Early-stage companies might require a salesperson who is versatile and capable of wearing multiple hats, from creating sales emails to collaborating with marketing. Hiring someone not ready for the role can lead to misaligned strategies, wasted resources, and missed opportunities, ultimately hindering your company's growth. Karen Gordon is a distinguished go-to-market leader with a career dedicated to building and scaling early and growth-stage startups. Most recently, she served as the Executive Vice President and a founding team member at GoodShuffle Pro, a SaaS platform for event companies. Currently, Karen is a consultant and advisor to businesses looking to scale, leveraging her extensive experience in revenue generation, marketing, and product management. Her expertise is sought after by companies aiming to achieve significant growth and operational excellence. In this episode's discussions around the Community Table: Who should a solo attorney hire first? You're building your firm. Who's the next person you add to add (and you want avoid the wrong hire)? For starters, what do you need? Where are you wasting time? From there, “hiring is marketing,” it's crucial you attract the largest pool of great candidates. How do you prepare a job candidate for your hiring process? Start by being transparent. It's that easy. “Hey, here's our process, it may be different from what you've done before.” The important thing is to find what's not only right for you, but what's right for the new hire. And if they start by questioning your process, move on. How do you introduce your “second in command” to your team? Maybe that's the wrong question. “Second” in command suggests you still want people to report to you. You don't. The whole idea is to offload daily decisions so you can focus on strategy and bigger things. There's no “second in command,” there's the “here's the new person in charge for all of you.” Your language can sabotage your intentions. Guest: Martin Roesch, CEO at Netography, creator of Snort Topics: What is the role of network security in the public cloud? Networks used to be the perimeter, now we have an API and identity driven perimeter. Are networks still relevant as a layer of defense? We often joke that “you don't need to get your firewalls with you to the cloud”, is this really true? How do you do network access control if not with firewalls? What about the NIDS? Does NIDS have a place in the cloud? So we agree that some network security things drop off in the cloud, but are there new network security threats and challenges? There's cloud architecture and then there's multi cloud and hybrid architectures–how does this story change if we open the aperture to network security for multi cloud and hybrid? Should solutions that provide cloud network security be in the cloud themselves? Is this an obvious question? The New Wave Podcast: Daily Conversations On Web3.0, Business, Psychology, Psychedelics & More. A Show For People Seeking Spiritual, Psychological And Financial Sovereignty. Hosted By Best-Selling Author, Speaker and Entrepreneur Daniel DiPiazza. One thing I hope is clear from all my content recently is that I'm taking a strong stance in favour of INTIMACY over VOLUME. In the age of social media, we've been brainwashed to believe that more numbers, views, follows, fans and likes equate to more "success." This is wrong, both from a philosophical and practical perspective. Everybody is shouting at the top of their lungs trying to be heard. "Influencers," entrepreneurs and personal brands are making more content than ever, hoping to be seen. And the platforms that host this material (Facebook, IG, YouTube, etc) are happy to let us create all day because they monetize our time in exchange for hundreds of billions in ad revenue collectively. I'm not saying that you have to get off social media. I'm saying you need to recognize the game for what it is. And if you are a content creator or business owner, start taking control of your customer data. The fact that large platforms own all the data for the people you want to connect with is the reason why you'll always get the smallest piece of the pie. How are you going to own the data? Use the public social media platforms to build private customer and communicate with them on platforms that cannot be watered down by algorithms and newsfeeds. Text message and phone Email (to an extent) Direct mail In person This is my approach for 2020 and beyond. And to practice what I preach, I'm going to cities around the US to drop #Zadvice live. At this meet up in LA, we spent 3 hrs (should have been longer!) going deep on business and life. We built real friendships and made more progress in a few hours than could be made in months of binging videos online. The relationships are what count! Increase the efficiency of your marketing efforts without needing a massive budget, a giant team, or a household brand. Cameron Heffernan is a marketing industry expert and is flipping the script on marketing thought. This episode features some great discussion around what your content should provide your audience with. You'll hear about fostering curiosity amongst your team, how to understand your audience, and learn the three basic components of marketing. Busted Myths: You don't need an enormous budget, a huge team, or a well-known brand to do marketing correctly. If you are confident in your product-market fit and what you are offering to the market, you shouldn't be afraid to show your competitors that information. Takeaways Most of marketing relies on knowledge that is easy to learn on your own if you are curious and willing to put in the time. Marketers need to develop that curiosity within their teams. Your marketing efforts need to be creative, engaging, and genuine. It doesn't cost more to infuse these three things in your marketing but it does make it much more effective. Your content should be something that consumers actually want. You need to provide them with value multiple times before asking for something from them in return. Give people value without expecting anything in return. You need to have a deep understanding of your audience in order to provide them with content that actually has value to them. Understand the full scope of your B2B customers' businesses and also what their customers are looking for. Using surveys can be an effective way to learn about your customers and it doesn't have to be an overly complicated process. Even three questions on social media can provide you with valuable insights into your customers. Marketers need to look for opportunities that have hidden value, even if they clash with convention. Using different tactics will help marketers become more efficient. There are three simple components to marketing which can be simplified down to getting the right message to the right people at the right time. Hold off on sending the message until you have metrics in place to measure its success. He recommends the book Who: The A Method of Hiring by Geoff Smart and Randy Street because it has a well-researched hiring system. When you make a bad hire, it costs you at least that position's salary. And that figure can go up to 5-15x based on time and money. Start with a good job description. Have a crystal clear vision about the work to be done and how performance will be measured. Use a scorecard and include the mission of the job, six to seven detailed breakdowns of what the position will do, and when the actions should be completed. Break down interviews into three to filter top candidates for the position. The first is the screening interview. Ask applicants about career goals, skills, strengths, weaknesses, and who their last five bosses were. Next is the main interview, where references (the last five bosses) are called to probe deeper into the applicant's experience and performance. The last is the focused interview which highlights the specific skills and traits demanded by the job. Always be in a recruiting mode because you never know when rockstar employees are looking. A-players are pulled to other jobs; B and C players are pushed out the door. If you want an above-average business, you need to hire significantly above-average people. 3 KEY POINTS Business success lies in the employment process because it's the first step to building a team. Interviewing is critical in the hiring process so it must be done thoughtfully and intentionally. Hire new employees based on core values. Accept applications even when there are no positions open – sell the opportunity to work for your business. TWEETABLE QUOTES “Don't wait to hire until you're feeling overwhelmed. We know you couldn't get enough of last week's episode, so come along as we keep calm and carry on with our conversation on commerce, or, to be more clear in category, hiring a developing your current or desired business team. We know from last week's full court press from Dr. J that in our current climate, each and every enterprise is having to engage with less than ideal conditions when it comes to finding new hires and attempting to develop and train the good folks you already have. With the fog of uncertainty we all seem to find ourselves in these days, we're even seeing more and more people jump ship from their current jobs to new ventures and industries, so are you ready if one of your team leaves you or will there be a leadership vacuum in that loss? (You don't want to end up like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes did after Teddy Pendergrass split from the group in '76 after a money dispute; it's a hard fall from gold records to slumming it on a 2017 Soul Train Cruise and having to do a wine tasting on the Lido Deck with Peabo Bryson getting top billing) Not to worry - our boys Sid and Keith are here to save the day and they've got another dynamic duo's decisive dissertation to direct you: Geoff Smart and Randy Street's "Who: A Method for Hiring." (Found where all books are sold and maybe your local library as well. Local libraries - they're not just places for the homeless to sleep or take sink baths; they also have books) Step One: Prime Your Pipeline. Examine the existing environment in your business by literally taking score: create a scorecard for your company's positions and have your employees, to paraphrase New Orleans rapper Mystikal, "Show me what you workin' with." By actually taking score, you really see who is doing what, who should be doing what and what might not be getting done at all. It's a good day when we get to use "Who" to help answer "What," isn't it? Step Two: Start the Search. Finding the fit that meets your needs is not going to be fast or easy, especially in this economy. Long story short: whatever you've done in the past probably isn't going to work or apply to current conditions; you've got to up your game and meet the market where it's at now. You're going to have to be out there and every day, you'll be hustlin' (like Rick Ross or Van McCoy and the Soul City Symphony - your choice) and doing everything you can to find the best right people: marketing the opening, reaching out for referrals, and communicating the culture for your organization to complete your crew. Step Three: Improving the Interview. This one's actually incredibly simple: be intentional in your interviewing. Our boys have some primo practical pointers here and putting down anything more in these notes would violate our status as card-carrying members of Team #NoSpoilers. Step Four: Settle the Score. Yes, our simple scorecards from Step One are back again (like a horror movie villain or Jujubee on seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race ... four times is enough, queen). Using the scorecard helps eliminate the emotionality from the process, which you'll need to find the most excellent employee for the job. Of course, if you want the first-rate facts and most incomparable intelligence from this week's show, you're going to have to actually listen to the podcast - because, if you haven't learned by now, these show notes are, at best, loosely constructed outlines that occasionally tell you what the episode is actually about amongst a hodge-podge of alliteration, outdated pop cultural references and a surprising amount of facts about the life and career of Teddy Pendergrass - RIP to a real one.
