Send us a textThe deep healing that can occur through the Expressive Arts is only beginning to be acknowledged. In this episode I speak with solo show coach Jessica Lynn Johnston. She was my acting coach and director in my last solo show, Hidden. (See heatherherington.com for review).Writing my novel Flawed was lifesaving when I felt burn out from treating sexual abuse survivors as well as treating PTSD, addiction, autoimmune and so on for so many years. It allowed me to expresss emotion through my thoughts and ideas, helping me discard stress through creativity. And I kept writing whether it was the librettos fro Avi and my musicals or radio plays, essays and finally the books, Surviving a Viral Pandemic through the lens of a naturopathic medical doctor and Transforming Trauma, a drugless and creative path to healing PTS and ACE. But for me performing solo shows has been the pinnacle. With Avi writing my tunes and singing them on stage while acting out my own sexual assault and embodying characters that supported my emotional recovery generated a healing so profound that I was actually shocked. And now years later I am creating a show about my late husband Avi Noam Gross who died from hospital error. And so with my acute grieving having subsided I am excited to bring my workshop back. Originally a retreat and called Moving the Pelvis to Healing, I am now naming it, Transforming Trauma through the Expressive Arts. And this is why Jessica was a good person to interview as she has helped thousands of people, teaching them, coaching them, aiding them in transcending major bumps in their lives. How can art shape historical memory and national identity? And how can cultural heritage and historical references be used to enact a vision of a nation? In Staging Tianxia: Dunhuang Expressive Arts and China's New Cosmopolitan Heritage (Indiana University Press, 2024), Lanlan Kuang explores these questions through the lens of Dunhuang expressive arts — a twentieth-century music and dance performance style inspired by the images, music descriptions, and narratives found in the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. Through these performances, Dunhuang expressive arts presents a vision of China as a historically multiethnic and cosmopolitan nation. Staging Tianxia is an ambitious and interdisciplinary book, weaving together ethnography, ethnomusicology, performance studies, history, and philosophy. It is also rich with episodes from Kuang's own fieldwork in Dunhuang and rehearsal studios, and through such moments Kuang offers intriguing insights on the way that heritage is constructed and embodied. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of ethnomusicology, performance studies, Chinese classical dance, and Dunhuang studies. To introduce this novel format, past peer-reviewed research will be discussed from the empirical-based inquiry. For the majority of our time together, however, participants will be invited to work collaboratively and in embodied ways to create their own PPSAs using a number of expressive arts tools, including creative writing, digital apps, and mask-making. In particular, participants will discover the theory, processes, and outcome of this restorative way of doing participatory research within narrative inquiry. Synthesizing personal explorations to enhance emotional or clinical development — then creatively reconstructing that information and affect into PPSAs with the intent to re-story and restore self-identity while being witnessed — can be very effective in treatment, as well.PLEASE NOTE: Participants' knowledge of qualitative research tenets and methods will be beneficial. The ability to access your narratives without concern about retraumatization will be key to maintaining safety in this session. We are recording Season 3 of the Resilient Birth podcast. Meanwhile we have selected our favorite episodes for you. In this episode, Justine and Sarah interview Lacey Castilleja Fisher, a licensed professional counselor and registered play therapist. Lacey specializes in working with parents and parents-to-be who have experienced sexual trauma, as well as individuals dealing with a range of mental health issues. Lacey shares two quotes that resonate with her work: one by Natasha Trethewey about the importance of telling a story to heal from trauma, and another by Resmaa Menakem about the discomfort of healing. The conversation explores the power of storytelling, the use of sandtray therapy and expressive arts in therapy, and the personal experiences that led Lacey to her work. In this conversation, Lacey discusses how she creates safety in the sandtray experience. She emphasizes the importance of selecting diverse materials and figures, and speaking to the activating potential of the miniatures. Lacey also explains how she incorporates EMDR into sandtray therapy and adapts the practice for the perinatal population. She shares insights on finding and collecting miniatures, as well as the importance of open curiosity and not assuming the meaning behind a client's tray. The conversation highlights the power of storytelling and the versatility of expressive art therapy. Keywords: therapy, trauma, storytelling, sandtray therapy, expressive arts, perinatal trauma, birth trauma, EMDR, perinatal mental health, storytelling, expressive art therapy Takeaways Telling a story is an important part of healing from trauma. It allows individuals to process and integrate their experiences. But telling a story does not have to be verbal. Sandtray therapy and expressive arts can be powerful tools in therapy, providing a nonverbal and creative way for clients to explore and express their emotions and experiences. The journey of parenthood can bring up feelings of uncertainty and self-doubt, especially for individuals with their own trauma history. EMDR can be incorporated into sandtray therapy. Adapting sandtray therapy for the perinatal population involves gaining expertise in perinatal mental health and being thoughtful about the miniatures that represent the different feelings and experiences during the perinatal period. Open curiosity and not assuming the meaning behind a client's tray are important aspects of facilitating the therapy. Storytelling in sand tray therapy goes beyond verbal expression and includes the selection and creation of scenes in the tray. Sound Bites "No words are off limits. No stories are off limits." "The expressive arts and sandtray therapy allow different parts that are closed off to open up." Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Guest Introduction 01:24 The Power of Storytelling and Quotes 06:21Using Sandtray Therapy and Expressive Arts 10:00 Introduction to Sandtray Therapy 12:09 Working with Non-Verbal Parts and Sensations 17:01 The Process of Building and Creating in Therapy 21:47 Personal Experience and Trauma-Informed Work 27:28 Creating Safety in the Sandtray Experience 30:05 Incorporating EMDR into Sandtray Therapy 33:28 Adapting Sandtray Therapy for the Perinatal Population 36:28 Finding and Collecting Miniatures 39:36 Facilitating Open Curiosity 42:46 The Power of Storytelling in Sandtray Therapy On the Resilient Birth podcast, Justine and Sarah explore the impact of trauma across the perinatal period, from trying-to-conceive to pregnancy, from childbirth to postpartum and parenting. Through an inspirational quote that drives our weekly conversations about trauma and healing, Justine and Sarah explore topics such as birth trauma, parenting as a survivor, and finding healing with vulnerability and compassion that support birthing people and birth professionals. Each week, listeners leave with takeaways to utilize in their lives and/or clients. Justine and Sarah hold the stories they share with honor and respect with the hope to impart knowledge, increase understanding, and bear witness to this challenging topic. Sarah is a licensed mental health counselor, educator, and mom of three. She walks with a story of trauma from before and as a result of her perinatal experience. Justine supports survivors of trauma through perinatal coaching and childbirth education. As well as being a mother of three, she holds a Ph.D. on representations of consent and sexual violence. Learn more about Sarah and Justine's course called Trauma Informed Fundamentals here: https://resilient-birth.mykajabi.com/traumainformedfundamentals Lacey Castilleja Fisher, LPC-S, RPT-S, PMH-C, is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor and a Certified Mental Health Professional with a mental health private practice in southwest Austin. Lacey has worked in a variety of settings including in a Children's Advocacy Center to provide counseling to children that experienced sexual abuse and their families, and she decided to take the experience she had there and apply it to private practice. She built her practice around supporting children and adults that had experienced sexual abuse/assault and found a passion working with parents and parents to be when their sexual trauma was activated in the perinatal period. This led to Lacey learning as much as she could about perinatal trauma, pregnancy and infant loss, NICU trauma and fertility struggles. Lacey finds that the parents she works with respond well to EMDR, IFS and sandtray therapy at her counseling practice. Lacey has served as the Clinical Director for the Pregnancy and Postpartum Health Alliance of Texas and now serves on their advisory board. Discover how Bed's educational journey at Lesley University and the rich history of the expressive arts therapy program shape their approach to therapy. Bed guides us through the innovative practices of intermodal, polyaesthetic embodiment, highlighting how these methods foster self-exploration and healing in ways that transcend traditional art forms.Ever wondered how thoughts manifest in the brain, or how attention and energy movement can improve emotional well-being? We'll demystify these concepts, using therapeutic practices like Internal Family Systems (IFS) to illustrate the dynamic interplay of mind and body. By shifting the focus to societal challenges and the role of interdependence, we explore how life's conditions influence mental health and why the goal is not to "fix" clients but to nurture an environment of healing and compassion. Finally, we tackle the practical and ethical dilemmas faced by therapists, from the financial constraints of private practice to the systemic obstacles in community health. Through the lens of expressive arts therapy, we envision a future where creative, qualitative therapies gain the recognition they deserve alongside evidence-based methods. Welcome to our first episode of 2024! Today I'm speaking with Canadian metalsmith, Robin McGauley. Robin shares her journey from leaving a career she loved as an ordained minister in order to follow a deeper longing to create beauty with her hands as well as her heart. We talk about abandoning fear, healing ourselves with the medicine of our work, the link between voice and vocation, deepening the connection to our inner wisdom, and toilets! Robin McGauley was an ordained minister in The United Church of Canada where she served as Program Director at a retreat centre and then as a policy writer for the organization. This was meaningful work, so giving it up to follow the longing of her heart and a deeper calling to be an artist was a painful yet beautiful process. Since 2019 Robin has been a full-time metalsmith, creating jewellery and small sculptures, as well as seeing clients who come to her for spiritual direction. She has also taught courses in the Expressive Arts program at the Haliburton School of Art & Design. Robin lives with her incredibly supportive husband in Kitchener, Ontario, which is the territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishnaabe and Neutral peoples. You can follow along with Robin and see her beautiful offerings at the links below. Today's episode features another personal account of struggle through postpartum issues and a journey to healing. Join us to learn more from Ruthie's story! I'm joined by Ruthie Ayzenberg, LMFT, LPCC, PMH-C, CYT, a dedicated California-licensed psychotherapist with over a decade of experience specializing in maternal and perinatal mental health. She provides therapy, postpartum CBT/DBT skills coaching, and support groups through her private practice, Mental Fitness Therapy. She explains how her transition into motherhood helped propel her into the perinatal mental health field, and she highlights signs and symptoms, also known as “orange flags,” that are often missed in new moms. Ruthie shares how she incorporates yoga into therapy and how new moms can use yoga practices to manage daily stress and optimize their parenting. Despite being a therapist, Ruthie was caught off guard by the challenges of new motherhood and the juggle of parenting demands. This inspired her to pursue her certification from PSI and gain experience working with El Camino Hospital's MOM program, creating groups and providing care for struggling perinatal moms and their families. In her practice and her work, Ruthie draws from a variety of therapy modalities, including Experiential, IFS, Brainspotting, EFT-Tapping, Expressive Arts, Mindfulness, Yoga, and CBT/DBT skills. Ruthie's experience living in Russia, Israel, and the US has instilled in her a deep respect for cultural uniqueness, and she incorporates cultural strengths, creativity, and spirituality into her therapy work. Ruthie strongly believes that the best gift for a child is a parent who is striving for health, regardless of their imperfections. Show Highlights: How Ruthie struggled with the “two sides of motherhood” How the birth experiences with her daughter and son were totally different for Ruthie How the guilt-driven decision to return to work at 6 weeks postpartum created the perfect storm of stress, guilt, shame, and irritability How Ruthie obtained the perfect job at the MOMS program at El Camino–and relished the healing environment there Why so many therapists and medical professionals miss the signs and symptoms of perinatal mental health issues How Ruthie found help and healing through yoga and psychedelic-assisted therapy Signs and symptoms of postpartum issues that are commonly missed in physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral categories How Ruthie helps others find healing and recovery through the 5 S's: sleep, sunshine, social support, self-care, skills, and spirituality How yoga helps connect the body and mind to bring healing How yoga nidra (a practice that can be done at home and for free) can help new moms who struggle with sleep deprivation Ruthie's takeaways: “I want to give hope to listeners that you are capable, competent, and skillful. There are many different paths to healing, and they can be simple and small.” Resources: Connect with Ruthie and Mental Fitness Therapy: Website, LinkedIn, and Na'aleh Yoga Podcast (try Yoga Nidra with Ruthie!) As more opportunities for non-traditional grief support arise, it's no surprise that many of them are happening in historically marginalized communities who have not felt relevantly supported in those settings. The Grief Garden, co-created by Julia Mallory, a multidisiciplinary artist, and Tiana Zabala, the garden manager at Goggleworks Center for the Arts is the perfect example of this type of offering. The Grief Garden was designed to bring people together, in relationship with the outdoors, where they could engage with rest, movement, medicine making, and sound. Julia Mallory is a storyteller, writer, and artist who after the death of her eldest son Julian in 2017 also became a community grief worker. Through her words, images, and offerings, Julia invites others to acknowledge and express their own grief. Tiana Zabala is passionate about growing food, medicine, and building community. In her role as garden manager at GoggleWorks she focuses on urban farming and developing opportunities for collective healing. We discuss: What Julia & Tiana learned about grief from their families The lack of opportunity to gather and honor collective grief, especially in the Black community How grief gets pathologized in a grief avoidant society The origin of the Grief Garden event Why embodied practices like movement, song, and art are important in grief How Julia makes engaging with grief more accessible through her lived experience Farming as a metaphor for grief and the cycle of life Julia & Tiana's plans for future creative grief expression events Grief Out Loud Episode 178: Survivor's Guilt - Julia Mallory

What does theater have to do with grief? In this episode, Expressive Arts Therapists Rachelle Archer and Erika Malone join Jenn to share how storytelling through Playback Theater can serve as a powerful tool for feeling seen, heard, and part of something bigger than yourself. Playback Theater is a way for people to tell their stories and see them reflected back through a theater performance, which is especially impactful for marginalized communities and those going through challenging seasons of life. It is a form of arts for social change that honors not just grief from death, but from all of life's changes. Stacy Reck teaches art journaling to heal. Early in her counselling career, Stacy led a grief and loss group. One night the room felt very heavy, and no one wanted to share. In that moment of awkwardness, she broke out some crayons, paper, and music and had everyone draw their feelings. From that one night, everything she knew about mental health shifted and changed. Stacy is a Holistic Counselor with training in Expressive Arts, Jungian Psychology, Dream Mythology, and Holistic Leadership and is certified in Past-Life Regression Therapy. Art has this magical way of healing the body, mind, and soul. Art journaling helps you relax, solve problems, and keep track of your process. Truly, it's not about being an artist but a way to tell a story and work through your feelings and emotions. It's a meditative process where you can find peace and even happiness. Why being you is the best thing to be. Perfection is overrated! Messy IS the new perfect. How spending time with yourself in the quiet, doing something you enjoy, can heal you. You don't need to be an artist or good at art to use art journaling as a way to heal.
