20 years ago, the late Christo and Jeanne-Claude transformed Central Park with The Gates, a temporary public art installation featuring 7,503 saffron-colored gates adorned with free-flowing fabric. After being elected as Mayor of New York City, Mike Bloomberg worked with the artists to bring their vision to life.The results? Over its 16 days on display, the public art piece drew more than four million visitors to Central Park in the middle of winter and brought an estimated $254 million in economic activity to the city.Christo and Jeanne-Claude were known for their site-specific, large-scale public artworks, which often reimagined landmarks or landscapes into surreal spaces with objects, fabrics, textures, and colors. From surrounding 11 islands in Miami's Biscayne Bay with bright pink fabric, to wrapping Paris's Pont Neuf bridge with silky, golden fabric, the pair created bold and brilliant outdoor projects that spanned the globe and garnered international acclaim for their expansiveness and originality. The point of their installations? It was simple; no deeper meaning was contained within the works, but they provided visitors with joy, beauty, and new perspectives on familiar spaces. Seit Anfang der 70iger Jahre photographiert Wolfgang Volz alle Projekte des großen Künstler-Paares Christo und Jeanne-Claude. Seien sie nun realisiert worden (wie etwa „The Running Fences“) oder nicht realisiert worden (wie etwa „Over The River“). Der Kunsthistoriker und Museumsdirektor Werner Spies nannte Wolfgang Volz „das Auge von Jeanne-Claude“. Andreas Wrede lernte Christo und Jeanne-Claude 1994 in New York City kennen, als Chefredakteur des Magazins MAX besprach er mit den beiden eine große Geschichte zur geplanten Verhüllung des Reichstages 1995 in Berlin. Seitdem kennen sich auch Wolfgang Volz und Andreas Wrede und haben viele Geschichten mit und über Christo und Jeanne-Claude gemacht. So ist dieser Podcast, die 15. und somit letzte Folge der ersten Staffel von The Culture Tapes nicht nur ein Gespräch über das Wirken von Wolfgang Volz, sondern eben mithin unweigerlich eine Reminiszenz an das unvergleichliche und unvergessliche künstlerische Werk von Christo und Jeanne-Claude. The primary inspirations were British culture and national symbols, particularly the British monarchy, as well as the clothing of India during the British Raj. The collection was presented through the narrative of a fairy tale about a feral girl who lived in a tree before falling in love with a prince and descending to become a princess. The collection's runway show was staged on 29 February 2008 at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris. The round stage was dressed in black with a black backdrop, with a large artificial tree in the centre wrapped in dark grey silk; it was inspired by the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who were known for wrapping buildings and landmarks in fabric. The presentation was divided into two phases to represent the girl's story; forty-two looks were presented in total, with twenty-three in the first half and nineteen in the second. In the first phase, the ensembles were all in black and white, with most looks having a slim, tailored silhouette. The clothing from the second half was richly coloured, with luxurious materials and embellishments, representing the girl's transformation into a princess. Critical response to The Girl Who Lived in the Tree was positive, and in retrospect it is regarded as one of McQueen's best collections. Academics have analysed its inspiration and styling through various lenses. The peacock headpiece by Philip Treacy and a dress with lace peacocks attracted particular critical attention and further analysis. Garments from the collection are held by various museums and have appeared in exhibitions such as the McQueen retrospective Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. Hütte hat über 30 Jahre als Leiter des Kunstbereichs der Deutschen Bank die globale Kunstförderung, die auf über 600 Standorte verteilte Kunstsammlung und sämtliche Ausstellungen des Geldinstituts verantwortet. Nach seinem Studium der Kunstgeschichte, Literatur-, Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft an der Ruhr-Universität in Bochum, kam Hütte 1986 zur deutschen Bank und steht heute mit 66 Jahren kurz vor seinem Ruhestand. Umso erfreulicher ist die Möglichkeit, sich von solch einem Urgestein des internationalen Kunstbetriebs erklären zu lassen, nach welchen Kriterien die Deutsche Bank Kunst ankauft und warum nie direkt über Kunstschaffende, sondern immer über Galerien und weshalb nicht primär zum Zwecke der Vermögenssteigerung wie man es von einem Geldinstitut erwarten würde. Außerdem haben wir über Hüttes Zusammenarbeit mit bedeutenden Kunstschaffenden wie Christo und Jeanne-Claude, Gerhard Richter und Jörg Immendorff gesprochen. The FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar is finally underway, while November marks the 100th anniversary of the British archaeologist Howard Carter breaking open the tomb of King Tutankhamen near the Egyptian city of Luxor. This year a Japanese research team concluded an iron dagger found in the tomb had, in fact, been forged from a meteorite. Meanwhile, west of Luxor and east of Qatar, the largest and only permanent artwork is being designed for the Abu Dhabi desert: The Mastaba, a project conceived in 1977 by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the duo known for their environmental installations. Projects, che espone disegni, collages, fotografie e video delle loro opere più famose, insieme ad opere di alcuni artisti del Nouveau Réalisme e della Land Art che hanno influenzato la loro produzione artistica e il loro pensiero.Curata da Francesco Poli, Paolo Repetto e Roberto Galimberti, con il coordinamento generale di Paola Eynard, la mostra, realizzata grazie alla collaborazione con la Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation di New York, presenta circa sessanta opere accompagnate da un'ampia sezione fotografica e dalla proiezione dei video che documentano la realizzazione delle monumentali installazioni artistiche. Le opere di Christo e Jeanne-Claude, tanto inedite, quanto ardite e monumentali, fecero sempre molta fatica ad essere approvate ed accettate. Nel 1966 il permesso per il progetto Wrapped Trees, concepito per il parco adiacente al Saint Louis Art Museum, in Missouri, fu negato. Nel 1969 gli artisti immaginarono il progetto Wrapped Trees, Project for Avenue des Champs- Élysées and the Rond Point des Champs-Élysée a Parigi, anch'esso mai realizzato. Il progetto Wrapped Trees per Riehen (Comune alle porte di Basilea) è stato infine completato nel 1998 ed è il risultato di 32 anni di sforzi e attese. Nel parco intorno alla Fondation Beyeler, 178 alberi, alti da 2 a 25 metri, sono stati avvolti con 23 chilometri di corda e con 55mila metri quadrati di tessuto in poliestere intrecciato.Al 1968 risalgono i primi due edifici impacchettati: entrambi musei. Si tratta della Kunsthalle di Berna e del Museum of Contemporary Art di Chicago. Nello stesso anno, in occasione della quarta edizione di Documenta, la quinquennale esposizione internazionale che si svolge a Kassel, in Germania, Christo e Jeanne-Claude realizzano davanti al palazzo del Friedericianum, sede della mostra, 5.600 Cubicmeter Package, una gigantesca scultura gonfiabile alta circa 85 metri. Nel 1974 a Roma il critico Achille Bonito Oliva organizza la grande rassegna “Contemporanea” a cui partecipano tutti i maggiori artisti internazionali. Christo e Jeanne-Claude realizzano una delle loro opere urbane più straordinarie: The Wall-Wrapped Roman Wall, che vede una sezione di ben 250 metri delle Mura Aureliane interamente coperta da tessuto di polipropilene legato da corde in Dacron. Nel 1985, undici anni dopo, The Pont Neuf Wrapped segna un nuovo intervento urbano che ha come protagonista il più antico ponte di Parigi, la cui architettura – in costante evoluzione - ha rispecchiato per secoli il carattere trasformista della città. L'intervento di Christo e Jeanne-Claude conferisce al Pont Neuf una nuova dimensione scultorea, continuandone dunque la tradizione della metamorfosi architettonica, trasformandolo per 14 giorni in un'opera d'arte.Wrapped Coast, One Million Square Feet (1969) nella Little Bay di Sydney in Australia, Valley Curtain (1972) a Rifle in Colorado, Ocean Front (1974) a Newport, Rhode Island a sud di Boston, Running Fence (1976) nelle Contee di Sonoma e Marin in California, sono tutte opere di dimensioni colossali, dove enormi teli in polipropilene o nylon hanno celato, per alcune settimane, vasti spazi, ora di costa, ora di acqua, ora di cielo. Valley Curtain, il grande telo arancione disteso come una immensa diga tra gli estremi di due colline, richiese 28 mesi di preparazione e durò solo 28 ore poiché forti raffiche di vento, fino a 100 km all'ora, resero necessaria una tempestiva disinstallazione. Running Fence, lunga quasi 40 chilometri e alta 5,5 metri, si estendeva da est a ovest, a nord di San Francisco, sulle proprietà di 59 allevatori di bestiame. Per 14 giorni l'alta “recinzione” di nylon bianco, come una inedita muraglia cinese, ma più elegante e leggera, seguiva l'andamento sinuoso delle colline per poi scomparire, immergendosi nell'oceano Pacifico, a Bodega Bay. L'idea arcaica della grande muraglia, come recinzione e difesa, delimitazione politica e confine, nella concezione dei due artisti si trasforma in un sinuoso nastro di luce che anziché separare, unisce, riaffermando ed esaltando così le caratteristiche coloristiche e luminose del contesto naturale catturato in una precisa frazione di tempo. Wrapped Fountain and Wrapped Medieval Tower (1968) sono le prime opere pubbliche realizzate da Christo e Jeanne-Claude in Italia. In occasione del Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto impacchettano una torre medievale e la Fontana del Mascherone del XVII secolo. Per i dieci anni dalla fondazione del movimento del Nouveau Réalisme, Christo e Jeanne-Claude impacchettarono con un tessuto in propilene bianco e con corde arancio due dei principali monumenti scultorei di Milano: quello di Vittorio Emanuele II in piazza del Duomo e quello di Leonardo da Vinci in piazza della Scala. Wrapped Monument to Leonardo e Wrapped Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II (1970) ebbero entrambi vita breve: rispettivamente due e sette giorni.Wrapped Reichstag (1995), l'impacchettamento dello storico palazzo del parlamento tedesco a Berlino, ha visto Christo e Jeanne-Claude impegnati in un travagliato processo di approvazione del loro progetto durato oltre due decenni. Per la forte pregnanza simbolica dell'edificio questo è forse l'intervento urbano più significativo degli artisti ed è tra quelli che ha avuto la maggiore risonanza e il più forte impatto a livello mondiale. La facciata, le torri e il tetto sono stati ricoperti con 100mila metri quadrati di tessuto in polipropilene color alluminio legati con ben 16,6 chilometri di corde blu. Il lavoro è stato compiuto da 70 alpinisti professionisti e da 120 operai installatori.A differenza degli esponenti della Land Art americana, che hanno privilegiato lontani territori desertici incontaminati e difficilmente raggiungibili, Christo e Jeanne-Claude hanno sempre voluto realizzare le loro opere in luoghi facilmente accessibili, anche nel caso degli interventi in spazi naturali. La componente fondamentale dei loro progetti era la presenza umana in forma di rapporto che una comunità di individui sviluppa con il contesto in cui vive e al contempo di interazione e coinvolgimento diretto nella creazione dei progetti stessi. Con Surrounded Islands (1983) nella Biscayne Bay di Miami, 11 delle isole situate nella baia furono circondate da oltre 600mila metri quadrati di tessuto fluttuante in polipropilene rosa che ricopriva la superficie dell'acqua e si estendeva per 61 metri da ciascuna isola nella baia. All'alba del 9 ottobre 1991, alla presenza di Christo e Jeanne-Claude, furono aperti i 3.100 ombrelli alti 6 metri e con un diametro di circa 8,5 metri, a Ibaraki e in California. The Umbrellas (1991) intendeva indagare le somiglianze e le differenze nei modi di vivere e nell'uso dello spazio in due valli interne, una lunga 19 chilometri in Giappone e l'altra 29 chilometri negli Stati Uniti. In Giappone, la valle si trova nella prefettura di Ibaraki e comprende le proprietà di 459 proprietari terrieri privati e di agenzie governative. En este verano que acaba de culminar, uno de los grandes acontecimientos fue la inauguración del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry ( MACA), en la zona de Manantiales, departamento de Maldonado. Todos quienes lo recorrimos salimos impresionados, por el diseño arquitectónico de Carlos Ott, tanto exterior como el interior, y por las primeras propuestas culturales, por ejemplo la retrospectiva de Christo y Jeanne Claude, que confirmaron el objetivo de colocar a Uruguay “en el mapa de las grandes exhibiciones internacionales”. El MACA es la culminación del proyecto que la Fundación Pablo Atchugarry viene desarrollando desde hace 15 años en su predio de la ruta 104 y que incluye otros dos pabellones de exposiciones, un auditorio al aire libre, la capilla con La Pietà, el taller donde trabaja el dueño de casa mientras está en Uruguay y el gran Parque de las Esculturas, que sigue creciendo, en extensión, en cantidad y calidad de las obras y en el despliegue de su jardinería. ¿Qué dejó la experiencia de estos dos primeros meses del MACA? ¿Cómo sigue la actividad allí, ahora que llegó el otoño? ¿Cuáles son los próximos planes? He is a tremendous veteran art teacher and host of Art Ed Radio from The Art of Education University. It was great to get to talk to him and hear his insights into this unique bit of art history. June 18 - July 3, 2016 Christo and his assistants used 100,000 square meters of bright yellow fabric to transform Lake Iseo in Italy. The fabric floated on top of floating dock system comprised of 220,000 polystyrene cubes. The fabric floated just above the surface moving with the water. There was no need for tickets or reservations. It was free for everyone to walk on as Christo said it was an extension of the street. The piers provided a walkway on the water connecting a small island to the mainland. Estimates are 72k-100k people visited per day, around 1.2 million people total over the 16 days. Christo and Jeanne-Claude had the idea for the floating piers in 1970. This was his first large-scale project since her death in 2009. If you are concerned about the environmental impacts of polystyrene on the water, after the exhibition, all of the material was gathered and recycled. Still not as eco friendly as Goldsworthy, but not as bad a Exxon. This week is the start to my annual Arts Madness tournament. In his spare time, he continued to doodle in his sketchbook, as well as, participated in cheese eating contests. In late 2012, Drew and his wife relocated to Minneapolis, where he refocused his efforts into writing and illustration. He currently draws in his home studio, while his dog, Leroy, snores next to him. Drew and his wife are blessed with two kids. Im Juni 1995 bescherten Christo und Jeanne-Claude mit ihrer Verhüllung des Deutschen Reichstages den Deutschen einen seltenen Moment heiterer Selbstreflexion. Indem sie das Parlamentsgebäude, das zuvor symbolisch für die Last der deutschen Geschichte stand, für zwei kurze sommerliche Wochen in unschuldiges Weiß verpackten, gelang es ihnen, das Ende der Bonner und den Beginn der Berliner Republik symbolisch einzuleiten. Im Podcast "Augen zu" erzählt die damalige Bundestagspräsidentin Rita Süssmuth, wie es in einem zähen, jahrzehntelangen Ringen gelang, eine Mehrheit im deutschen Bundestag für diesen einzigartigen Akt der Verhüllung eines staatlichen Symbols zu organisieren. Alle Verpackungen von Christo und Jeanne-Claude sind Festspiele der Vergänglichkeit, also mindestens so sehr Werke des Barock wie der Konzeptkunst. Dass sie im kollektiven Gedächtnis bleiben, verdanken wir Wolfgang Volz, dem deutschen Fotografen, der seit 1971 an Seite von Christo und Jeanne-Claude steht. Er berichtet als zweiter "Telefonjoker" in "Augen zu", wie es ihm gelang, als junger Fotografiestudent den gigantischen Vorhang in einem Tal in den Rocky Mountains zu fotografieren, bevor ihn der Wind zerfetzte. In Spätsommer 2021 vollendete sich das Œuvre von Christo und Jeanne-Claude mit der Verhüllung des Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Auch dies war, wie der "Wrapped Reichstag" ein jahrzehntelang vorbereitetes und viel diskutiertes Projekt. Als er 2021 durch weiß-leuchtende Stoffbahnen den Blicken der Gegenwart entzogen wurde, um die Fantasie zu enthüllen, da konnten dies seine Schöpfer selbst nicht mehr miterleben, da sie 2009 und 2020 gestorben waren. Die große Frage ist nun: Was bleibt von diesem Künstlerpaar, wenn nicht nur sie selbst, sondern auch ihre Werke von der Erde verschwunden sind? Genau diese Frage diskutieren Florian Illies und Giovanni di Lorenzo. Alle vier Wochen widmet sich "Augen zu" dem Lebenswerk einer großen Künstlerpersönlichkeit. Today in Paris marks the unveiling of the infamous CHRISTO AND JEANNE-CLAUDE'S posthumous dream project -- "L‘Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped”. Artlaws is thrilled to present a special event interview with celebrated artist and photographer Simon Chaput who knew Christo and Jeanne-Claude intimately, as both friend and colleague. After meeting the artist couple in New York in 1983, Simon quickly became an integral part of their life and their work. Christo and Jeanne-Claude were an unparalleled artistic duo celebrated for their magnificent, monumental, and ephemeral environmental installations often unprecedented in scale -- such as "Running Fence" down the California coast, "The Gates" in New York's Central Park, and "Wrapped Coast" in Australia. Also known for wrapping architecture and natural elements in fabric -- such as “Surrounded Islands” in Miami and the “Wrapped Reichstag” in Berlin -- their poetic public works transcended traditional boundaries of painting, sculpture, and architecture. What stands behind each work has always been a powerful call for freedom and beauty. "L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped" -- a project first conceived by the artists sixty years ago -- has today been fully realized. We spoke with Simon leading up to and en route to this unprecedented event.
