Mary Vincent was only 15 years old when she endured a brutal attack that changed her life forever. In September 1978, while hitchhiking in California, Mary was picked up by Lawrence Singleton, a 50-year-old man with a history of violence. After assaulting her, Singleton severed both of Mary's forearms and left her for dead in a ravine. Mary would manage to climb out of the ravine and seek help, ultimately surviving the ordeal. We talk about Fargeat's unique style, which combines realism with hyper-stylized elements, her body horror trends, and her feminist themes. We also talk about the controversy around rape revenge as a narrative structure. It's a movie we both really enjoy.

Mary Vincent's parents were going through a divorce and at the age of 15 she left home. Tired of living in cars, she decided to hitchhike her way to stay with her grandfather in Corona, CA. Unfortunately Mary never made it to Corona, Mary was picked up by 51 year old Larry Singleton. Larry seemed like a nice old man, and she had many miles left on her journey so she accepted a ride from him. After waking up from a nap, Mary noticed they were traveling the wrong way. Mary brought it to Larry's attention who apologized and said he got lost. They stopped at a rest area for a break and while Mary was tying her shoe, Larry hit Mary with a sledgehammer. After being sexually assaulted multiple times, Larry chopped Mary's arms off and tossed her down a 30 foot ravine leaving her for dead. 15 year old Mary Vincent fought against all the odds, and somehow climbed her way back to civilization. On this True Crime Tuesday episode, we're discussing the Mary Vincent case and the notorious Lawrence Singleton. Mary had her arms chopped off by the deranged Singleton, and through an amazing will to live, survived the near-death attack. After a soft on crime California conviction, Singleton was let out on parole when he relocated to unincorporated Hillsborough County in near Tampa. Through an odd twist of fate, Singleton was interrupted as he was in the process of stabbing a sex worker by the name of Roxanne Hayes. The murder investigation led to a conviction where Singleton died in prison. https://www.Ghostbed.com/wolfpack | Code: Wolfpack https://www.factor75.com for Factor Meals | Promo Code: Wolfpack50 - 50% off Visit our Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/failuretostop Learn more about your ad choices. In September 1978, 15 year old Mary Vincent was hitchhiking through California when she was picked up by a seemingly harmless middle-aged man. What started as a straightforward journey would end up becoming one of the most shocking, brutal true crime cases of all time, with a truly astonishing conclusion… SA Help Resources: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/sexual-health/help-after-rape-and-sexual-assault/ Mental health resources UK: https://www.mind.org.uk/ Mental health resources Global: https://checkpointorg.com/global/ Become a Patreon subscriber! http://www.patreon.com/ThingsAreAboutToGetWeird Our Merch Store! https://thingsareabouttogetweird.teemill.com/ Hannah Alonzo's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/hannahalonzo Learn more about your ad choices. When 15-year-old Mary Vincent stuck her thumb out along the side of a road in Berkley, California, her hope was to hitch a ride away from her strict parents towards a new beginning. Mary was positively thrilled when a grandfatherly looking man in a truck pulled up beside her and offered to drive her exactly where she wanted to go. But when the driver veered off route and instead drove Mary, who was suddenly now his captive, to a completely isolated desert in the pitch black of night, she knew in her gut that her life was in danger. And when her captor removed a hatchet from his toolkit, this young girl's life was forever, and irrevocably, altered in the most horrific of ways. Because the man who so kindly offered Mary Vincent a free ride just hours earlier was none other than Larry Singleton, more famously known as the "Mad Chopper." And the heinous acts of sexual violence and mutilation inflicted on this innocent teenage girl is truly what nightmares are made of. But incredibly, this story does not exactly end the way you might have expected it to. Do not miss this case....it is as miraculous as it is terrifying. In September of 1978, 15 year old Mary Vincent was hitchhiking the California roads to return to her home in Las Vegas. Mary had run away from her mother and father and lived on the streets for a period of time, often sleeping in unlocked cars. Eventually she went to her grandfather's house, but became home sick and decided to return to Las Vegas. While hitchhiking back home though, she was picked up by a man who attacked and left her for dead. Miraculously, Mary survived the brutal attack and would go on to become an artist and an advocate for victims rights. ***TRIGGER WARNING*** Rape - Dismemberment - Suicide - Assault with a weapon - Murder Hang with us: Follow Us on Instagram Like Us on Facebook Join our Case Discussion Group on Facebook Get Killer Queens Merch Bonus Episodes Support Our AMAZING Sponsors: Mad Rabbit: If you go to MadRabbit.com/queens and use promo code QUEENS you'll receive 25% off.
