie Wargin on the Cut Traded Fired Retired Podcast.
Why should Sioux Falls be captivated and impressed by Canaries slugger Jabari Henry tying and eventually breaking the American Association independent league's career home run record, and what makes his story and career intriguing? How disappointing, if at all, should we consider the Minnesota Timberwolves' postseason run considering it will likely end in a "gentleman's sweep" of 4-1 in the Western Conference Finals? Is Anthony Edwards' starpower taking a step back the way he does on some nights? Now that the Minnesota Twins have cooled off a bit after their 13-game winning streak, what makes them worth a continued emotional investment from casual fans? What should we make of the South Dakota vs. North Dakota State football game being ranked as one of ESPN.com's top 10 college games (including FBS) to watch this season, and is South Dakota State being snubbed? What is Taryn Christion's legacy at SDSU — GOAT? Or perhaps something more meaningful?John Gaskins and Matt Zimmer tackle these topics for Tuesday's "Nobody's Listening Anyway" show for "Happy Hour with John Gaskins" from Gibs Sports Bar on the east side of Sioux Falls. But first — a toast to George Wendt, the "Cheers" actor who played loveable barfly Norm Peterson, died last week at age 76. Turns out, one of the most popular characters on one of the most popular shows in TV history has quite a following. Our Gen X hosts who grew up on Norm and the merry gang in the Boston sports bar devote a worthwhile chunk of time to what both Norm and Cheers meant to them.

Miami has been very active in the spring transfer portal, grabbing multiple players who likely will wind up either starting or playing major roles for the Hurricanes this season. The latest is former Auburn DB Keionte Scott, who spent the spring at Houston but reunites with former Auburn and Houston secondary coach Zac Etheridge in Miami. The Hurricanes also have added former Texas kicker Bert Auburn, former North Dakota State tailback CharMar Brown, former N.C. State linebacker Kamal Bonner, former Cincinnati receiver Tony Johnson and former BYU receiver/kick returner Keelon Marion. Can the Hurricanes get to the College Football Playoff with this roster? Also, ESPN's Heather Dinich said Tuesday that the seeding still might change for the 2025 College Football Playoff. Shedeur Sanders drops out of 1st round entirely. Jaguars give up A LOT to move up to draft Travis Hunter. Seahawks draft an offensive lineman from North Dakota State. Oregon sees player drafted in 1st round for 6th straight year.
-The Draft is always a fun time at the end of April, but it's also a time that has been not fun for Husker fans in seeing any elite talent get drafted high. They've had 2nd round picks in recent years (Cam Taylor-Britt, Cam Jurgens) and Jurgens obviously just got a massive contract with the Eagles, but fans rightfully so want the streak to end on first round picks-For reference, North Dakota State is expected to have a first round offensive lineman taken this year, which would be their 3rd first-round pick since 2016. The first major piece of news to point us toward the offseason direction of the Seahawks has dropped. So just what does the restructuring of the Leonard Williams contract mean? We get into it and discuss what could come next. A Myles Garrett trade would be intriguing, but there are probably about 30 other teams who would be interested. Klint Kubiak had his introductory press conference with the Seahawks this week. We discuss some of the more interesting moments from the offensive coordinator and talk about the potential for the Seahawks to carry a fullback on the roster in 2025. We kick off the second half of the show with a chat with North Dakota State quarterback Cam Miller, who shared his experience at Shrine Bowl, aspirations for the NFL, and a few players who he believes will have success at the NFL level. Former Seahawks Head Coach Mike Holmgren was snubbed from the Hall of Fame, but after a series of threats we expect he'll get in next year. We wrap up the show with 'Do Better' and 'Better at Life,' featuring Dan Orlovsky's unusual way of eating peanut butter cups, a top 5 list for Aaron Rodgers' landing spots, Saquon Barkley's gesture during the Eagles' Super Bowl parade and a place on Reddit for understanding pop culture references of the past and present.
