In the world of swimming, you would be hard pressed to find a coach whose resume matches that of American Swim Coaches Association Hall of Famer Frank Busch. As a collegiate coach at The University of Arizona, his teams won 2 NCAA Championships and his swimmers won a combined 80 individual and relay national championships. He was a 6x NCAA coach of the year and 11x Pac 12 coach of the year. He retired from Arizona in 2011 and became an assistant coach for Team USA for the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, and then National Team Director for the 2012 and 2016 games. During those two games, his swimmers won 64 medals, including 33 golds, as he oversaw swimmers such as Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky.  Frank and John met at a swimming conference in Mexico City in Fall 2024 and had so many great conversations that they decided to record their thoughts on leadership, the importance of team dynamics in individual sports,  the importance of team values, being a truth teller, and developing people and not simply athletes. Enjoy, and apologies for John's bad audio.  THE CHAMPION SPORTS PARENT IS AVAILABLE ON AMAZON!! WE ARE LIVE! Gretchen had a lot of naysayers from outside of the United States. Swim fans knew she was great based on her 2024 NCAA DI Championships performance, clearly the greatest in history. Many critics felt her yards (NCAAs) to meters (Olympic pool distance) talent would not convert. Gretchen proved her critics wrong with a fantastic Olympic debut. Gretchen takes SwimSwam's Gold Medal Mel Stewart through each of her races, and she looks ahead to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Paul Stenhouse: Tech expert on the slow Olympic swimming pool in Paris, Apple's AI software

Saturday Morning with Jack Tame

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 2, 2024 5:29

The Olympic swimming pool in Paris is slow... is the tech part of the problem?  It certainly isn't helping. Only one world record had been broken as of August 1st, which the unusually shallow pool is being blamed for. It's 2.15 meters deep because when it was starting to be built in 2017, it only had to be over two meters. Now the minimum depth is 2.5 meters, but the recommendation is for 3 meters.  Also not helping: the underwater cameras. They contribute to the choppiness of the water, and also don't help the water settle between races as they continue to move and reset.    Developers are getting their first look at Apple Intelligence  The reviews are... fine? Not all the promised features have been delivered yet. One reviewer says it's a "slightly smarter Siri". There are bits of AI sprinkled throughout the Apple apps.  In the Mail app there's a new section of your inbox with AI-suggested important emails, a summarize button at the top of each email, and when you highlight text you can select "writing tools" to have AI do proofreading, make suggestions, and summarize.  The search tool in the Photos app now uses AI to understand more complicated requests. You can ask for pictures of a particular person wearing glasses or all the food you ate in Iceland, all in natural language.  But these new features might not ship with the new iPhone?  It may not make the deadline to be included. Apple does have a way to update the OS while the phone is still in the box (which is a crazy piece of tech!) so that may happen, or folks who buy a new phone will need to upgrade their software later.    LISTEN ABOVE   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ep. 377: Former Olympian Casey Converse On Lessons Learned – and Not Learned — From the 1976 Olympic Doping Scandal

The 2024 Summer Olympics are about to begin in Paris, and that event should be of interest even to those who don't much care about sports. For one thing, it's the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Olympics, also held in Paris, in which Christian missionary Eric Liddell won a gold medal. That story was famously recounted in the Academy Award winning movie “Chariots of Fire,” and the story and that movie has become a part of the lore of the modern evangelical movement. Another story unfolded 48 years ago, at the Montreal Games, in 1976. It was that year, at the height of the Cold War, that the American women's swim team, a team many called the strongest in the world at that time, went up against the East German women's team. Though the American team brought home a lot of hardware from those games, many sports historians and others believe the women of that team were robbed of their place in Olympic history by the aggressive doping program of the East Germans. Swimming World Magazine has called those Olympics “Doping's Darkest Hour.” The East German doping program eventually led to reforms in the Olympic movement. That said, if you have been following this year's Olympics coverage, you may know that a new doping scandal, involving Chinese athletes, threatens to taint this year's games. So this story of the 1976 games, which has elements of heroism, courage, leadership, and character is as relevant today as ever. And there's no better person to tell this story than Casey Converse. His book is “Munich to Montreal: Women's Olympic Swimming in a Tarnished Golden Era.” Casey had a front row seat to the controversy. He was a member of the USA Olympic Swim Team at the Montreal Olympics. He was also an American record holder in the 1650. From there, he coached at the United States Air Force Academy for 28 seasons. He was recently selected as one of the top 100 college swim coaches in the last 100 years by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches of America. He also served as a consultant for the documentary “The Last Gold,” which is a film account of the story we'll talk about today. Also, if I might insert a personal note here: Casey is a friend. My son Cole swam for the Air Force Academy's men's team during his time there, and I got to know Casey a bit. I was personally inspired by his mentorship of generations of young swimmers and future Air Force officers, including my son. I should also add that he is now battling a very serious form of cancer, and I've been able to see his character and his faith shine brightly as he faces this new challenge. It's an honor to know him, and an honor to have him on the program. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Until next time, may God bless you.
