Riding Shotgun With Charlie #193 Lenny Magill The GLOCK Store I've known about Lenny Magill probably since I started getting gun catalogs in the mail. I even have a VHS, yes VHS!, tape that he did back in 1993! Before I learned about the other instructors, I knew about Lenny Magill. Lenny now owns The GLOCK Store. But he started out selling advertisements on radio and tv. Back in 1893, he did some commercials and ads for a San Diego area gun store and instructor. The ads did well and lead to some other things. The more he got into firearms, the more he wanted to get involved. Lenny heard about the newly formed ESPN. Yes, there was a day when ESPN was new. The sports channel was looking for more content. Lenny found out that they only wanted $10,000 to run a half hour show. The Bianchi Cup was in southern California and Lenny approached John Bianchi and asked if he could film the competition then put it on ESPN. Bianchi liked the idea, but didn't have a budget for something like that. The deal they made was that Lenny could film the competition but he wanted the rights to the film. Bianchi agreed. At the games, Bianchi had Lenny pitch the idea for advertisers for the sponsors for a one-minute on the video to help fund the video. They all agreed and chipped in. Meanwhile, Lenny's filming team went and made flyers to hand out at the competition. Everyone wanted the film and he found 300 orders for the full 90 video. He also had the 24 minute show for ESPN. Soon after, Lenny was filming several other competitions around the country. After nearly 10 years of these videos, he decided to get in front of the camera to show people how to take down this new people everyone was raving about, the GLOCK. After making several more videos on GLOCKs and helping people with competitive shooting, he decided that he was going to start GunVideos. The catalog, which many of us used to get, featured over 150 different videos. As time passed, he opened The GLOCK Store in San Diego, getting pieces and parts for the striker fired pistol and also doing videos on installing and using these new parts. The GLOCK Store started producing their own parts which may be sturdier than some original parts. Besides parts, he also did more shooting and testing of their parts. Which led to other people wanting to shoot at his facility. Eventually, they opened a shooting range for everyone to have access to use. After being in San Diego, Lenny's wife had the idea to leave southern California and find somewhere new. Searching all around the country, they settled on Nashville, Tenn. The move started with building a new facility and getting that opened around 2018. They built an amazing and big facility, around 75,000 square feet. They make, install, fix, and repair all their parts there. Cerakoting and some other work gets sent out, but they've installed several thousand red dots for their customers. The GLOCK Store is going as strong as ever and doesn't have any signs of letting up. Before the show, Lenny took me around the facility. I got to see the storefront, of course. But I also went through where they manufacture their parts, do all the installing and upgrading, and where Lenny has the “corner office”. The GLOCK Store is only 2 miles from the airport in Nashville. So when you're in town and waiting for a flight, you should stop by and pick up some new parts for your GLOCK. And tell Lenny “Hello”! Favorite quotes: “I'll do the show, as long as I get to own it.” “At the end of the deal, I got the $30,000. Everybody committed.” “I think I can also do some instructional videos…” “The challenge with the lane is that you'll end up shooting in one direction and that'll be your skill level.” Lenny Magill Instagram https://www.instagram.com/lennymagill GLOCK Store YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@glockstore GLOCK Store https://www.glockstore.com/ GunVideo Website https://gunvideo.com/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. In this podcast, we talk with CMP pistol coordinator Jim Henderson, who gives us a look into CMP's new Bianchi Cup action pistol event. The match is already established in the action pistol world, having been around since 1979, but, in 2023, the CMP takes over to enhance the event for experienced competitors as well as to expand its outreach to new ones. It's uncharted territory for the CMP and an exciting update to the competition lineup!

Riding Shotgun With Charlie #126 Jeanelle Westrom Davenport Guns The DC Project Janelle Westrom is someone who's name I've been hearing for a while. She's a friend of other friends, and that's almost family in the gun community. Family is what the gun community is about. I reached out to Jeanelle and asked if she'd be up for being a passenger. I was heading to Sioux Falls for a class and I was going to be ‘swinging through' the Davenport area and I could film a show with her. We met at Davenport Guns and Jeanelle brings me in where she spent the day before shooting Gel Blasters (https://gelblaster.com/) at some friends driving in their cars. There were a few Gel Blasters in the store and she proceeded to shoot them a bit. I knew this was going to be fun. Jeanelle's grandpa was a gunsmith, her dad was a gun guy, and she was born with Hoppe's in her bloodstream. Her dad took and her sisters to the range because he needed ‘brass rats' to pick up the brass so he could reload. He spent time in the military and took a job at Rock Island Arsenal, where much of the military firearms went through and it's where the Army does weapon development. With many connections through her father, she was able to build Davenport Guns and their range. Eventually, her father made connections to engineers at Armalite. Yes, THAT Armalite. And he ended up purchasing the drawing for the rifle in 1994. After having the plans for 20 years, he sold the company and did quite well for himself. To keep himself busy, he does the internet sales for Davenport Guns. Jeanelle started competitive shooting at the Bianchi Cup hanging out with many famous shooters like Jerry Miculek and Bruce Piatt. She made connections from all over the world including Spain, Germany, and Australia during competitive shooting. While doing HR for a company in Georgia, she found herself at a crossroad at work. But when her dad called and asked if she wanted to open a gun store, he needed an answer in three hours. After not opening that business, Jeanelle already had the paperwork going for an FFL and she decided to go ahead with the plans anyway. That's how Davenport Guns got started. The range hosts several training courses as Jeanelle believes that a store that sells guns should also make sure their clients can shoot a gun. She also has over 400 women in her A Girl & A Gun club! In the advertising for the store, Jeanelle shoots. That alone has inspired several women to buy a firearm and get some training. Jeanelle is also involved with The DC Project. While she lives in a very gun friendly state, she's going to DC to help other women talk to their politicians. And her senators help Holly Sullivan (RSWC #036 ) & Brooke Cheney (RSWC #075) on talking with Governor Murphy in Connecticut. Some of her DC Project success stories bring politicians from crossed arms to hugs when she left. Jeanelle has so many great stories and they're all really funny. I'm sure you'll enjoy them as much as I did. Between her father, Jerry Miculek, and the pistol teams from around the world, she's having a lot of fun. There are people that are squeezing the maximum yield out of life. Jeanelle is one of them. She's on the go, doing something, and keeping very, very busy. And she's having fun along the way. Favorite quotes “I've been very, very blessed in my life to be surrounded by phenomenal people who are willing to teach me stuff.” “Anything you hand me I can shoot fairly well.” “Life is too short to not have fun. You've gotta have fun.” “It doesn't make sense to me to sell somebody their first gun and not have the ability to teach them to be safe with it.” “If I tell you I want you to practice, I don't want to make it cost prohibitive to do so.” “Don't mess with this girl, she cray.” Davenport Guns https://davenportguns.com/ Davenport Guns A Girl & A Gun Club https://davenportguns.com/a-girl-a-gun/ Davenport Guns Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Davenportshootingclub Davenport Guns Instagram https://www.facebook.com/Davenportshootingclub The DC Project https://www.dcproject.info/ Second Amendment Foundation http://saf.org/ Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. Brian Enos is considered to be one of most critical thinkers in the realm of handgun shooting. In 1990 he wrote the book (link below) "Practical Shooting: Beyond Fundamentals" which is the collection of over ten years of notes and ideas Brian had regarding pistol shooting and competition. Brian was raised in Ohio but moved to Arizona to work at the State Prison where he first learned about shooting competitions. Soon the bug of shooting hit him and he shot a PPC (Police Practical Combat) match and then he quickly moved to IPSC competitions. At his first match he met Rob Leatham and they became friends and training partners. The two dominated the local and state matches and then they went national shooting Steel Challenge. Brian's journey continued and he realized he enjoyed a different kind of match such as the Bianchi Cup, The Masters and the Sportsman's Team Challenge. He won the Bianchi Cup in 1983 and 1984 and the Masters in 1989 plus he was a five time member of the Sportsman's Team Challenge National championship. He also qualified for the US Gold Team for IPSC multiple years. Brian was a sponsored shooter for many years but in 1991 he left his sponsors and Bianchi Cup matches for the new USPSA and it's new Limited Division. He shot USPSA and Steel Challenge until 2000 and then won multiple Area and National championships. In the year 2000 he retired from competition and built a website and forum (Enos Forum) which is the largest competitive shooting forum on the internet. Brian also developed a gun lubricant "Slide-Glide" which has the ability to stay on parts and protect firearms from wear and corrosion. It also softens felt recoil in pistols. A month or so ago I was at the indoor shooting range, and there was a legit bullseye shooter in the lane next to me. I ran my target out next to his (25y), and tried to best his groups. The best I could muster were groups about double the size of his, and I was shooting with both hands, and he was only using one. Ever since then I've been thinking that I could probably learn a thing or two from shooting a few Bullseye matches. The idea of being absolutely, crazily, laser accurate with a pistol is very interesting to me. While looking into the more accuracy based competitions, I came across this old episode of the Power Factor Show with Caleb Giddings talking about Bianchi Cup. I've always kind of rolled my eyes at it as an "action" type shooter, but more and more I think it could be good for me to try something that's more accuracy based. If you're an action type shooter that's shot a few Bullseye matches, I'd be interested to hear if you had any takeaways from it. The News The North Marianias Islands had their handgun ban repealed just a week or so ago by a Federal judge, and now in response their House and Senate have passed a bill that will add a $1000 tax onto the price of any handgun sold there. What a joke, this is an obvious infringement. Guns.com has more on it here. Here's the text of the bill (.pdf). The NC Department of Agriculture has released their report on the feasability of having a place to store guns at the gate of the NC State Fair. As expected, they said it was a bad idea. Here's episode 103 of the podcast where Ben and I break down the whole situation as it was unfolding 2 years ago. Here's the report that the NCDA released. It's in plain text, and only about 8 pages, I'd recommend reading it. Gear that Doesn't Suck I love my Spyderco Delica 4 with the Wave opener. It's just a fantastic knife that I've been carrying for about 5 years now. There was a time when I got frustrated with getting the VG-10 steel good and sharp, but once I learned a good technique, it's just been fantastic. The Wave feature is what really sets the knife apart. It makes it one hand opening without having using any springs or anything like an assisted opening knife which can have dubious legality in some places. Dryfire Drill of the Week: A new shooter on the IDPA Facebook group asked about ow to practice shooting from cover after getting a lot of cover calls at his first IDPA match. It's pretty simple really, set up some type of barricade in your dryfire dojo, and then film yourself with your phone engaging the targets from behind the cover of the barricade. You can then review the video you make sure you're keeping the appropriate amount of your body behind cover. Contact If you've got a question or comment about the show, hit the comments below, or send me an email at luke@triangletactical.net.
