    Ivy Insights

The Podcasting On A Plane podcast is an incredibly informative and engaging aviation podcast that covers a wide range of topics. Hosted by Brandon Gonzales, an experienced air traffic controller and pilot, this podcast provides listeners with valuable insights into the world of aviation.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is Brandon's solid research and dedication to producing quality content. He goes above and beyond to keep listeners educated and up-to-date on various aviation topics. Whether it's discussing iconic aircraft like the SR-71 and Concorde or interviewing individuals who have made a significant impact in aviation, Brandon ensures that every episode is interesting and relevant.

Another great aspect of this podcast is its appeal to both general aviation pilots and aviation enthusiasts. The real-world, educational, and entertaining nature of the episodes makes it enjoyable for anyone with an interest in aviation. Brandon's sensational Concord series is particularly worth listening to for both pilots and non-pilots alike.

It's hard to find any major flaws with this podcast, but one minor downside could be the lack of a consistent release schedule. While some listeners prefer regular episodes, Brandon releases new content whenever he has fresh material, which can lead to longer breaks between episodes. However, the quality of the content more than makes up for any potential irregularity in release schedule.

In conclusion, The Podcasting On A Plane podcast is an absolute gem for anyone interested in aviation. Brandon's expertise as both an air traffic controller and pilot brings a unique perspective to each episode. With his passion for aviation shining through in every conversation, combined with top-notch production values, this podcast is one that shouldn't be missed. Whether you're a seasoned pilot or just starting your journey in aviation, Podcasting On A Plane provides valuable insights and entertaining discussions that will keep you coming back for more.

Well, it's probably time to address the elephant in the room… It's been since August 2021 that I've released a podcast Episode and yes, there's a very good reason. And that's what today's show is. A bit of a comeback really, but mostly just an explanation of what happened and how I've dealt with it. And that's not to be somber or negative. I'm genuinely happy to be back, and I want to thank everyone who has emailed and messaged me over the last six months or so, asking what's up, and offering genuine words of encouragement to come back. And we'll cover most of those in the talk. And I say ‘we' because I asked my friend Rob Mark to come on and act as my sounding board as I talk through everything. He's a good listener and I thank him for doing this one with me. It feels good to be back! These last few months have really been something for me. I think the best way to describe it is as a total reset. All of the hard lessons learned over the last year and a half, plus all of the great stuff too, all put back together in a new package, and with that, the show's finally back. And with a bang because Chad's here, and I've got a great reading from one of my favorite magazines that sums up “Enthusiasm” better than I ever could. So, while I was “away” I actually got a lot of feedback and emails and even a few new patrons too. And we're going to get right to that. But first, the elephant in the room. No, I'm not at Oshkosh. I actually did plan to go, even managed to get the week off, but this summer, for whatever reason, I felt the need to be home and getting things back on track more than ever. And I'm glad I did, because a lot actually transpired over this last week of July I was glad to be home for. Including making this Episode! Let's welcome our new Patrons: Scott Sutton and Christian! I've been in a bit of a funk. Not really flying, not really participating in the industry, not really inspired to put it bluntly. And I know I'm not the only one. And it's kinda funny, since by all counts, we're actually coming out of this disaster time and getting the industry on the long road to recovery. Will it ever be the same. Well, probably not exactly, but who knows, maybe it'll be better? But I finally started flying again on the regular. Every Saturday around noon you might find me in a Diamond Star somewhere over Southern California and it feels pretty good. But there were a few first flights back that felt more than a little uncomfortable and awkward. And I don't like feeling that way in an airplane. Now I know, I know, this might be the last thing anybody wants to talk about ever again. Except maybe politics, that's usually worse, and I usually make a point to steer clear of that as much as possible, but the conversation we have isn't about that, although it may border dangerously close few times... It's about what I call “getting it back.” Our lives, our inspiration, our mojo. Getting our groove back so that we can put this all behind us as quickly and healthily (I'm sure that's a legitimate medical term) as possible. So, I hope you'll stay listening, and let me know how you're feeling as we come back to reality.   JetWhine.com  PlaneEnglish ATC Simulator - Get 10% off with code: delta Support: https://www.patreon.com/podcastingonaplane  Buy me a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BravoGolf Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podcastingonaplane/ Twitter: podcastonaplane Website: www.podcastingonaplane.com  Music by: Cushy Make sure to use good equipment! I think it was Bob Dylan who sang about the times, they are a changin'. And while I guess that's always a little true, it seems like it's especially appropriate now. And I hope it's all good, because there are a few things that really do need a changin' so that we can resume functionality in the industry. And particularly this is true anywhere there's bureaucracy. Like how many times have you said something like. “Don't we have a technology to just automate this?” And since the beginning of the pandemic, maybe you've said something similar like “can't we just do this remotely?” Well, more and more, it's looking like the answer is yes! Just about every meeting and collaboration can now be done from the comfort of your home over Zoom or Teams, and for the most part, that's cool. That is, unless your kid pops in on your live broadcast, or you've accidentally left your favorite sex toy on the shelf right behind you... But what about in aviation? We don't pilot passengers remotely. Yet at least. We can, but do t really do remote tower operations. However you could argue that just about all radar stuff is remote though. But of course, not from home. But there is one thing we just may be able to do remotely now, but the jury is still out on whether or not it's a great idea… Rob and I want to hear from you about this! Make sure to send in your feedback so that we can discuss it in a future Episode. GOOOOOOOD DAY! BG P.S. go to Rob's website jetwhine.com  where you're always welcome to "be a whiner." As I look back on my flying career, I often think about some of the quotes I've heard along the way. Aviate, Navigate, Commumnicate, Monitor the freq. before you speak. Speed is life, altitude is insurance. And, I'll never not be able to hear Martha King say “Please, stay out of the trees.” But, there's one quote that seems to keep coming up time and time again. It's written on the walls of flight schools, seen on plaques and awards, quoted in films, and used in just about every piece of learn to fly marketing material I've ever seen. And that's because it's so beautiful. So expressive of the sentiment we all feel when aviation's running through your veins, and spoken by one of the all time great artists, scientists, and thinkers of the last thousand years. Are you ready? “Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” - Leonardo DaVinci There's just one problem… DaVinci never said that!   Air Facts Article Aviation Quotations Dave English   PlaneEnglish ATC Simulator - Get 10% off with code: delta Support: https://www.patreon.com/podcastingonaplane Buy me a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BravoGolf Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podcastingonaplane/ Twitter: podcastonaplane Website: www.podcastingonaplane.com Music by: Damma Beatz Make sure to use good equipment! In the old school where print magazines were all we had, letters were pretty much how content creators (also before they were called that too) would interact with the readership. But now, I think it's so cool that we have the ability to actually talk with the content creators we like, and one of my favorite parts of doing this podcast is talking with those of you that listen, and then come up with really good feedback and questions. And as we kiss good-bye they worst year on record in my lifetime, and start in to 202 with a healthy amount of cautions optimism, I can't say that I'll be changing the show fundamentally. But, if there are any resolution-style changes I'd like, it'd be to get you all on it more, be it through voice feedback, emails, or whatever. And to that end, I've got quite a bit of it today, questions, comments, a little something for everyone, so let's get to it. Have you ever met one of those people where, it seems like every sentence out of their mouth gives you déjà vu? It doesn't happen very often, but maybe that's why you remember... It happened to me last year at an MMOPA safety stand down. I walked in, sat down. And I started listening to the guy teaching the class (his name is Rich by the way). He talked about icing encounters in Colorado and some other stuff you might find relevant next time you're doing something you probably shouldn't be in a meridian or an eclipse. But after the lecture ended he took us all out to lunch at the fantastic Mexican restaurant Cosa Machado if you've ever been to Montgomery Field (KMYF). He started talking about the things he done, the places he had been, crazy stuff actually. I think it started with flying in airplane in the thunderstorms or something. But then we got to becoming a police officer in Colorado and not just anywhere Colorado; Telluride Colorado (KTEX). The very same place I grew up. The same place I did a radio show with my dad. And, guess we talked about next. Broadcasting. Then, Working a more or less first job throwing bags for continental airlines at Stapleton, Which they also let me do back at Telluride as my first aviation job. I mean. CO Express, but hey, who's counting. And plus, the flights went to Denver anyway. So there. But I can't help feeling that so many things that I did, it's like he had done the same thing only a few decades earlier. Something I've said, or at least implied, is that aviation can be just so many different things to so many different people. And I'm not here to judge. Quite the opposite, I'm happy for you however you choose to integrate it into your daily life. And while I wouldn't change much about my journey, there's a little part of me that has a dream about how, in a different time and place, maybe I'd have taken a different path. One where I stuck with broadcasting. Or whatever, and took aviation into my life in a different way. That's probably why I gel with our guest today so well. If you've been around for a while, you'll probably remember at least one aviation downturn. Maybe two or three. In fact, we could probably figure out how long you've been in the industry, in decades, based on how many you've seen. This'll be my third... In case you haven't noticed, we're in one again. Sure, it looks a lot different than downturns of years passed. But the big question, right after you figure out what the heck you're going to do while things are down, is how you're going to position yourself for the upswing. And yes, as bleak as things often look, there WILL be an upside. We just never exactly know when. I don't have a crystal ball. Nobody does. Not even the old guy with the expensive suit you saw on CNBC. I mean, sure, he sounds like he does, but he doesn't. The one thing that guy does have though, is some pretty good market research to go off of. But that takes armies of people who make it their business to collect and analyze data, and we don't often get to see it raw, and even if we did, I'm not sure we'd really know how to interpret it. But… What if there was a really user friendly place to get industry news that covers things like: ATC, dispatch, data analysis, aircraft and interior design and engineering, IT and cybersecurity. And what about if the source made a solid effort to connect different parts of industry to each other in ways not covered before. And what if this source made an effort to inform you about specific actionable things that can be done at all levels to raise the visibility of the opportunities existing in aviation and aerospace for well-paid, challenging and critical jobs? Jobs that can give Silicon Valley and others a run for their money any day. Cool stuff that kids might want to do like: unmanned systems, advanced air mobility, aviation innovation incubators, commercial space, environmental issues, changing powerplant technology and connected aircraft. I'd read it. And I'd definitely do a podcast about it too… So here it is! -Brandon Future Aviation Aerospace Workforce  PlaneEnglish ATC Simulator - Get 10% off with code: delta Support: https://www.patreon.com/podcastingonaplane Buy me a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BravoGolf Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podcastingonaplane/ Twitter: podcastonaplane Website: www.podcastingonaplane.com Music by: Danijel Zambo Make sure to use good equipment! Remember back probably in middle school when we learned all about Venn diagrams? You know, the circles. Each one represents a characteristic, and where they overlap, you have the thing that the marketing department is probably looking for… But when it comes to aviation one that always keeps coming up is men, women, and pilots. Not all men are pilots, not all pilots are men. Not all women are pilots, not all pilots are women, and where the overlap part comes in, there's the individuals who are women and pilots. Stay with me, I'm going somewhere with this. There's another Venn diagram that keeps coming up too. And it's where the pilot circle overlaps with the controller circle. There's this tiny little sliver where I find myself, along with a few others who play both sides of the mic. It's cozy in here, and if you want to hang out, you'll find Me, Clay Taylor from Airways Magazine, RH and AG from Opposing Bases, and maybe a few others. And the little sliver gets reeeeealy small when you talk about controllers who are CURRENT pilots. Not “were” or “was in a different life.” Today's guest is pretty noteworthy as she's got a little of every circle I've mentioned thus far. And is generally known as one of the best controllers around. Or was at least, and we'll get to that. But she comes from a tower pretty similar to mine, and form what I've heard, knows how to rock a mic on either side. This is gonna be a fun day… Welcome to Podcasting on a Plane, I'm Brandon Gonzales, Tower Controller, CFI, Former Aircraft salesman, Aviation podcaster, and connoisseur of the Venn diagram… broadcasting as always from the Tower at mythical, yet oh so real West Coast Delta, and this is the podcast where we talk about the backstories behind all that we do in air world. Sometimes on the flying side, sometimes on the ATC side, and sometimes both. And from what your feedback tells me, those are the favorites, so be glad you listened today because that's what's about to happen. Now I mentioned Venn diagrams earlier. And we found ourselves in a really tiny overlap, but I've got just one more circle to add. What about not only controllers who are pilots, but those who actually CARE. People who don't just hold certificates and go to work, but people who go to work because it's their purpose. It isn't just a job. In this little sliver of the Venn diagram, everybody knows each others' names. So today, let me introduce you to Pam…     PlaneEnglish ATC Simulator - Get 10% off with code: delta Support: https://www.patreon.com/podcastingonaplane Buy me a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BravoGolf Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podcastingonaplane/ Twitter: podcastonaplane Website: www.podcastingonaplane.com   Music by: Damma Beatz   Make sure to use good equipment! Episode 81 | Has "Narrative" ruined Journalism? Or was it Twitter? | Rob Mark

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 29, 2022 35:22

What's Narrative? No, honestly what is it. And why the heck are we talking about it on an aviation podcast?! Well, because I'm repurposing content from another thing I do. No, I'm kidding… Sort of. Narrative affects everything we hear. It's that thing news outlets have that affects how they're going to spin a story. And if you ask me, it's a bummer that has to be a thing at all. Today's a really cool episode, because we're stepping a little outside the usual mold (as if there was one here), and pulling back the curtain a little bit. And for those in the business of making content, it's something we struggle with sometimes. Now, this is an aviation podcast, one in which I often promise the back story in all that we do in air world, and since aviation journalism is how we spread the word about pretty much all that happens in it, I figured an Episode like this is fair game. If you're new here, this one's a little different. Regular listeners will know that I'm an administrator at the 21st century aerospace communicators group, along with many notable aviation writers you've actually heard of, and if you're curious, make sure to get on Facebook and request to be in the group too. Oh, and don't forget to go back and listen to Episode 52 for more about us. The group is led by Rob Mark, and no matter where you fall in the spectrum of civil aviation, you'll probably be familiar with his work. He's the Senior Editor at FLYING Magazine and the publisher of JetWhine.com, long time Airplane Geek over at the Airplane Geeks Podcast, Graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern, but most importantly of all, frequent guest on this show…. Ok maybe that's not the most important part, but he's back today because we really wanted to tackle a topic that's an underlying part of just about everything we read, hear, and watch in the news, aviation or not: Narrative It's a simple word, and it's defined by (Dictionary.com): a representation of a particular situation or process in such a way as to reflect or conform to an overarching set of aims or values.  But the implications of it are huge. It's part of the entire brand of a news outlet. And, if you ask me, or anybody really, it often gets taken too far. To the point that things are straight up twisted to make a story pan out a certain way. And then twisted a little further to get more re-tweets…   21st Century Aerospace Communicators Group Bari Weiss resignation letter Has Twitter ruined Journalism? In flying, I think everybody more or less falls into two camps. Camp 1: Those that are there for adventure, and Camp 2: those who aren't.  Some people crave a little uncertainty, and the others want to use their OCD to avoid anything of the sort. Today's guest, quote/unquote “Baller Pilot” Deanna Wallace is really going to put the World In Air World, because she's seen a great deal of it, for better or for worse, from the best vantage point there is... a sketchy turboprop you just picked up that needs to get somewhere fast. Ok, so maybe it's not the absolute best way to see the world, but that's just my Camp 2 narrative talking. Deanna, well, she lives firmly in camp one, and I think that's pretty cool, and by the end of today, I think you will too. Especially after she shares one of the best “how I got into flying” stories I've heard. And it's shares more than a little bit with my own.  Plus, there's the whole line guy foot fetish story ….. so yeah…   Follow Deanna: https://www.instagram.com/thegirlpilot/  Casey Aviation Deanna on InTheHangar   PlaneEnglish ATC Simulator - Get 10% off with code: delta   Support: https://www.patreon.com/podcastingonaplane  Buy me a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BravoGolf Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podcastingonaplane/ Twitter: podcastonaplane Website: www.podcastingonaplane.com    Music by: Danijel Zambo   Make sure to use good equipment! It's been almost a year and a half since the Atlas crash, and that's about how long it takes the NTSB to complete a formal investigation, and to issue a Probable Cause statement. And boy did they ever… The idea that a 767 could just fall out of the sky vertically, with no warning, was weird enough to suggest that this wouldn't be a typical case, but now that the truth is out, the weirdness doesn't disappoint. There's a great article out there from Rob Mark, at FLYING Magazine, and there's a link in the show notes, just in case you missed it. But today Rob's here, in the flesh, and we have a pretty cool talk for you. And it's about more than just what happened, it's about why it happened, and whether or not we can even prevent something like this from happening in the future. And I sure hope we can. But as you'll hear, it'll take a lot more than just a few tweaks in the training Department… From Rob's Article: The NTSB issued six new safety recommendations following the investigation into the Atlas Air 3591 accident. The NTSB said the FAA should issue a safety alert for all Boeing 757/767 operators warning of the possibility of an inadvertent go-around activation when the pilot flying is in close proximity to the speed brake handle. The NTSB also wants to see the vulnerabilities of the current pilot record system that would include the results of all pilot training once it begins, regardless of the result and that the system be easily searchable by pilot certificate number. The Board reiterated its call for advanced cockpit video recorder systems for Part 121/135 aircraft. On the human side of the equation, the NTSB reiterated to the FAA the urgent need to “require all Part 121 and 135 air carriers to obtain any notices of disapproval for flight checks for certificates and ratings for all pilot applicants and evaluate this information before making a hiring decision. To also require Part 121, 135, and 91K operators to document and retain electronic and/or paper records of pilot training and checking events in sufficient detail so the the carrier and its principal operations inspector can fully assess a pilot's entire training performance. The Board also wants to see all training records provided to hiring employers as required under the PRIA and to develop a method of verifying the accuracy of those training records.” I'm sure you've got at least one opinion on something you've heard today. What if you're living the dream? Maybe you've got a plane of your own. Not much risk in that right? Or is there? For those outside the industry, there's always stuff getting made up about what goes on in private jets, and who knows, maybe some of it's true, but for you all listening, we all know the reality is that having your own plane isn't so much about frivolous luxury, but more about business. And enjoyment too of course, but in a time like this, it could also be about safety above all else. Because you've got the ability to get around, without much contact with the outside world. But sometimes, and even with your own plane, you're still going to be out in the world a bit. And for those who fly things that burn kerosene, yes even just for personal use, you're going to have to go through recurrent training each year. And chances are, that's in a sim center. Which is full of people.  in close proximity... So, what's it like? Well, luckily (for us at least), friends and show supporters Phil and Daniel just went through it. And they were happy to share their experience with what it was like to spend the week in Dallas. IMC Club chapters offer monthly meetings in which pilots can network and share knowledge and experiences. The chapter resources and scenarios are being produced and distributed as a new program by EAA IMC LLC (“EAA IMC”), an Experimental Aircraft Association Inc. subsidiary, under a license from IMC Club International Inc. This will provide resources for new and improved program offerings that will enhance and expand the impact of the IMC concept. To provide continuity, support, direction, and programming, Radek is now the manager of flight proficiency with EAA IMC. Being part of the EAA family will provide the network, critical mass, and resources to take flight safety and proficiency to the next level.  EAA IMC Club is presented by Bose Corporation and supported by Jeppesen. Welcome, back, Happy new year, 2020, it's the beginning of a new year, a new decade, and hopefully the beginning of a new era for a certain aerospace company starting with a B. I'm Brandon Gonzales, This is Podcasting on a Plane, and this is YOUR aviation audio magazine. We hit aviation from as many angles as possible, my favorite two angles are from the cockpit, and from the tower. And that's because I'm an Air Traffic Tower Controller at a busy General Aviation Airport, but I'm also a pilot, specializing in high performance transition training and mentoring pilots into the complex world of our national airspace system. Or, put more simply, You call me if you're a general aviation pilot and you want to level up your game both in the plane, and on the radios. On this Podcast, we share stories, news, and experiences that will help you love aviation even more. But sometimes it's a little hard. Like when you love something that seems to have lost its way. You want it to be great again, but the road to recovery is long, and arduous, and  as much as you want to help, there's little you can really do to affect its outcome. Yeah, we're talking about Boeing again, and today I've compiled a few really good news articles about where things stand. And make sure to stay all the way to the end, because the final article is probably my favorite article of 2019 about anything, and It answers the one true question we've all been asking… Support: https://www.patreon.com/podcastingonaplane Buy me a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BravoGolf YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx1DKOUuGxohHU5YxEC_w0w?view_as=subscriber Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podcastingonaplane/ Twitter: podcastonaplane Website: www.podcastingonaplane.com

But for an SR crew, that's not good enough, because even though you could buy a book about the SR anywhere, or check one out at the library, and I recommend you do. These guys are still traveling around, 30 years later, AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE to make sure that their stories don't expire on their watch. And to do their part to inspire youth, and people of all ages to participate in this amazing thing we call aviation. And that, is how you leave a legacy. I want to thank you personally for being here all week and hearing these stories. On such a special series like this, I won't be back at the end with an outro, but don't worry, Robby will leave you with a message more inspirational than I ever could. So, before we start, I want to take a moment to express what an honor it was to produce these episodes. To be part of the team at the Air Zoo, if only for a minute, and to do what little bit I can to preserve these stories for future generations. It's been one of the most enjoyable projects I've ever worked on, in any capacity and I'm humbled to be the one to bring these stories to you. So, without further ado, I leave you in the hands of those who were trusted to fly, monitor, and maintain the fastest spy plane ever created... Stormy Boudreaux, John Manzi, and Robby Butterfield. Saturday night at the museum. Maybe not something you'd associate with a good time. Probably the opposite actually. But on THIS Saturday night, even for a college town like Kalamazoo, the Air Zoo was the place to be. Because, on that night, every single member of the crew was out and about to tell their stories to a willing crowd. Forget about the context of a museum, the Air Zoo is possibly one of the finest event venues I've ever seen with an aviation theme. Like walking onto a movie set but one where you get to interact with the characters. And the characters in our story are the SR-71 crews. And to make it even more special tonight was the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to actually sit inside the SR 71. If you're wondering, yeah, I did end up sitting in it, in the same exact seat that Buz, BC, and those select few instructors got to sit in as they checked out each and every one of the 89 or so SR pilots at Beale. And it was an honor. Now that we've met all but 3 of our crew members, as you listen, see if you can identify your favorites as we spend the evening walking the floor of one of the most unique evenings I've ever had. What you'll hear: Steve discussing taking the Job at Lockheed Ed Yeilding discussing HABU BC and Ed Still have their flight suits ready BC Thomas Trolling North Korea “Short a rudder” Ed Hall Gives us a guided tour of the B model   Produced in collaboration with Kalamazoo Air Zoo. “A letter to Kelly Johnson” was a bonus part of “Blackbird: The Movie” A film by Lockheed. I recommend you go see it. For today's episode, I have 5 people here who CAN follow that act. The guys who maintained it. The reality of operating the SR was that with all of its technology and grace, it needed a lot of maintenance. And rightfully so. Can you imagine being tasked with learning every nut bolt, spacer, mount, bearing, expansion joint, seam, and seal in the world's most amazing aircraft? I think it's safe to say it wasn't like working on any other aircraft at the time, or ever since, and for the crews tasked with keeping it ready to go at all times, it wasn't like supporting anything else… Today we hear their stories. And if you even think for a second that the maintenance side of things isn't for you, think again. The 5 histories you're going to hear today will change the way you think about maintenance forever, and each story will teach you something you'll take with you, and think about every time you touch an airplane from now on. The SR is capable of going so high and fast that it'll get hotter than an oven just from friction, but ever wonder what happens if you get it wet? What happens if you catch fire during refueling and end up stranding one in Ogden, UT? Or what to do if you're going to run out of Nitrogen, before you run out of fuel…   Support: https://www.patreon.com/podcastingonaplane Buy me a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BravoGolf YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx1DKOUuGxohHU5YxEC_w0w?view_as=subscriber Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podcastingonaplane/ Twitter: podcastonaplane Website: www.podcastingonaplane.com   Music by: Yeti Music and Fracture Design

Our story starts with me standing in a hangar. A really big hangar. Actually, it's more like a movie set. A movie set with rides, and an F-14, and an SR-71, but they're not props though, they're real… I'm not on a movie set at all though, I'm in a museum. A museum they call the Zoo. And I'm in Michigan. Follow along all week as the story unfolds.  Today, hear from former Lockheed Skunk Works Director and Historian, Steve Justice. Plus, Pilots B.C. Thomas and Ed Yeilding tell us what it was like to hold a blackbird steady for 20 minutes for a refueling. What it was like to mess with Fidel Castro from 80,000 feet, to make the final Blackbird flight, while setting a world record speed run, and to deliver a piece of history to Washington. And what it's like to see 3 sunsets and sunrises in an hour, while looking down into the eye of a hurricane. Special thanks go to Jamie Pleune for kicking this all off. And to Air Zoo CEO Troy for Hosting me, and giving me free rein to record this spectacular weekend. Thank you Abby for being an amazing co-producer! And thanks to Nikki, Nate, and Rebecca. For turning the chaos into magic. ...and for introducing me to Blackbird Porter. The old saying always went, If it ain't Boeing, I ain't going.  A saying that not only showed allegiance to a favorite heavy airframe manufacturer, but that also had an underlying sense of patriotism too. I'd be hard to argue that Boeing isn't an American institution. A US company that for decades dominated the global airframe market, and even though Airbus has made things more of a duopoly over the past few decades (and I'm going to sidestep a whole bunch of politics here) the Boeing Vs Airbus thing is a lot more than just two companies competing in a market. It's ideological. Patriotically, it represents the position of the United States in the global transportation market. That alone is enough for most Americans to take up an opinion.  But for us aviators, there's an even bigger issue, and it's one of control. Not just in business, but in a fundamental physical form. Because Boeing trusts YOU to have it. Or at least, they always did… Lion Air Crash report article: https://www.aerotime.aero/clement.charpentreau/24120-lion-air-crash-report-points-to-boeing-faa-and-airline-flaws?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email  The Lion Air KNKT Official report: http://knkt.dephub.go.id/knkt/ntsc_aviation/baru/2018%20-%20035%20-%20PK-LQP%20Final%20Report.pdf  Boeing's final statement on Lion Air Investigation report: https://boeing.mediaroom.com/2019-10-25-Boeing-Statement-On-Lion-Air-Flight-610-Investigation-Final-Report  Boeing Promises to fix the software: https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/25/business/lion-air-crash-boeing-737-max/index.html  Boeing replaces head of Commercial Aircraft: https://news.airwise.com/story/boeing-commercial-ceo-mcallister-leaves  NYT 2016: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/18/business/boeing-flight-simulator-text-message.html  Southwest Sues Boeing: https://www.apnews.com/b07e9d1121b34a0f884d6626c07fa876   Southwest looking at other options: https://skift.com/2019/10/24/southwest-will-look-at-buying-jets-other-than-boeing-737s-after-48-year-run/  The Aviation Minute by Rob Mark: https://www.jetwhine.com/2019/10/if-it-aint-boeing-i-aint-going/

As controllers, we often talk about the traffic in two ways. Volume, which of course, is how many airplanes, and complexity. Which is how difficult it is to make a problem work. Without complexity, you can work a ton of aircraft, and it isn't all that bad. But with complexity factored in, you can feel like you're going down the tubes with only a few. The real question is though, how do you feel about it when you're there, and when it's over. That session felt like anything worth doing. Kinda painful, but very gratifying afterward. And a friend saying something nice can make it all worthwhile. If you're new to the show, welcome! My name is Brandon Gonzales. I'm an Air Traffic Controller at a busy GA airport, but I've had a varied 25 year aviation experience thus far including Piloting, Flight Instructing, Aircraft Sales, Ramp and line service for both GA and airlines, and now Aviation podcasting as well. On this show we hit aviation from as many angles as possible. Be it news, interviews, storytelling, Airlines, GA, even drones sometimes. But whatever it is, if you can fly in it, it's fair game here. Today specifically, we've got two of my favorite aviation topics to discuss. Aviation community, and also future technology. Back to the beginning of the episode and the shoutouts from my friends. At my airport, there's no lack of friendship. People are always saying hi to me and each other on the radio, setting up airport events, and I'll be honest, our airport even has a decent bar… But it reminded me. That's probably the greatest part of this whole aviation thing. Besides burning kerosene to propel yourself around at hundreds of miles per hour & stuff, but I digress.  The communities built around different parts of flying never fail to amaze me, and now, in the time of social media, that's gotten even better. So, in this episode, I'm going to change some stuff up. It's community first! …Then the other content. Which by the way today is an interview with a professor at Arizona State University named Yongming Liu, who's working with NASA to change the future of air traffic control. You know, it's interesting how the government works with academia and if you're interested in that, or the future of ATC, you won't want to miss this!
