In this episode, we talk about how dangerous blue-green algae has become this summer for our dogs and what were once thought to be safe swimming areas! What's happened?Austin has come into the news recently after a spate of deaths from toxic blue algae blooms in Lady Bird Lake. It's Austin, and many dog owners take their pups along for boating, kayaking and swimming in our lakes but this summer it's turned truly deadly. We've already lost three dogs to this. It's just tragic.Where is it happening?City officials say that it started in Lady Bird Lake and initially it was around Red Bud Isle but now blooms have been found in other waterways here at Auditorium Shores and Barton Creek. They've closed Lady Bird Lake and advised pet owners not to take their dogs into the water until further notice because they don't know yet how to treat it or stop it without using chemicals. It could be weeks. They say it can also be harmful to people but don't know for sure yet. Here is a link to the original article, by Andrew Weber, from KUT Austin: https://www.kut.org/post/heres-what-y...We have to be hyper vigilant when near any slow moving body of water now; lakes, ponds, and even rivers can have these. The water reported has been rather murky but also crystal clear. Checkwith your city reports to see if there are maps showing reports of these algae blooms before venturing into the water with your dogs. Please share with us if you know of areas that have been logged as contaminated as well and we can put together a list to help other owners be aware.Tune into the Furbabies Podcast YouTube Channel at http://FurbabiesPodcast.tv.Got a question or suggestion for Stephanie and the show? On episode 27 we spoke with veteran guitarist and touring musician, Will Knaak. Will has an impressive resume to say the least; he has played extensively with a wide variety of acts for over 20 years and is currently recording and touring with the highly successful alternative rock band, Blue October. Will talks about how his trial by fire music career began in his early teens by playing gigs in local bars and learning the ropes from a variety of bands. In 2000, at age fifteen, he headlined an event at Austin's Auditorium Shores in front of 5,000 people, and Austin's mayor officially declared May 24th "Will Knaak day". This moment served as a catalyst that began a long-enduring passion to perform music professionally. We suggest checking Wikipedia for an in-depth list of bands and recordings Will has been involved with. As to be expected, we talk about guitars, music and touring on this podcast, and we get a basic chronological history of Will's career, one we intersected 15 years ago at Giddy Ups, a tight knit south Austin dive bar the Knaak Attack performed at many times. It was great to catch up with an old friend who has achieved much well-deserved success as a professional musician. We'd like to congratulate Will on the recent addition to his family, Nova Knaak, who also made an appearance on the podcast. Inspired by Nova and unable to tour in 2020, Will released a new live album on bandcamp this year in addition to recording Blue October's latest release. Other original music can be found on spotify and other streaming platforms. Intro Music: A Good Rogering Outro Music: Knaak Attack - Feel Like A Stranger Thanks for listening!
