British art historian Catherine McCormack has been casting a critical eye over the way women have been portrayed in art across the ages. Her book, Women in the Picture: Women Art and the Power of Looking aims to challenge what is depicted, what is valued and how it is seen. Dr McCormack is an independent curator based in London and also a consultant lecturer at Sotheby's Institute of Art.
Alise, Kaitlin, and Amanda discuss a spate of sexist incidents involving female athletes, from Norwegian handball players being fined for wearing shorts to a Paralympian runner chastised for not wearing shorts. They discuss the broader significance of banning swim caps made for Black athletes before pivoting to the Texas abortion law, which gives abusers a pass to harass and control women's lives by bribing residents with $10,000 to sue providers.

I am dedicating today's episode to discussing the different messages that women receive about their bodies from society and the media. We are sold these ideal body types and lifestyles, when really each body is unique and should be treated with love and respect. In this episode, I share some specific ways that society spreads a toxic message about women's bodies and size. These ideas are important to identify because they can hinder your growth and self worth. The goal of this is to open the conversation around these issues and share ways you can improve your health. 12 Week Program Waitlist: www.drbethwestie.com/waitlist
The number of illnesses that qualify as mysterious is staggering. They also predominantly affect women. In this episode, author Sarah Ramey and Physician Assistant and professor Brianna Cardenas draw from a well of wisdom as patient advocates with mystery illnesses to explore the gender inequities, biases, and systemic barriers to getting proper care. They discuss how patients must stand their ground in seeking proper care within a broken healthcare system that often tells us it's all in our heads. With no magic bullet to “slay the dragon” these women are reframing the heroes’ journey into the heroine’s journey – a process of drawing strength and wisdom from the darkness and emerging to guide others into a new paradigm that recognizes the value of being unfixed.
Emi and Diana join us to talk about the changing beauty standards throughout history and why it’s impossible to attain an aesthetic ideal when that ideal is constantly changing. We touch on Fat Phobia, the effect social media has on everyone’s psyche, and then talk about what we can do to love the body we are in.
Today we wrap up our four-part series on Cuties with an important quote from director Maïmouna Doucouré asking, what she considers to be the real question of this film: "Can we, as women, truly choose who we want to be beyond the role models that are imposed upon us by society?" We discuss this topic as well as another important observation by the director: "Isn't the objectification of women's bodies that we often see in the western culture just another form of oppression?". With so many stories resurfacing recently about how the media has failed our young women over the past years, now is the time to hold a mirror up to society and ourselves and really question what we're accepting as societal norms when it comes to our young women and men. "I still remember my dad telling me that it was fine for you to love but I just wished you loved a person from the same caste. And I guess that is when I saw that they are so deeply invested in caste. Before it was happening but it was implicit - it was not clear, there were actions and things that they were saying but now these are people that are telling me that I should marry a person from the same caste," says Priya from API Chaya, who we are in conversation with for this episode of the podcast 'Caste in the USA'. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse from an upper-caste neighbour she considered a grandfather, Priya is not unfamiliar to the perversions of trusted relationships. The policing of lower caste communities comes naturally as part of the systemic oppression set up from back home, but takes on more complex tones in the context of dealing with gender violence. For the South Asian community in the US, caste-specific dynamics have a huge part to play in how gender-based violence occurs and is dealt with. Pressure cooker relationships, as host Thenmozhi Soundarajan calls them, have maintained complicit silence around gender-based violence across caste. From coercion to remain silent, threats of deportation exemplified in cases of abusive partner dependent visas, to outright dismissal of reported assault to preserve caste honour - Priya has seen it all get worse in family circles, from both personal experiences as well as her work with API Chaya. Even as they continue to work towards opening up large conversations within the survivor power building space, it is hard to explain the connections of gender-based violence and caste to authorities in the US. Primarily accustomed to a nuclear family structure, they fail to understand the abusive power held especially in intercaste relationships. For women looking to seek financial independence, there is a need to engage with the partner as well as the state in order to attain a visa as a survivor of domestic violence. However, the threats to 'harm your family back home', coupled with a silence cultivated through the years make it nearly impossible. "We have to re-work the entire ways in which we love each other as we move towards caste abolition, and this is only one of the ways in which we will be doing it but it is such a promising way of seeing survivors building power all around the world as we shed the violence of the Brahmanical patriarchy," concludes Thenmozhi.
This week, we're flying over to POLAND to speak with sex worker and activist, Sonia Nowak. Sonia started in sex work when she was in Poland and later took those skills to London when she was going to school. There, she noticed the injustices that were occurring when it came to sex work, specifically, in regards to stripping. Are we considered as independent contractors or employees? The parameters given by the strip club she was employed at dictated what type of outfits to wear, what hours she was to work, what she could and couldn't do... wait a minute. That doesn't sound like contracting to me - that sounds like employment. Observing these details motivated her to seek out resources for her and other sex workers to organize to build a case against the club and seek to form a union because sex workers deserve to be afforded basic human rights (DAMN RIGHT!). And her involvement with activism doesn't just stop there. Sonia was also recently taking part at the recent protests in Poland surrounding the anti-abortion laws and governing women's bodies. She is an opinionated and intelligent woman and I am so glad to have connected with her and to have had her on the show! @imyourelectricgirl www.twitter.com/electricgirl666 www.facebook.com/imyourelectricgirl Additional information re: sex worker unions, gathering + supplemental resources IG: @unitedstrippersoftheworld www.twitter.com/unitedswers Sex Work Polska East London Strippers Collective History re: SW organizing in the UK Dancers are workers: Nowak v Cahndler Bars Group Ltd and the history of dancer organizing in London Fundraiser to support Polish sex workers Dziewuchy London Don't forget to RATE, REVIEW, SHARE and SUBSCRIBE! @strippedbysia @siasteph Stripped by SIA on Facebook www.twitter.com/stephsia www.stephsia.com
In this discussion with birth worker Isabella Malbin we discuss industrial and allopathic intervention in birthing, and what it means for women's relationship to their bodies. Also, do holistic practitioners also play a role in "intervention" medicine? At the end we touched on the shifting culture around gender that is effecting the next generation of young women. The book mentioned is called "Irreversible Damage" by Abigail Shrier.

Listen for free at http://inourbelly.com/beyond EPISODE SUMMARY Our story begins in 2004 when Sharon and her former wife adopt a baby girl from Japan The first nine months were both joyful and hellish and when Sharon’s former wife would travel for work, she felt both abandoned and being left to care for another child Sharon never wanted to be a mother - at least not with the tools she was carrying But at the age of 42, both Sharon and her wife felt like they could raise a child together and that it was the next right thing to do A few years later, Sharon and her former wife get a divorce which yields a 50/50 child responsibility role Sharon talks about things she “should do” as a mother like writing little notes in her daughter’s lunchbox and attending PTA meetings -- all things that felt unnatural A book by Dr. Christiane Northrup called Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom (https://amzn.to/2VoX2HZ) ultimately gave Sharon relief to drop so much of the guilt and shame she was carrying because she was not the mother society pressures her to be It takes a village to raise a child Sharon was in a new relationship with a man she called her “good Dad” Her daughter entering her teen years proved particularly challenging as Sharon further realized she wasn’t “the parent” or “the loving guide” Sharon decides that she needs to move and put distance between her and her daughter to reconnect with herself This space reinforced Sharon’s resolve to stand on her own, in her truth, to heal her past and what happened between her own mother and her In time, the healing process transforms Sharon and her relationship with her daughter improves Sharon can cherish her daughter because she cherishes herself QUOTABLES “Well, the first formative nine months were pure hell. Our daughter, she was a joy, and she didn't sleep through the night.” “I didn't recognize it at the time, but in the dynamic between my partner and myself, I was essentially the child. And so when she would leave, on an unconscious level, it felt as though, number one, I was being abandoned. And number two, I was being abandoned in the care of yet another child. So it was a child being left to take care of a child, even though I was 40-some years old.” “Challenging. Confrontational. Heart-breaking. Joyful. Delightful.” “It was almost as though the the poison had infected her. The poison of this feeling of not being lovable, of not being worthy of receiving love.” “Well, when I was trying to be that mother, that society tells us we should be, that writes the lovely little notes in the lunchbox, and that makes late night snacks for her slumber parties, and hosts play dates, and does PTA and hosts the Girl Scout meetings, and all of those things, I thought I should be those things. I didn't know that there was any other concept of how to be a mother. And when I heard that, it gave me such a feeling of permission and it allowed me to drop away so much of the guilt and the shame I had been carrying about not being able to be the kind of mother that society told me I was supposed to be. . And coming back to the idea of it taking a village, it truly does, because to put all of that responsibility on one or two people is way beyond what we should have to carry.” “She was coming into her teen years and, you know, doing the normal teen belligerent thing. And I hated the way I interacted with her, because I was like another teenager in there fighting with her. I wasn't the parent. I wasn't the loving guide. I wasn't the steady presence for her that I wanted to be, as a mother.” “My daughter felt very abandoned by my moving away.It was about needing to be able to stand on my own, in my own truth, so that I could heal my past, my life, and ostensibly, heal what happened between my mother and me, and her mother and her, and generations before.” “Now that I'm not pressuring myself to be a mom that I'm not, I've been able to grow in the truth of what I came here to this planet to do, which I am coming to know, is as this spiritual conduit, and teacher and guide, and I wasn't able to access that piece before.” “And until I recognized my own lovability, I wasn't going to be able to do that with her, and now, I can cherish her because I cherish myself.” “I would say, "Sweetheart, this is not about you. Your mother is clearly trying so hard and yet she doesn't have the tools herself. She never learned how to parent herself, and all of the rage and all of the unhappiness that you're experiencing today is part of an old, old, unhealed story. And one day my prayer is that you'll be able to come to a place of forgiveness of yourself, and your mother, and all of the other pieces and parts that tell us that we're not worthy, that we're not lovable, that we have to do something or be something to prove our worth, because none of that is true, that you are worthy and lovable just exactly as you are." “Because that is where it all starts, is learning to nurture and nourish that kid that never got it as a child, because we can't give from an empty well.” TRANSCRIPT AVAILABLE GUEST RESOURCES Living with Meraki - Sharon’s podcast https://www.livingwithmeraki.com/ Hire Sharon - Voiceover work https://www.sharoneisenhauervoiceover.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/livingwithmeraki Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sharon-eisenhauer-9a52b268/ BOOK Sharon mentions: “Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom.” By Dr. Christiane Northrup https://amzn.to/2VoX2HZ RESOURCES Hey heroes, a listener reached out to me and asked if I could provide some guidance and resources to help her understand and embrace her own Belly of the Beast pattern coming up in her own life. Welcome my friend, colleague and all-around a bad ass rockstar, Julia Carias-Linares. Julia is a former TV executive at A&E Network. I brought Julia on for plenty of reasons, namely that she is a Latina in media and entertainment and is the perfect person to join me for today’s soapboxing on the policing and shaming of Brown & Black women's bodies, a la J.Lo and Shakira's Super Bowl halftime show. We also get into Gayle King's and Snoop Dog's very public beef. Did she violate culture code? Was his apology enough? Also! Morehouse has a polo team! We talk this week with Emma Akpan about how certain Black religious institutions expect Black women to conform to white supremacist ideals -- especially when it comes to sexuality, motherhood and family structures. She explores it in her recent essay, "I’ve Lost Faith in the Way the Black Church Polices Women’s Bodies." And October 14-18 was the YWCA's Week Without Violence -- part of a global movement within the organization to end gender-based violence. YWCA CEO Alejandra Y. Castillo joins us to explain that work.
In this episode, Meghan Murphy speaks with Dr. Jen Gunter about common myths surrounding women's bodies and her new book, The Vagina Bible.
This episode is part of the EmBODY Worth series, a series here on Embodied Soul Radio where I explore how shame & worthiness impact the relationship women have with their bodies. In this series, you will receive channeled teachings, my first hand experience and practices to help you heal your relationship with your body. In this episode, I talk all about worthiness and how women plug their worth into their body. What I jam on: The cultural, societal and spiritual reasons women plug their worth into their bodies and what they can do with them What the ideal, worthy body looks like and why that’s a tiny box for our authentic selves to fit into How toxic masculine culture has taught us to view our bodies as objects that should be criticized, prioritize male please and more How to begin shifting your view of worthiness so you can source it from within, while continuing to hold space for shame, guilt and anger Learn more about the Divine Embodied Mastermind Join my FREE community, Vibrant Souls Collective. So much to talk about today and it is all to do with women's bodies. After many states have made it ILLEGAL for women to have an abortion I wanted to really deep dive into women's health and hormones. The positive news story brings you my opinion on the criminalization of abortion, as well as a call to action for all of us around positive news. My discoveries for this week are about supplements that I currently take and think are important for female and health, as well as a few to support an active lifestyle. Finally I finish off with a very simplified breakdown of female hormone fluctuations as they occur within a typical 28-day cycle. Welcome to the third episode in the # I Had an Abortion series! I’m honored that Dr. Christiane Northrup agreed, graciously and enthusiastically, to share with us today her wisdom on this taboo topic. She’s also one of my personal sheroes whose shoulders I stand upon to be the woman I am and do the work I’m doing today. Listen in to learn: * Dr. Northrup’s experiences of performing abortions, and why she stopped * How the Patriarchy has co-opted women’s fertility and erotic energy * Ways to re-own feminine, erotic energy by running your pelvic bowl like a business * Why codependency is really how every woman learns to behave early on– and how abortion challenges this * About her new book, which explores the dance between “energy vampires” and empaths * How women’s silence around abortion is perpetuating its stigma, and how we can shift this now * What her current, growing edge is * Her vision of where we’re going next as women This episode is a keeper! I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. Twas the night before book launch And all through the world Millions were anticipating The Magnesium Miracles book pages to unfurl. The pages were typed with precision And care In hopes that The Miracle would reach everyone, everywhere! And, so it goes. Yes, itâs the night before The Magnesium Miracle, 2017 Edition, launches itself out into the world via Amazon books â hurled out into the cosmos doing the most good for the highest number of individuals and families by telling the amazing story of how we became so magnesium deficient and what we can do about it. In the press release that accompanies the book to all reviewer sites and advanced readers we wrote this: Scurvy is a deficiency of vitamin C complex and is resolved by eating fruits and vegetables or taking a vitamin C supplement. We all know how important vitamin C is but apparently, itâs only active as a cofactor in eight enzymes. Magnesium is 100 times more powerful being responsible for the activity of 700-800 enzyme processes yet the public has not been fully educated on its benefits. In The Magnesium Miracle 2017 Edition Dr. Carolyn Dean, the world-renown expert on magnesium deficiency, revises her own, original work with new information and over 600 medical references as to the efficacy and imperative nature of magnesium in the body. In a pre-sale circulation, Random House has forwarded advance copies of this powerful presentation to professionals and practitioners around the world. Consider these powerful comments from readers: "I agree with Dr. Dean: Everyone could benefit from extra magnesium supplementation. Comprehensive and clear, even a beginner will find the pathway to relief is doable when they read The Magnesium Miracle and learn about obtaining optimal dosages." --Helen Saul Case, assistant editor of the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, and author of Orthomolecular Nutrition for Everyone, The Vitamin Cure for Womenâs Health Problems, and Vitamins & Pregnancy: The Real Story. âDr. Carolyn Dean has been light years ahead of her time when it comes to the crucial mineral magnesium and its many life-saving uses. Her work is a gift to humanity. And I highly recommend it.â --Christiane Northrup, M.D., ob/gyn physician and author of the New York Times bestsellers: Goddesses Never Age: The Secret Prescription for Radiance, Vitality, and Wellbeing, Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, and The Wisdom of Menopause "The Magnesium Miracle is a miracle unto itself! Every chapter has been updated with the most fascinating information. Most people have no clue that magnesium is needed for several hundred reactions in the body, and magnesium is easily depleted, especially in our stressful times. Additionally, magnesium is difficult to get in our food supply because our soil is so depleted of this important mineral. I will ask most of my patients to read this latest version; so many have atrial fibrillation and magnesium is intimately involved in the regulation of this heart condition that is reaching epidemic levels. This is brand new information to me and to most health care practitioners. Thank you, Dr. Dean, for updating this most important topic." --Barbara Schlitz, RN, MS, CN Tonight on our internet based radio show, we'll be talking with Dr. Carolyn Dean about The Magnesium Miracle, 2017 Edition along with a wide range of health topics and safe solutions. Be sure join us this evening for another wonderful, information packed broadcast.
Today’s violent conflicts and extremism of many kinds center on women, too often as victims. And the work women do for peace and their agendas are often ignored. Greater understanding is needed among policymakers and scholars, especially as to how religious beliefs, practices, and institutions shape attitudes toward violence against women and toward women's peacebuilding roles. The Berkley Center's Katherine Marshall highlighted her journey to shine light on the often unseen women working for peace with religious inspiration, recounted in Women, Religion, and Peacebuilding: Illuminating the Unseen. Chicago Theological Seminary's Susan Thistlethwaite shared insights from her new book, Women's Bodies as Battlefield: Christian Theology and the Global War on Women, on how this “unseen work” must become both more visible and central in global movements to prevent and reduce global violence, especially violence against women. José Casanova served as a discussant.
Dr. Christine Northrup on Women's Bodies and Women's Wisdom by Lifestyle of Reverence
Today's episode is with the very wise Dr. Christiane Northrup. She's an OBGYN who has been the leader in holistic female health since the early 1990s. She's been featured on Oprah several times and her many best selling books have helped shift people's approach to health (like the bigger picture 'health' that expands beyond the physical), especially for women. For long-time pod listeners you may remember that I interviewed her daughter Kate Northrup as one of my first guests on the show. Dr. Northrup is so wise and gives such interesting information about sex, pleasure, and relationships as well as so much more in this episode. In our conversation we cover her background and her past work, why it has been so important and how that has led her to the work she is doing now and her latest book she wrote. We cover her wisdom gained on 'getting older', the changes in the medicine and wellness industry, the importance of embracing sexuality, the interconnectedness (in our bodies and beyond). She lists so many good resources in this episode, especially books, so be sure to check out the show notes below. If you have any questions for Dr. Northrup or myself tweet at us or reach out to us in the Facebook Group here.
