Classic Compilation Albums Review: Full Tilt, by K-Tel Records 1981

The Sonic Collective

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2025 41:23

Welcome to the Sonic Collective, a music podcast that explores a different album or musical concept each month, diving deep into its history, context, and impact on the music industry. Join hosts Alain DuPuis, Scott Coates and Darren Scott, along with Scott Gregory, as they share their thoughts, insights, and personal connections to the music, inviting listeners to discover new perspectives and appreciation for some of the greatest albums of all time. Darren Scott reminisces about compilation albums and the group's original rule against reviewing compilations or best-of albums, but acknowledges exceptions. The podcast delves into the history of compilation albums, particularly those from K-Tel Records, founded in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1962 by Philip Kives. Kives became renowned for compilation albums featuring diverse hits across various genres. He started the infomercial craze in 1962 and applied direct marketing to music, leading to the popularity of compilation albums in the 70s and 80s. Darren shares his memories of compilation albums from his childhood, particularly the album "Full Tilt," a Canadian release with a U.S. version that differed significantly. He explains the Canadian content law that required a percentage of music played on the radio to be Canadian, which helped the Canadian music industry grow. The members discuss their experiences with compilation albums, highlighting the diversity of genres and artists featured. They mention standout tracks like Diana Ross's "Upside Down," Kenny Loggins's "I'm All Right," and the Irish Rovers' "Wasn't That a Party." They also touch on the influence of British culture on Canadian music and the eclectic mix of songs on the album. The podcast concludes with a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of compilation albums, their nostalgic value, and their role as time capsules of popular music. The hosts share their ratings for the album "Full Tilt" and introduce the next album for review, "Hit Express."

Hosts Arielle Davis and Kolby Webster introduce this episode of Focus: Black Oklahoma, our second broadcast. This originally aired on KWGS in March of 2020. In our first story, we learn what Hunger Free Oklahoma is doing to keep children across the state fed amongst the many disruptions of the COVID 19 crisis. Executive Director Chris Bernard takes us through the connections from food insecurity to the school to prison pipeline, health outcomes, college and career readiness, and disease prevention. Find out more at mealsforkidsok.org & hungerfreeok.org.With the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Anniversary on the horizon, and Mayor G. T. Bynum's commitment to uncover the mass graves that resulted from the massacre. Many Tulsans are experiencing polarized responses for how the city can move forward in a way that honors descendants and Black Tulsans who live with the aftermath of a destroyed community. Crystal Patrick speaks with Rev. Robert Turner (who was at historic Vernon AME Church at the time the story aired) about the complexities. Allison Ikley-Freeman is running for re-election in Oklahoma State Senate District 37. District 37 includes parts of Jenks, Sand Springs, and Tulsa. Ikley-Freeman was first elected in 2017 during a special election. With deep roots in Tulsa, Ikley-Freeman's parents are McLain grads who still live in Sperry, Ikley-Freeman spent formative years in Turley. [As of the publication of this remastered podcast, Ikley-Freeman now goes by Taten Freeman]Richard Baxter, also known as Negro Spiritual 121, is a formerly justice involved paralegal and activist. who has recently embarked on a unique campaign to help North Tulsa residents. Continuing our international coverage of intimate partner violence, we explore simple solutions to combat the issue. Here is Kristi Eaton reporting from a Somalian region in Ethiopia. Could discussion over tea help prevent intimate partner violence in refugee settings? That's what two researchers, Dr. Vandana Sharma and Dr. Jennifer Scott, from Harvard University schools are trying to find out.Musically, there are two worlds in Tulsa. The Tulsa sound, Leon Russell, J. J. Cale, and Paul Benjamin. Then there's the soul, composed of rhythm and blues, a southern touch of spirit, of call and response, and harmonious ballads. Talent, like the Gap Band, Full Flava Kings, and Fay and Bobby Moffett all of whom represent some of the artists not given the same invitation to the Tulsa Sound table. Written Quincy considers this in the second installment of his series on performing artists in Tulsa, discrimination, and what he calls the Brown Code.Just Mercy, directed by Destin Daniel Creighton, is a film and number one bestselling true story of a man, Walter McMillan, portrayed by Jamie Foxx, who was wrongly convicted and incarcerated in 1980s Alabama. Through this story we find out about the Equal Justice Initiative, founded by the book's author Bryan Stevenson, played by Michael B Jordan. Other stand out performances include Herbert Richardson, portrayed in the film by Rob Morgan, and Oklahoma's own Tim Blake Nelson's performance of Ralph Myers. Hosts Arielle Davis and Kolby Webster introduce Focus: Black Oklahoma in this, our first broadcast originally aired on KWGS in February of 2020. Webster kicks of the show examining how gentrification, eminent domain, big strategic land buys and more are affecting Tulsa's downtown and adjacent neighborhoods with Becky Gligo, the housing policy director for the city of Tulsa mayor's office, touch on the basics of connecting neighbors, organizing, the characteristics of strong neighborhoods, and addressing their concerns. Public discourse about immigration often suggests that DACA recipients are only people who entered the U.S. unlawfully from Central America. While nearly 700,000 reported DACA recipients are from Central American countries, nearly 100,000 are not. Approximately 5,000 are from countries in Africa. While the conversation can be contentious, not every immigrant has the same backstory or point of origin, as we hear in this next piece from Anissa West. Listen to the moving, true story of a formerly incarcerated woman and how she is working to change the prison system for other women. The state of Oklahoma leads the nation in the number of incarcerated women. Crystal Patrick brings us this piece.Mass incarceration is a national crisis. Oklahoma incarcerates more men and women than any other state. Tulsa introduced legislation to reduce the rates at which black Tulsans are arrested and incarcerated. Mika Nicole brings us a story on what Oklahoma is and is not doing on the municipal level to address this issue. When discussing incarceration, things can sometimes become overwhelming and abstract-- because we're talking about numbers, statistics, and raw data. We now move away from the abstraction to introduce you to two Black men who were incarcerated for over 20 years for crimes they did not commit. Negro Spiritual 121 has the story.Next, the first in a series of stories from contributor Kristi Eaton on the power of podcasting to transform torn communities. She speaks with Somali refugees and the Harvard professors behind a newly created podcast.Kojo Asamoah Caesar has entered his name into the District 1 Congressional race. If elected, he would become the first Black person to hold that office. Kojo discussed his plans to strengthen communities by retaining untapped talent with Focus Black Oklahoma's Bracken Klar.Over the last few years Black women across the nation are starting more businesses than any other group. In Tulsa, they are opening businesses in the historic Black Wall Street District. Kiana Smith sits down with Charity Marcus to explore this story. Finally, we offer a story on Black artists, musicians and promoters encountering discrimination at venues across Tulsa. This discrimination is referred to as "The Brown Code." This piece is the first in a series from our contributor Written Quincy.Focus: Black Oklahoma is produced in partnership with KOSU Radio, Tulsa Artist Fellowship, and Tri-City Collective. Blues 27Highlanders 24The Blues remain unbeaten in Super Rugby Aotearoa - but only just.Nearly everything Leon MacDonald's men touched in the first half turned to gold as the Blues powered to a 22-10 halftime lead after scoring three tries and controlling the game through precise tactical kicking. At that point, the Blues were so dominant it seemed they would canter to victory but they then went to sleep and were pushed to the brink. The second half turned into a dogfight. In the end, the Highlanders will feel desperately unfortunate not to steal an upset victory after an inspired second half performance.Highlanders first five-eighth Mitchell Hunt scored a solo second-half try to bring his team back into the game but he could not nail a 73rd minute penalty to tie the scores. On the back of two ruck penalties from referee Paul Williams, the Highlanders set up camp in the Blues 22 during the closing stages but they could not find the killer punch. The Blues defended one rolling maul that finished metres out from their line – this effort ultimately the difference between maintaining their seven game unbeaten run and suffering their first defeat in the New Zealand derby competition.Caleb Clarke can claim much of the praise for the Blues victory, having channelled an emotional evening at Eden Park.As the 27,000 strong Eden Park crowd paused pre-kickoff to honour slain Constable Matthew Hunt, who died in the line of duty in Auckland last week, Clarke was in tears. The highly-promising wing lost his grandfather earlier in the day and was clearly a swarm of emotions as he prepared to take on a spirited Highlanders side rejuvenated since lockdown.Clarke is a man of deep faith, and after scoring the opening try he pointed to the sky in tribute. After another memorable performance in which he laid on another try and showcased his talents in the air by snaffling a restart, Clarke should be comforted, somewhat, in the knowledge that his grandfather and family will be immensely proud of his efforts.Despite those efforts, the Highlanders never stopped coming. While their backline wasn't as slick, the visitors' their forward pack competed well all night – No 8 Marino Mikaele Tu'u snaffling turnovers and enjoying a quality battle with opposite Hoskins Sotutu.Blues playmakers Otere Black and Beauden Barrett orchestrated a tactical kicking masterclass, particularly in the first half, as they regularly nudged the ball in behind the inexperienced Highlanders wingers and into the corners to control much of the territory battle in wet conditions. With the Blues applying pressure through the boot, Highlanders fullback Scott Gregory had a night to forget as he shelled several kicks and gifted Dalton Papalii the first of his double after a Sotutu charge down.Blues captain Patrick Tuipulotu and Papalii, who scored two tries, often put their men on the front foot but MacDonald's men far from had it all their own way.Defensively the Blues will rue their sloppy start to the second half when they dropped off several tackles and lost two lineouts which allowed the Highlanders back into the match. The Highlanders did not need a second invitation to exploit big holes in the Blues defence. First Hunt sold a dummy and waltzed through. The Highlanders then had Ngane Punivai's try scrubbed out after a Hunt error at the breakdown was belatedly spotted. From the resulting penalty Rieko Ioane was sent to the bin and Shannon Frizell crashed over to give the Highlanders the lead. The Blues, however, again found the composure to hang on when it mattered most - just as they did in previous wins over the Hurricanes and Chiefs. While they head into the bye unbeaten, the Blues received another reminder of the level they must maintain.Blues 27 (Dalton Papalii 2, Caleb Clarke, Rieko Ioane tries, Otere Black 2 cons, pen)Highlanders 24 (Ash Dixon, Mitchell Hunt, Shannon Frizell tries; Hunt 3 cons, pen)HT: 22-10- text by Liam Napier

Highly regarded PGA, LPGA and European Tour Golf coach Matthew Tipper, shares his journey with me, starting in the small Welsh town of Porthcawl (UK) where he's originally from and leading to a World Wide career in professional golf. He started out representing Wales at National level cricket as a teenager, then began a career in law, before following his true passion and embarking on a teaching career in professional golf, firstly as assistant professional at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in South Wales, under head professional Peter Evans, before qualifying as a PGA professional at Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club under Robert Evans. Matthew put the really hard yards in, working for the highly prestigious David Leadbetter Golf academy and further learning his trade under the great golf master himself. His first professional job was in Dubai for 2 years, before helping to set up a brand new teaching academy in Portugal for a year. He then worked in China for 4 years, then spent 1 year in Hong Kong and 1 year in Korea, before heading to Poland and finally after 16 years, he is now back in the UK, where he uses Goodwood as a base. His Global Academy takes him all around the World, travelling and coaching students! Matthew shares his insights into what it takes to be a world class Golf coach and then explains the huge jump from amateur golf into tour professional golf, explaining what ingredients are required in terms of culture and work ethic and the massive commitment required to make it on tour. Matthew discusses what the benefits of gaining entry into the American College Golf system can afford his players, what his players get out of the system and the importance of building the player as well as the person. He provides insights into his work with tour players, focussing on the short game and highlights the need for players to also build fitness, strength, psychology and statistics with experts in their field, as part of the player's team. Matthew has coached numerous World class golfers and talks more about assisting the hugely talented Adrian Meronk achieve a semi final position at the 121st British Amateur around Royal Porthcawl in 2016, before narrowly losing to the winner Scott Gregory, who also went on to beat Robert MacIntyre. Adrian has now become Poland's first ever European Tour player! Crucially important to his mentoring, is developing the correct “culture” to develop the player, which is one of high performance, hard work and sticking to the plan. Matthew talks about making small improvements everyday and every week and building on it over time. Not over focussing on winning. Too many players have a “finite mindset” and it badly effects their judgement. Matthew talks openly about #mentalhealthissues on the tour and speaks about golfers feeling depressed. Matthew has developed a “book club” with his players which helps them grow mentally stronger and become happier people, which in turn leads to better golf!
