Today's guest knows a thing or two about endurance, both in and out of the world of swimming. Get ready to meet the inspirational marathon swimmer, Alice Dearing.  Alice has been swimming since the age of four, and at the Tokyo Olympics became the first Black woman to compete in an Olympic swimming event for Team GB. It has taken 125 years from swimming's Olympic debut in 1896 for this to happen, so let's just let that sink in for a second and ask why? Well in this episode, Alice shares some insight on the racism that has prevented black people from accessing the world of swimming.  Alice isn't just a game-changer in elite sport, she is also trying to change swimming at grassroots level too, by co-founding The Black British Swimming Association, which she hopes will reverse the statistics that 95% of black adults and 80% of black children do not swim.  It doesn't stop there, Alice has co-created the very first swimming hat designed specifically for Black hair, something that is vital for representation in swimming, a place which hasn't always made space for Alice. But why wait to take a seat at the table when you can build your own, like Alice has done, right?  I really hope you will be inspired by Alice's story, as she talks about the racism and mental health hurdles she's had to overcome to participate in sport, as well as the sheer endurance it takes to just keep swimming.  As always, if you love this chat please get in touch across socials on @joshsmithhosts because it's always great chatting to you and come back next week for the next episode in our special women in sport series! Love, Josh xx P.S. I am BEYOND proud that this series is empowered by Nike, whose ambition - just like Reign - is to champion women and girls and ensure they feel seen and included in sport and beyond.  Nike is committed to celebrating ALL women, supporting HER journey by taking action to make meaningful change and coming through with innovative style-led products you will hear all about in this series.  I'm sure you will have already seen the game-changing new England women's football kit - which we talk about in this episode - that includes the new Leak Protection technology embedded in the lining of the Nike Pro Short for athletes. And Nike have also just launched the Phantom Luna - a women-led football boot, backed by Nike's most meaningful investment in women yet that has taken more than two years of research, trialling, designing and styling to develop.  We haven't even got onto the bras, leggings, Pro Hijabs and their maternity and plus size ranges so make sure you check out all of the latest innovation for HER product at Nike.com and @nikewomen.  Learn more about your ad choices. We discuss the statement released by Nicola Bulley's family following the sad news that that the body found in river Wyre had been formally identified as Nicola Bulley who had been missing for over 3 weeks. They expressed their pain on how their loved ones were treated throughout this ordeal. They called for accountability, and for another family not to go through what they had gone through. Joining Nuala is Zoe Billingham, former head of the inspectorate of Constabulary, Ellen Milazzo from Victim Support and Baroness Helen Newlove, former victim's commissioner for England and Wales. Up to 9 in 10 first-time mothers who have a vaginal birth will have some sort of tear. So, it's no wonder that tearing is a big worry for expectant mums. Marie Louise, also known as The Modern Midwife, explains to Nuala why tears happen, and what to really expect. Plus, midwife turned inventor, Malene Hegenberger, explains how she created a retractor to help her see tears better when suturing. Why are women from diverse background much less likely to be able to swim than white women? And what can be done about it? Team GB's first black female swimmer Alice Dearing helped to found the Black Swimming Association along with journalist Seren Jones – they join Nuala to discuss. As London Fashion Week draws to a close today, the Times fashion director, 51-year-old Anna Murphy, reflects on feeling like the only woman of her age in the front row who has not had work done on her face. What she calls the normalisation of ‘tweakments' is one of the topics explored in her new book Destination Fabulous. For today's show, I chat to an athlete who's just returned from her first Olympic Games , open water swimmer, Alice Dearing. When we met in a small park in Camberley in the south of England, she was still unpacking all of what she's been through from being part of the hugely successful team GB to her first Olympic final and how she would approach it again. It was fascinating to listen to her talk about all of that, how she deals with the ridiculously early morning training and volume as well as the sheer danger involved in swimming in open water. Alice is also Great Britain's first female black swimmer and we talk about that as we close our chat but we start with me asking her how she's dealing with her time off and not being in a strict regime.

At last! Competition in the UK. And marathon swimmer Alice Dearing was back in the pool for the first time in 11 months. Alice normally competes in open water - but grabbed this opportunity as British Swimming put on a competitive meeting in Manchester. She talks about how she loved the event and describes how it worked....and hopefully paves the way for more competitions and a return to recreational pools being opened. Thanks for listening. I've got two great guest today. Alice Dearing is aiming to be the first black woman to represent Team GB in swimming. With so much speculation about the Games this summer, Alice tells me she's of the mindset that there will be an Olympics. She feels it's so important to keep focused on the goal and not to slacken off. Alice is an open water swimmer, but barely trains here in the UK. So for her, it's pool based training and competition. She tells me that she found it quite emotionally difficult last year when the Games were cancelled as she was in great shape. Dai Greene knows this will be his last Olympics. And he's adapted to change by turning an outbuilding at the farm where he lives into a makeshift gym. He's also sharing his training plans - good and bad! He also reveals he was a British Record holder at MacDonalds in his student days! And is now putting his experiences there to good use! He's in charge of the oven for his partner's new sourdough pizza business. I had the best time speaking to the incredibly talented endurance athlete Alice Dearing in this episode. Alice has some amazing achievements, such as representing GB in marathon (10km) swimming in three World Championships, and becoming the World Junior Open Water Champion in 2016. We explore Alice's swimming journey throughout the episode, and address the challenges she has faced within competitive sport, such as; mental health maintenance, the impact COVID-19 has had on training and mindset, overall time management and the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics to 2021. She also gave me some tips for open water swimming, and we investigate the universal benefits of training in the natural water. We conclude the episode by speaking about Alice's inspirational empowerment of diversity within the sport, where she is the co-founder of the Black Swimming Association and an ambassador for Soul Cap, both projects which possess passion for increasing inclusivity within swimming. Black lives matter in all aspects of life, and sport is fully included in this.
