My guest in this week's Book Club podcast is the publisher Anthony Cheetham, one of the biggest figures in British publishing through the second half of the twentieth century and into this one. In his new book A Life in Fifty Books: A Publisher's Memoir, he looks back on his career. He tells me why he had a soft spot for Robert Maxwell; how he launched Ken Follett's career on the top deck of a bus; how losing a press-up competition changed the landscape of publishing (and upset his then wife); how publishing has changed – and how it hasn't; and why Confessions of a Window-Cleaner has a special place in his heart.

Martin Cheetham is the station director of the EDF-run Heysham 2 nuclear power plant on the Lancashire coast in northwest England. It has two advanced gas-cooled reactors which were first connected to the grid in 1988. They have a combined power of 1.24 GW and had an initial design life to 2023 before being extended to 2028.The second unit at Heysham 2 power plant set a record with 940 days of continuous operation from 2014 to 2016 and the plant is now closing in on setting a new record for electricity generated by a nuclear power plant in the UK. As it does so, there are currently checks going on which could see a further extension to its life. In this episode Cheetham talks about the similarities and differences between nuclear and his earlier work at thermal energy plants, he explains what decisions on Heysham's lifetime extension rest on, and why such decisions are different for the UK's fleet of AGRs compared with pressurised water reactors. He also highlights the potential for the Heysham site to become home to a new generation of nuclear power, in the form of small modular reactors.

Dr. Tom Cheetham is a naturalist, poet, and author who has spent the last few decades of his life engrossed in the work of Henry Corbin, who inspired a century of studies of the unconscious mind. Corbin's aim was to understand the line that cut across the mystic traditions of the world, in the hopes of finding something that was the universal ground of being. To that end, he searched for answers in the work of everyone from Continental philosophers, to the medieval gnostics, to the Persian mystics and honed in on something he called the “imaginal realm,” inhabited by angels who guide their human charges towards a life of meaning and profundity. Despite reams of research debunking the myth and countless examples of pioneering Christian researchers, many people still believe intuitively that somehow science and religion are in constant conflict. There are even those within the church who, perhaps subconsciously, buy into a narrative that what happens in labs around the world has no relevance for believers. This week we interview Richard Cheetham, a recently retired Church of England bishop, about his lifelong love of science, how it intersected with his own faith, and his passion to inspire more Christian leaders to engage with science in all its truth-seeking, God-curious, theologically challenging glory. • Subscribe to the Matters of Life and Death podcast: https://pod.link/1509923173 • If you want to go deeper into some of the topics we discuss, visit John's website: http://www.johnwyatt.com • For more resources to help you explore faith and the big questions, visit: http://www.premierunbelievable.com

First coverage of the lawsuit: https://youtu.be/I6laSC_E3ZYMultiple sources close to North Valley Baptist Church in Santa Clara, California, stated that after the evening service on Wednesday, March 13, the livestream was shut off. After the livestream ended, Pastor Jack Trieber and his staff informed the church body in the auditorium that they had settled a lawsuit. The lawsuit in question was one I reported on recently -– which was filed on October 19, 2022, by two women, Christina Cheetham and Kim Craig, against North Valley Baptist Church and former youth pastor Mike Strouf, alleging abuse that took place near the end of the 1980s.Fred Slye, the business manager for the church, read a statement from the pulpit, saying that police were called 34 years ago, and it was dealt with, and that they needed to settle the lawsuit.Trieber and staff also allegedly communicated to the church that they could have bankrupted the church or put it in significant financial debt and had to sell one property if they did not settle. And, of course, the congregation was encouraged not to listen to “rumors.”I've been following this case closely since almost the time when the Preacher Boys podcast started. In fact, on December 9, 2020, I conducted a podcast interview with Christina Cheetham. The interview was just under two hours in length, with Christina detailing her grooming and abuse at the hands of Mike Strouf, former youth pastor of North Valley Baptist Church in Santa Clara, California. At our recording time, Christina was unsure of avenues to pursue legal action against Strouf due to stringent statute of limitations laws.We agreed to keep the episode from being released while Christina searched for ways to pursue justice. Christina discovered that in 2019, California Assembly Bill Number 218 had amended the law about civil suits for recovery of damages from alleged childhood sexual abuse. The Bill prescribed an amendment and expansion of the definition of “childhood sexual abuse,” extension of the statute of limitations for commencement of civil suits for same, allowance of recovery of up to treble damages under certain circumstances involving a cover-up of childhood sexual assault, revival of specific childhood sexual assault claims, and exemption from the Government Tort Claims Act's “claims-presentation” requirements for childhood sexual assault claims. This gave Christina an unprecedented opportunity to take legal action.Until today, Christina has made no public statement regarding her story of abuse.I will indeed be sitting down with her again in the future to record an entirely new conversation. However, in the meantime, with her permission, I returned to our 2020 interview to pull key clips from her story to add her voice to the stories being shared regarding the lawsuit.✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:preacherboyspodcast.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@PreacherBoyshttps://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/https://twitter.com/preacherboysdochttps://www.instagram.com/preacherboysdoc/https://www.tiktok.com/@preacherboyspodTo connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/preacher-boys-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Back in the 70s getting mortgages took months – there was a mortgage queue (&before techies get over-excited about how “bad” this was it was one of the factors restraining insane bull markets in residential property). Fast forward and the median mortgage in the UK is granted in 19 business days which is still a long time to wait given the stresses associated with the UK legal structure of buying a house. MPowered Mortgages, a regulated mortgage lender in the UK, have reduced this to a median of 3 days to make a decision and are aiming in the next 18mts to make half of those done in a few hours. Stuart is the CEO of MPowered (and its sister company MQube seller of AI products into regulated industries more globally) and guides us through this astonishing outperformance. Like many a hardcore Fintech founder he has a long history in FS behind him having been CEO of several banks in Asia for Lloyds Bank for many years. Even so this is no mean achievement as Stuart himself found out recently when he needed a mortgage but – under the “rules” – was not allowed to use his own company to borrow from. Topics discussed include: Stuarts recent experience of buying a house and getting a mortgage running banks in Asia and being a nomad the UK Housing market managing banks in a crash period “inventing the motor car and a regulator telling you you must use a horse for travel as you have a vested interest in motor cars”

Summary: Robert Cheetham, Chief Strategy Officer at Element 84, discusses the development of a geospatial technology radar inspired by ThoughtWorks' technology radar. Element 84, a women-owned small business, focuses on geospatial data processing tools, software engineering, and open source contributions. The geospatial radar, unlike ThoughtWorks, combines platform and tools, drops languages, and adds data and standards as categories. They introduce a "watch" category instead of "hold" to track emerging technologies affecting the geospatial field. The radar aims to offer opinions based on experience, emphasizing open source, open data, standards, and the public good. Highlights:

The British born musician, composer and writer Stephen Hough grew up in Cheshire, won the piano section of the very first BBC Young Musician of the Year competition as a teenager, before moving to New York to study at the Juilliard School of Music. Over the last 30 years, Stephen Hough has made more than 60 albums and is globally renowned for his thrilling live performances of a wide classical piano repertoire. Knighted in 2022 for services to music, he is also a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music, holds the International Chair of Piano Studies at his alma mater, the Royal Northern College in Manchester, and is a member of the faculty at The Juilliard School. Stephen talks to John Wilson about some of the most important influences on his musical career, starting with a 1962 LP called Keyboard Giants of the Past. This compilation album, bought for him just after he started to learn the piano aged 6, included artists from the earliest days of recording such as Ignace Paderewski, Vladimir de Pachmann and Sergei Rachmaninoff, all of whom inspired him with their rich artistry and individual styles. He reveals how Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius helped him back into the world of classical music after suffering a breakdown while at Cheetham's School of Music, and began his conversion to Catholicism as a teenager. Stephen also describes how leaving Cheshire for studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York was his coming-of-age in many ways and how winning the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition while a student there, launched his career aged 21. One of the core tools that most marketers use to measure their ROI, Google Analytics, is undergoing its first major revision in more than a decade. From beginners to experts, learn what these changes mean to you and how you can best prepare for them in this interview with Google Analytics expert Chris Cheetham-West.Key Highlights[06:28] Introduction of Podcast Guest, Chris Cheetham-West[08:28] Chris's Marketing Journey[11:02] How to Utilize Google Analytics[15:58] Google Analytics 3 vs Universal Analytics[18:47] New Definition of Engaged Rate and Engaged Viewer[22:09] Google Analytics Integration for E-commerce[25:04] Chris's Advice on How to Save Time Inside Google Analytics[27:57] Making Better Decisions with Data[30:39] Final Advice[32:10] Connect with ChrisNotable QuotesGoogle probably realized that, hey, people are using goals are not using it effectively enough. But everybody that has a website most likely have a goal. So now that's going to be more of a central part of Google to explore versus just like a small piece, it was in Universal Analytics. And it's one of those things where, after a few months, we're gonna realize that this is a better tool to use. And I'm getting to know my customer a little bit more. The message I want to say is like, there's always a faster way to get to the data that you're trying to find.Be intentional about looking at what's going on and making those changes. So make those decisions on a monthly basis, maybe even a weekly basis to optimize. So don't forget to optimize, not just look at the data, but optimize and see how you can get better. So those are all things that you want to consistently do weekly or monthly basis to make sure you're really getting the most out of the data? Because it gives you so much information. All you got to do is look at it and then take action.Right now is the time to play around with GA 4 so right now is like, look into events, if you're not able to use the advanced, you've ever used goals before looking to it, but the old analytics get used to these things that are going to change. In that case, just make sure you are playing around with it, spend an hour a week on it hour a day even just to get ready, and just to understand it, so that way, you can be ready for the change.Guest Links:Chris' Website: https://chrisnwest.com/Connect with Chris on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/speakerchrisnwest/ Learn More: Join My Digital First Mastermind: https://nealschaffer.com/membership/ Learn about My Fractional CMO Consulting Services: https://nealschaffer.com/cmo Download My Free Ebooks Here: https://nealschaffer.com/freebies/ Subscribe to my YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/nealschaffer All My Podcast Show Notes: https://podcast.nealschaffer.com
