Moving far outside of your musical comfort zone is a seductive move in theory but one which regrettably few producers feel able to execute in practice. Drew Lustman, aka FaltyDL, is fearless in his approach to breaking down his own stylistic parameters. His new album, A Nurse To My Patience, is the most striking example to date of that feature of his work. This is an artistic trait which I much admire, and I was looking forward to the opportunity to sit down and discuss it at length without someone who I count as a friend, but one with whom I haven't spent anywhere near as much time one-on-one as I'd like.So we discuss the above, and much else including his encounters with Kanye West, his collaborations with Mykki Blanco, releasing on Planet Mu and Ninja Tune, and much else besides. The record includes 4 unidentified Irish producers on a Garage/Bass/UK Funky/Tech House tip for first volume. All City have put out some of Ireland's finest records of the last few decades including artists such as Krystal Klear, Art Crime, Dâm-Funk, FaltyDL, New Jackson, John Daly, Folamour and more. The label also oversee's and has helped grow sub-labels and other Irish labels such as Pear, First Second Label, Gurriers as well as a host of other imprints. The Dublin based record label now launches a more tongue and cheek label championing Irish producers but in a more incognito fashion. London's Loraine James is as experimental as electronic artists get. She doesn't just make hard to categorise music, she makes music for which there are often no words. Depending on your mood, her sounds can suit either full-on dance floor workouts or reflective home listens. That has been the case across two standout albums on Hyperdub, both of which explore vulnerability and identity across tracks that fizz with ideas and energy. The most recent, Reflection back in June, came with snippets of interior monologue. They lay bare James's most intimate feelings while the beats around her continue to act as something of a safety blanket. This week's rule-breaking mix features a number of Loraine's tunes including the unnamed and exclusive opener, plus a flurry of beats from peers like FaltyDL, object blue, Squarepusher and Djrum. They make for a full body workout that twitches your every synapse one minute then sink you into a deeply seductive club sound the next. The transitions from hyper-polished and futuristic rhythms to live jazz drums, or icy dub to glitchy IDM, would seem impossible on paper, but in practice, they are executed perfectly.

Back in October, Brooklyn's FaltyDL, aka Drew Lustman, put out his sixth album, Heaven is for Quitters, on his very own Blueberry Records. The release coincided with that of Jubilee's debut album, After Hours, and on episode one of the Pre-Game, the two artists sit down to chat about album names, the differences between DJing and producing, and out-of-the-box release strategies (hint: Drew once debuted a trailer for an album on Pornhub).
