Send us a textDavid Bowie's “Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)” is, for many fans, his last great album. Mick regards it as one of Bowie's best, with the singles "Ashes to Ashes" and "Fashion". Mick and Jeff talk through what makes this album great, and look at the music environment as Bowie, along with many other 70's greats, faced the changes and challenges of the 80's.“Knockin' on Heaven's Door” offers a long line of new entrants to Rock'n'Roll Heaven including Herbie Flowers, Tito Jackson, Kris Kristofferson and Liam Payne from One Direction. Our Album You Must Listen to Before you Die, fresh from Robert Dimery's book, is Dexy's Midnight Runners' “Don't Stand Me Down”, a massive failure on release in 1985 but receiving a fresh critical re-evaluation in modern times. We didn't like it! Not least because of their complete rip-off of “Werewolves of London” by Warren Zevon. It is arguably one of the darkest days in Cleveland baseball history. On June 4, 1974, the Indians held a "Ten Cent Beer Night" promotion to help boost fan attendance as the team struggled to fill seats. Their ploy worked, and over 25,000 fans descended upon Municipal Stadium to watch the Indians take on the Texas Rangers. But the cheap beer stunt also led to something never seen before, or ever again, on a Major League field - a violent, drunken riot. In this episode, 19 News investigators Brian Duffy and Jen Picciano revisit the chaotic game with a group of guests, including former Indians manager and first baseman Mike Hargrove, who was a rookie with the Rangers that night.
Who was the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run? Over a four year period in the 1930s, the dismembered body parts of at least a dozen people popped up throughout Cleveland. The serial killer behind the horrific crimes was never captured or identified and, nearly 90 years later, the infamous ‘Torso Murders' remain unsolved. In this episode, 19 News anchor Brian Duffy takes an in-depth look at the killings alongside experts with unprecedented knowledge about the case. The podcast also explores the new developments he recently uncovered regarding the Torso Killer's unidentified victims, including plans to exhume remains for DNA testing.

Good morning from London where the FTSE 100 is pretty much where it was yesterday, scudding along at its lowest since late November at around 7,450 points. Today is very much a tale of two stocks, with Watches of Switzerland taking a real pounding and Paddy Power owner Flutter Entertainment having a very strong start to the morning. Watches of Switzerland shares are down nearly 30% after they were issued a profit warning. The company says it now expects financial year 2024 revenue of around £1.54 billion, down from previous guidance of £1.65-1.7 billion. Brian Duffy, chief executive said: "The festive period was particularly volatile this year for the luxury sector, with consumers allocating spend to other categories such as fashion, beauty, hospitality and travel." And Paddy Power's 10% share price boost this morning came despite US trading being hit by some “customer friendly” sporting results, particularly in the NFL. Peel Hunt expects Flutter's additional listing in New York (expected 29 January) to be a significant driver of the share price as US domestic investors invest in a local market leader. And finally some good news over at Royal Mail owner International Distribution Services, which said it achieved its best Christmas operational performance for four years. Group revenues are up by 9.8% on the previous year, with Royal Mail winning back customers following last year's industrial action. That's all for now but stay tuned for plenty of interviews and news updates throughout the day. #ProactiveInvestors #FTSE100 #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
Watches of Switzerland Group plc demonstrated its recent growth via their financial results, announcing notable momentum in the United States market. As outlined in the earnings call by CEO Brian Duffy, the company experienced a significant uptick in domestic sales compared to the previous financial year. Concurrently, international sales took a hit due to the Brexit-impacted removal of tax-free shopping in the UK. Nevertheless, the company has been able to offset any losses by strengthening its focus on domestic affairs. The first half of the fiscal year showed how the company has faced the challenging economic environment by displaying growth in both the UK and the US markets. The company declared a group revenue increase of 2% at constant currency, while the US reported an even more commendable figure of 11% growth at constant currency. Watches of Switzerland Group plc's successful navigation amidst adversity has been credited to certain key drivers. These include a substantial net cash position of GBP60 million, acquisitions of luxury showrooms from Ernest Jones, and the introduction of Rolex certified pre-owned watches. Another element of their growth strategy has been the significant expansion in showroom space and a marked focus on e-commerce, a testament to their adaptability to the digital landscape. However, growth hasn't been without a few roadblocks. Adjusted EBITDA did decline by 8% at constant currency and 10% at reported rates. This is attributable mainly to changes in product mix and costs associated with interest-free credit, leading to net margin reduction. Additionally, Brexit has had a negative impact on international sales due to the removal of tax-free shopping in the UK. Despite these challenges, the company has elaborated on their strategies for growth. The emphasis has been on showroom expansion and investment in luxury designs to provide an enhanced offering to their customers. The company has also introduced Rolex certified pre-owned watches and expanded into luxury branded jewelry to diversify offerings. In addition to this, a new store in Manchester has been opened. Looking ahead, Watches of Switzerland Group plc intends to continue investing in showroom expansions and refurbishments, planning substantial capital investments. Expanding into the luxury branded jewelry market is identified as an attractive growth avenue, as well as focusing on e-commerce. With predicted sales and profits to double by the fiscal year 2028, the company is dedicated to sustained growth over the next five years, solidifying its position as a key player in the industry. Part one of our discussion of U.S. campaign financing starts before the colonies had gained their independence and covers some of the earliest ways that money was collected for political parties. Trump and DeSantis:Former President Donald Trump is being urged to run for president in 2024 with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as his running mate. Some Republicans believe that Trump and DeSantis would be a formidable team. They argue that Trump's charisma and DeSantis's popularity would be a winning combination. They also believe that the two men are ideologically aligned and would be able to work together effectively. As to SCOTUS:A nearly $2 million sale of property co-owned by Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch to a prominent law firm executive in 2017 is raising new questions about the lax ethics reporting requirements for Supreme Court justices.Property records from Grand County, Colorado, show that the Walden Group LLC – a limited-liability company in which Gorsuch was a partner – sold a 40-acre property on the Colorado River to Brian Duffy, chief executive officer of the prominent law firm Greenberg Traurig. One of the most serious ongoing accusations is that Justice Gorsuch has used his position on the court to benefit his wife as well, who is a lobbyist. According to reports, Justice Gorsuch has allowed his wife to use his office to meet with government officials and to lobby for her clients. This is a clear conflict of interest, and it raises serious questions about Justice Gorsuch's ability to remain impartial on the court.Other justices have also been accused of taking material benefits. Justice Clarence Thomas has been accused of accepting lavish gifts from a wealthy donor. Justice Samuel Alito has been accused of using his position on the court to benefit his son, who is a lawyer.
EPISODE 187: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: The Corruption is coming down so heavy I feel like I need to wear a HAT. Now we have to indict a SECOND Supreme Court Justice. Nine days after he got onto the Court, Neil Gorsuch sold his part of a Colorado house for at least $250,000 to the head of a mega-law firm that has since been involved in 22 CASES before Gorsuch's court. Gorsuch has voted for their side in 7 of 10 cases. And of course:THE DISCLOSURE FORM FOR THE SALE? GORSUCH LEFT THE BOX FOR THE NAME OF THE BUYER, BLANK. The Senate Judiciary Committee can't subpoena Gorsuch or the buyer or Clarence Thomas or anybody because Dianne Feinstein is still MIA and can't provide the clinching vote. And John Roberts has finally replied to Chairman Dick Durbin's "invitation" to testify, and he said no way. He might as well have said "GOOD LUCK... DICK." Meanwhile Ted Cruz confesses, on tape, to the Dueling Electoral Slates/Grand Commission/Let's Party Like It's 1876 Coup that he and other Senators and Congressmen started to run on January 6th before they were interrupted by the OTHER coup. And remember, as the trial begin, when Trump defends himself in the E. Jean Carroll rape case by saying "she's not my type" what he's really saying is "she's not my type TO RAPE." B-BLOCK (19:44) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Biden is too old? He'll be 81 on Election Day and Trump will be 78. And he failed to do...what? And your younger choice who can keep the Serial Killer out of the White House is... who? And why Fox didn't collapse at 8 PM after firing Carlson, why he hasn't said anything, and why he seemingly turned from the moderate he appeared to be on CNN and MSNBC into the monster on Fox (Frankly: the success of Maddow, Scarborough and I broke him). THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD (28:13) Saluting Alito at Harvard; the far right host now hoping to ban books, trans, and "weird sex" did his own sex film just a decade ago; and the woman over whom NBC's Jeff Shell destroyed his career reportedly was also hooking up with the now 80-year old billionaire owner of Hockey's Seattle Kraken. Hey, Babe, wanna ride on my Zamboni? C-BLOCK (34:40) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Titus, on death row in New York (35:50) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: My appendix burst and not only did I not know it for two days, but I kept working - AND beat CNN in the ratings (today, my burst appendix by itself could beat CNN in the ratings).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We talk to Geoff Marsh, one of the curators of a new exhibition about the 1973 album Aladdin Sane and to Dave Robinson, aka ‘Robbo', legendary co-founder of Stiff Records. Geoff tells us how photographer, the late Brian Duffy, created the lightning flash image of David Bowie. That album cover has gone on to remain one of the world's three most instantly recognisable images - the other two are John Pasche's Hot Lips logo for the Rolling Stones and Hipgnosis's cover for Dark Side of the Moon. Aladdin Sane: 50 Years, which runs at Southbank until the 28th May, celebrates the anniversary of this important cultural icon. Accompanying the exhibition are talks, live music, two nights of joyous club music and poetry. Meanwhile, Dave Robinson, who created hits for Madness, Tracey Ullman, Elvis Costello, Ian Drury, The Pogues and many more, regales us with tales of being in America as Jimi Hendrix's tour manager and putting together Bob Marley's greatest hits to create Legend, the best-selling reggae album of all time. You can hear Dave telling his highly entertaining and improbable but true stories on his tour, We Came, We Saw, We Left – The Horse Speaks, which he's taking around the country until 15th May. An extraordinary opportunity to listen to this conversation about the music that has survived half a century and continues to influence and inspire millions worldwide.

This week on The Raw Ingredients Podcast, we've got a great treat for all you loyal listeners straight out of Philly, PA - no, not the Fresh Prince who was West Philadelphia born and raised, if we remember correctly - it's the hilarious and hard-working Chef Brian Duffy, the foremost public figure rocking the surname Duffy in America today (Sorry, Patrick Duffy, but you haven't really done much since "Step by Step" in the 1990s ... and we don't count the TNT "Dallas" reboot nonsense. Do better). Chefs Pete and Brian talk the talk about walking the walk, as we learn about how Chef Brian's origin story with his culinary career got started through the quintessential Sunday night dinners he enjoyed with his Irish-Italian family. That love and passion for good food and comradery is what spurred his awesome adventures throughout his career and whether it was learning under a James Beard Award-winning chef at The Four Seasons in Philadelphia, creating and crafting the "New Celtic" cuisine, rescuing bars on a certain television show about rescuing bars or building his own brand to create "Duffified Spaces" across the globe, everyone can enjoy and engage with Chef Brian's terrific tales. So, grab your silverware and settle in for a good, long dinner of delightful dialogue - you won't want to miss a single Duffified dish on this week's episode. @myworldchef Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook https://chefbrianduffy.com/ https://www.myworldchef.com/ https://www.barandrestaurantexpo.com/
Chef Brian Duffy joins the show to talk turkey before Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving Eve, Bee Hive! Chef Brian Duffy joins the show to talk turkey with us. We've got back to back IQ winners, and Bill shares all of the fun things going on this Thanksgiving Weekend in Bee Positive.
Stay tuned to hear from Bravo TV's Below Deck star, Chef Ben Robinson while he sat down to discuss what it's like to create a multitude of culinary works of art on a yacht, where to find the best markets while in-port across the globe, and even what his favorite cuisine to create is. Then we spoke with friend of the show, Chef Brian Duffy as he dishes out what some of his favorite finds were during the Taste of Lancaster this year, what he has been up to lately, and what he was dishing up during his demo! After a short break we'll also hear from Chef Edward Covino and how his scratch-made soups and stews are not only packed with an abundance of nutritious food, the meals are an ideal way to feed your hunger without worrying about all the prep work. We'll dig into how his pre-portioned and packaged meals are also perfect to bring out some of your own creativity in the kitchen too. And afterwards we will speak with Chef Barry Sexton as he represented all of NJ, PA, and beyond while he created his flavorful mushroom-based quesadillas and risotto for everyone to enjoy. And keep your ears peeled for where to find him next with the holiday season fast approaching. Lastly, we'll hear from the hottest sauces to hit the market with Bev Jenkins with her company Hot Wings on the Run. She created a plethora of saucy ways to spice up your next tailgate or football party by adding her hot wing sauces to whatever you choose. And for those of you who LOVE the heat--she even gifted us with her ghost-pepper based one, BJ's XXXtreme Spicy Sauce. And speaking of spicy, we'll round out our episode with the very cordial owner of Frisco's Chicken, Mr. Francisco Gomez. He joined co-host Amaris Pollock and guest host Chef Barbie Marshall to discuss Frisco's Chicken's authentic latin-based menu options as well as how he brought the heart of the cuisine to the Lancaster area.
In this episode, Bina Palnitkar and Jordan Grotzinger discuss the Northern District of Illinois' deep dive into what it takes to properly plead misappropriation and inevitable disclosure, and address the preemption doctrine. Celebrity chef and restaurant consultant Brian Duffy (Bar Rescue, Date Plate) talks about industry pain points, his experience opening a restaurant during the pandemic, and best practices for treating staff on the latest Food Institute Podcast. “I really believe in educating staff and I believe in empowering them.” – Chef Brian Duffy More about Chef Brian Duffy: Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Chef Brian Duffy had his first experiences in the kitchen as a young child with his big Irish-Italian Family. Those experiences introduced him to culinary life, and led him to study at Philadelphia's The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College. Culinary school may have taught him technique, but it was those Sunday nights cooking with his family where he developed his passion. After graduation, Chef Duffy worked under James Beard Award winning Chef Jean Marie LaCroix at The Four Seasons in Philadelphia. From there, he partnered in opening restaurants for employers & even a few of his own. It was through opening his own brick and mortar that Duffy began to realize his flair for refined, modernized pub fare and coined the term “New Celtic” cuisine. Duffy brought his “New Celtic” point of view to the Dave Magrogan Group as their Corporate Executive Chef for their brands. In the Meantime, Duffy formed "Duffified Experience Group”, a consulting firm with the realization that most of the smaller restaurant and bar operators that are out there needed someone who spoke their language & worked the way that they do. Through this firm, Duffy has been able to work and oversee restaurants, bars and nightclubs around the globe. The motto of “Redefining the economics of food service” has given Duffy and all of his clients a new lease on their business, and their lives. On and off camera, Chef Duffy works with restaurants across the country updating their menus, and coaching them through much needed business and organizational as well as food and drink face-lifts. His proven success has made him one of the most in-demand restaurant, and hospitality consultants across North America and overseas. Duffy is perhaps most recognized from his abundant television appearances on the wildly popular Spike TV series Bar Rescue, where he tours the country (sometimes on his Harley) reforming failing bars and restaurants with his “tell it like it is” style. He made his national on- camera debut on the Food Network series Date Plate and has appeared on countless segments on the DIY Network, HGTV, NBC, and Fine Living Networks. Chef Duffy is also a regular to the Food Network by being involved as a judge in the series Beat Bobby Flay and has appeared on The Today Show since 2006 as a recurring guest. Chef Duffy has his own line of signature spices, “Duffified Spice” as well as a line of t-Shirts, kitchen aprons, hats, and chef-driven hand soaps. Currently Duffy is the Culinary Director and Board member for “Bar and Restaurant Expo,” the world's largest nightlife show. Duffy is also lending his expertise to a new venture, “World Chef”, which is bringing hand curated meal kits and live cooking segments right to your home! He has also collaborated with Tampa based “Radio Influence” to create "Duffified Live" a talking & travel show with an over the top approach to eating, drinking, and experiences. When he isn't with clients, taping or traveling, he is working on his soon-to-be-released modern gastropub cookbook, or hanging out with his family and friends in the suburbs of Philadelphia. In episode 29 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering dyslexia amongst the photographic community, whether the expectation for writing to support photography is necessary, and where photographers are today with the moving image. Plus this week Grant re-visits a recorded conversation from 2011 with legendary photographer David Bailey. In this brief edited extract Bailey uses some strong language to deliver his thoughts on how people see him, the importance of cameras to photography, and the problems of achieving success early on in his career. As always with Bailey he doesn't mince his words! In 1959, Bailey became a photographic assistant at the John French studio, and in 1960, he was a contracted as a fashion photographer for British Vogue magazine. Along with Terence Donovan and Brian Duffy, Bailey captured and helped create the 'Swinging London' of the 1960s. The three photographers socialised with actors, musicians and royalty, and found themselves elevated to celebrity status, named by fellow photographer Norman Parkinson 'The Black Trinity'. 'Swinging London' was aptly reflected in his Box of Pin-Ups(1964): a box of poster-prints of 1960s celebrities including Terence Stamp, The Beatles, Mick Jagger, Jean Shrimpton, Cecil Beaton, Rudolf Nureyev, Andy Warhol and notorious East End gangsters, the Kray's. Strong objection to the presence of the Krays by fellow photographer, Lord Snowdon, was the major reason no American edition of the Box was released, and that a second British edition was not issued. Bailey's ascent at Vogue was meteoric and, at the height of his productivity, he shot 800 pages of Vogue editorial in one year. Since 1966, Bailey has also directed several television commercials and documentaries. From 1968 to 1971 he directed and produced TV documentaries titled Beaton, Warhol and Visconti. As well as fashion photography, Bailey photographed album sleeve art for musicians including The Rolling Stones. In 1976, Bailey co-published Ritz Newspaper. In 1985, he documented the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium. In 1995 he directed and wrote the South Bank Film The Lady is a Tramp featuring his wife Catherine Bailey. In 1998 he directed a documentary, Models Close Up, commissioned by Channel 4. In 2012, the BBC made a film of the story of his 1962 New York photoshoot with Jean Shrimpton, titled We'll Take Manhattan. He continues to work for a variety of editorial clients including Vogue and publish books of work from his archive and of new work. He does not have a website for his work. In episode 24 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott considers writing and photography. The use of captions and the provision of text to provide context on websites, in books and as part of a photographic exhibition, and the first steps to consider when looking to get commissioned. Plus this week legendary photographer Brian Duffy recalls making the iconic image of David Bowie and designing the iconic 1973 album cover Aladdin Sane as well as revealing the inspiration for Bowie's zig-zag make-up. This brief audio is extracted from a telephone conversation between Duffy and Grant Scott recorded shortly before Duffy's death in 2010. In 1955 Duffy began freelancing as a fashion artist for Harper's Bazaar magazine where he first came into contact with commercial photography. Inspired by the photographic contact sheets he saw passing through the art director's desk he sought a job as a photographers assistant, and was subsequently employed at Carlton studios and then at Cosmopolitan Artists. Duffy went on to work as an assistant to the photographer Adrian Flowers and whilst working for Flowers he received his first photographic commission for the The Sunday Times magazine. In 1957 Duffy was hired by British Vogue where he remained working until 1963. With fellow photographers; David Bailey and Terence Donovan, Duffy was a key player in the 'Black Trinity' as affectionately named by Norman Parkinson, who redefined not only the aesthetic of fashion photography but also the place of the photographer within the industry. Apart from Vogue, Duffy also worked for numerous publications including Glamour, Esquire, Town, Queen, The Observer, The Sunday Times and the Telegraph Magazine. Duffy was also a highly successful commercial advertising photographer. In 1968 he set up a film production company with Len Deighton and went on to produce the film adaptations of Deighton's book Only When I Larf (1967), and of the musical Oh! What a Lovely War. Duffy had an eight-year working relationship with David Bowie and shot five key sessions over this period providing the creative concept as well as the photographic image for three album covers, including the 1973 Aladdin Sane, 1979 Lodger and 1980 Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps). The story of his life and work is documented in a BBC documentary titled The Man Who Shot the 60's. Duffy died in May 2010, after suffering from the degenerative lung disease pulmonary fibrosis. www.duffyphotographer.com You can also access and subscribe to these podcasts at SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/unofphoto and on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/a-photographic-life/id1380344701 Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer in Professional Photography at the University of Gloucestershire, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Focal Press 2014) and The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Focal Press 2015).
