When billionaire Barry Sherman and his wife Honey were found dead in their mansion, bodies staged in a bizarre manner, police initially believed the deaths were the result of a murder/suicide. After pushback from the Sherman family Toronto police came to the conclusion that the couple had been brutally murdered. The investigation into their deaths has been extensive but the murders remain unsolved. Despite numerous leads and a $35 million reward offered by their family for information leading to an arrest, no suspects have been charged. Over the years various theories have emerged regarding the motive and potential suspects, ranging from business-related conflicts to family disputes. The couple's wealth and Barry's aggressive business practices may have created enemies, leading to speculation about possible motives for the murders. Sources: Donovan, K. (n.d.). You don’t expect to find two billionaires posed like mannequins by their own pool. But on December 15, 2017, realtor Elise Stern did just that when she entered Barry and Honey Sherman’s Toronto mansion. Honey was traveling, and Barry was at work, so Elise knew the couple wouldn’t be home. As she showed potential buyers through the house, Elise pointed out quirky features, including life-size statues. When they reached the basement pool, she was shocked to see two figures hanging by their necks from the pool railing. Realizing these were not statues, Elise called for help. The bodies of Barry and Honey Sherman—two of Canada’s wealthiest—had been discovered. Their deaths triggered an investigation that remains unsolved nearly eight years later, with a $35 million reward offered for information. Listen to The Billionaire Murders podcast here. #281 - In December 2017, first responders arrived at a sprawling mansion in one of Toronto's wealthiest neighborhoods. What they found inside would shock the nation. Barry Sherman, a billionaire pharmaceutical tycoon, and his wife, Honey, were found dead at the edge of their indoor pool. No signs of forced entry. No note. Just two lifeless bodies and a scene that felt… staged. At first, the authorities suspected a murder-suicide. But the Shermans' family pushed back on these rumors, claiming the couple had powerful enemies, and the truth was far darker than anyone wanted to believe. Who wanted Barry and Honey Sherman dead? Was it a personal vendetta? A bad business deal or rival? Or something else far more sinister? The Shermans' funeral is weird, the list of eulogists long, and it's attended by Canadian boldface names. But ask anyone who knew Barry Sherman and they all say the same thing:he was the smartest person they'd ever met. Always finishing at the top of his class, Barry was smart enough to claw his way to the top of the infamously cutthroat generic drug industry and make billions of dollars. But he was also arrogant and unreasonable, driven and deceptive. Just the sort of man who dies under suspicious circumstances. Meanwhile, Sherman's cousins claimed they'd been swindled out of their share of the company. Kerry Winters claimed Barry once asked him to murder Honey, then drew suspicion when he told the press he wanted to kill his uncle himself. From Lionsgate Sound and CBC Podcasts comes “The No Good, Terribly Kind, Wonderful Lives and Tragic Deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman.” Five years after the unsolved crime, host Kathleen Goldhar explores the business rivals, disgruntled relatives and far-out conspiracy theories around the brutal society murders. Five years later, with no arrests and little news from the police, their deaths remain shrouded in mystery and conspiracy theories, with too many lingering questions. Not just who killed them, but what kind of life do you have to live that when you're found dead, there are multiple theories, including some involving your own family? That's the question journalist Kathleen Goldhar set out to discover, in The No Good, Terribly Kind, Wonderful Lives and Tragic Deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman, as she explores who the Shermans really were and why too much money might have been what killed them in the end. Episode 1: The Man on the Inside Where are Honey and Barry Sherman? It's a typical day for these eccentric billionaires but they're not answering the phone. After a gruesome discovery, the Sherman children decide to tear down the mansion where they grew up. Before wreckers arrive, a mysterious intruder discovers signs of an investigation gone wrong. This series probes the strange case of the famous Toronto couple who were found strangled in their north Toronto home in 2017. For five years, Kevin Donovan has covered the case for the Star, fought court battles to access documents on the police investigation and the Shermans and their estate, and wrote a book about it.
Retired FBI agent Jodi Weber helps Kate discuss the murder of Canadian billionaires Honey and Barry Sherman. The couple, well known philanthropists who mixed in Toronto's elite circles, ran one of the country's largest pharma corporations. On December 15, 2017, a realtor touring a billionaire's mansion made the gruesome discovery of their bodies. Was this murder committed by a rival, or possibly by someone who knew them intimately? Toronto police say a private investigation into the slayings two years ago of billionaire couple Barry and Honey Sherman has ended, but their own probe continues — and they want people who sent tips to the private tipline to repeat them now directly to police. To that end, police have set up a telephone tipline and email address, Insp. Hank Idsinga told a media briefing Monday. The Sherman family had hired a team of private investigators to conduct an independent probe. It included several former Toronto homicide detectives. While Idsinga said the private team received 343 tips — information that was shared with police — it has now wrapped its work on the case, he said, citing the Sherman family. Idsinga asked that anyone who submitted those private tips now resubmit them to Toronto police to avoid any loss of information. - CBC Investigators said Barry and Honey were found dead in the lower-level pool area, reportedly hanging by belts from a railing on the pool deck and wearing their clothing. A post-mortem examination determined the Shermans died of “ligature neck compression.” It was also determined that the couple likely died two days before they were found on Dec. 13, 2017. - GlobalNewsCa Police have also set up a direct email address for the case. Tips can be provided at shermantips@torontopolice.on.ca or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/barry-honey-sherman-two-years-family-statement-1.5397428 Learn more about your ad choices.
