In this episode, I get to introduce you to Ben Calhoun. He is a music producer, mentor, and the lead singer for Citizen Way.He has worked with the Newsboys, Big Daddy Weave, and Jason Gray... but he will be the first to tell you that none of that is what motivates him to do what he does; he wants to point people to Christ through music but never get so caught up in the music business that he might lose sight of his primary motivation. After actively touring with the band for many years, Ben and his wife agreed that it was time to give up living out of a suitcase and get re-anchored at home to raise their 3 kids.Core VerseDo not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.–Romans 12:2Support the showQuestions or comments can be sent to steven@nookpodcast.comJoin The Nook Facebook page!Steven's Social Media:Instagram and TwitterCheck out some great Christian apparel: Pace Christian ClothingUse the promo code "STEVEM15" and save 15% on your order!

His mother was a professional musician, and his father was a pastor. He was enamored with music and loved God's work. He nurtured these interests as he grew up, joining band and starting a bible study at school. In college, Ben studied music. He truly enjoyed it and fell in love. However, he also wanted to share God's Word and make music for a purpose. Thus, he started Citizen Way and did music ministry.Over the years, Ben decided to be with his family at home. They chose to follow the five Fs: faith in Jesus, family, food, friends, and fun.[12:27] How Alison Got to Know JesusAlison came to know the Lord at through her friends at massage school. She saw the peace and joy her friend had in her faith.During a Bible study, she learned that being a Christian meant Jesus loved her personally. This changed the course of her life.Later on, Alison attended a private Bible college and met Ben. Everything followed when she started knowing Jesus.Ben and Alison went through a deep loss when Alison had a miscarriage. This tragic experience encouraged them to move. They were able to achieve all they had set out to do. They built their little kingdom despite all they've lost.[17:55] Sharing God's Word with FamilyBen and Alison have been married for almost 20 years with 2 teenagers and a 3-year-old toddler. After the traumatic miscarriage, Alison looked for a community to lean on when she should have been clinging to God's Word. Her children became her community. They had deep conversations and often talked about faith and spirituality.Homeschooling their children became a way to have these deep conversations. In the past, Alison was more self-focused. It was a big shift for her to focus on God's Word and the spiritual growth of their children.[24:44] Surrendering and Trusting GodAlison had a lot of fear and anxiety. The miscarriage helped her realize she was finding safety in the wrong places. She decided to try again and trust in God. No matter the outcome, she knew He would always walk with her.Alison [25:37]: “God isn't just good because good things happen in our lives. He's good regardless.”It's easier, more peaceful, and beneficial to surrender to God. Let go of the fear and trust that God will do the best thing for you.If the pregnancy didn't come through, then they trusted the Lord to make something great out of it.They pray that their baby grows up to love God's work and her family.[29:47] God ProvidesGod is the provider of all things. It's not just material things; He also provides the reasons and the story.Stop running around trying to figure out what to do with your life. You are part of God's plan. It's important to surround yourself with people who will redirect you to God's truth. You have two options in life: the way of life or the way of death. Using the gift of wisdom, make decisions that lead you to life.Reagan [35:43]: “Even though we go through really hard and traumatic things, when you find your way, and you find the truth tellers in your life, and you read the truth of God's word, it is literally the only thing that can sustain us.”[36:52] The Importance of Knowing God's WordNowadays, the Church often perpetuates a focus on self-help. God's Word should guide biblical counseling.Their eldest daughter had recently been going to self-focused Christian counseling. However, she started feeling better once she focused on God's Word. You can address the symptoms, but it's God's Word that gets you to the root cause. Otherwise, the cycle of deception continues. Those who know God find calm and peace.[44:09] Facing Spiritual Warfare with God's WordYou can be a Christian without knowing God's Word or following Jesus.Studying the Bible can make a difference in your life. A personal small Bible study can guide you and allow you to learn from people who may know more. When he was younger, Ben experienced spiritual warfare through nightmares. These prevented him from calling Jesus' name. This was spiritual warfare he could only address through spiritual powers. Understanding God's Word can give you this power.Listen to the full episode to find out what Ben and Alison share about spiritual warfare and the Bible.Ben [52:08]: “I think that's one of the things that's wonderful about God's Word. He will be faithful to help you figure that stuff out.”[01:01:22] Speaking with God through His WordStarting to study and understand the supernatural in the Bible can be intense.Studying God's Word can help you understand and identify what truly lines up with Him. It can also help you understand where you need to go in life.If you think God isn't speaking to you, remember that He has always spoken to you through His Word.Sometimes God can speak directly to you. Alison felt fear during her pregnancy, but she trusted God and heard Him speak to her.[01:06:36] Passing Faith to Your ChildrenIt's important to work together with your children.Try to be less distracted. Be available to talk with your kids whenever they want to talk about the spiritual. The distractions have to go. That's one of the reasons Ben and Alison homeschooled their children.Less is more. Less allows for more opportunities for the things that matter.Their children could see them engage with God's Word. They can talk about it with each other.[01:10:23] Advice from the CalhounsOne motto of another artist is faith, family, and freedom. Sticking to these simple things can guide you.Don't forget to give to God's work. Whenever the Calhouns have a big financial decision, they choose to give more and trust the Lord to work it out.Find something worth fighting for — it can bring you a lot of life.Alison operates with the end in mind. Invest in your own flesh and blood; they will receive your legacy.Be careful of power and influence. Instead, put your faith and family first.About Ben and AlisonBen and Alison Calhoun have been walking in music and ministry for a long time. Speaker: Pastor Matthew Walker Series: Galatians   There are, supposedly, two kinds of calamari (from the Italian for squid). One kind comes from a cephalopod, a marine animal that has tentacles. What you get at Olive Garden are basically fried squid rings (tasty!). On a 2014 episode of This American Life, host Ben Calhoun started a rumor that there is an artificial calamari that comes from pigs. As strange as that seems, another hoax was spread by Judaizers in the 1st century, falsely arguing that in order to be saved, one had to become a Jew first. Paul sets the record straight by explaining Faith is Better. (Gal. 3:1-14)

In this session, he’ll share a few strategies he’s hatched, many he’s stolen, and pass on some concrete tools for un-slumping your situation. Recorded at the 2016 Third Coast Conference. www.fullcirclemusic.orgHere is a new interview with Ben Calhoun (the lead singer of Citizen Way). He talks about his life and the journey his family have gone on. With an album that just came out, he mentioned the writing process that took place for it. The inspirations that came forth and the trust in God that he depended on.He offers some good advice about planning for success, being around a good team, and looking at opportunities as gaining experiences.Learning to love the process of songwriting is huge. Keeping the main focus on the main and leave the minor focus on the minors. Thinking too much could also damage the feeling and goal for a song. The post FCM017 – Songs About Your Story with Ben Calhoun appeared first on Full Circle Music. As you may have heard, General Admission is parting ways with WBEZ. The guys will continue the show in some form with a different network in March, but before that time, they wanted to celebrate their time with WBEZ: it's been real, as the kids say. On this episode, you'll be treated to clips from Tyler & Don's favorite interviews, on-locations adventures & a highlight reel of moments where they completely lost their minds. This is an episode for super-fans & people interested in finding out more about the show (READ: "other network" mentioned above!). And for those that are curious why the two are parting ways, Ben Calhoun, WBEZ's Director of Programming, had this to say about the split: “I really appreciate the passion and energy that’s gone into General Admission, and the affection the show’s earned from its audience. But we’ve had to face the reality that the show isn’t sustainable for us. And so we had to make a difficult decision to bring the partnership to a close. That said, as much as ever, we appreciate Tyler and Don – for their charm, talent, and endless enthusiasm for creative communities. They’re terrific. As I always am – I am excited for where they turn their passions next.”

How did a story about hog rectum and calamari on public radio capture the public’s attention and win a James Beard Award? Find out on a brand new episode of Eat Your Words, as host Talia Ralph is joined by Ben Calhoun, a producer for NPR’s This American Life, who contributed the story about hog rectum to the popular public radio show. He got a tip about a meat plant selling pig intestines as fake calamari, wondered if it could be true, and decided to investigate. Tune in as Ben explains how the story came to life and shares why he became so emotionally invested in the possibility of pork bung masquerading as seafood. This program was brought to you by Consider Bardwell Farm “I like finding all the paths to go down and chasing them all as far as they can possibly go.” [06:00] “Pricing in American food culture ends up obscuring so many other things that are happening with those foods.” [25:00] “The story appealed to different parts of my personality as a journalist and somebody who likes to make radio […] I love the idea of it. If you didn’t have to use the word rectum, it could be a children’s book.” [27:00] “If you eat calamari in the United States, I can’t guarantee anything but I’d bet everything I own that you’re not eating hog rectum […] eat your calamari with confidence!” [28:00] –Ben Calhoun on Eat Your Words

Ben Calhoun is a producer at This American Life. "The nature of covering politics is one where often people don’t want to say to you the things that they are feeling or thinking. ... You can create the diorama of that action in a way that you couldn’t if you weren’t willing to make them a character — founded on things that they said and beliefs that you know they have — than they’ve done for you on tape."

Ben Calhoun from Citzen Way talked to me about the band's new CD, Love Is The Evidence". Their first single was "Should've Been Me and their second single is "Nothing Better Could Separate Us". Ben's band is a band of brothers, two sets of them to be exact. Benn grew up a PK, Preacher's Kid, he found His sweetheart (well, God actually orchestrated it), and he writes songs that touch a listener's heart. Ben Calhoun is the lead singer of Citizen Way. He reminds me of a mix of a carnival barker, circus showman, rock star, and decent human being. Plus, at the end of the podcast, a big announcement (for me at least) about an upcoming podcast episode.
