On this show we have the pleasure of chatting with the past president, current president, and president-elect of the association to get their unique perspectives on what's happening on the west coast of Canada. We get a better understanding of the leadership structure and initiatives that are happening with the Music Therapy Association of British Columbia. Here is a little more about Susan, Laura, and Sheila: Susan Summers PhD, MTA: Susan Summers is a Certified Music Therapist and Vocal Psychotherapist who has been a passionate advocate in her clinical work with older adults and those at end-of-life and in leadership roles for over three decades. She has been an instructor in the music therapy department at Capilano University for nearly 25 years. Susan currently serves on three professional boards: Canadian Association of Music Therapists, Federation for Counselling Therapists in BC, and the Music Therapy Association of BC, and is currently serving again as President of MTABC. Susan's passion and vision for music therapy inspires students, colleagues, and other health professionals to partner with us to ensure that music therapy is known and is available to everyone as an essential health profession. Laura Hastings, MTA, MA, BMT, BA in Mus, NICU-MT: Laura graduated from Capilano University in 2013 after completing her internship at BC Children's Hospital. After practicing for 4 years in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland in private practice, long-term care, and in the non-profit sector, she went on to complete a Master's in music therapy at Concordia University in Montreal. There, she joined forces with Capilano graduate Alison Usher-Jones in her private practice working with individuals with autism. The thrilling festivals and world-class food of Montreal were spectacular but, after 4 years, she returned to the West Coast to work in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and in long-term care. Laura is excited to be in the new Board position of President Elect and to support BC music therapists. Sheila Lee, MA, MTA, FAMI, NICU-MT, RCC : Sheila has been involved in music and the arts all her life. As a Registered Clinical Counsellor and Certified music therapist, she regularly uses music, dance, visual arts, and play therapy techniques in her work. She has a BA from UBC, Bachelor of Music Therapy from Capilano U, and an MA in Counselling from UVic. As a lifelong learner, she has completed certifications in Neurologic Music Therapy, NeonataI Intensive Care Unit-Music Therapy, all three levels of The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music, Trauma-Informed Expressive Arts Therapy, and Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma & Resilience. Her private practice, She Lee Music, has led her to provide music therapy for several school districts and non-profit organizations, and teach early childhood music classes in several daycares and childcare centres. She is also a BC Children's and BC Women's Hospital employee. Most recently, she began working on a unit supporting mothers who use substances and their infants who have been exposed to substances. Her specialties include supporting babies, children, teens, mothers, and families. Sheila's other passions include her martial arts training, and spending time with her husband and children. She is thrilled to be invited to Beyond the Studio and hopes everyone who is listening is doing well. “For more information about resources from today's show, please visit: beyondthestudio.ca

This episode of the It's A Mimic! podcast is going to return to one of the creatures that the panel of Dungeon Masters did a deep dive on in episode 128: The Dragon Turtle. It's another return to the pages of Fizban's Treasury of Dragons to see what the probably-stoned wizard has to say about these gargantuan dragons that live in the oceans, and all the havoc they might wreak in your campaigns. Oh this one's something!! Meyer Chambers is a campus minister and the liturgical music minister at Boston College, where our host Olivia is a member of his liturgical choir. The Liturgy Arts Group, made up of student singers and instrumentalists, is a tightknit and faith-filled community that provides music for all of BC's liturgies. Meyer is one of those Catholic guys–– he knows seemingly everyone in the Archdiocese, has worked and volunteered and given his heart to so many organizations, and he radiates the light of Christ through his open office door, big smile, and iconic Meyer laugh. He's one of my favorite human beings, and I hope you can see why. Of course goats come up, but so does ministering to college kids, the importance of music ministry, and one heck of a life story. We love you, Meyer. Links: -grexly.com -patreon.com/grexly

My guest today is Benji Rogers, the Founder of Pledgemusic and Co-Founder of the Dot Blockchain Music Project. Digital music is a mutation. Like a virus, it adapts, looking for new ways to be consumed, defying efforts to be fixed in some predictable context. Zeros and ones phantasmagorically appear and recede across networks, bought, sold, streamed and shared. Artists have little control over where their creations travel, how they’re used, how they are mutated by others. Rights, ownership information, sales data and payment are managed by multiple entities in the music business who often have competing agendas. Releasing music into the digital world can be a bit like putting a message in a bottle and throwing it into a vast, wild sea. So how can this all be made more transparent? How can permanance and mutability co-exist? Enter the Blockchain. The .BC Music Project is the first attempt to use Blockchain technology to create a global, decentralized database of music rights wherein a song cannot be separated from its usage rights and still be played. There’s the transparency and permanence. If you haven’t heard of Blockchain, it is basically a distributed database that maintains a continuously growing list of ordered records called blocks. So you write a song, and create a block with data about the authors, who played on it, who the publisher and record company is. Once data is entered, it cannot be altered retroactively - BUT as rights or usage rules evolve over time, the information can appended, and there’s a record of who changed it, and a validation process to make sure the changes are true. So along with permanence and truth, you get mutability. There is huge enthusiasm around .BC Music, and the project recently announced partnerships with its first industry partners: Canadian Music Rights organization SOCAN, CD Baby, MediaNet, Songtrust, and FUGA. But Benji and his partners at the Dot BC Music project are not the first people to try to fix the morass of problems in digital music. There have been many other industry initiatives going back nearly 20 years that have tried and failed to solve these issues - so in our chat, I pressed Rogers to outline exactly why Blockchain technology and his initiative are different and why they might finally be the beginning of a very bright future indeed for the music business. Benji and I sat down at Ludlow House on the Lower East Side for this chat. So pull up a chair with us and listen! Matt and I spoke before The Classic Crime played in Portland, Oregon in celebration of their debut album Albatross, in which they played it in its entirety with original guitarist Justin DuQue. We talk about: - Albatross 10-year tour - What albums meant the most to Matt when he was in high school - Memories while writing and recording Albatross with producer Michael Baskette - What song off Albatross the band hates - (a third) Successful Kickstarter campaign - What future material will look like lyrically Facebook: Facebook.com/TheClassicCrime Support The Classic Crime KICKSTARTER campaign: http://j.mp/tcckickstarter SUBSCRIBE/RATE Matt's podcast "Don't Feed The Trolls": TrollsPodcast.com Support this podcast by leaving a FIVE STAR rating and review on iTunes.
