MC is closing down 2022 with a one-hour special -- a breezy, somewhat geeky, opinionated, and taped-live-in-the-studio conversation between host Jeff Martin and producer Scott Gregory. The discussion topic is outstanding LP covers as rendered by known and/or notable artists. Kind of a long title, of course, but you get the idea -- and it's a pretty fun listen. With a few tangents, yes, but with lots of tasty music clips as well. Kick back, relax, and turn it up.

Cassandra Jones is an Ojai artist with a list of exhibits and permanent collections that would go on for days. Most proximately, she is the first artist-in-residence at Taft Gardens, the acclaimed westside Mediterranean flora showcase. She is also the wife of Wilco keyboardist Mikael Jurgensen and a mother, a task made harder by quarantine confinement. We cover a lot of ground in our talk - the dawn of modern design, including the Bauhaus movement, that emerged from the pandemic of 1918 and its lessons for today, working and creating during the current pandemic, the Renaissance, Greece and Los Angeles. Mostly we discuss our growing anticipation for what comes next - the feeling that Ojai is about to burst into bloom after this hard year. Among our references: Derek DelGuadio's amazing show on Hulu, "In & Of Itself," with its incredible illusions, sleight-of-hand and storytelling that transcends description; Boccacio's "Decameron," Vasari's "Lives of the Saints," and Andrew Bird. On this episode, in the wake of India's 71st anniversary as a republic, we'll speak about the farmers' protests that have been raging across the country for more than two months now in opposition to the three farm laws enacted in September 2020. I speak to Shweta Bhattad, a farmer and visual artist, performer, sculptor and founder member of the Gram Art Project collective, a group of farmers, artists, and other members of the community based in her village of Paradsinga in Madhya Pradesh. With a focus on issues of women's safety, education and the female body, Shweta works with agricultural materials and roots her artistic practice in the context of rural cultivation as a political, social and economic mode of life. She has exhibited widely, including at the Vancouver Biennale in 2014 and at KHOJ, New Delhi in 2017 as part of Evidence Room, a retrospective of a five-year public art initiative called Negotiating Routes: Ecologies of the Byways. Along with her co-founders of the Gram Art Project, Shweta won the FICA Public Art Grant in 2015 for India's first land art festival, the Gram Dhara Chitra Utsav. On today's episode, we discuss her artistry and farming work as well as the Gram Art Project's initiatives, against the backdrop of the farmers' protests. It is impossible to separate the workings of the art world – and what these institutions deem valuable — with the compounding racist, sexist, and classist ideas that run through American society. For artists who identify with the pan-ethnic category of Latinx, institutional marginalization in the contemporary art world brings forth urgent questions around the politics of identity, the marketing of ethnicity, and the future of arts institutions. To unpack these dynamics, we spoke to cultural anthropologist and NYU professor Dr. Arlene Davila, about her new book, "Latinx Art: Artists, Markets and Politics" from Duke University Press. Today’s reading was edited and adapted from The Springs of Joy by Robert F. Horton, published in 1915. There is a higher truth. There is a realm of reality which is lifted above the things perceived by our senses and the experiences of human life. There is a joy and light and music in the waters, which do not rise within the city but come from the eternal hills beyond. It is that kind of everlasting joy which I would like to talk about today. It must be evident to everyone that we can only maintain joyfulness by living above the actual facts and events of human life. If we are immersed in them (completely immersed), there cannot be perpetual joy. There may be an occasional touch of pleasure. There may even sometimes be rich, transient delights. But human life is so constructed of cares and sufferings and sorrows that (if we are to live completely immersed within it) perpetual joy is impossible. Very few days can pass for any of us without cares and anxieties, even about the mere way in which we are to live. Complications of business; distractions; intrusions; the worries of the household; a thousand things come pressing in upon us every day and disturb our peace. The apprehension of the future, the anxiety for those we love, things which are perfectly natural and inevitable, will keep care always seated behind us. Therefore, it is evident that joy cannot be perpetual unless it is drawn from a source that is above care. Now, I hear someone saying, “How is it possible to rejoice if death comes, and those whom we love are taken from us? What possibility is there of joy? Joy cannot be lasting when disease and death are always within reach.” Well, with that being true, it must be perfectly evident that if joy is to be perpetual it must be derived from a source that is also entirely above both death and disease. But now I hear someone saying that there are also sorrows — sorrows often much keener than cares or physical pains or even bereavements. Sorrows enter into most human lives — hopeless, irreparable sorrows. We miss all we desired; we are disappointed in every plan and scheme; we feel the burden of all this unintelligible world; we listen to the low, sad music of humanity until it seems to move the soul to perpetual tears....

In the studio we have OC Jenn (@skeeterhornacek on IG) to help us wrap up a few motor-related issues. In this episode we wrap up: 1. The motor challenge - Even though Chris won the motor challenge 4 -1, he still wanted to pull out some finishing moves (a-la Mortal Kombat) and smash my already pulverized list of "zany" motors to bits. I'll allow it. This week the NR500/NR750 wheelies right over the 1921 Megola radial engined "motorcycle". 2.As EICMA wraps, we'll talk about a couple of bikes that we have no idea about. With IMS coming up next week, we'll have more for you after that. 3.The inaugural and penultimate SoCal motorcycle event rolled through town- Twisted Throttles took over Ramona/Barona in San Diego County. We were there taking in all of the festivities, and we'll give you a wrap up of what went down. There were RWYB Drags, Flat Track, lots of vendors, awesome camping, rural rides, classy Burlesque, Music, BMX, etc. Let's not forget one of the most important components - the artists that make Creative Riding, well...creative!
