Simplicity is the outcome of technical subtlety. It is the goal, not the starting point. Maurice Saatchi It's worth repeating that HVAC equipment is often the largest energy-consuming system in a home. While listeners have likely run duct leakage and blower airflow tests, how did we arrive at the straightforward, almost simple test equipment and methods used today? What is the science behind the tests? Today's podcast continues down the technical trail with part two of a three-part series on cracking open the details of the ANSI/RESNET/ACCA/ICC Standard 310. We are joined by Steve Rogers, President of The Energy Conservatory and an expert in pressure and flow measurements. Steve introduces us to the technology used to measure duct leakage and blower (air handler) airflow and the power of proper diagnostic methods and techniques. Some of the educational resources mentioned may be found here: www.HVACairflow.com, which includes materials prepared by Ed Janowiak, Manager of HVAC Design Education for ACCA. After listening, you will better understand the “why and how” of getting the duct leakage and blower airflow dialed in. RESTalk: To the RESNET community, we hear you and want to engage. Listen to the lecture by editor Mykaela Saunders speaking on the critically acclaimed anthology 'THIS ALL COME BACK NOW'. 'THIS ALL COME BACK NOW' is the world's first anthology of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander speculative fiction – written, curated, edited and designed by blackfellas, for blackfellas and about blackfellas. In these stories, ‘this all come back': all those things that have been taken from us, that we collectively mourn the loss of, or attempt to recover and revive, as well as those that we thought we'd gotten rid of, that are always returning to haunt and hound us. This critically acclaimed anthology was a collective undertaking, and editor Mykaela Saunders discusses how she worked with others at each different stage of the project. From the first conception of the anthology through to publication and beyond, Mykaela has ensured that the project has been built from good relationality – the very stuff that all healthy communities are made of. Mykaela Saunders is an award-winning Koori and Lebanese writer, teacher and community researcher, and the editor of the critically acclaimed 'THIS ALL COME BACK NOW', the world's first anthology of blackfella speculative fiction (UQP). This lecture was recorded at ACCA on Thursday 4 August 2022, 6–8pm. Ed Janowiak joins the podcast to introduce us to ACCA Manual T. Compared to other manuals, Manual T is one of the least-considered ACCA manuals. However, it's the manual that advises us on how not to blow high-velocity air on people and has maintained the same standards since the mid-1900s. Unlike Manuals J, S, and D, Manual T is not recognized in code compliance. Manual T deals with air distribution; it helps us find out the throw and spread, which informs our ductwork design in Manual D. We need to know the customer's expectations and the air velocity we'll need to manage at the registers before designing the ductwork. Register placement is also a critical element of Manual T. Throw and spreqd can vary wildly, and register selection and placement are going to have a significant effect on comfort as a result. Register placement on the ceiling may achieve the Coanda effect to assist with air distribution, and that can be especially useful in low-load or passive homes. Low-load homes are an interesting case, as they use less hardware than other homes, meaning that we need to make the most of calculations and equipment selection. Manual T ultimately focuses on using the diffusers and registers, rather than the equipment, to spread air throughout a space. Knowledge of the principles in Manual T also allows us to communicate, establish, and manage expectations with the customer. Ed and Bryan also discuss: Registers, diffusers, grilles, and vents Filter restrictions ACCA Manual LLH Air movement in the occupied vs. unoccupied zone Manual T as an extension of Manual D What it means to lend credibility in this industry Floor vs. ceiling registers based on climate If you have an iPhone, subscribe to the podcast HERE, and if you have an Android phone, subscribe HERE. “The details are not the details. They make the design.” Charles Eames HVAC equipment is often the largest energy consuming system in a home. While listeners are likely grounded in the aspect of “house as a system,” where does the rubber meet the road when it comes to HVAC system design? In today's podcast, we begin part one of a three-part series on cracking open the details of the ANSI/RESNET/ACCA/ICC Standard 310. We are joined by Alex Meaney of Mean HVAC Consulting and Design, an expert in HVAC system design. Listen in as Alex brings, in his words, “well above average” insights into the important topic of load calculation. Alex details the various ACCA Manuals (J, S, D, LLH, T, Z-R) involved in the process of HVAC Design, as well as factors about the origins of many of the calculations. There were several “ah-ha” moments as we got deep into the aspects of answering a seemingly simple question: “what is the heat and moisture loss or gain per hour, of a home under design conditions. After listening, you will better understand the power and importance of an accurate load calculation. RESTalk: To the RESNET community, we hear you and want to engage. In this podcast, we get a glimpse into the amazing journey that Pieter took, from humble beginnings in South Africa to incredible successes in the corporate world. Watch the video version of the podcast to see a walkthrough of the WingStudio platform as well. Getting degrees in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying and Law, allowed Pieter to get started in the corporate world, but he was not happy working an 8 to 5 job. After realizing that this does not need to be the case, he decided to help impact other people's lives, by helping them realize their strengths which lay dormant. Looking at the extremely concerning unemployment statistics for South African youth, which is sitting at 65%, he decided to start WingStudio with 3 co-founders to help the youth of today find employment. Having traveled widely, he recounts his experiences in Vietnam, where he met people in the outskirts of the nation, and felt the need to help them find and reach their potential. This was one of the formative experiences that was behind the development of WingStudio. Attending the event called Suits and Sneakers, gave Pieter the idea for a platform for teaching people how to manage their formal and informal lives better. The need for a platform for the youth to showcase their talents, where the youth can consistently post about their activities, and show their transferable skills to employers is what drove the development of WingStudio website. The basic idea is that even day to day activities, something as simple as baking a cake, has transferable skills attached that perhaps an accountant might need, namely, attention to detail. Putting the proof into these skills from even mundane tasks is what the movement is all about. Pieter says that the team is also working towards incorporating Blockchain to validate posts from users.
