It was such a joy to be able to speak with one of my running inspirations, Nick Butter, on the podcast today!I have been following Nick since his running the world challenge: in which he ran a marathon in every country (196) in the world over a period of just 23 months! He also hold 8 world records, has ran the length of Italy in 100 days (1 marathon a day for 100 days), and has ran around the perimeter of Britain in 120 days (roughly 2 marathons a day!). We discuss the physical content of these challenges, but also take time to explore the mental, logistical, and financial difficulties these challenges pose. Nick also explains how the challenge changed him fundamentally on a personal level, and inspired him to live life every day with conscious intent and purpose.Throughout this episode we also speak about Nick's passion for cold water swimming, his charity the 196 foundation, his experience of van living, his movement from a job in finance to what he does today, as well as discussing the future challenges Nick has in the coming years.Nick is both incredibly inspiring and humble, and it was so amazing to be able to speak to him in this episode. It was so great to have a conversation with Ben West this week on the podcast, where we talk all things mental health! After tragically losing his younger brother to suicide, Ben began campaign for increasing awareness, promoting positive change, influencing the government, and altering laws within the mental health space. Mental health is universal in its impact and effects everyone, however there is still a very clear lack of funding and education in order to tackle the huge struggles being faced by thousands. We discuss the consistent tendency to separate mental and physical health issues, when in fact they so often exist as intertwined, and need to be treated with equal importance. At present Ben is focusing particularly on universities and schools as social spaces in which mental health care is needed more than ever, with the largest killer of teenagers horrifically remaining to be suicide. Conscious to not simply call for change but offer suggestions, Ben and I highlight the specific solutions he is hoping to take to government in order to produce active change and save lives. We additionally explore the power of therapy as preventative medicine (but simultaneously the serious need for increased support in this area), dropping out of university, how Ben used positive campaigning to heal from his grief, the positive and negative aspects of social media, and an in-depth discussion surrounding diet culture, eating disorders, and the fitness industry. I had such a fabulous conversation with the lovely Livy, a fellow yoga teacher, for this podcast episode! Livy and I's respective yoga journeys have been aligned in various ways, such as; discovering the power of yoga as a form of movement to enhance sport when we were younger, both being young teachers who have balanced teaching alongside university, and navigating online teaching during a global pandemic. It was really interesting to learn about Livy's teacher training experience in Italy, the huge learning curve undertaken as one takes the steps from student to teacher, the growth experienced from being pushed out of our comfort zones, and the vulnerability required to learn more about ourselves at a deeper level. Livy and I take time to acknowledge how yoga moves far beyond the physical aspect, and how we can use it as a transformational tool in how we live our lives and form our relationships. We additionally consider how yoga offers us access to explore how we relate to our physical body, and how cultivating a physical awareness practice translates to awareness of emotion. Yoga draws us to speak with compassion for our bodies, cultivates safe space, and allows for freedom to explore your body and your movement. We both hope to emphasise the importance of spreading the positivity and inclusivity of practice. From this we touch on the highly important requirement for cultural appreciation, not appropriation, and the responsibility as a teacher to honour the ancient roots of the tradition whilst sharing it with the world. Lastly, Livy and I discuss career paths and navigating the transition from university into the working world. We speak about avoiding toxic productivity and external pressure to head down a linear pathway, and the importance of seeking what gives you energy and positivity. We offer a gentle reminder to trust yourself and your intuition! However, at the time of recording she was still in her final month of training, so in this episode we discuss the importance of planning training sessions, scheduling recovery practices, our mutual love of Strava, trusting the process, and maintaining a positive mindset! Annie discovered her love of sport at school, with a greater focus on team sports, and we discuss the power of sport as a space to be enthusiastic and competitive, whilst building teamwork and leadership skills. We also explore where Annie started to have a more significant relationship with running, whilst volunteering at a children's home in Kenya with the charity Restart Africa. We also address Annie's exciting upcoming adventure beginning in September at Sandhurst (Royal Military Academy), where she will be training as an army officer. Annie got involved with CCF (Combined Cadet Force) at school, however she did not necessarily envisage being a member of the army as a future career path. However, at Edinburgh University she joined the OTC (Officer Training Corps) society, which became a huge part of her university experience, as well as demonstrating that being a member of the army offered a viable future career. We begin the episode by exploring how Mhairi discovered running and how she became successful in the athletics field. We speak about how running can be a space to channel anxiety and emotional stress, which can be releasing but also lead to a complicated and problematic relationship with the sport. Mhairi suffered numerous illnesses, including a chronic chest infection, which was very challenging both mentally and physically. It was the space and time the COVID-19 pandemic allowed from competitive running that gave Mhairi the opportunity to reflect and begin to nourish both her body and mind. We speak about the importance of prioritising our mental wellbeing, the power of therapy, and healing practices such as yoga, as means to allow us to build balance in our lives, and allow our passions to have a place in our lives, but not be controlling. We go on to discuss the fantastic and necessary petition and letter to UKA calling for a zero tolerance policy regarding abuse towards athletes. The petition has been incredibly impactful, yielding 2000 signatures, being supported by 800 clubs, and reaching 5 countries. Mhairi is a deeply passionate advocate for the safety of athletes, and generating incentives for change in order to ensure they are protected from abuse and harassment. We all had a big year of firsts despite the pandemic! Becky travelled around Asia and Australia before starting her first job post university in March, where she quickly needed to adapt to working virtually and building a productive and self-motivated working-from-home routine.Tash started her first year at Edinburgh University, after completing her final year of school very suddenly and prematurely. It has been very challenging for her to be in first year of university in COVID conditions, however she has been very strong throughout the difficulties she has faced of self-isolation, home sickness and working on her mental health. We also speak about how lockdown allowed us to grow as a family unit, but also personally, and it was over lockdown that yoga and open water swimming began to play a bigger part in our lives! It is clear throughout this episode that sport has been a massive element within our lives, and that it continues to be! All our younger years were filled with countless sports; athletics, cross country, swimming, netball, hockey, lacrosse, gymnastics and more! Becky's love of team sport was explicated by her captaincy of the 1st Lacrosse Team at Oxford University, where she was also the president of Atlanta's, the university society empowering female sport at all levels. Me and Becky also competed in an ultra-adventure race together in 2019, in very testing weather conditions. Tash started her journey with sport and fitness through dance, with her love of lacrosse and the gym becoming stronger towards the end of school. I loved talking to my lovely friend Katie this week all about working through long-term chronic injury, and maintaining a positive mentality and commitment throughout. Katie had a very sporty childhood, and this carried on throughout school and university, where she was actively involved in netball and rugby respectively. This allowed sport to become a large part of her life, and a distinctive element of her identity. It was thus very challenging for Katie to suffer a serious foot injury in one of her first rugby sessions at Edinburgh University, which, after a difficult period of diagnosis, required surgery for a full recovery. Katie and I relate through our individual experiences with invasive surgery, as well as post-operative recovery and rehabilitation. We note the fact that long-term injury is both a mental and physical hardship, and place emphasis on the importance of speaking openly to friends and family, maintaining a positive mindset, practicing patience and journaling thoughts and patterns to deepen our healing awareness. Injury is a challenge that numerous athletes face, and our sense of identity can often get bound up in our passions, meaning that when we lose this aspect of life it can be extremely difficult. Katie and I discuss how injury allowed us to explore new passions in our lives, with Katie becoming involved in Acapella and re-discovering her passion for musical performance. It was this lack of balance that influenced Sophie to reconsider her path, and re-align with what allowed her to feel fulfilled. This is where Sophie discovered and fell in love with the empowering practice of yoga and the associated holistic benefits found when we connect to our breath, still the mind and move the body. We address Sophie's transition from student to teacher, in which she completed her RYT in Sydney and endured an experience of deep self exploration and growth, before exploring how lockdown affected Sophie personally and professionally in terms of her adaption to living in Bali and the birth of her subscription channel. Exercise is a proven healer for those struggling with stress, anxiety and depression, and Anna and Kuda seek to advocate these benefits through their brand and make exercise accessible and inclusive for all. We also speak about the difficulties the business faced as a result of lockdown, however, this period allowed for a means to reflect on the potential future of the business, and an opportunity to adapt and overcome challenges. The future is very exciting for Bound, as they are launching a virtual studio, which offers a wide range of classes, a wellbeing section and a sociable online community. I am so proud to say that I am joining the Bound team as their yoga instructor, and will be doing a weekly restorative class! I am looking very much forward to joining Anna and Kuda on their mission to promote the positivity that fitness offers us on all levels, and sweating towards a stronger mentality. On this week of the podcast I spoke to the lovely David Slack! David was a Men's Health Cover Model Finalist and supplement brand ambassador in his early 20s, and this allowed for deep exposure to the negative impacts of the fitness industry, including; toxic masculinity, obsession with the gym and body dysmorphic disorder. David speaks candidly about uplifting men's mental health by using our voices to create a space of vulnerability in which we can spread positive messages. In his mid 20s, David's perspective on life shifted with the birth of his son, and he realised that his excessive focus on extrinsic validation was not spiritually fulfilling. He began a journey of self discovery, re-aligning with his love for the natural world in the fells, and uncovering healing practices such as cold water exposure, Wim Hof breath work, meditation, intermittent fasting and stoicism. We acknowledge the fact that life is not a journey to get somewhere in the future, but that happiness is within us in the present! I had the best time speaking to one of my closest friends, Talia, for this episode. We have been friends for over a decade and both possess a passion for health and wellness, which Talia developed in her mid teens whilst discovering the benefits of yoga and meditation. Throughout this episode we address our daily and weekly practices that make us feel our best. We talk about the holistic benefits of movement, finding a balance between restorative and high intensity, attaining space mentally and physically and feeling a sense enjoyment rather than punishment whilst exercising. We also highlight the emotional and spiritual benefits we feel when training in the natural world. We continue to speak about taking daily mindful moments in the form of activities such as; digital detox, meditation, painting and journaling, in order to seek presence in our day. Our conversation concludes as I speak to Talia about the love we both have for exploring nutrition and cooking, what inspired Talia to transition to vegetarianism, and how this aligns with her masters degree in Environmental Technology at Imperial College. I am beginning Season 2 of my podcast by speaking to the amazing Sabrina Sinha. Sabrina and I competed in biathlon, athletics and cross country together when we were younger, and she has gone on to accomplish many incredible achievements in the athletic field, representing GB & NI in events such as; the European Youth Championships, the World Youth Games and the European Cross Country Championships. In the peak of her condition, Sabrina began to suffer with endometriosis in mid 2016, an extremely painful condition which significantly impacted her life as an athlete and also personally. In this episode, Sabrina and I discuss the difficulty of working with the 'invisibility' of mental and physical illnesses, coping with internal and external doubt, and cultivating resilience and gratitude through adversity. Sometimes we need to take a big step backwards to allow us to move forward in our lives, and Sabrina is an incredible example of someone who held on to hope and didn't lose faith in her individual athletic ability despite challenging circumstances. Sabrina is presently loving running more than ever, achieved a personal best time this summer for the first time in four years and is working towards her long term goal of achieving a senior GB vest! We explore Adelle's relationship with running from a young age to now, and discuss; her inclusion in the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, challenges that have allowed Adelle to grow as an athlete, the importance of maintaining love and appreciation for our sport, respecting and strengthening our bodies, and staying present both in our lives and sport. We also speak about how COVID-19 has shifted the running world, and discuss the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics to 2021. We go on to address Adelle's exciting work with the Women's Sports Trust Unlocked Program, which is raising visibility and increasing the impact of female sport. Adelle is also an ambassador for Dementia UK, the British Dyslexia Association and FitrWoman, where she is using her platform to pursue positivity.
