In recent years, Nova Scotia lakes have faced a silent but persistent enemy, blue-green algae. Krysta Montreuil, with the Department of Environment and Climate Change, talks about what you can do to protect yourself and your pets.
Most people who go outdoors have heard of this. Most people don't know much about it. It can change the color of the water, making it easy to see, but many of these bacteria live on the side or bottom of a river or lake. You cannot treat water containing cyanobacteria to make it safe to drink. Listen and learn about another growing danger in the water.
Cyanobacteria, commonly called Blue Green Algae, can rapidly reproduce when conditions are right causing potentially hazardous Harmful Algal Blooms. Join Joe and Drew as they discuss why blooms occur, the risks of toxins from Harmful Algal Blooms on wildlife and livestock, and what you can do to reduce your likelihood of experiencing a cyanobacteria bloom. Send me a messageWhat do you get when a serial coffee entrepreneur moves to Sydney right before the beginning of the Covid pandemic and starts to wonder why the Iron Cove Bay in Sydney is such a dilapidated natural site yet paradoxically is often overrun with walkers, runners and cyclists? Of course Blue Green - an organisation dedicating itself to re-naturalising Sydney harbour to reprise some of its original beauty to help address chronic climate perils in the form of rising sea levels, mitigate the risks of extreme rain events and ever higher king tides, protecting state significant infrastructure, creating opportunities for meaningful community led discussions on managed retreat and the role of the public amenity in our already beautiful city, but also capitalising on emerging natural capital financial markets.Sounds obvious, yeah?Well, Colin Finn is that serial coffee entrepreneur who is gaining traction and support from a diverse set of stakeholders on what is a wickedly complex problem that is problematic now and sure to be a crisis in the future. We explore a lot in this conversation talking about his Blue Green venture, from the unwieldy governance structures of the city that hold in place some of that complexity and unmanageability, the role of using time as a potential frame for breakthroughs, the role of both rational value stack business cases but the critical importance of high quality, community participation and ownership of change, and the fundamental requirement for all of us to shift our perspective where humans are apart from nature to a part of nature. There is just so much in what Colin is building at Blue Green and what he hopes to achieve for all of us now and for generations to come is an important contribution in how we begin to finally engage in and adapt not just our civilisation and landscape to the growing threats a changing climate is presenting us, but also the mindsets and paradigms that need to be engaged now and evolved so that action, and effective action in that, is actually possible.Colin represents the value of a new lens that entrenched perspectives and interests struggle with and may miss - both as a non native Sydney sider as well as his diverse background as a creator and entrepreneur. He also represents the audacity required to engage with and present workable options to allow us to get into action with the challenges we face. How can Sydney and its harbour become more beautiful - that's the type of question a local wouldn't even contemplate suggesting! Settle in for what this unlikely outsider who now calls Sydney homes wants to offer us all, but needs all of our help to pull off. This conversation gives me a lot of hope, and I hope you enjoy it.Thanks for listening. Colours and moments have one thing in common, people perceive them in their unique way. This is Red Dino's tale of a moment filled with colours. What's yours? Transcription: Blue, green, white,...light. Framing it all, orange. Sometimes a split second is all you need. Walking, talking, you gaze upwards and, lo and behold, a moment. You capture a snippet of the present within the bounds of some quaint yesteryear magic. A passing cloud, fluttering leaves, warmth of the sun, today's sky...all enclosed within the context of the past. Can it be called a reverse time capsule? Where a transient slice of today is extracted and placed inside the protection of the steadfast, revered monument from days gone by. Does the orange blaze bright to share its spotlight with the spirit of the now? Does that make this specific feel of the blue, green, and white worthy of being remembered? A tiny portal. A window. A peek into the never-ending. All thanks to a glance. All thanks to being present in the presence of the past. What magical moment will another gaze bring? It's worth looking around just for that possibility. Adam Frank, SVP of Product and Marketing at Armory.io, speaks with SE Radio's Kanchan Shringi about continuous integration, continuous delivery, and continuous deployment – and how they differ. Frank suggests that organizations begin by identifying how the CI/CD process aligns best with their unique goals, noting that such goals might be different for B2C versus B2B SAAS (software as a service). They also discuss how the process can differ for monoliths compared to microservices-based products. Finally, they talk about continuous deployment as a service and some unique aspects of Armory's approach.
21 year-old Jennifer Wix, and her 2 year old daughter, Adrianna Wix, vanished without a trace in Cross Plains, Tennessee in March, 2004. Jennifer and Adrianna were living with Jennifer's boyfriend William Benton and his parents on their property at the time the pair vanished. According to Benton, he dropped Jennifer and Adrianna off at a gas station and watched them drive off with someone in a White car. He said he later saw Jennifer in the same White car without Adrianna, however, police have not been able to verify his story, and he along with his family have not cooperated with police, or allowed them to search their property. By most accounts, the relationship between Jennifer, her boyfriend, and his family was rocky, and rumors have swirled about what really happened to Jennifer and Adrianna. As of now, there have been no arrests in the case, and Jennifer and Adrianna's family has been fighting to keep the case front and center. Along the way, there has been friction within the family putting some of them at odds with each other. In this episode, Jennifer's sister Casey discusses the case, and her efforts to find out exactly what happened to her sister and niece, and to see justice done after nearly two decades. When she vanished, Jennifer was described as being White, 5ft4-5ft6, and weighing 125-135 pounds. She had Brown hair and Brown eyes. Adrianna was described as having Brown hair and Blue/Green eyes with a birthmark on the front of her upper right thigh. If you have information about the disapperance of Jennifer and Adrianna Wix, please call the Robertson County Sheriff's Office 615-384-7971. Episode 74 Jarrod Green20 year old Jarrod Green went missing from Searcy, Arkansas on September 30, 1994. His car was found in a local Walmart parking lot. According to multiple witnesses, he had become mixed up with drug dealers, and owed them money. He had left town for a short time before returning home. A week later, he vanished. In the days before he vanished, Jarrod retrieved his gun from a friend that had been holding onto it for collateral; telling his friend he needed the gun for protection. Lots of rumors circulated. The same names of people who may have been involved in Jarrod's disappearance came up repeatedly. Over time, some of the people associated with the main suspect in the case, Brandon Wheeler, wound up dead. Authorities charged Wheeler in 2017 with Jarrod's murder, but the case was dropped before trial. Apparently, authorities didn't feel that they had enough at the time to get a conviction. While the charges being dropped was disappointing to Jarrod's family, the fact they still didn't know where Jarrod was just as difficult. It's their belief, and the belief of police, that Jarrod is dead, and at this point, they'd just like to have his remains to say a proper goodbye. In this episode, Jarrod's sister Shannon discusses his case, and the frustrating turns it has taken over the years.Jarrod is a White male with Brown hair and Blue/Green eyes. He was 6ft tall and weighed 140-150 pounds. When he was last seen seen, he was wearing A pale green short-sleeved sweater over a light-colored shirt, baggy tan khaki pants, white socks and Birkenstock or Nike sandals. Jarrod has a scar on his left hand between his index and middle fingers, a tattoo on his abdomen, and a tattoo of the Tasmanian Devil cartoon character with the initials "SH" on his right shoulder blade. He has a bump on his nose from a prior fracture. If you have information about Jarrod's case, please contact the Searcy Police Department 501-268-3531If you'd like to support this podcast via a donation, you can do so through Patreon here-https://www.patreon.com/MissingPodcastTo contact the podcast or learn more about the cases we discuss visit:Missingpersonspodcast.comFollow us on Social media-Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Missing-Persons-Podcast-103501877912153orTwitter:https://twitter.com/Missing_PodThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4230693/advertisement

Following the terrible manatee die off in 2021, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decided to take the drastic measure of supplementing the mammals' diet with human provided lettuce. How is the program working?Speaking of manatee, the reason they're dying is because blue green algae blooms are preventing the seagrass they feed on from receiving sunlight, which is essential for growth. The seagrass beds die off, the manatees lose their food source, and the manatees then starve to death. What's causing those blue green algae blooms, largely, is phosphorus runoff from agriculture in the form of fertilizer and manure. Our guest on this episode, Dan Egan, has a new book out for spring of 2023 entitled "The Devil's Element: Phosphorus and a World out of Balance." Not only is Florida ground zero for the negative effects of phosphorus, it is also the nation's leading supplier of the mineral."Welcome to Florida" is sponsored by Windstorm Products. In this episode, we talk about how dangerous blue-green algae has become this summer for our dogs and what were once thought to be safe swimming areas! What's happened?Austin has come into the news recently after a spate of deaths from toxic blue algae blooms in Lady Bird Lake. It's Austin, and many dog owners take their pups along for boating, kayaking and swimming in our lakes but this summer it's turned truly deadly. We've already lost three dogs to this. It's just tragic.Where is it happening?City officials say that it started in Lady Bird Lake and initially it was around Red Bud Isle but now blooms have been found in other waterways here at Auditorium Shores and Barton Creek. They've closed Lady Bird Lake and advised pet owners not to take their dogs into the water until further notice because they don't know yet how to treat it or stop it without using chemicals. It could be weeks. They say it can also be harmful to people but don't know for sure yet. Here is a link to the original article, by Andrew Weber, from KUT Austin: https://www.kut.org/post/heres-what-y...We have to be hyper vigilant when near any slow moving body of water now; lakes, ponds, and even rivers can have these. The water reported has been rather murky but also crystal clear. Checkwith your city reports to see if there are maps showing reports of these algae blooms before venturing into the water with your dogs. Please share with us if you know of areas that have been logged as contaminated as well and we can put together a list to help other owners be aware.Tune into the Furbabies Podcast YouTube Channel at http://FurbabiesPodcast.tv.Got a question or suggestion for Stephanie and the show? Choose how you want to pace this: 5/10 on the effort scale (like constantly climbing stairs)2K+18 if you have a 2K average time (your 2K time divided by 4)UT2 heart rate zoneBlue/Green zone on a MyZone tile. The hardest part of this row should be keeping the pace down. It's really easy to let your ego take over and go too fast on this one! I talk about the importance of change in this row. But I'll have to admit, I think it was a bit of a brain wandering subject – hopefully it'll keep you distracted for 30 minutes though! 00:00 Introduction01:53 Warmup06:56 Main Session37:26 Cooldown and stretching. And what other parallels existed between France and the United States in their environmental regulatory journeys? In this episode, ELI Visiting Attorney Aïcha Ghmouch discusses her work examining these two frameworks. ★ Support this podcast ★
