In England in 1968, there was a lingering effect from the previous year's Summer of Love. Bands that finally got the opportunity to record their own songs, were still trying to catch up with Sgt. Yet, out of all the distortion and chaos set to take over the multiple stages, one band is uniquely poised to completely steal the show: The Neptune Power Federation.Fresh off massive European touring, the Sydney-based rock outfit is making their highly anticipated return to Australian soil. "We were summoned by Her Majesty the Imperial Priestess to basically support her in all her endeavours. Those endeavors being traveling through time to destroy the patriarchy. So we've basically been doing her bidding now for about 10 years in our time, but it spans the millennia in other people's time. We also have all these rules. So, none of the men in the band are allowed to speak. She's deemed that it's okay for me to talk today, so I can talk candidly, but for the most part, we're there just to do her bidding. And apparently, her bidding is to play 1970s psychedelic rock."We mention that it must be an exercise in futility expecting Jaytanic Ritual to say nothing from the stage, to which his tone became more sombre."The consequences of speaking are so dire that it's better off just doing what she wants," he replied, fear in his eyes. "The other thing we're not allowed to do is smile, because what we're doing is very serious. I'm so excited to kick off Season 6 of Roadcase with Grammy winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and founding member of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, the one and only Jorma Kaukonen!!  Jorma was a true pioneer of the counter-culture era of psychedelic rock in the late 60s San Francisco music scene, and having him on the show is particularly relevant as we sadly just lost another music icon, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. I spoke to Jorma in November, thus prior to recent events, and he talked to me about his time in the early days in Palo Alto and Haight Asbury in San Francisco, the founding of Jefferson Airplane and his deep love of blues guitar. Jorma also spoke to me about his reflections on touring, and the historic shows of that period in music, having been one of the few artists to play all three landmark festivals, Monterey Pop, Woodstock and Altamont.Jorma is intellectually curious — a lifelong learner — with a diverse cultural background of both Jewish and Finnish heritage, and having grown up in Pakistan, didn't really learn of the burgeoning modern rock music wave, as it were, until his arrival in the States in 1955. In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles and Doug welcome back Andy, a school teacher and avid live music fan, to share his an After Show Report on the 2025 Bonnaroo Music Festival. Despite carefully planning his trip with his friend Teddy and driving nine hours to the festival, Andy faced a series of unexpected challenges and adventures. The trip kicks off with a tense interaction with law enforcement when they are pulled over by a Kentucky State Trooper, escalating as a K-9 unit arrives. Fortunately, they are allowed to proceed to Bonnaroo without any legal troubles.Upon arrival, Andy and Teddy set up their elaborate campsite, which included modern amenities like a solar generator and 42-inch TV. The first night involved acclimatizing to the youthful crowd and loud electronic dance music that played until the early hours. Things took a dramatic turn when Teddy experienced a sudden medical emergency and had to leave, promising to return later to pick Andy up. Later, a severe storm brought torrential rains and flooding, leading to the cancellation of the entire festival due to infrastructural failure.
