While we have tried to avoid the topic of COVID, today we are diving in! In this episode, we are joined by Chris Sloan, the President and Chief Creative Officer of 2C Creative. As the ultimate AvGeek and an accomplished writer, Chris's CV is quite fascinating. Today, however, he joins us to share his recent experience of a family trip to St. Lucia that went awry due to COVID. Chris explains all the protocols he followed to get to St. Lucia, how he first realized he was having symptoms, and how he tested positive for the virus as part of the COVID procedure to return home. Chris sheds light on how seriously St. Lucia takes COVID, what quarantining in the resort was like for him and his family, the financial implications of his involuntary extended stay, and how he feels about returning to the Caribbean island. Chris may be the first-ever guest on the show who loves American Airlines, and in this discussion, he explains why. You'll also hear about his love of aviation, his role in developing Airways Magazine, and his passion project The Airchive. Before the episode is over, we also share our thoughts on the location of Resorts World in Vegas and the recent changes to MGM Rewards. Remember back probably in middle school when we learned all about Venn diagrams? You know, the circles. Each one represents a characteristic, and where they overlap, you have the thing that the marketing department is probably looking for… But when it comes to aviation one that always keeps coming up is men, women, and pilots. Not all men are pilots, not all pilots are men. Not all women are pilots, not all pilots are women, and where the overlap part comes in, there's the individuals who are women and pilots. Stay with me, I'm going somewhere with this. There's another Venn diagram that keeps coming up too. And it's where the pilot circle overlaps with the controller circle. There's this tiny little sliver where I find myself, along with a few others who play both sides of the mic. It's cozy in here, and if you want to hang out, you'll find Me, Clay Taylor from Airways Magazine, RH and AG from Opposing Bases, and maybe a few others. And the little sliver gets reeeeealy small when you talk about controllers who are CURRENT pilots. Not “were” or “was in a different life.” Today's guest is pretty noteworthy as she's got a little of every circle I've mentioned thus far. And is generally known as one of the best controllers around. Or was at least, and we'll get to that. But she comes from a tower pretty similar to mine, and form what I've heard, knows how to rock a mic on either side. This is gonna be a fun day… Welcome to Podcasting on a Plane, I'm Brandon Gonzales, Tower Controller, CFI, Former Aircraft salesman, Aviation podcaster, and connoisseur of the Venn diagram… broadcasting as always from the Tower at mythical, yet oh so real West Coast Delta, and this is the podcast where we talk about the backstories behind all that we do in air world. Sometimes on the flying side, sometimes on the ATC side, and sometimes both. And from what your feedback tells me, those are the favorites, so be glad you listened today because that's what's about to happen. Now I mentioned Venn diagrams earlier. And we found ourselves in a really tiny overlap, but I've got just one more circle to add. What about not only controllers who are pilots, but those who actually CARE. People who don't just hold certificates and go to work, but people who go to work because it's their purpose. It isn't just a job. In this little sliver of the Venn diagram, everybody knows each others' names. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sincodigo/message
Welcome Aboard The Airways Podcast! The 51st episode of the show kicks off with Rohan Anand and Enrique Perrella sharing their isolation stories as the world continues to be under lockdown due to COVID-19. To steer away from the trendy negative news that has overwhelmed the globe, this episode focuses solely on an interview with David H Striner, the history editor at Airways Magazine. David is responsible for the history department at Airways and has written an extensive feature on the 90th anniversary of the creation of American Airlines. In this episode, David narrates a few highlights of his story, which takes us back to the late 1950s when several small airlines were brought together to form American Airways—the predecessor of today's American Airlines—all the way until the late 1960s when the carrier entered the jet era. The interview with Stringer evolves into a great conversation in which Rohan and Enrique reveal some great AvGeek memories, such as their first flights on American Airlines 727s and DC-10s, and their shared love for the MD-11. As the world continues to battle COVID-19, the Airways Team hopes you will enjoy this episode. Tune in, The Airways Podcast is here!
Welcome Aboard The Airways Podcast! The 50th episode of the show launches with our hosts sharing their occurrences while on quarantine due to the major coronavirus spread that has brought the world to a halt. Enrique introduces the new Airways Digital Suite, which brings an all-new interface, upgrading the standards in our readers' digital magazine reading experience. The new app is based on a platform that allows readers to search, read, listen to, customize, bookmark, print, share, and enjoy every Airways Magazine article that has been published since 2014. Then, the first analysis in this episode dives into the US airline bailout that will take place soon. Vinay and Rohan discuss the positives and negatives of such bailout, providing deep analysis and commentary. The second analysis in this episode tackles the Twilight of the Jumbo Jet era, following up on Vinay's article that was published on the 26th-anniversary issue of Airways Magazine. Our hosts discuss why the 747 and A380 are no longer viable and provide some insights on the future of the very large airplane (VLA) segment of the market, including why Vinay thinks the Boeing 777-X is in danger. Welcome Aboard The Airways Podcast! Season 3 kicks off with an all-new format. Rohan Anand and Vinay Bhaskara welcome Enrique Perrella as the third host of the show. Enrique, the Publisher & Editor in Chief of Airways Magazine, also joins the production team, bringing in numerous guests from the industry to be featured in this season's interview segment. This new season will be edited and cured by our new team member, Jeffry Nova, a professional radio veteran who's taking The Airways Podcast to a new level of quality. In this episode, David Neeleman exclusively tells Airways Managing Editor, Chris Sloan, the tentative launch date of his new startup, code-named Moxy. Rohan, Vinay, and Enrique analyze three topics drawn from the top headlines in the commercial aviation scene: Boeing mothballs the launching of the 777-8X. Cathay Pacific changes its top management. Tokyo-Narita gives way to Haneda as the prime airport for US carriers. Tune in, The Airways Podcast is here!
