After what seemed like five years rolled into one in 2020, it's hard to believe that we are now approximately halfway through 2021. We hope that our earlier summer episodes have given you all some ways to practically and intentionally think differently about small, yet impactful, decisions that we make as part of our everyday lives. But as we think of summer, we also think about the Summer Olympics. In general, we love everything about them - the athletics, the camaraderie, the national pride, the international nature. Really, we love it all. But what we don't love about the Olympics this year (besides holding it during a global pandemic) is how Black athletes, and in particular, Black female athletes, have been treated even prior to a single Olympic event happening (and, at the time that we recorded this, it's still unsure how and if events will happen as planned). We're breaking down that disparate treatment in today's episode, along with our thoughts about how best to show your support (the title is probably a spoiler alert there). Have questions, comments, or concerns? Email us at hello@dearwhitewomen.com  What to listen for: The stories of Sha'Carri Richardson, Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi of Namibia, the Soul Cap, and other stories from this year's Olympics that make it clear that Black athletes are being treated differently How the Olympics isn't really about humanity and celebration of achievement, but about chasing dollars (or whatever currency you use!). Our view of what you can do to make change: consider not watching the Olympics this year.    Where to pre-order Dear White Women: Let's Get (Un)comfortable Talking About Racism: https://thecollectivebook.studio/dear-white-women Like what you hear?  Don't miss another episode and subscribe! I don't see how getting *high would even help you in the 100m dash…. now pole vaulters, that's a different story. Weed enthusiasts have already named a new strain after her: Hundred-meter Hash.  In a move many are saying is racist, the Tokyo Olympics has banned swim caps designed for afros, aka the "Soul Cap". Why are they so afraid of that? They should be focused on banning something way worse: the soul patch. Sorry, Jeff Bezos. Virgin Galactic will send Richard Branson to space just days before Jeff gets there. Historian's say it's one small step for a billionaire, one giant leap for a hundred-billionaire. "I'm not jealous at all," said Jeff Bezos while polishing his new Richard-Branson-seeking missiles. Did you guys catch this? James Gandolfini's son Michael will soon debut as young Tony in a prequel to The Sopranos called "The Many Saints of Newark". Fans are excited to get an answer on who would win in a fight: Young Tony or Young Sheldon. Finally, the "Real Doll" company may have struck gold again, by debuting the world's first elderly sex robot, complete with "wrinkles and silver hair". Even better, it's covered through Medicaid. For that extra touch of realism, when you start to have sex with the robot, it goes into cardiac arrest.

I had the best time speaking to the incredibly talented endurance athlete Alice Dearing in this episode. Alice has some amazing achievements, such as representing GB in marathon (10km) swimming in three World Championships, and becoming the World Junior Open Water Champion in 2016. We explore Alice's swimming journey throughout the episode, and address the challenges she has faced within competitive sport, such as; mental health maintenance, the impact COVID-19 has had on training and mindset, overall time management and the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics to 2021. She also gave me some tips for open water swimming, and we investigate the universal benefits of training in the natural water. We conclude the episode by speaking about Alice's inspirational empowerment of diversity within the sport, where she is the co-founder of the Black Swimming Association and an ambassador for Soul Cap, both projects which possess passion for increasing inclusivity within swimming. Black lives matter in all aspects of life, and sport is fully included in this.
