This week, another milestone episode in our journey that is the InObscuria Podcast. We are also preparing for another visit to the Rock n Pod Expo in Nashville, TN, USA on April 12. Therefore, we call this episode our event horizon! A new beginning with a similar feel… Hope ya dig! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure music of all genres and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. I've got Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff of Lettuce on the show this week, and he's bringing the heavy funk vibes to Roadcase!! Constantly evolving and exploring new boundaries, Lettuce has been at the forefront of funk both in the jam world and in more traditional lanes. Their newly released latest album, Lettuce with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, is a stunning representation of the melding of classical instrumentation with the funky grooves that Lettuce inhabits, and it's a potent mixture. Shmeeans is a chill dude with a vibe that is one of a super cool funk player, but is just as down-to-earth as it gets. He talks to me about coming up at Berklee School of Music where he met his future bandmates, and we talk about the atypical path of ascendance that Lettuce took to get to where he is today. This is a great conversation and I'm thrilled to have Shmeeans on the Pod!! Have you ever had someone try to cast shade on your light? What do you do when someone tries to control you or keep you down or invisible? Last week we talked about things we can control that stop others from seeing our brilliance. This week we talk about when people, that we can't control try and do the same. So join us, and let the world see your shine! The song we used in this episode was "Knock Yourself Out" by Tower Of Power. We don't own any rights. The GURU has some very harsh words for the Commissioner of Baseball and the greedy owner of the Oakland A's, you both can rot in hell! This situation in Oakland shouldn't have happened. It makes me sad and angry to see this proud franchise and the community suffer due to the ignorance and stupidity of Manfred and Fisher! For any city to lose their sports teams is heartbreaking, but in this case it's just down right WRONG! This situation had an easy fix, but this is the worst part of sports, GREED! The GURU will always recognize the franchise as the Oakland Athletics. The GURU likes the NY Liberty and the Minnesota Lynx to advance to the WNBA Championship. Thanks for listening and enjoy the rest of your Sports Weekend. We will be back next week with Episode 238 of the GURU TALKIN SPORTS podcast.

This week heed the call of the sumo wrestling, battle-axe-wielding, baby seal-faced man! All hail Johnny the Mighty Tior!!! Yep, it's another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We're talking about a seminal New Wave Of “Not So” British Heavy band turned Power Metal trendsetters: RIOT! Infamous as much for horrible album cover visuals and weird heavy metal mascot, Riot is a true heavy metal tour de force that is still kicking ass in 2024. We focus our listening on the first half of their career from their start in 1977 until their transition to pure power metal in 1990. They were always slightly ahead of the curve and trends, but never achieved the success of many of their peers or bands they influenced. We think RIOT shoulda been huge!!!What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Well, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This episode covers a band clearly in the Lost category for most and forgotten for others. As always, we hope that we turn you on to something new. You can check out the documentary we referenced several times during the show here: three-part documentary: Riot – Fight or Fall, available here on Youtube Songs this week include:Riot – “Warrior” from Rock City (1977)Riot – “Road Racin'” from Narita (1979)Riot – “Don't Hold Back” from Fire Down Under (1981)Riot – “Loanshark” from Restless Breed (1982)Riot - “Born In America” from Born In America (1983)Riot – “Thundersteel” from Thundersteel (1988)Riot – “Little Miss Death” from The Privilege Of Power (1990)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
HPR All Things Considered host Dave Lawrence welcomes back longtime guest Emilio Castillo from Tower of Power. The sax legend and founder of the band is also a gifted storyteller, and shares fun memories with Dave ahead of their return to Hawaiʻi at the Blue Note July 19 & 20.
To kick off the show, Joe tries to trick David by being on a Insta Live at the same time as recording the pod. That soon falls flat though as David knew anyway. In spite of their discomfort at being ‘live', they plough on regardless and let's just say, things don't go smoothly. But then they get one of the viewers to join them who saves the days with some wonderful words of encouragement - thanks Emma! Then Joe tells David about his magical day at the ceremony to award Sue Johnston the Freedom Of The City Of Liverpool and also explains why he's not going to Thorpe Park today to ride the rollercoasters. David then puts a call-out to the Patreons to see who's been on The Tower Of Power waterslide in Tenerife. After a short wait there are plenty of Chatabiscuits joining them - so let the rollercoaster club commence! Like Into The Music, Zach uses WMP to expose local artists to a wider audience literally the world over. But there's a lot more to Zach than WMP—he's a band director, a studio owner, producer, engineer, arranger, and one heck of sax player as is evidenced by the jazz/funk/rock instrumental "I Don't Know" by The Fell Boyzs. Send us a Text Message.Catching up with Ozzie Melendez, our second trombone player, is like being teleported into the heart of the music industry. From his musical beginnings in fourth grade to landing the big gig with Willie Colon's band, Ozzie shares the essence of a musician's journey, and why it's crucial to seize every opportunity to prove oneself. We swap hilarious anecdotes featuring fellow musician Terry Nigrelli and reminisce about Ozzy's inaugural gig tour in Peru. Striding onto the bigger stage, Ozzy takes us backstage, revealing his experiences with big band legends like Bruce Springsteen, Mark Anthony, and Blood Sweat and Tears. The essence of a good gig, he believes, lies in preparation and keen attention. The conversation takes a nostalgic turn as we compare the club dates of the past to the gigs of today and the unique challenges a trombone player faces. As we move towards the end of our discussion, Ozzy peels back the curtain on his collaborations with various musicians, the challenges and the opportunities encountered as a free musician, and the four phases of a musician's life. Tune in to be enlightened about the music industry, the evolution of recording music, and how the industry has drastically changed over the past two decades.Check out Ozzie's publication "Dynamic Flexibility" and his full bio at https://ozziemelendez.com/Check out our collaboration at https://youtu.be/yUqwLFUmg8gSupport the Show.
