If there's one thing that gets people's blood pumpin', it's sports. All over the world on any given day, you can find people getting into passionate arguments about whose team has a better chance of making the playoffs, or the finals, or the World Cup or whatever. Sometimes there are fisticuffs involved! There are pubs in Scotland where you're not allowed to wear your football team colors, for fear of a brawl breaking out. In my hometown, when our college team won a big basketball game, people would celebrate by turning over cars and setting stuff on fire. Parents often treat their elementary school kids' Little League games like the fate of the free world is at stake. My point is, people get INTENSE about this stuff. And things can get real, real weird. This week, we bring you two stories that exemplify that weirdness.Case 1: The Wild Lies of Kevin Hart. Buckle up, degenerates—we're diving into the most unhinged night in baseball history: Ten Cent Beer Night. Picture this: a stadium full of rowdy Clevelanders pounding dirt-cheap beer like it's the purge, and shocker—it ends in a full-scale riot. We're talking streakers, fistfights, drunken fans storming the field, and the home team literally running for their lives. And honestly? For a city that lit a river on fire, released a million balloons into the sky only to cause mass chaos, and watched LeBron leave twice, this might still be Cleveland's lowest moment. Let's get into this beautiful disaster.--Boost Your Focus & Energy with Magic Mind!Looking for a way to stay focused and energized? Ten Cent Beer Night was a promotion held by Major League Baseball's Cleveland Indians during a game against the Texas Rangers at Cleveland Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio on June 4, 1974. The promotion was meant to improve attendance at the game by offering cups of beer for just 10 cents each, with a limit of six beers per purchase but no limit on the number of purchases made during the game. Things did not go well... Plus, Joel has a fun Facebook Marketplace interaction and we go through our picks for Week 9 of the NFL.

It is arguably one of the darkest days in Cleveland baseball history. On June 4, 1974, the Indians held a "Ten Cent Beer Night" promotion to help boost fan attendance as the team struggled to fill seats. Their ploy worked, and over 25,000 fans descended upon Municipal Stadium to watch the Indians take on the Texas Rangers. But the cheap beer stunt also led to something never seen before, or ever again, on a Major League field - a violent, drunken riot. In this episode, 19 News investigators Brian Duffy and Jen Picciano revisit the chaotic game with a group of guests, including former Indians manager and first baseman Mike Hargrove, who was a rookie with the Rangers that night.

Send us a Text Message. For this episode of Brewstilled, it's the first episode a segment called Bad Keg in where we examine events in sports that went wrong. A bad keg event involves sporting event combined with alcohol that ended in disaster. For this first episode, I'll be discussing the story of 10 Cent Beer Night, a baseball promotion that went badly in the city of Cleveland. The promo was held on June 4th in a game between the Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers. The promo involved beer priced at 10 cents with no limits. It was supposed to be a promo to increase fan attendance and to lift the spirits of the Cleveland fanbase, but the promo ended in disaster as it resulted in a full-scale drunken riot when fans charged onto the field resulting in a full-scale brawl. I'll be discussing 10 Cent Beer Night and its lasting legacy in baseball lore in the first edition of Bad Keg. It's all here on Brewstilled.
Fifty years ago this month, Cleveland had a promotion that simply couldn't fail, until it did, spectacularly and utterly predictably. The result of Ten Cent Beer Night was a victory for the Texas Rangers, and only for the Texas Rangers, as it was one of five Major League Baseball games to be forfeited in the expansion era, and half a century later, brings Colleen and Chrystal back together after their spring vacations. In the second hour, Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes were joined by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk to discuss how Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson's new $140-million contract may impact the market, how he's expecting teams to adjust to the league's new kickoff rule and more. Bernstein and Holmes then shifted their focus to the Bears. How are the Bears balancing having a rookie quarterback on a roster that's ready to compete? They listened and reacted to coach Matt Eberflus answer that question. Later, during the High Noon segment, Bernstein and Holmes discussed the wild baseball-related story of Ten-Cent Beer Night.

Unfortunately Mick was unwell last week, so we bring you one of our most popular episodes. Wimbledon will be back next week. On 4 June 1974, the Cleveland Indians decided to host a ten-cent beer night to attract fans; beer at the stadium normally cost 65 cents, so ten cents was a real incentive. The Indians were in a 30-year slump at the time, as was the city, their river would catch fire with alarming regularity, so the scene was set for trouble. Oh, and it was a full moon. The result was pure, unbridled chaos. There were streakers, firecrackers, a woman trying to kiss the home plate umpire and eventually, a full-scale riot. Titus O'Reily and Mick Molloy examine a night that started badly and then got worse. Titus has three live shows coming up in May in Melbourne. You can get tickets here. It's hard enough to lose when you straight up get beat on the field. But when circumstances conspire to prevent you from even being able too compete? That's especially frustrating. That's what happened to the Dodgers 28 years ago this week, when a misguided promotion, questionable umpiring, and a mob mentality led to the last forfeit in baseball history to date. Mike and Bill take that as the impetus to look back at the only five games that have been forfeited since 1954, and the wild and disparate circumstances that led to their early conclusions. Plus, happy birthday to Bob Horner and Andy Messersmith!

Disaster strikes in Cleveland again! In this one, Ian and Liv talk about a marketing event by the Cleveland Indians in 1974, where beers were sold for 10 cents a piece at a Tuesday night Indians game. Much to nobody's surprise, the fans were wildly over-served, formed an angry mob, and rioted throughout the stadium by the end of the game. The 70's were quite the time. Also, Ian had to remove about 30 minutes of him and Liv cackle-laughing from this episode during post-production. It took him much longer than expected.
Well, we're back with 1970's baseball again. This time, the hapless baseball team from Cleveland decided to offer a 10-Cent Beer promotional event... but they neglected a key restriction that would result in a riot that left both teams injured, the stadium getting torn up, and a massive force of Cleveland police coming to put an end to it. In this episode we'll talk about the city of Cleveland, the things that REALLY should be part of planning any event centered around alcohol, and the truly scary events of that night in June. Kick your feet up, settle back, and maybe drink a soft beverage as we explore what might be the worst riot in baseball history. This week we're going back to our oddity category. You know that Crystal is a huge fan of baseball, and she came upon a story that's almost too wild to believe. In 1974, the Cleveland Indians (the team now known as the Cleveland Guardians), had a problem with dwindling attendance. They hadn't attracted a crowd in years and were perennial losers. So some marketing genius thought up the idea of 10 cent beer night - and it went about as well as you might expect. Baseball chaos galore. On What We're Watching, we talk about one of Crystal's favorite movies - the 1989 comedy “Major League.” On Layla and Coffee talk, the girls become pack leaders as Brett's parents were in town. In 1974, the Cleveland Indians baseball team held a promotion for their game against the Texas Rangers called "10 Cent Beer Night." Fans could purchase cups of beer for just 10 cents. What ensued was chaos as fans became heavily intoxicated and began to riot, in the stands and onto the field. Join Kyle and Ardon as they dive into the absolutely buck wild story of Ten Cent Beer Night! Ten Cent Beer Night was a promotion held by Major League Baseball's Cleveland Guardians during a game against the Texas Rangers at Cleveland Stadium on Tuesday, June 4, 1974. The idea behind the promotion was to attract more fans to the game by offering cups of low-alcohol beer for just 10 cents each, a substantial discount on the regular price of 65 cents, with a limit of six beers per purchase but with no limit on the number of purchases made during the game. Which led to some.... Crazy things. Hold on to your asses, because things are about to get backwards!

It's the Season 6 Finale and we saved our best for last. Powered by interviews from a proposed documentary we give an oral history of the infamous Ten Cent Beer Night in Cleveland, Ohio on June 4, 1974. We hear from the people who were there that muggy night on Lake Erie when a baseball game became a beer-fueled riot. Special thanks to our friends John and Seth from Grey Lodge Productions for sharing over 7 hours of their interviews with those who lived through Ten Cent Beer Night. Ten Cent Beer Night, the misguided promotional idea by the Cleveland Indians turned violent as over-served Clevelanders stormed the field and attacked the players. We hear the story told through the words of the players, announcers, umpires, journalists, photographers and even the son of the Indians Executive VP. Mike Hargrove, first baseman that night for the visiting Texas Rangers, shares his story of that night on the field at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, two decades before he became the Cleveland Indians manager. We sit down with filmmaker Seth Moherman about the ridiculous scene that night in Downtown Cleveland when the Cleveland Indians decided to sell beer for 10 cents a cup. We look at the economic and political troubles that defined the summer of 1974: the oil crisis, Watergate, stagflation and high unemployment numbers. We also discuss the deteriorating situation in the City of Cleveland in the 1970s and how the money problems of the Cleveland Indians led to this event happening in the first place. Beer for a dime? So conceivably, a person can get trashed at the ballpark for just one dollar? Many such cases occurred on June 4th, 1974 at Cleveland Stadium between the Indians and Texas Rangers, which caused a brouhaha between the fans and players as the game progressed (or regressed). Jim Clark is the play-by-play man for the Akron RubberDucks and the author of the book Rally 'Round Cleveland, which chronicles the 1974 Cleveland Indians. Why the '74 team, who finished with a mediocre 77-85 record? Well, if it wasn't for the likes of Gaylord Perry, Oscar Gamble, George Hendrick, and others, and the excitement they brought, the Indians may have moved elsewhere. If one thinks there is no possibility their team could relocate, Jim assures them they are wrong (see the 1995 Cleveland Browns). Jim still has copies of his book available: https://www.amazon.com/Rally-Round-Cleveland-Franchise-Saving-Indians/dp/0578205300 Follow Tony on his various social media platforms: Twitter - @TonyMazur Instagram - @tmaze25 Be sure to subscribe to Tony's Patreon. $5 a month gets you bonus content, extra podcasts, and early access to guests. Eric and Craig begin Episode 23 with a look at the red-hot Oakland A's fresh off a weekend sweep against the division rival Houston Astros that extended their winning streak to nine games. Meanwhile, the St. Louis Cardinals (2-3) have not played a game since July 29 and are idled until at least August 12th. Along the way, Eric and Craig followed a winding road from Karl Spooner to Dave DeBusschere, Danny Ainge, Chuck Conners and finally, Ten-Cent Beer Night. In chapter two, the co-hosts compared Buffalo Springfield to the Manchester group The Stone Roses. Is the latter group Hall of Fame stock as well or does the former's baby boomer and post-Springfield accomplishment credentials carry the day? They then turn their attention to great country music one-hit wonders. Have you ever wondered why some artists strike it big only to fall hard with the follow-up releases? Eric and Craig consider some possible reasons in this segment. Agree or disagree, it sounds like another Spotify playlist is coming soon.In the final segment, Eric and Craig talk about a British doctor who ran 22 miles with a facemask while monitoring his oxygen levels, a school official who can closely monitor skirt length and leggings but somehow can't enforce a mandate to wear a face mask, and the rapidly changing world of college athletics as the clock ticks closer to the (scheduled) opening day for college football 2020.
Bad things come in fours. Leigh tells us about a bottleneck at a Who concert, a stampede at the Roskilde festival, a human garlic press at a Hillsborough soccer match, and the perils of Ten-Cent Beer Night. The Who, Pearl Jam, Liverpool versus Nottingham Forest, and the Cleveland Indians versus the Texas Rangers... and beer. Lots and lots of too-cheap beer. Fitz and Tim are wondering how Sarah's doing in Club Penguin. I think she should name one of her puffles Wily Mo. Just a thought. The Sox are heading to Colorado after taking two of three in San Diego, but man, we really wish it was three of three. Mission Improbable is officially on: we desperately bargain what it will take for Boston to secure a Wild Card spot. ALSO: -Since we missed some time between episodes, we talked about the resumed game against Kansas City, and pitch an idea to make that scenario more of a common occurrence, while also paying homage to Ten Cent Beer Night. -The Players Weekend jerseys stunk, but the cleats were awesome across the board. If you disagree with that second point, we had something to say about a tweet on the matter. -This edition of "Hey, Remember Him?" lead to a conversation about dinosaurs and the Bible. -We talked about fantasy sprotz, including one of the most ridiculous baseball trades we've ever heard. Seriously, it's either blasphemy or collusion. Maybe both. Who's to say? Intro song is "Baseball" by Hippo Campus and the outro song is "Fail Recorder: Mission Impossible Themesong" from the channel Rec0rder Mast3r on YouTube. An unconventional pick, yes, but a worthy one as well. Link to that video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6QZCU9rTiw Follow us on Twitter! Tim's @timdurgin9, Sarah's @skg_18, and I'm @FitzyMoPena. My mic kept popping this episode, also, so apologies in advance. Or apologies now as you're reading this during the episode. Or apologies after you already heard the episode. No matter when you're reading this, my bad. Subscribe, rate the podcast five (5) stars, and leave a review, and maybe I'll make sure there's less popping next time (I'll make sure there's less popping regardless, but you should also do all of the above regardless as well. Even Stevens.). I'm rambling now. I should probably just post the episode and go to bed.
The Indians hosted a 10-cent beer night in 1975 and it was mayhem. The bases were stolen. Fights were had. Streakers streaked. The game had to be forfeited.
:17 - Apple is restructuring its music, TV, and podcast divisions, opting for more subscription-based services than purchasing individual songs, albums, and movies. Jim Clark was there 45 years ago today, and lived to tell his story through his book, Rally ‘Round Cleveland.

Story: Ten Cent Beer Night - In 1974 the Cleveland Indians turned to the forbidden fruit of promo giveaways to cure their ailing attendance. Results are predictable, except the part where a guy was nearly killed with a gallon jug of Thunderbird. That surprised everyone. They played the Texas Rangers that night, but their real opponent was human nature. :27 - Ray begins Monday’s show about the struggling Indians, who dropped the first two games of the ALDS to the Houston Astros. Do they still have a shot? Is their window closing? 11:11 - Dr. Gary Riggs, our morning show veterinarian, stopped by, as he does each Monday around 7:30. They talk about allergies with pets, if dogs get sunburn, and dispelling the rumor about dogs being colorblind. Dr. Riggs has offices in Norton and Barberton. 23:20 - The Rialto Theatre has been rejuvenated, and the rest of Kenmore is going through the same process. The Rialto is the 1590 WAKR Business of the Week! 35:11 - The 1974 Cleveland Indians only won 77 games. So why is there a book out about them? Because if it weren’t for 1974, Jacobs/Progressive Field isn’t built. No Belle or Lofton or Baerga or Thome or Sizemore or Sabathia or Lindor or Kluber or three Ramirez players (Manny, Alex, Jose) don’t happen. Jim Clark has a book out about that season, from Ten Cent Beer Night to possibly moving the team to New Orleans or Seattle.
This week John Takes Rebecca out to the ballgame (her favorite place) and they talk about baseball food (traditional and very non-traditional). After going through that panoply of garbage food we talk about one of John's favorite stories in baseball history: Ten Cent Beer Night. You might have heard about it but do you really know the craziness that happened? Join us and find out. Thanks for listening!!!
