In this episode, I get to introduce you to Ben Calhoun. He is a music producer, mentor, and the lead singer for Citizen Way.He has worked with the Newsboys, Big Daddy Weave, and Jason Gray... but he will be the first to tell you that none of that is what motivates him to do what he does; he wants to point people to Christ through music but never get so caught up in the music business that he might lose sight of his primary motivation. After actively touring with the band for many years, Ben and his wife agreed that it was time to give up living out of a suitcase and get re-anchored at home to raise their 3 kids.Core VerseDo not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.–Romans 12:2Support the showQuestions or comments can be sent to steven@nookpodcast.comJoin The Nook Facebook page!Steven's Social Media:Instagram and TwitterCheck out some great Christian apparel: Pace Christian ClothingUse the promo code "STEVEM15" and save 15% on your order!

His mother was a professional musician, and his father was a pastor. He was enamored with music and loved God's work. He nurtured these interests as he grew up, joining band and starting a bible study at school. In college, Ben studied music. He truly enjoyed it and fell in love. However, he also wanted to share God's Word and make music for a purpose. Thus, he started Citizen Way and did music ministry.Over the years, Ben decided to be with his family at home. They chose to follow the five Fs: faith in Jesus, family, food, friends, and fun.[12:27] How Alison Got to Know JesusAlison came to know the Lord at through her friends at massage school. She saw the peace and joy her friend had in her faith.During a Bible study, she learned that being a Christian meant Jesus loved her personally. This changed the course of her life.Later on, Alison attended a private Bible college and met Ben. Everything followed when she started knowing Jesus.Ben and Alison went through a deep loss when Alison had a miscarriage. This tragic experience encouraged them to move. They were able to achieve all they had set out to do. They built their little kingdom despite all they've lost.[17:55] Sharing God's Word with FamilyBen and Alison have been married for almost 20 years with 2 teenagers and a 3-year-old toddler. After the traumatic miscarriage, Alison looked for a community to lean on when she should have been clinging to God's Word. Her children became her community. They had deep conversations and often talked about faith and spirituality.Homeschooling their children became a way to have these deep conversations. In the past, Alison was more self-focused. It was a big shift for her to focus on God's Word and the spiritual growth of their children.[24:44] Surrendering and Trusting GodAlison had a lot of fear and anxiety. The miscarriage helped her realize she was finding safety in the wrong places. She decided to try again and trust in God. No matter the outcome, she knew He would always walk with her.Alison [25:37]: “God isn't just good because good things happen in our lives. He's good regardless.”It's easier, more peaceful, and beneficial to surrender to God. Let go of the fear and trust that God will do the best thing for you.If the pregnancy didn't come through, then they trusted the Lord to make something great out of it.They pray that their baby grows up to love God's work and her family.[29:47] God ProvidesGod is the provider of all things. It's not just material things; He also provides the reasons and the story.Stop running around trying to figure out what to do with your life. You are part of God's plan. It's important to surround yourself with people who will redirect you to God's truth. You have two options in life: the way of life or the way of death. Using the gift of wisdom, make decisions that lead you to life.Reagan [35:43]: “Even though we go through really hard and traumatic things, when you find your way, and you find the truth tellers in your life, and you read the truth of God's word, it is literally the only thing that can sustain us.”[36:52] The Importance of Knowing God's WordNowadays, the Church often perpetuates a focus on self-help. God's Word should guide biblical counseling.Their eldest daughter had recently been going to self-focused Christian counseling. However, she started feeling better once she focused on God's Word. You can address the symptoms, but it's God's Word that gets you to the root cause. Otherwise, the cycle of deception continues. Those who know God find calm and peace.[44:09] Facing Spiritual Warfare with God's WordYou can be a Christian without knowing God's Word or following Jesus.Studying the Bible can make a difference in your life. A personal small Bible study can guide you and allow you to learn from people who may know more. When he was younger, Ben experienced spiritual warfare through nightmares. These prevented him from calling Jesus' name. This was spiritual warfare he could only address through spiritual powers. Understanding God's Word can give you this power.Listen to the full episode to find out what Ben and Alison share about spiritual warfare and the Bible.Ben [52:08]: “I think that's one of the things that's wonderful about God's Word. He will be faithful to help you figure that stuff out.”[01:01:22] Speaking with God through His WordStarting to study and understand the supernatural in the Bible can be intense.Studying God's Word can help you understand and identify what truly lines up with Him. It can also help you understand where you need to go in life.If you think God isn't speaking to you, remember that He has always spoken to you through His Word.Sometimes God can speak directly to you. Alison felt fear during her pregnancy, but she trusted God and heard Him speak to her.[01:06:36] Passing Faith to Your ChildrenIt's important to work together with your children.Try to be less distracted. Be available to talk with your kids whenever they want to talk about the spiritual. The distractions have to go. That's one of the reasons Ben and Alison homeschooled their children.Less is more. Less allows for more opportunities for the things that matter.Their children could see them engage with God's Word. They can talk about it with each other.[01:10:23] Advice from the CalhounsOne motto of another artist is faith, family, and freedom. Sticking to these simple things can guide you.Don't forget to give to God's work. Whenever the Calhouns have a big financial decision, they choose to give more and trust the Lord to work it out.Find something worth fighting for — it can bring you a lot of life.Alison operates with the end in mind. Invest in your own flesh and blood; they will receive your legacy.Be careful of power and influence. Instead, put your faith and family first.About Ben and AlisonBen and Alison Calhoun have been walking in music and ministry for a long time. They've been married for almost 20 years and are raising four wonderful children in faith. They're not afraid to have deep conversations with others about God's Word.Ben founded Citizen Way with three other artists in 2004. Now, he is the sole member and continues to make contemporary Christian music with a purpose. Today on Karl and Crew Mornings, we concluded our weekly theme called The Prayers God Answers. We discussed why our prayers can seem to go nowhere. This is especially evident when we are not truly in God's will as a surrendered believer in Jesus Christ. The scripture reference was John 9:31. Karl offered a special blog for this week called, "Why Your Prayers Go Nowhere". For Freedom Friday, we asked listeners to share a time that they first prayed to God in full surrender and true belief. Our guests included Jim Strietelmeier (founder of Neighborhood Fellowship Church in Indy) and Ben Calhoun (lead singer and founder of Citizen Way). Next week is Fall SHARE 2020, and if you'd like to join our Karl and Crew Prayer Warrior Team, you can sign-up for 30 minute shifts. Finally, take a listen to the Karl and Crew Showcast to hear the highlights from today.

For some the idea of worship conjures up images of raised hands, a great guitar riff or maybe an old, out-of-tune organ cranking out some of the great hymns of the faith. But, as we will see in this week's episode, worship is not limited to a style of music but also describes a life lived in response to the greatness of God. This week's guest is Josh Calhoun, the Student Ministry Director at Central Christian Church in Beloit, WI. Yet, if you are familiar with Josh, it is probably because he is a member of the Christian band Citizen Way. I know I say this every week, but you won't want to miss this episode. I had a ton of fun chatting with Josh and I know it will be worth your time to listen. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Made It In Music: Interviews With Artists, Songwriters, And Music Industry Pros
www.fullcirclemusic.orgHere is a new interview with Ben Calhoun (the lead singer of Citizen Way). He talks about his life and the journey his family have gone on. With an album that just came out, he mentioned the writing process that took place for it. The inspirations that came forth and the trust in God that he depended on.He offers some good advice about planning for success, being around a good team, and looking at opportunities as gaining experiences.Learning to love the process of songwriting is huge. Keeping the main focus on the main and leave the minor focus on the minors. Thinking too much could also damage the feeling and goal for a song. The post FCM017 – Songs About Your Story with Ben Calhoun appeared first on Full Circle Music. More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music
Do you remember the last conversation you had with a loved one who is no longer with you? Well, Jesus' words at the Last Supper were memorable and important enough to be carefully recorded by John and gives us our Scriptural challenge this week. "Evidence" by Citizen Way reminds me of Jesus' new command to his disciples every time I hear it. I hope you are as challenged by the words of Jesus during this last meal with His best friends as I am. On this week's episode I discuss: My goal to keep an eye out for references to "love" in my Bible Read Through this year Citizen Way's YouTube video discussing the inspiration behind the song Citizen Way's inspiration - 1 John 4:19 Paul's challenge to continue to love and to love even more - 1 Thessalonians 4:9-10 The Bible interaction tool of lining your OWN life up with Scripture...this journey is your own Jesus' new command to love - John 13:34 The importance (and delight) of context Jesus' promise that we will be filled with His joy - John 15:11-12 It is a sin NOT to obey commands we know to do - James 4:5, 11, 17 Love is the EVIDENCE of Jesus in our lives...this is the reason for Jesus' new command - John 13:35 Additional Resources Lyrics Citizen Way's "Evidence - Behind the Music" Keith Moore's Sermon The Love Command - Preferring Your Brother Radical Together - A Humbling Start to a New Year - David Platt The Bible Read Through I am participating in with Keith Ferrin This Week's Challenge Spend some time in John 13-17. These are the chapters that hold the words of Jesus during the Last Supper where He gave this new command. Also, make it a priority to commit to infusing your life with God's Word every day this year...through Bible reading, study, listening to the Word...use it all, but commit for God's glory today!

Citizen Way's song, "How Sweet the Sound", points us straight to Zephaniah 3:17 where we find that God sings over us! I knew we should sing songs of worship over Him, but that He sings over us is mind blowing! The song also points us to Psalm 23 and you can choose from two different challenges this week to get you into God Word.

Citizen Way's song, "Nothing Ever (Could Separate Us) comes straight from Romans 8:38. The context around this verse is where we will unpack the profound truth that "nothing can separate us from God's love" to our minds, and give God the best chance to persuade our hearts.
Ben Calhoun from Citzen Way talked to me about the band's new CD, Love Is The Evidence". Their first single was "Should've Been Me and their second single is "Nothing Better Could Separate Us". Ben's band is a band of brothers, two sets of them to be exact. Benn grew up a PK, Preacher's Kid, he found His sweetheart (well, God actually orchestrated it), and he writes songs that touch a listener's heart. Ben Calhoun is the lead singer of Citizen Way. He reminds me of a mix of a carnival barker, circus showman, rock star, and decent human being. Plus, at the end of the podcast, a big announcement (for me at least) about an upcoming podcast episode.
Looking back on 2018, my first podcast experience, I like it so much that I started another one featuring sports called “Sports Yak”. Episode 39 of “What Else?” features highlights from this past year including Mac Powell, Matt Maher, Citizen Way, Radio Icon Kevin Matthews, Sanctus Real, We Are Messengers, and up-and-comers Apollo LTD. Happy New Year!
