In this episode of Educator Yarns, Jess Staines speaks with Linda Wilson, a dedicated early childhood teacher at Sentia Early Learning in Melbourne CBD. Originally from Sweden, Linda shares how her childhood experiences exploring Swedish forests shaped her deep appreciation for nature as a teacher and guide. Now living and working on Wurundjeri Country, Linda beautifully intertwines her background in Nordic Forest pedagogy with Aboriginal perspectives in her teaching practice. Despite being based in Melbourne's urban centre, Linda has led her kindergarten children on more than 30 excursions to connect with Country, learn about local Aboriginal history, and develop meaningful relationships with the land. Her approach demonstrates how educators can follow children's natural curiosity to explore Aboriginal perspectives, even in city-based settings. Linda's journey from knowing very little about Aboriginal culture upon arriving in Australia to embedding it meaningfully in her practice offers valuable insights for educators seeking to deepen their understanding and approach to cultural connections. Key Takeaways: The Swedish approach to early childhood education emphasises consistent time in nature, with some kindergartens located entirely outdoors where children cook on open fires and engage with natural resources. Revisiting the same natural spaces repeatedly is crucial for deepening children's connection and learning, allowing them to move beyond initial excitement to more meaningful engagement. Linda's personal experience of spending days exploring Swedish forests as a child shaped her teaching philosophy and her belief that nature can provide a grounding, calming influence in our fast-paced society. Children's questions about their local environment (like "Who made the Yarra River?" and "Where does it flow?") can serve as powerful starting points for exploring Aboriginal perspectives and connections to Country. The Aboriginal 8 Ways of Learning framework, particularly the 'land links' approach, provides a valuable structure for educators wanting to connect teaching through culture rather than just about culture. Each year, Linda's program focuses on different aspects of Country based on the children's interests—from the Yarra River's history to food sources at Birrarung Marr to land caring at Port Phillip Bay. Despite challenges in maintaining ongoing relationships with local Aboriginal communities in urban settings, educators can access ethical resources like the mapping tool developed by Melbourne Council in collaboration with Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples. Children in urban settings can develop meaningful connections to Country through regular excursions that help them recognise the Aboriginal history and significance of familiar places. There is a natural synergy between nature-based pedagogies (like the Swedish forest school approach) and Aboriginal perspectives on connection to land that educators can draw upon in their practice. Stories such as that of Bunjil the Eagle become powerful tools for children to understand Creation stories and develop respect for Traditional Owners, even when learning occurs primarily in urban environments. Linda Wilson's journey from the forests of Sweden to teaching on Wurundjeri Country demonstrates how educators can weave together different cultural approaches to nature-based learning. By following children's natural curiosity, revisiting significant places, and drawing on ethical resources, educators can foster meaningful connections to Country even in urban settings. As you reflect on your own practice, consider how you might incorporate regular experiences on Country that allow children to develop deeper relationships with the land and greater understanding of Aboriginal perspectives. How might you use mapping tools and local resources to enhance your knowledge and confidence in embedding Aboriginal perspectives in your program? Access the episode resources here.

Do you feel safe to walk around your neighbourhood in the dark?I don't. And I have a feeling it's not just me.It's ridonkulous that in this day and age, a woman doesn't feel safe to go for a walk on her own! It's a very real problem - I wish I had an answer, but I don't. So the least I can do is share my personal experience to shed some light on the issue. At the start of the year, I set a goal to up my steps to 20,000 steps a day. That's a lot of steps! To make that happen, it meant waking up at 5 am. Do you know how dark it is at 5 am?! It's dark. And I don't feel safe. One afternoon, my friend Mary was in town for a short visit and we decided to take a stroll along the Yarra River. It was around five in the afternoon, and everything was lovely until we witnessed two gangs of teens going really hard at each other. I was paralysed with fear. I wanted to help but fortunately, Mary pulled me away. It was clear that these kids were high on drugs, and any attempt to intervene would have ended badly, especially considering I'm only five foot two!So, I had to think hard about how I was going to feel safe while on my 5 am walks. If you're feeling unsettled like I am, maybe these ideas will help you too.I went out and bought a bright yellow rain jacket. You can't miss me!I walk with my dog—a 15-year-old Maltese who, let's be honest, wouldn't scare anyone off, but his presence is comforting. I bought myself a big torch - a really heavy one. Even though I don't think I'd have the guts to bop someone on the head with it, it gives me a little comfort.I also bought a personal alarm that I carry with me. After about four weeks of solo early morning walks, my husband, Mark asked to come with me. Seeing how dark it was at 5 am, he asked me if I felt safe and of course, I said “No!” So now he comes with me every day and that makes me feel very safe. He's an amazing husband. But not everyone has a partner to go with them. This is a very real problem, and I wish I had a clear solution. I'm increasingly curious about what other women are doing to feel safe. If you're experiencing similar feelings of unease, please know you're not alone. At the end of the day, I'm not going to let fear get in the way of me getting out and doing what I need to do. Don't let fear get in your way either.LINKS:Day with the QueenWebsiteFor a copy of Emma's book, 'Go-getter: Raise your mojo, shift your mindset and thrive' – https://www.emmamcqueen.com.au/book/

Video Version: https://youtu.be/08GBv_Jd3ckMelbourne's history is deeply intertwined with its water management. Starting as a small village on the Yarra River's banks, it rapidly grew during the Victorian gold rush, leading to increased water demand. To address this, the city built the world's largest artificial reservoir in 1857, signifying its commitment to resolving water issues. However, the Millennium Drought in the early 21st century was a stark reminder of Melbourne's water vulnerability. This led to the Victorian Desalination Plant project by AquaSure, comprising Thiess, Macquarie Capital, and Suez Environnement. Despite its ambitious goals, the plant faced construction delays and financial setbacks, and remained largely unused post-completion due to sufficient rainfall. Melbourne's water strategy is unique, with annual assessments to determine the need for desalinated water and a focus on water reuse and sustainability. Although the plant has been underutilized, it's an essential part of the city's long-term water security plan, as climate change continues to pose challenges. The city's proactive and adaptive approach serves as a model for urban water management. Despite being built to address water scarcity, the Victorian Desalination Plant didn't produce water for several years due to adequate rainfall. This shows how weather can dramatically change the need for certain infrastructure. Melbourne orders desalinated water annually, based on forecasts rather than immediate need. This approach differs from the typical on-demand operation of desalination plants worldwide. Paying for the desalination plant's standby costs, even when not in use, highlights a long-term commitment to water security, emphasizing preparation over immediate utility. #Desalination #Melbourne #WaterScarcity

In this episode of "From the Yarra River the Mediterranean Sea", we interview Israeli map designer and peace builder Mushon Zer Aviv. We first came across Mushon after reading a powerful article he wrote called “Your Empty is Killing us” which explores the importance of holding space for YES AND statements during this war.In the second half of the episode, we have a discussion between ourselves about what it means to be connected to land and the links we have seen between Palestinians, Israelis and Australia's First Peoples. We also discuss the Australian Left and how we feel their advocacy has been, at times, somewhat one-sided. In what has been a particularly tragic week for both Israelis and Palestinians, we hope this conversation again gives our listeners hope that another way is possible.
Welcome back to From the Yarra River to the Mediterranean Sea.This is the first of a two part episode where we deep dive into the history of Israel/Palestine.In part 1, we discuss:why we were only taught one half of the Israeli/Palestinian narrative at our Jewish day schools and the impact that has had on this current war;who is "indigenous" to the land; the first wave of Jewish immigration to Palestine from Russia in the 1880s and how those settlements were established;the term "colonialism" and whether or not Zionism should be considered a colonialist movement; andthe establishment of the Israeli State in 1948 and the fact that to the Palestinians, this is called the Nakba. For those who'd like to read more about the history of both nations, we recommend reading Israel/Palestine by Alan Dowty. Is Zionism a form of settler colonialism?https://www.historytoday.com/archive/feature/herzls-troubled-dream-origins-zionismhttps://www.opendemocracy.net/en/north-africa-west-asia/theodor-herzl-and-trajectory-of-zionism/Please send any questions, feedback, or comments to us at: fromtheyarra@gmail.comSpecial thanks to our sound engineer Benjamin Levitt for all your work bringing this together.

What truly sustains us when it comes to food? Taking into account bioindividuality, health, age, sex, geographical location, climate, regeneration and taste preferences, it's not a black-and-white conversation at all, much as many try to make it and in this conversation, we explore it. We talk: What drives an everyday desire to cook wellHow even the best chefs get frustrated with the constraints of sustainability/limited resources (phew!)How not to be overwhelmed by new skill building in the kitchenHow to find what inspires youHow to make peace with the “grey area” and not always being able to make the best choices for the planet/youOne of Australia's most inventive chefs, Jo Barrett, joins me to unpack her journey as a person and chef into connecting on a deeper level with food and our food system, cooking from “place”, from emotions and connection, as well as working to pioneer what's possible with curiosity and creativity. Jo made her name at the acclaimed Oakridge Winery in the Yarra Valley, before joining the groundbreaking eco-living experiment Future Food System in 2021, which involved a year of living and working with fellow chef Matt Stone, in a tiny urban, zero-waste farm situated on the banks of the Yarra River in Melbourne's Federation Square, a project that famed regenerative superhero, Joost Baker, spearheaded as the ultimate anti-dote example to the destructive modern food system. It was a no-waste house complete with aquaponics, solar power, micro-farms, a charcoal tank and a rooftop garden, home to Matt and Jo, who spent their days harvesting, cooking and eating the food this 100% sustainable modern urban farm produces – while all waste produced by the house was fed back into the house's systems: a closed-loop.Jo recently opened the restaurant Little Picket in the seaside town of Lorne. For the first time in three years, the so-called home of football - the Melbourne Cricket Ground – will host a game on the last weekend in September. The Sydney Swans will take on Geelong to decide to 2022 Premiership, a match will see 1000-goal forward Lance Franklin - made in Western Australian by the way – take on the experience of Geelong. Both teams will take part in the Grand Final parade this morning – which will somewhat bizarrely float down the Yarra River. Which I am guessing might make the traditional carside player interviews a bit harder – but if anyone will overcome those technical difficulties, it is Seven News footy guru Ryan Daniels.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
