Recognised as a single living entity, the Birrarung (Yarra River) has shaped and formed the landscape over millennia, unifying this landscape that we all live within. Our river lives, breathes and supports the life of the community. In return, its life has been supported by the custodianship of Traditional Owners for thousands of generations. The Birrarung is more than just water. It is the layers in the landscape that the river has formed, the soils, the trees, the plants, and the animals. It is the cultural connections, stories and layers of history that live within this landscape. It is the new stories and layers that unfold as we flow like the river through time. The land belongs to the Birrarung. From the upper reaches of the catchment, passing through forests and farmlands, to residential and industrial areas, and finally entering the bay. A landscape and waterway brimming with life from source to sea. Tune in to Alexandra Lee (Birrarung Council member) with Birrarung Council Elders including Uncle Dave Wandin (Birrarung Council member and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elder), and our Birrarung Design Studio leads Sarah Lynn Rees (Monash Uni) and Jock Gilbert (RMIT), as they explored the concept of the Great Birrarung Parkland and discuss our shared responsibility and ideas on how we can change the way we view and value our river and its lands, the Birrarung.

One of Victoria's most iconic rivers, the Birrarung (also known as the Yarra River), is a site of beauty and contradiction. The river is a vital water source for surrounding ecosystems, a reminder of what some of Melbourne looked like pre-colonisation, and a place of respite for many people living in the city. Pollution and neglect has left its environmental health under threat, with 18 out of 25 environmental health indicators rating poorly in the latest State of the Yarra Report. Jacob speaks with Rob Hyatt (Koorie Heritage Trust), Jack Norris (historian and archaelogist), and Charlotte Sterrett (Yarra Riverkeeper) about the river's cultural, historical, and ecological significance as well as the challenges that lie ahead in the river's management. Earth Matters #1372 was produced by Jacob Gamble.

The past, potential and perils of swimming in urban rivers. After quite a long dormancy period, in this episode of This Must Be The Place Liz has a follow-up discussion with a researcher she met recently while speaking at an MPavilion event (“Time Travel: Can Inspiration from our past save our holiday future?”). Loretta Bellato is a PhD researcher based in the Swinburne Centre for Urban Transitions, whose work crosses over with some of the topic Liz spoke about at MPavillion – particularly the historical origins of Victoria's imperilled public swimming pools in river enclosures/river pools. Loretta's research is focused on the potential of regenerative tourism, including a case study of efforts to regenerate the Birrarung (Yarra River) into, amongst other goals, a swimmable urban river. Relatively few people now would brave Melbourne's brown “upside down” river – at least not in its lower urban reaches – but in this episode we hear about some of the people who are working to make the Birrarung swimmable; and about people who already swim in it including at the longstanding swimming hole Deep Rock. The discussion ranges from pollution and perception; what regeneration and regenerative tourism mean; transitions theory; ‘Wild Swimming' and the UK's legal history; other examples of urban rivers being made swimmable again; Melbourne's river pool locations of the 20th century; and the demise of river pools - many of which were diverted into/replaced by the concrete post-war Olympic pools that are themselves now fast becoming obsolete. Liz has spiels about the role of health regulations, insurance, signage and fences as applied to open water swimming locations. Featuring Deep Rock, Warburton, the Thames, Copenhagen, Hepburn Pool, Kyneton, Shepparton, the Campaspe, Buchan Caves pool, and Bondi's poopy past amongst other stories. If you're interested in participating in Loretta's PhD research, she can be contacted at lbellato@swin.edu.au . The song ‘Swimmers” by Taylor Project is stuck on the end for good measure.

This episode featuring Tony Birch is part of Six Walks an audio walking tour series commissioned by ACCA – Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Find bio, access notes, images and further information here: https://acca.melbourne/six-walks-episode-one-tony-birch/ ABOUT THIS EPISODE: Tony Birch’s walk, along a section of the Birrarung (Yarra) river from the Children’s Farm at Collingwood to the Fairfield ‘pipe-bridge’ and surrounding country, is located on the land of the Wurundjeri People of the greater Kulin Nation. Each time we walk we consider the privilege of being on Wurundjeri land and pay respect not only to their Elders – past, present and emerging – but all of their people. The Birrarung River is an ancient waterway. It precedes the birth of what we know today as Port Phillip Bay by tens of thousands of years. Prior to the formation of Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait, during the end of the Ice Age, the Birrarung flowed across a land mass known as the Bassian Plains, that joined what we know today as Victoria and Tasmania. The ancient Birrarung eventually flowed into the Southern Ocean. While the contemporary Birrarung River has changed significantly over thousands of years, we know that the original bed of the Ice Age river remains, and can be located around 100 metres below Port Phillip Bay at the heads of the bay. The significance of this geological, cultural and spiritual reality should not be lost on us as we walk by the river today. We are sharing a story of both the past and the present, enmeshed in the country beneath our feet. Tony Birch is an award winning author. He is a frequent contributor to ABC local and national radio, a regular guest at writers’ festivals, and a climate justice campaigner. Read the full bio via the link above. Curators: Annika Kristensen and Miriam Kelly Audio technician: Simon Cotter ABOUT THE SERIES: Six Walks has been conceived to be ideally listened to in situ, with headphones on a personal mobile device. Maps, directions and access notes are available with each walk to assist with orientation. ACCA reminds participants to be aware of their surroundings and to adhere to road safety guidelines at all times. Please note that when undertaking a walk, participants must assume personal responsibility for any liability, injury, loss, or damage in any way connected with their experience of Six Walks. Swimming, floating, playing in the Yarra River (Birrarung)? Nope, we’re not joking—currently in Melbourne, a number of community-led projects are working hard to activate the Yarra’s inner-city reaches. Though each of the projects are different, they all have one aim in common: to restore the river so it can be used for on- and in-water activities that can a) benefit health and wellbeing, b) drive investment to green infrastructure, and c) attract more people to our beautiful, vibrant city. These projects, along with recent Victorian Government initiatives to improve protection of the Yarra (Birrarung), present a special opportunity to think about what’s next for the river. Led by YarraPools—the team behind the proposal to construct a permanent swimming pool in the Yarra in Melbourne’s CBD—in conjunction with the Inflatable Regatta, the Yarra River Keeper, CoCreate Cremorne and the North Wharf wetlands proposal, this workshop and discussion explored community views of the Yarra.
