It's another week with the full squad even though some are under the weather. We opened up talking about recent purchases that we immediately regretted. Florida Man takes us to Clearwater involving a man getting dirty. Chase has the latest She's Always Right but a bit different with some cliches. Jose has the latest WWFU where he gives plenty of details about last week's mess ups. Kevin brings back an old classic segment Picture Time and also wraps up the episode with his weekly Dad Tip. It is arguably one of the darkest days in Cleveland baseball history. On June 4, 1974, the Indians held a "Ten Cent Beer Night" promotion to help boost fan attendance as the team struggled to fill seats. Their ploy worked, and over 25,000 fans descended upon Municipal Stadium to watch the Indians take on the Texas Rangers. But the cheap beer stunt also led to something never seen before, or ever again, on a Major League field - a violent, drunken riot. In this episode, 19 News investigators Brian Duffy and Jen Picciano revisit the chaotic game with a group of guests, including former Indians manager and first baseman Mike Hargrove, who was a rookie with the Rangers that night.
Phoenix Rising came into tonight's match with a point to prove and points to earn against a basement-dwelling El Paso Locomotive FC. A slow first half found Rising in a familiar side-to-side lull. The hometown kid JP Scearce scored right before halftime to break the deadlock. The second half picked up a bit and after some sustained Rising pressure coupled with a lack of El Paso threat, led to a beautiful transition moment. Pape Mar Boye turned defense to offense with a high interception and, after some rhythmic interplay, put the ball in the back of the net. Send us a Text Message. For this episode of Brewstilled, it's the first episode a segment called Bad Keg in where we examine events in sports that went wrong. A bad keg event involves sporting event combined with alcohol that ended in disaster. For this first episode, I'll be discussing the story of 10 Cent Beer Night, a baseball promotion that went badly in the city of Cleveland. The promo was held on June 4th in a game between the Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers. The promo involved beer priced at 10 cents with no limits. It was supposed to be a promo to increase fan attendance and to lift the spirits of the Cleveland fanbase, but the promo ended in disaster as it resulted in a full-scale drunken riot when fans charged onto the field resulting in a full-scale brawl. I'll be discussing 10 Cent Beer Night and its lasting legacy in baseball lore in the first edition of Bad Keg. It's all here on Brewstilled.
Phoenix Rising went into Saturday's match with a raucous crowd behind then. With both Pride Night and $1 Beer Night in flow, it was set to be an intriguing 2023 USL Championship Final rematch. And then the whistle blew. Phoenix's attack continued to uninspire as the team was left searching for answers on which starting 11 best suits them. Held without a goal for the fifth time this season, it was a familiar drought for Rising. Join Owain Evans and Max Simpson as they break down tonight's match. In the summer of 1974, the Cleveland Indians were not a very good team and their owner was thinking of every way possible to get fans in the seats. How about this for an idea: 10-cent Beer Night? All you can drink for just 10-cents a cup. What could go wrong? To the 9th inning we go and after a game highlighted with fans jumping onto the field, many of them in their birthday suits, the chaos turned into complete bedlam. Rangers Outfielder Jeff Burroughs was being harassed in right field by fans who were surrounding him. His manager Billy Martin led the "Charge of the Light Brigade" with his players rushing out of the dugout... bats in hand. Seats were being thrown from the top deck onto the field. 60,000 cups of beer had been purchased and the results of that were now evident. It was a full-scale riot. Milt Wilcox pitched the top of the 9th inning for the Indians and tells us how some of his "connected" friends kept him out of harms way while Cleveland writer Vince Guerreri, author of the book, "Weird Moments in Clebeland Sports" tells us that despite the comeplete bedlam this wasn't the first time they held the promotion... and shockingly... it wouldn't be the last... Wilcox and Guerreri have stories you will not believe on one of the craziest nights in the history of baseball... 10-cent Beer Night on the Past Our Prime podcast Learn more about your ad choices. Fifty years ago this month, Cleveland had a promotion that simply couldn't fail, until it did, spectacularly and utterly predictably. The result of Ten Cent Beer Night was a victory for the Texas Rangers, and only for the Texas Rangers, as it was one of five Major League Baseball games to be forfeited in the expansion era, and half a century later, brings Colleen and Chrystal back together after their spring vacations. You know, we've tried for a really long time to go to bat for Ohio. The rest of the world calls it the armpit of the Midwest, but we call it home and it's where our heart is…unfortunately until recently, we were unaware of just how disappointing Ohio was. In just a quick hour, we'll explain why Ohio probably won't ever shake the title they've so rightfully earned, the mistake on the lake. Also I'd say take a drink every time we says “that's the most Cleveland thing,” but after this episode, we won't be encouraging anyone to drink ever again…or at least for a couple more weeks. Unfortunately Mick was unwell last week, so we bring you one of our most popular episodes. Wimbledon will be back next week. On 4 June 1974, the Cleveland Indians decided to host a ten-cent beer night to attract fans; beer at the stadium normally cost 65 cents, so ten cents was a real incentive. The Indians were in a 30-year slump at the time, as was the city, their river would catch fire with alarming regularity, so the scene was set for trouble. Oh, and it was a full moon. The result was pure, unbridled chaos. There were streakers, firecrackers, a woman trying to kiss the home plate umpire and eventually, a full-scale riot. Ten Cent Beer Night was a special night at a baseball game where beer cost 10 cents per cup. As expected, this resulted in mass chaos and riots during the game. Well, we're back with 1970's baseball again. This time, the hapless baseball team from Cleveland decided to offer a 10-Cent Beer promotional event... but they neglected a key restriction that would result in a riot that left both teams injured, the stadium getting torn up, and a massive force of Cleveland police coming to put an end to it. In this episode we'll talk about the city of Cleveland, the things that REALLY should be part of planning any event centered around alcohol, and the truly scary events of that night in June. Kick your feet up, settle back, and maybe drink a soft beverage as we explore what might be the worst riot in baseball history. This week we're going back to our oddity category. You know that Crystal is a huge fan of baseball, and she came upon a story that's almost too wild to believe. In 1974, the Cleveland Indians (the team now known as the Cleveland Guardians), had a problem with dwindling attendance. They hadn't attracted a crowd in years and were perennial losers. So some marketing genius thought up the idea of 10 cent beer night - and it went about as well as you might expect. Baseball chaos galore. On What We're Watching, we talk about one of Crystal's favorite movies - the 1989 comedy “Major League.” On Layla and Coffee talk, the girls become pack leaders as Brett's parents were in town.
