“The streaming bubble finally popped, and I think the tip of the spear that popped it was the double strikes we had last year and now we're calling it the great contraction. It's a really tough time for up-and-coming writers to break in. It's tough for everyone, even up-and-coming agents and managers, anyone coming out to Hollywood to pursue a career. It's one of the toughest times ever, so you need to be patient,” says literary manager Jeff Portnoy, of Bellevue Productions. On today's podcast, guest host Lee Jessup, Hollywood's leading screenwriting career coach and judge of the Big Break screenwriting competition, interviews Jeff Portnoy, literary manager for Bellevue Productions. They discuss the current state of the industry and how it's affecting writers. “We've been encouraging a lot of new writers to focus on features at the moment and explaining how bleak the TV staffing market is right now. So if they have hopes of getting staffed, it's very difficult right now. Typically, if we had a client who wants to write in the TV space, we'd help them get a TV agent and we, the agents and I, would go out and try to get them staffed. But agents aren't really signing anyone below mid level right now, so they're not taking on those up-and-coming writers,” says Portnoy. But there is hope considering business trends are always cyclical. Portnoy shares this advice about writing spec features in this climate: “You want to stand out and that comes down to your ideas. The execution has to be great. It's about choosing ideas that really stand out in a pack – the words I like to use are loud, bold, audacious. Managers, agents, producers – we see thousands of loglines a month and if we see a logline that's loud, audacious and bold, it's going to stand out.” To hear more about the state of the industry, listen to the podcast.

This week we sit down with John Zaozirny, a well-known lit manager and head of Bellevue productions. We discuss all things “prepping for a manager.” What samples do you need? What does John look for before signing a new writer? What does it mean to have a buzzy sample? If you're preparing to take your material out seeking representation, this episode is for you. JOHN ZAOZIRNY John runs Bellevue Productions, a leading literary management company with a focus on discovering and breaking new writers and writer-directors, in both the feature film and television spaces. John's clients' writing and directing credits include INFINITE, PARALLEL, ELI, BAD MATCH, BETTER WATCH OUT, HEAVY TRIP, OFFICE UPRISING, SPLINTER, amongst others. His clients have written feature scripts that are set up at Warner Bros, Paramount, 20th, Lionsgate, New Line, Sony, Universal, amongst others. As well, his clients have had 20 scripts on the last 6 Black Lists, the annual list of the best unproduced feature scripts. His client Elyse Hollander wrote BLONDE AMBITION, the number one script on the 2016 Black List, and his client Sophie Dawson wrote HEADHUNTER, the number one script on the 2020 Black List. His clients have also written on TV shows such as FBI INTERNATIONAL, SHANTARAM, SECRET INVASION, BOSCH PI, MR ROBOT, TRAINING DAY, TINY PRETTY THINGS, HAWAII FIVE-O, THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE and HAND OF GOD, amongst others. He also reps the writer of the Eisner nominated comic book LITTLE BIRD. John has produced feature films ALWAYS WATCHING, PARALLEL, ELI, and, most recently, INFINITE, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Mark Wahlberg and Chiwetel Ejiofor. On episode 90 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, Ryan is joined by both David O'Leary and Sean Jablonski, the creators and showrunner of Project Blue Book, the highly anticipated new television show on the History Channel. Project Blue Book is based on the true, top-secret investigations into Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and related phenomena conducted by the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1969. The investigations were headed by the noted astronomer, J. Allen Hynek. What prompted creator, David O'Leary to pen a script based on the life and career of J. Allen Hynek? What cases did he find most compelling to bring to the mainstream? And just exactly what is up with that alien in the tube that we keep seeing in many of the publicity photos? Next, Ryan speaks with co-writer and showrunner, Sean Jablonski. He runs us through the inception of the show, to casting, researching, and eventually producing and running the entire endeavor. O'Leary is represented by Paradigm and Zero Gravity Management. O’Leary currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Sean Jablonski is a graduate of New York University’s film program, breaking into the business as a staff writer on HBO’s highly acclaimed prison drama, OZ. After his stint with HBO, Jablonski created and produced the Showtime series, THE HOOP LIFE before going on to write and produce for LAW AND ORDER and Michael Mann’s CBS drama, ROBBERY HOMICIDE DIVISION. He then served as Executive Producer (and occasional director) on FX’s NIP/TUCK for its entire six season run before writing and executive producing the first season of USA’s hit legal drama SUITS.
