In this episode of the Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast, host Justin Vacula engages in a deep and insightful conversation with Anna Murphy and Merlin Sutter of the band Cellar Darling. The conversation was originally recorded in 2018 and now has remastered audio. The discussion covers many topics, including their musical journey, the impact of Stoic philosophy on their work, and personal reflections on overcoming adversity, creative expression, and coping with emotions. The episode delves into the band's songwriting processes, their thematic incorporation of Stoic ideas, particularly from Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus, and the personal and collective challenges they have faced. Murphy and Sutter also discuss the philosophical underpinnings of their songs like 'Hullabaloo,' 'Challenge,' 'The Hermit,' and their unique sound that blends folk and rock. The musicians share their thoughts on the balance between intense emotional experiences and rational thought, their inspirations, and the importance of self-reflection and connection. The conversation also highlights the therapeutic aspects of music and philosophy for dealing with life's uncertainties and hardships. -- Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction to Low-Cost Travel 00:48 Special Guest Announcement 01:44 Upcoming Events and Announcements 03:31 Cellar Darling's Musical Journey 04:46 Exploring Stoic Philosophy in Music 07:27 The Song 'Challenge' and Personal Struggles 14:16 The Hermit: Love of Solitude 17:38 Rebels: Challenging Society 23:19 Honoring the Dead: A Celebration of Life 24:00 Stoic Philosophy and Grief 25:30 Friendship and Time: Under the Oak Tree 26:23 The Prophet Song and Personal Connections 27:36 Creating Stories: Star Crusher and Beyond 29:28 The Elements: Water, Fire, Wind, and Earth 31:35 Avalanche: A Monotonous Mantra 33:04 Hedonia: A Fantasy World 34:32 The Essence of Stoicism and Art 40:45 Concluding Thoughts and Future Plans -- Main website, including episode transcripts: https://hurdygurdytravelpodcast.com Referral links: https://hurdygurdytravel.com/donate-referral-links/ Join me for in-person meetups I host in Willow Grove, PA: https://www.meetup.com/phillymilesandpoints/ SubscribeStar: https://www.subscribestar.com/hurdy-gurdy-travel SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/hurdygurdytravelpodcast Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hurdy-gurdy-travel-podcast/id1489093490 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8EcIcoNU1HK4KKhQtTkAWw Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/hurdy-gurdy-travel-podcast Google Play: https://www.play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/l5bmuntd4wpvtklvg42ejg42ejg4apiu Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HurdyGurdyTravelPodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/HGTravelPodcast Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/justinvacula Copy and paste the podcast RSS feed -- http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:706382626/sounds.rss -- to listen on your favorite podcast-playing platform!

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.First, I am chatting with ANOTHER Scottish homemaker, Jillian Johnson. Technically, she was raised in Canada by Scottish parents, she moved to Belfast, Ireland for midwifery school where she met a dashing Scottish medical student who was raised in England. They got married, had a baby, and now make their home in Scotland. We have the most delightful conversation about Jillian's experience as a newbie homemaker, wife and mom. I adore her sense of humor and found myself smiling and laughing all over again as I did the editing of her segment. Then I chat with Anna Murphy who stayed home for about 5 years with her daughter then taught school for 12 years before returning home full time in 2020. The Lord really changed Anna's perspective about the importance of homemaking to draw her back home just in time for those crucial years of helping her teen daughter see the value in homemaking. With both of these ladies, we cover all the usual territory of strengths, weaknesses, expectations, fails, wins, resources and more. HAPPY PRIDE MONTH! For our June episode, Emma and Ann got a twofer! We're joined this month by Anna Murphy AND Tara Nix of Limerick musical duo T.A. Narrative. We were also joined quietly (mostly) by Maeve the dog. The conversation danced with abandon through and around the topics of activism, Eurovision, the representation of women and queer people on stages and on radio, the impact of big mad costumes and facepaint on stage, and how creative people need to "crawl out of their holes" and people generally need to "not be gowls". T.A. Narrative is a duo from Limerick, Ireland, composed of Tara Nix and Anna Murphy. The pair, who are childhood friends, have worked together under various guises, sharing the stage in Irish punk bands and touring and recording in the U.S. Starting a collaboration as T.A. Narrative during lockdown, their unique and exciting visual live show and the release of their debut E.P. 'Retro Futurism' in 2023 have firmly placed them as a must-see act. Drawing influences from post-punk, electronic, and sparkly pop music (from Fugazi to Kim Petras), they have been described as having a charming abandon and a palpable sense of freedom and joy in the music that they create (Notbad.ie). Fresh off the back of a tour with Irish electronic giants, King Kong Company, a much talked about performance at last year's Electric Picnic Festival, and having opened for the likes of Les Savy Fav, Bush Tetras, O., Le Boom & KYNSY, T.A. Narrative have just released thumping new single 'Caught Out' which will be followed by a new E.P. in the Autumn. They are booked for this year's All Together Now festival. Expect to dance your tits off. As part of our ongoing series on pornography and how it's shaping our relationships, we've heard from many of our female listeners whose attitudes and feelings towards porn vary greatly. Men are still the major consumers and producers of porn, so today we hear from some of them. Clare McDonnell is joined by the Times journalist Sean Russell, a man in his 30s, and two listeners: Jake, who is in his 40s, and also Gabriel, who is in his 60s. The three share how porn has shaped their sex and relationships.Do you keep a diary? Why and who for? Is it for yourself or for potential readers in the future? And does it allow you to express emotions that have no other outlet? These are just some of the themes explored in Secret Voices: A Year of Women's Diaries, which has been billed as the first comprehensive anthology of solely female diarists. Compiled by the historical biographer Sarah Gristwood, it features entries from over the past four centuries, from the likes of Florence Nightingale, Beatrix Potter, Audre Lorde and Emma Thompson. The government in South Korea has said the country's birth rate has fallen to a record low, despite it having spent billions on initiatives to encourage women to have more children. It dropped to 0.72 in 2023 - and for a population to hold steady, that number should be 2.1. Why are women in the country deciding not to have children? BBC journalist Yuna Ku in Seoul explains.Have you ever asked yourself: “Does my bum look big in this?" According to major UK clothes retailer, this question is no longer a bad thing. In fact, we should be aiming for it. They've taken big knickers to a whole other level, launching a new form of shapewear with bum padding, adding extra volume and curvature to your derriere. Anna Murphy is the Times' Fashion Director. She's tried out a similar model and explains her reaction.Presenter: Clare McDonnell Producer: Kirsty Starkey Studio Manager: Duncan Hannant

Are we as obsessed as ever with not looking old? It's six years since US beauty magazine Allure banned the term "anti-ageing" in its publications, and some big cosmetic brands have tried to portray a more positive attitude towards getting older. But with huge demand for so-called "tweakments" like Botox injections, does the "anti-ageing" narrative still dominate? BBC business correspondent Dharshini David and Times fashion director Anna Murphy discuss the culture of the beauty industry and what is driving people's desire to change the way they look.

The book I wanted and needed to read. Repeatedly, indirectly and directly women and the entire society at large are told that aging is bad, and it is especially an unwelcoming reality for women, but is this true? Fashion Director for The Times London since 2015 Anna Murphy recently turned 50, and in her new book (being released on May 30th in the states; in the UK it was released in March) Destination Fabulous: Finding your way to the best you yet, disagrees wholeheartedly with this false truth that women have begrudgingly or willingly accepted and explains exactly how each year, each decade can usher in more fulfillment, more life satisfaction and thus more contentment. She joined me from London last week before heading down to Mexico to take in Dior's Cruise presentation, and we had a lovely conversation about everything from the benefits of doing the hard work of getting to know yourself, how your style can bust clichés, the benefits of being age agnostic, how living our best life does physically affect our skin and visage, as well as the false promises made my anti-aging procedures, plus so much more. We begin our conversation with why she is the happiest she has ever been, and with that, I will encourage you to tune in to our conversation. I do hope you enjoy. Today's guest is one of the most stylish women I know, but I also know that she won't mind me saying, it wasn't always that way. Now Fashion Director of The Times, I first met Anna Murphy when we were both regular stalwarts of the second row at the biannual ready to wear fashion shows. She was then editor of the Telegraph magazine Stella and I was editor of Red, both magazines deemed not quite fashion enough by the fashion industry. I certainly dressed not to be seen, I think it would be fair to say the same of her. Oh how things change.Somewhere between 41 and 51 Anna went from anonymously chic editor to colourful fashion industry doyenne with cascading grey curls and a wardrobe that manages to be both outré (there's a fashion word for you) AND wearable. You go quietly into middle age if you want to, but she's not having any of it.Anna joined me in a brief pause between Paris shows to talk about her take-no-prisoners approach to ageing, how going grey was the most visible thing she's ever done and how she learnt to dress to match. She also shared her philosophy of “why not try it”, her one-word-trick to sorting your midlife personal style and why she wouldn't have surgery if you paid her. We discuss the statement released by Nicola Bulley's family following the sad news that that the body found in river Wyre had been formally identified as Nicola Bulley who had been missing for over 3 weeks. They expressed their pain on how their loved ones were treated throughout this ordeal. They called for accountability, and for another family not to go through what they had gone through. Joining Nuala is Zoe Billingham, former head of the inspectorate of Constabulary, Ellen Milazzo from Victim Support and Baroness Helen Newlove, former victim's commissioner for England and Wales. Up to 9 in 10 first-time mothers who have a vaginal birth will have some sort of tear. So, it's no wonder that tearing is a big worry for expectant mums. Marie Louise, also known as The Modern Midwife, explains to Nuala why tears happen, and what to really expect. Plus, midwife turned inventor, Malene Hegenberger, explains how she created a retractor to help her see tears better when suturing. Why are women from diverse background much less likely to be able to swim than white women? And what can be done about it? Team GB's first black female swimmer Alice Dearing helped to found the Black Swimming Association along with journalist Seren Jones – they join Nuala to discuss. As London Fashion Week draws to a close today, the Times fashion director, 51-year-old Anna Murphy, reflects on feeling like the only woman of her age in the front row who has not had work done on her face. What she calls the normalisation of ‘tweakments' is one of the topics explored in her new book Destination Fabulous. She tells Nuala about the changing trends in tweakments, why she finds the term problematic and how to embrace ageing naturally Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Lucinda Montefiore
"I try not to be reactionary and the pivoting should be based off data, not off of random ideas from across the staff, not that those aren't valuable… So, I do think there is an important difference between data driven decision making and having very reactionary decision making." - Anna Murphy While working at the Boys & Girls Club, Anna Murphy managed to land a marketing internship at an edtech company. She knew nothing about marketing, but she knew how to learn, so she set about studying every aspect of it. It didn't take long for Anna to realize that edtech was a decade or two behind every other industry. And it isn't because edtech buyers were different. It's because companies were complacent. Anna had a hypothesis: if you created great marketing programs, edtech brands could scale unlike ever before. So she set out to prove almost every edtech CEO out there wrong. And guess what: it's working. While she can't give away every secret, her favorite is quite simple, yet so underrated: hire teachers, y'all. United Way of Southwest Michigan partners with Michigan United Ways and the Kellogg Company for the second annual Summer Stock Up local food drive Summer Stock Up is a statewide in-person & virtual food drive to stock the shelves of local food banks and pantries during the lean summer months On June 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the public is encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items at: First Church of God, Life Center 2627 Niles Ave., St. Joseph Berrien County Youth Fair, Craft Barn 9122 UW HWY 31, Berrien Springs Lawrence Public Schools, Elementary Gymnasium 714 W. St Joseph Ave., Lawrence Brookside Learning Center 61662 Dailey Rd., Cassopolis In addition to the in-person food drive, UWSM is offering the community the opportunity to donate online at //uwsm.org/summer-stock-up. Having enough food is a basic challenge for so many in Southwest Michigan—especially right now, as food and gas prices and other living expenses are increasing. While we are all feeling the effects of rising inflation, those in poverty-level and ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households are experiencing it the worst. At least 1 in 8 Michiganders face hunger, and with fewer resources during the summer months, Michigan food banks see an increase of 20% for families seeking food resources between June and August. But access to food isn't the only issue—in 2019, the cost of food represented more than 20% of an ALICE family’s household survival budget. As the cost of food continues to climb, we know these Michiganders would need more than $650 million more per year to meet their food needs. “As we continue to support the needs of ALICE families throughout the state, Summer Stock Up is just one of the many initiatives that addresses the critical need to help ensure our community has access to fresh, healthy food all summer long,” said Anna Murphy, President and CEO of United Way of Southwest Michigan. “With the current rising costs of food today, more Michigan families will need the support of their local food banks and pantries—and based on the success of last year's program, Summer Stock Up has proven to make an incredible impact.” Families with children feel the impact of food insecurity even more profoundly. According to the recent ALICE in Focus: Children Research Brief, as recently as the fall of 2021, 41% of Michigan families below the ALICE threshold with children reported that sometimes or often, “children were not eating enough because we just couldn't afford enough food.” For many kids, when class lets out for the summer, they no longer have access to the nutritious breakfast and lunch they normally receive while in school. “People cannot reach their full potential if they're hungry. Kellogg's Better Days is our promise to advance sustainable and equitable access to food, including feeding 375 million people in need by the end of 2030,” says Stephanie Slingerland, Senior Director, Global Philanthropy and Social Impact at Kellogg Company. “We are proud to stand alongside United Way in a partnership that is focused on our aligned values and creating a positive impact in our communities.” The inaugural Summer Stock Up in 2021 raised more than $63,000 and collected more than 46,000 pounds of food, benefitting 220 food pantries across the state, including in Southwest Michigan. Who benefits? 40 food pantries in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties! Saleh to discuss the teacher crisis.Murphy began by talking about how she found her passion for EdTech, “Every single day I am getting to connect with teachers.” There is value, she said, in hiring people with education backgrounds in EdTech companies and one of the main reasons there is a teacher crisis right now is, in Murphy's words, “I think there's a general lack of respect towards teachers…I think that teachers are realizing that they can go elsewhere, be paid their worth, be treated like an adult, and be able to provide for their families better, be able to provide for themselves, and also be able to grow...”Co-host Saleh remarked that there is a, “Lack of support for teachers structurally all-around…teachers just don't feel respected.” Murphy agreed. The pandemic opened teacher's eyes to what else is out there in the education community outside of the classroom. Murphy remarked on how many teachers are feeling the brunt of public anger on political issues in the classroom, which led to a breaking point, “It's a broken system and no one should feel like they have to stay.”One piece of advice Murphy gives in breaking out into EdTech, is to work smarter and not harder, “There's a lot of noise out there…it's about working strategically…look for the voices of people who have done it and lean on them.” Murphy highlighted the importance and value in building new skills.Murphy said that understanding exactly what you want to do, researching those positions, and listening to the people in your life for advice is the first big step into reaching out to new heights in the EdTech community. This week's guest is Anna Murphy, a sustainability consultant specialising in the Future-Fit Business Benchmark. This is a framework that guides the pursuit of a truly sustainable society. She is currently studying an MPA in Public Policy, Public Value and Innovation at UCL.Always passionate about righting the wrongs of the world she travelled to areas where she could help. But realising that there were inherent problems in the aid industry she decided to find out how she could do her bit in her own country.Anna decided to focus her efforts on the climate crisis; educated herself, and got involved in Extinction Rebellion. The backlash was so intense and brutal that she found herself burnt out and questioning how far she needed to go and how much was enough in order to balance social compassion and self-care.After working as a business sustainability consultant and making her own personal changes for the planet she realised that the bigger picture meant policy change, so she started her MA in Public Policy.Anna is adamant that the future looks hopeful if we each take responsibility in our own way, but being an activist is the most effective charge for change.Thank you so much Anna for being a passionate driving force at the forefront of sustainability in business and policy, and for the personal impact you are making for the good of our planet. Thanks also for showing us that we can each make a positive impact towards sustainability by taking small steps and doing what we can, where we can.You can find out more about her work on her blog www.annamurph3.medium.com and follow her on Linkedin @annamurphyJoin Lou on Linkedin, or sign up to her mailing list for her newsletter and a free bite-size short course on how to be a podcast guest. Anna Murphy is a freelance consultant who supports companies to establish a systems-based approach to sustainability, ensuring their strengths are utilised and equity is achieved. She uses the Future-Fit Business Benchmark methodology to achieve sustainability goals for her clients.
Brian chats with Anna Murphy, a Latina entrepreneur and CEO of Murphy and Associates Consulting. Anna shares the wisdom that led her to build a multiple six-figure business in a year and a half. She also discusses the importance of surrounding yourself with people who believe in you, and why hitting rock bottom is worth talking about. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses have a purpose. Starting a business is challenging in and of itself, Anna said. But having a mission-driven business allows the founder to be able to overcome the inevitable challenges and keep moving forward. “There's things that come up and if you don't have a purpose everyday for why you're doing something, then it becomes kind of empty,” Anna said. “Yeah, there's money. But there has to be more than that, right?” For Anna, she sees this purpose come alive when she talks to clients and a lightbulb goes off in their heads. She knows they understand the financial information that will help them make better decisions moving forward. Surround yourself with people who believe in you. Like many guests on the podcast, Anna didn't originally set out to be an entrepreneur. She described herself as a quiet, creative person who “fell into the financial industry.” Anna started her career as a graphic designer but pivoted to corporate finance after the economic crash in 2008. After completing her master's degree, she realized corporate life just was not working for her. At the same time, she surrounded herself with other entrepreneurs. “I started seeing them building businesses and growing and doing different things, and I was like, ‘I can do this,” she said. “You start hanging around those people believing in you, and they motivate you, and they're like, ‘Yes you can do it.'” Failure is worth talking about. Anna is open about the struggles she faced in her first year of entrepreneurship. When she left her full-time job, she expected that all the time and energy she could dedicate to her own business would automatically translate to growth. But that didn't happen. “I completely failed,” she said. “Completely ran out of savings.” The experience humbled her, and she went back to work with a part-time job. After getting fired from that job a few years later, she took what she learned from her first attempt at entrepreneurship to make her second attempt successful. “Don't look down. Focus. Just get to work,” she said. “That was in July 2019, and within a year and half, I hit multiple six figures.” While Anna used to be ashamed to share how she hit rock bottom, she's since realized that it's part of her story, and that by sharing her own experiences, she can also empower other business owners. “You're going to empower someone else by actually saying that,” she said. “There's someone right now who's probably broke, completely ran out of money, and doesn't even know what they're going to do, right?” Resources + Links Murphy & Associates Consulting Girl, Let's Talk Money Brian's Social Media: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. She was raised by English and American parents and while she enjoys her tea-time, Anna is never more content than with a brush in hand and paint on her clothes. With art instilled in her from a young age, she went from musician to poet to actor, and finally landing on visual artist. Graduating with a degree in the arts in 2011, Anna set out to take over Chicago and worked her way through the many jobs that an artist may take until being able to dive full-time into her artistic endeavors. She has been a working artist for several years now and moved from canvas to concrete as she has taken to doing large murals in and around Chicago. Even during COVID times she found work in collaboration and painted two large collaborative murals. Drawing strength from the power of nature and empowered by the feminine goddess, Anna Murphy will surely continue her tapestry of art throughout the world. “You never get to the end. You are always working on yourself.” If you know personal development, then you get this. These wise words come from this week’s Dorothy and the Dealer special guests Dean and Anna Murphy, whose dulcet tones our Melbourne tribe might recognise from their morning commute to work. The radio duo jumped in the deep end with MJB a few years back and have never looked back, using what they learnt in our seminars to find their “why” and actively seek out their highest values. From designing a podcast that will delve into how celebrities overcome their struggles, to doing stand-up comedy and hustling away at their radio gig, the work truly NEVER stops. But it’s their ability to speak openly and honestly about what REAL development takes that inspires us. “The more you suppress stuff, the more it starts expressing because it needs to come out. The ones with the strongest voices against something are the pines that have the most to hide. They hide what is going on in private... Don’t waste time not living your authentic life.” So, whether you need a smile brought to your face, or a swift kick into gear, the Murphy’s story is for you!

Mycorrhizal: Futurae - Ferox – Inferius is Freedom Wilson’s new body of work which raises awareness of the endangered buttercup doubletail orchid (Diuris aequalis). Orchids have evolved highly complex ecological partnerships over millennia. Beneath the soil each plant species depends on a specific species of Mycorrhizal fungus for its existence. Little is known about the optimal environmental conditions that support these fungi, but many can only grow in healthy ecosystems. Wilson participated in botanical surveys and field research in the Kanangra Boyd Wilderness area and in snow gum habitat near the Wombeyan caves. She was guided in her research by ecologist and Saving Our Species project officer Anna Murphy from the Office of Environment and Heritage.
You're listening to the Stoic Solutions Podcast - practical wisdom for everyday life. I'm your host, Justin Vacula. This is Episode 63: Interview with the musicians of Cellar Darling. Anna Murphy (songwriter, vocalist, hurdy gurdy player, and flutist) accompanied by Merlin Sutter (drummer and songwriter) joined me for a candid, humble, and insightful conversation – often coupled with laughter – about their applications of Stoicism in private and public life. We spoke about their appreciation for Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus which led them to include Stoic themes in their music namely in their song 'Hullabaloo' formerly titled 'Tears of a Stoic' among other songs on their album 'This is the Sound.' We also explore overcoming adversity; the benefit of taking on challenges; creative expression; coping with negative emotions; balance between intense emotion and reason; self-reflection; finding meaning in life; courage; friendship, the importance of social connections; grief; death; anger; and mental health. Cellar Darling formed in Summer of 2016 out of the split of Switzerland’s most successful metal act to date, the chart-topping Eluveitie. The trio, also including, Ivo Henzi (guitars & bass), looks back on a decade of touring the world in more than 45 countries on 6 continents. After the split with their former band, the trio began working on their own songs - a unique combination of grand and heavy riffs, powerful drumming and a unique voice with the signature folky, earthy tones of the hurdy gurdy confidently fusing heavy alternative and progressive rock with strong folk influences and poetic tales – a New Wave Of Folk Rock. The release of Cellar Darling's debut album ‘This Is The Sound,’ signed to Nuclear Blast Records, received widespread critical acclaim also entering top 100 charts in Switzerland, Germany and the UK peaking at #16 in the band's home country and surpassing 1.8 million streams on Spotify alone within 6 months. Soupy Leaves Home (Dark Horse Books) Two misfits with no place to call home take a train-hopping journey from the cold heartbreak of their Eastern homes to the sunny promise of California in this Depression-era coming-of- age tale. When Pearl runs away from her abusive father, she has nowhere to go—until she stumbles upon a disguise that gives her the key to a new identity. Reborn as a boy named Soupy, she hitches her star to Ramshackle, a hobo who takes her under his wing. Ramshackle’s kindness and protection go a long way toward helping Soupy heal from her difficult past. But he has his own demons to wrestle with, and he’ll need Soupy just as much as she needs him. Praise for Soupy Leaves Home: “Soupy Leaves Home tells the story of a time no longer familiar to us—a time of living the rails and simmering Mulligan Soup, a time of chosen names and secret languages—yet a tale that anyone with a longing heart and a restless spirit can relate to. It transports you magically to a place long gone, but its tale of poverty and survival are still as relevant as they ever were—the characters may be penniless, but they are so emotionally wealthy that this book leaves you filled with warmth, hope, and love.”—Gerard Way “Castellucci’s heartfelt odyssey is a reckoning with death and identity on the tracks, brought to life by Pimienta’s patient, ever-evolving use of color. Soupy Leaves Home is for all restless souls hungry to start again.”—Nate Powell (March, Swallow Me Whole) “A charming and optimistic slice of Americana.”—Hope Larson (Wrinkle in Time, Batgirl) "I love Cecil Castellucci, she is crazy and cool and full of energy and heart, and so is all of her work. And Soupy Leaves Home may be one of her finest and most effecting works yet!”—Jeff Lemire “Soupy's journey comes alive through richly color-saturated, usually monochromatic panels that orient readers to a bygone era. Castellucci has created a strong heroine who both defies conventionality and embodies empowerment; as her transformative journey nears its denouement, she makes a resolute decision: 'I have to go and face my things or else I'll never be free' a message still highly relevant to today's world. A compelling graphic offering that explores relevant gender roles and self-identity through a historical lens.”—Kirkus Reviews “A well-researched and richly illustrated runaway tale that will appeal to fans of escapist fiction and thoughtful readers.”—Anna Murphy, Berkeley Carroll School, Brooklyn (School Library Journal Reviews) Cecil Castellucci is the author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, First Day on Earth, The Year of the Beasts, Tin Star, Stone in the Sky, and the Eisner-nominated Odd Duck. In 2015 she coauthored Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure, and in 2016 she worked on Shade, the Changing Girl, an ongoing comic for Gerard Way’s Young Animal imprint at DC Comics. Her picture book Grandma’s Gloves won the California Book Awards Gold Medal. Her short stories have been published in Strange Horizons, YARN, Tor.com, and various anthologies, including Teeth, After, and Interfictions 2. She is the children’s correspondence coordinator for The Rumpus, a two-time MacDowell Fellow, and the founding YA editor at the Los Angeles Review of Books. She lives in Los Angeles. Jose Pimienta grew up in Mexicali, Mexico, watching a lot of cartoons and listening to as much music as possible. After finishing high school, he studied visual storytelling in Georgia, where he made friends and drank a lot of coffee. Eventually, he headed back to Southern California, where he currently resides. He draws on a regular basis and still listens to as much music as he can. He also enjoys recreational walks and whistling. Sometimes he goes by “Joe.”

Continuing the theme of responsible pet ownership, this week we bring our feline friends into the spotlight and explore why they are often underappreciated and don’t enjoy the same status as dogs. Anna Murphy from Breakfast on Friday asked how she can stop her eight-month-old British shorthair cat from waking her up in the middle of the night wanting to play.
